Oh no...I used silicones in my natural hair | 4C Natural Hair 

Hey guys! My awesome Patron, Alexis commented this AWESOME comment on Patreon (like a week ago because of early access on my Patreon) it SUPER informative so figured I’d share it here (with permission, of course): First, there's nothing wrong with using silicone if they work for your hair. Having said that we need to talk about why many naturals avoid it (I avoid it unless I ran out of my normal stuff lol). Dimethicone (PDMS) is a hydrophobic substance. Meaning it prefers itself and things that don't have a polarity like oils, but hates polar things like water. Your hair has hydrophobic parts. Dimethicone will coat the hair, trapping the moisture inside your hair follicles. Which sounds great. Of course that shine and softness is coming from the silicone, so if someone doesn't normally take care of their hair like you do, their hair could be damaged or unhealthy and you would not be able to tell. You do take care of your hair and haven't damaged it to our knowledge, so you get more benefit from the slip when detangling. And probably shorter wash days. The bad side is that it also prefers ITSELF so if you don't use a clarifying shampoo at least every couple wash days the dimethicone can attach to itself and accumulate, weighing down your hair. So make sure to clarify at some point in the next month lol OK so having said that, gotta talk about a slightly better cousin, amodimethicone. You can find this one in products like Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls, which I still occasionally indulge in if I feel like having poof curls. This silicone has some polarity that is activated under lower pH like when you're conditioning in the shower. Damaged hair has a negative polarity so the positive side of amodimethicone will attach only to damaged hair (it is water soluble) and under the pH of normal hair products it will not be able to attach to itself, reducing the accumulation. You will notice if you compare with dimethicone that it might not have as much slip but will still be soft. You also theoretically don't need to clarify as often because accumulation is minimal.

for me the difference is the overall quality of the conditioner that happens to have silicones. If the quality isn't great the silicones just feels like a weird plastic coating. Good quality product with silicones feels soft and smooth and not coated at all.

Yeah, my hair likes silicones and I since I wash my hair once a week it doesn’t bother me one bit. Honestly I’ve never been one to follow the natural hair community with its rules(mainly cause I hate following rules) I did try things the natural hair community way and I found my hair did not respond well so I just did trial and error and found things that worked for me. I discovered that a lot of the products my hair likes have silicone in them. Who am I to disprove my hair of what helps it thrives. Love my oils and butters and now silicone.

as a natural who does everything “wrong” w their natural hair.. i love silicones lol. i love $1 shampoo, grease, and my fav conditioner.. the pantene gold one lol (im sure it’s fully of the cones). if it works, it works! gotta just leave your hair alone is the key for me.

People tend to forget that the job of every conditioner is to coat the hair, the job of the coating is to protect the hair from further damage and make it look shinier and feel softer. Also, silicones are not the only substance that can build up on your hair, natural oils are just as likely to cause build up. There are different types of silicones, ones that are water soluble and even ones that are designed for finer hair. I'm a wavy girl and I definitely prefer to use silicones, at least in a serum form throughout my ends, they help me in the humid climate that I live in and prevent tangling which in itself prevents damage. The ends of my hair are the weakest part and I like to protect them the most. My hair never breaks off despite me using heat regularly and even my stylist complemented me on how healthy it is.

I learned a while ago to just use what my hair likes, regardless of what the natural hair community said. I use grease on my scalp too! Yep, I said it! Whatever works!

If you don't use a sulfate shampoo, 'cones can build up in your hair.

I use Carols Daughter Goddess Strength Conditioner and it has cones. 😏 my dirty secret is that I actually left it overnight as a mask (bcuz I was lazy) and left it as my makeshift leave in conditioner-because I never washed it off. Curls were poppin...I know risky but, my hair is doing well. CONES ain't never hurt nobody! Also, your opera voice is on point!

As a 4c natural who has to wash her hair weekly (severe scalp issues) with clarifying shampoo so I don’t mind silicones depending on what I’m trying to do. I won’t use silicones if I’m doing a 2 week protective style but that’s not very often so I silicone it up. I use it as a last step normally soooo whatever, I got hair to spare.

Dem vocals thoooo 🤩 PSA: Some silicones break down. That means that some of them don’t stay as build up on your hair very long at all. If I remember correctly, dimethicone, for example, breaks down after the fifth use. I could be wrong but I recommend Afobe Atoyebi’s video on whether silicones are bad, she explains it super well. I recommend Curly Chemistry as well, she’s literally a scientist!

I've loved watching your hair grow so healthily. It's so beautiful!

After not using silcone for so long, whenever I try a product with them my hair just feels like a synthetic wig. It might be soft and shiny but it feels like plastic. So I dont use them

Silicones is how I grew my hair out the first couple of times without even a deep conditioner, i.e. Herbal Essence's Hello Hydration (BSL). They have altered the formulation over the years to people please when the anti-silicone saga came out but I very much prefer the original formulation. It also made curl definition with wash n go's possible for me after using one tub of Eco gel, lol. I might try the one you are using. Great review.

Oh damn, I didn't know that avoiding silicones was a thing! I'm glad I didn't get the memo. In between braids, I de-tangle my hair with silicone lube... most effective method I have ever found, and it washes out easy. 🤷‍♀️

I find silicones are really nice for a bit but over time my hair feels drier than without. So like, I dont think theyre the devil but also theyre fine in moderation - kinda like sulfates. But yeah it was like a year of silicones before I notice my hair turn shit

Amika’s products are so good! I used to buy The Kure shampoo and conditioner before they reformulated it and also their Nice Cream cowash that was discontinued (and was silicone free, but worked just as well as their other stuff). My hair always felt and looked great after using their products. I don’t use silicones at the moment but if I was, I would be using Amika 😆

For me, silicones just don’t work out. My scalp is too sensitive and my hair is too close to my scalp to try to avoid contamination. I gave my old products to my mom tho,and she liked them (and the smell).

Absolutely love! I went back to cones a few years back and have never been without them ever again. I have a million heads of hair in my house to do and nothing detangles better than a conditioner with cones. I swear by it! Oh, that and I went back to using hair grease (Blue Magic). No regrets.

Dimethicone isn’t kind to the environment, which is why it’s banned in some countries. This discussion doesn’t seems to come up in natural hair conversations much. When I was combing out my locs earlier this year I was using the cheap suave cherry blossom conditioner and loved using it afterwards. Until I decided to upgrade my hair care products and use carol’s daughter and Shea moisture and my hair has been flourishing. But now that I’ve dyed my hair, I’ve been told to stay away from silicones and parabens no joke. so I do

Creme of Nature Pure Honey Conditioner is my no fail detangler and it has silicone. I will give it up when it stops working for me. I rinse it out once my hair is detangled.

Anybody else love their hair care routine then just feel like it’s too expensive, research and try new products and find that while they’re not bad they’re just not as sensorially good as your favs or just me? Idk if someone has explained but the reason why they advice that you don't use silicones is because most are not water soluble, meaning you need harsh sulfates which can be drying overtime, so they basically recommend you use water soluble stuff so you use softer shampoos
