Nestled in Derbyshire, the Old Ash Mine dates back to at least 1653, showcasing surface and underground workings with hillocks, capped shafts, and stone-lined buddles.
Descending a 40-meter shaft, we explore the intricate network below, ensuring safety with a newly installed anchor point.
Lead mining in Derbyshire peaked in the 18th century, marked by innovations like the steam engine. However, by the late 19th century, the industry declined due to exhausted veins and falling prices, culminating in the 1939 closure of Millclose Mine.
Today, Derbyshire's mining legacy is celebrated through museums like the Peak District Lead Mining Museum and sites like Magpie Mine and the Heights of Abraham, preserving the region's rich history for future generations.
