Fun fact, modern science may make maser weapons relevant again in Godzilla movies, allow me to educate you all: Simply put, maser weapons always looked less like a purebred microwave laser, and more like an electrolaser, the microwave laser ionizes the air creating a path which an electric current can be fired down. This is real experimental technology being tested for long range taser weapons, but magnify the concept by several hundred times and the end result would look a lot like a maser tank firing. On another note, my favorite maser tank is still the upgraded type 90 "hypermaser" from tokyo sos, they actually looked somewhat realistic in appearance, and they had the best beam effect. A pity they only made Godzilla angrier.

Considering energy weapons are now actively being fielded for defensive and offensive combat the people Toho were onto something.

Great video. I think the view the Maser tank will never return is ultimately somewhat jaded. There will be a time and place for them again in the future, when they feel fresh and unused. I'm sure of it. But that aside, hearing the history of this famous kaiju and scifi weapon was wonderful. You knocked it out of the park.
@Kaiju17

I agree, it may be biased nostalgia but to me the maser will never truly go out of style or not be cool, the Heisei era showed that just need to update the style but keep the core look. And no matter the era, the maser will always return (fingers crossed for a return in a new Reiwa era series post -1)

While I personally prefer mecha and robots over tanks, jets, and space ships, I always appreciate it when regular human forces are given some sort of fighting chance in the battle against monsters and aliens even if that chance turns out to be very small.

Very well presented. Also interesting stuff to see as someone who started out in this industry (SFX, VFX) in the early 80s as a model builder and matte painter. It seems the Japanese model makers working on these movies never managed to make their vehicle models non-wobbly, but maybe that was a budgetary issue. We used to build all our vehicles (or any moving models) on very rigid and heavy steel frames to counter the dreaded wobble that is so prominent even when filmed at 60-90 frames per second.

In the star wars clone wars series there is an episode called the Zillobeast and in part one, the beast is attacked by vehicles operated by storm troopers that strangely resemble maser tanks, also in star wars the bad batch a star ship is deployed that has a ray gun equipped to it that looks too much like the type 66 maser tank dish that is used on a new zillobeast.

Again, I was hoping we would have mazer tanks when I was a kid. Not knwing that with it, we probably have real kaiju to go with them. Or worse, the government deciding that civil rights protesters were the "new enemy" and got busy "mazering" citizens.

This review had me hyped up for MOGERA more than its actual appearance in "Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla". The maser was always an afterthought in my mind as a kid watching these movies, and I appreciate being shown the real-world creative genius that went behind their conception and creation. Great video as always.

27:10 was it? I dont think so. Gotengo sported not only quiet the aray of maser weapons, NO, it took down at least 2 monsters that we know of with them AND waged the battle that the maser weapons where designed to do in the first place : ANTI AIR. Final War was the best sendoff for that weapon they could have. Shin Gojira obviously only showed the weakness in bureaucracy AND the new Type 10 tanks to their fullest and Minus one was OBVIOUSLY to early to feature extended weaponry. Dont worry, it will get a sequel so we can hope they make a time skip to the 70's or 80's with it where a maser tank could actualy fit in. They now basicaly at the end of the movie (SPOILER!!!) did create Gforce after basicaly STEALING 4 Destroyer that where ment for allied nation's (3 of them) and one was to be send to human scum (also called russia). Only 2 survived shure (Yuukikaze and Hibiki) but their basicaly now the main assets of the Gforce. There is just no way they didnt get that this thing was regenerating at the end even after "dieing" for good. Also they need to add the Super X3 theme next time for what might become the first ever ON SCREEN MOVIE adaption of Ace Combats Shinden II design. They now have a perfect oportunity to go that way especiel after HYPING the Shinden, aka the J7W1 at the end. And i was both smiling and crying that the BEST they ever created made its FIRST on screen apearence AND they have one build again now to display (weeeeeeeel... there where 2 DD's that they shoot deckshots and all with and they where completly IJN and had their distinctive look for them close ups, same as for Takao sooooo...... they already build 30% of Yamato for a movie, building 2 DD's and parts of Takao would be a piece of cake for them XD) So basicaly : Goji minus one sequel HYPE! As if they dont add more army scenes and maybe maser canons again (after Re:Zero already did use them XD(Right big whale fight as climactic finish of season 1?XD). Also their a standart part of EDF's main weapon arsenal so their not lost, their just in other capable hands now XD

"Outlandish depictions of the future..." Hey, now, don't go dissing my childhood. One of the books I learned to read on was Tom Swift and His Megascope Space Prober. I assure you, none of this stuff is that far out when you were raised on a steady diet of ultrasonic cycloplanes, polar-ray dynosospheres and repelatron skyways. The future is vastly disappointing. Still not a triphibian atomicar in sight. 8:20 You'd have known all of that if you'd read Tom Swift Jr. as a kid. Just saying. :)
