Thanks for responding! I know of duppies but in my experience, those are ghosts (or demons?) in general. But I suppose the Higue could be a kind of duppy as well!
In some countries old women are disrespected and vilified because people see them as Ol' Higue or Soucouyan. Growing up, we were told that a cross can stop the higue. I never heard of rice or salt. I hope people stop putting their beliefs in superstitions and instead use science to clear their confusions. An awesome analysis. I love the conclusion where you quoted Shakespeare with the part of playing our role on the world stage-LIFE. Blessed and joyful Christmas Mr. Webb.
Thanks for watching and commenting! I can imagine elder women being disrespected in that way. By the way, I never heard about a cross being able to stop the Higue. I guess the myth of the Higue might have crossed paths with that of the vampire. And yes, I hope that poems like these can highlight how backward it is to put superstition above science. Even though it is good to know about our folklore, it is also good to see it as just that. As for the conclusion, I really think that identity is one of the major themes of this poem. The Higue might have been trapped in her identity, and that makes us question whether we are trapped in ours.

MY dad was from Guyana so I was raised on Black pudding. His my mother my Grandmother would make Black pudding and sell it at the market in Guyana. I don't eat it now because I am a vegetarian.
I think line the line which says "....the murder inside your head...?" Can be taken literally. In the sense mother's may think to murder their child for various reasons so she acts as someone they can blame for and not their thoughts personifying
I didn't comment .I wanna say thank you! What would you say is her attitude ..is attitude the same as tone ? I think her attitude is argumentative and pitiful.
Hi! Yes, tone and attitude are pretty much the same here. The tone reflects the attitude, and so they are very much connected, and usually, the same words can be used to describe them. The tone changes quite often in this poem. Frist we see her being frustrated and helpless, then sarcastic and argumentative. Then she sounds prideful and self-important at the end. Watch my live stream on TONE and MOOD for more on this. It was a really good session.
