2002 Chrysler Prowler Review on The Straight Pipes Would you take the Prowler over a Chevy SSR or Ford Thunderbird? The car was a Plymouth Prowler until Plymouth was no longer a company. Then it became the Chrysler Prowler for 2 years.
Hey Yuri! ... I've got a 2001 Prowler Mullholland Blue and I LOVE IT!! Bought it from an ex- Navy seal , garaged in Arizona and I had it delivered to me in Nevada.. I am now in California. I love your yellow Prowler ... it is cool and I saw your road trip! Please write me back or call me after you communicate with me. see me in roccovitalia instagram. or email me g3marock@gmail.com -Rocco
I wish they'd given the Prowler a V8, but I'm still so glad this car exists. Whether you like it or not, you have to admit that it's awesome that anything like this ever rolled out of a factory. You can thank Bob Lutz for both the Prowler and the Viper! (not to mention the MUSTANG back in the day!) He is THE MAN! They don't call him "Maximum Bob" for nothing!
@@TheStraightPipes You're at 500k now. I used to follow car related news back in 2010 or something. My passion for cars reignited (fancy words, I know) after watching your videos in 2019. Thank you, guys. You're the best.
why in the hell do/did people hate these so much? they are awesome concepts and look _f*ckin' awesome._ I wish there were more cars with open(?) wheel designs like this. so cool.
The 1997 Prowler was a lot of first. 1st American production car with a F1 type pushrod suspension, Koni inboard coilovers, aluminum control arms, rocker arms, steering knuckles rotors and frame. 1st to have Magnesium and Kavlar body parts. And the 1st production car with 20' wheels and a aggressive staggered wheel set up. Btw interior was design to look minimal like a hot rod
@@jordanjoestar8839 that’s just what they had that would fit, as this was meant to be an experiment in making a car entirely out of aluminum, and the v8s wouldn’t fit with the design (although that’s fine as Chrysler didn’t have any v8s more powerful than this 3.5 until 2003) and the transmission is just a FWD transmission but in the back, and I guess they couldn’t do a manual for some reason.
I have to say I love this review. I hope you get a Prowler Yuri. I first saw the Prowler when I was a teenager and it was the best thing ever. Wanted one ever since but they didn't allow it on the roads where I live (Finland) until around 2007 and even then it was a real hassle to get it approved. Luckily there's the EU which helped a lot and some of the idiotic local restrictions got lifted. So in 2014 I travelled to the Netherlands and bought a black Plymouth Prowler (2000). I've worked in the automotive industry (or a dealer chain to be more precise) for around 15 years and driven hundreds of cars (BMW M3/4/5/6/Z3/Z4, Mini Cooper S JCW (+ coupe on track), Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo, etc.) - nothing gives me kicks like this car. Can't wait to get it on the road every spring. And it's funny - like taking a puppy for a walk. Everyone wants to talk to you about it :D. It's not perfect. I know. It's not a sports car but rather a cruiser. And it's not a V8. But for me, if it was a V8, it would probably cost too much in taxes. The total cost including taxes for importing a Prowler to Finland is somewhere between 40-60 k$, and you can drive it from April to October, so you really have to want one. I did. A lot. And apparently about 6 other people have too since 7's the total amount of Prowlers in Finland. It's actually very comfortable to drive. Last spring I drove about 1300 miles straight from Finland to France and wasn't that tired or strained. That trip was around 2800 miles total. The car is highly reliable and I had no problems whatsoever. Best moments until now; 1. I was pulled over by the police in Netherlands on the first trip driving it back home. The reason they pulled me over was because they wanted to see what the car was and take a photo :D ! 2. I'd had the car for 3 weeks when a local guy with a Lambo went by (the opposite direction of course ;) ). I waved at him but he looked very grumpy - I guess I was stealing his spotlight :D. 3. Every trip I take I get 1-5 thumbs up from people I've never met. Love the car! And great content guys, keep up the good work!
Way too much shifting. Make a nice big V8 with a wide powerband instead of buzzing little engines and 10 gears. I could start my old 428 Mustang in top gear. Chug chug chug....
I really had no idea _how much_ custom fab work went into this car... I know they belabored this point to death, but I think I agree, it is incredible that Chrysler invested in the production of this back when they did and made it identical to the concept. Very risky... still a neat part of automotive history.
What a interview with engaging subject matter and questions, top notch editing and presentation. Outstanding job guys. You really got a great interview.
I find it interesting how they broke apart Plymouth. I had a 2000 Plymouth Neon. It drove much better than my girlfriend-at-the-time's Dodge Neon but I think it was mainly because mine had the premium alloys with 5 speed manual whereas hers had the steelies with the auto. Mine had more Mitsubishi logos on various parts under the hood than hers interestingly enough. After 2001, all Neons were Dodge but the Prowler went to Chrysler.
Congrats on finally getting your dream car (not this exact one, obviously). The Viper had wider tires than the Prowler, but the Prowler had bigger wheels.
@@TheStraightPipes don't really know to much I just remember my grandpa saying he worked on it at his engineering firm, he died when I was around 13. I would ask my uncle but I dont have contact with him. Don't know much more than that I'm afraid.
My dad is a car mechanic, and last year, he fixed a Plymouth Prowler. The owner said he could loan it a week or two, and dad called me one day and invited me to have a test drive it. He drove the car though, cause this car is expensive and i want not to crash it, since i'm a new driver and not with enough experience to drive a car with this magnitude, though i drive an Chevy 4 speed automatic with an v8 in it. But from what i experienced sitting in a car like this, whoah, fucking beast of a car, and the V6 in it is a fucking BEAST!
For real, though...I had a poster of this car when I was a kid! In this exact colour! I don't think I've ever watched or read a review one so thanks guys!
Great review! Definitely have to give credit to Chrysler for putting something totally different on the road. It's 20 years old now and still looks cool. Hurry and get to 50K, I want to see the special video.
As far as I'm concerned the straight pipes are putting out some of the best quality videos available on the net today. I haven't seen chemistry like yours since the original top gear. In five years you'll have a whole fleet of Prowlers, and Jacob will have an authentic toy model of an F40. Keep it real.
Tbh I love the Panoz Roadster (idk in which year it was made or anything). I first saw in it in video game called Midtown Madness and absolutely loved it. Back then when I was kid I didn't really knew about cars but I loved that car!
It was my dream car when I was 11 years old and this car is still looks beautiful even until today and I would say it’s an evergreen design and looks. I fell in love with this car for the first time I watched NightMan superhero TV series which was aired somewhere around year 2000 in Malaysia( it’s starts on 9pm every Wednesday) and was drove by Matt McColm alter ego as Johnny Domino a saxophonist the NightMan who has the telepathy powers to tracked evil down after being struck by lightning while playing inside the cable car. Armed with cutting edge Technology bulletproof suits, an anti-gravity belt that enables him to fly, a cape with holographic camouflage-style invisibility properties and a mask with a round red lens over his left eye, which includes the ability to see and aim in the dark and fire a laser beam. My childhood was very awesome 😎 and I still love this car until today.
This was my first car, 2001 Chrysler prowler in prowler pearl orange. Was a great little car, but always had issues with the amplifier because water could get in through the trunk and short it out.
More technically, it's generally referred to as "front-mid", to differentiate between this layout and the classic behind-the-cockpit setup. It will certainly help with the handling, but they're still usually somewhat front biased unless they use a transaxle at the rear in lieu of a conventional gearbox bolted to the engine.
@@aussiebloke609 Pay attention. The transaxle in the rear is mentioned in the video. No one ever referred to the 928 as a 'front mid' either. Perfect balance. Bias depends upon suspension setup with these cars, not where the part go.
@D.E.B. B Pay attention. I was giving a general rule about front-mid layouts. Incidentally, suspension setup is almost irrelevant because weight distribution bias is about the _distribution of the weight._ Meaning where the parts actually are in the vehicle, in relation to the wheelbase and track. Firm, soft, playing with toe or camper angles...these will do nothing to change how much weight is in the front, and how much is in the rear.
A year and a half later and I finally get around to watching this! Buy it asap Yuri but hold out for one with a Trailer. Tesla needs to bring these back btw.
Before the LC500 and the Prowler, there was a called the Subaru SVX. The production version of the SVX was almost identical to the concept car designed by famed Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro.
I remember having a friend that used to had one ( in purple) he took of that front bumper took of the front fenders ( over the tires) plus he swapped the motor with a Blower in it ( V8) That thing was a BEAST 👍🏻And especially LOUD.
Well done review. Informative. Entertaining. And not greedy with inserting a bunch of ads! (Like other car reviewer wannabes). Subscribed! Oh and I just decided to follow through with the purchase of the twin to this Prowler. Review request: 2020 GT500 Touring vs. Track Ed. Thanks guys!
4:50 That's one excited Yuri there, all skipping and running. Just like Richard Hammond on the Burma Special showing his white walled truck to Clarkson and May.
The Prowler is awesome. I want one. I know it doesn't have an amazing performance, but the performance is adequate. This is a badass cruising car, not a racing car.
funny you mentioned the concept car. I saw it first as a concept car at the auto show in NYC. I told myself right then and there, if they ever put this car into production, I was getting one. One day I pulled up to the light on Houston St and at the light on the opposite pulled up a guy in guess what..... A PLYMOUTH PROWLER !!!! I could not believe it. They actually made that concept car I saw so many years ago. I was mad at anyone and everyone for not telling me this car actually went into production😡. Anyway, the light turned green and my Dream car sped off. it was months later I was driving down Northen Blvd when another Prowler graced my peripheral vision as I passed. it was sitting on a showroom floor staring at me through the window. I immediately bust a u-turn. I had to see it up close and personal. I can go on, but to cut to the chase, I started my search and adopted one for keeps. it's been 15 beautiful years we've been together. Super great video guys. I really enjoyed it 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾. For my fellow Kat owners, I've posted some DIY fixes for Prowler issues. There's only a small number of us left, so we have to preserve Kats.
I remember when these came out..I was just a young kid and I wanted one so bad..I remember I kept trying to convince my mom to sell her gmc sierra and get one. She didn’t go for it though lol. Years later I still think they’re one of the coolest cars ever made.
My dad's prowler is silver with tinted windows, tinted tail lights, and the bumpers are painted silver to match the car so it looks more natural. Also, the front bumpers have gaping holes where those cheap, plastic, clear/white caps are. Not sure why they capped them but it looks odd. Oh and it has scissor doors. This is probably the only car where putting scissor doors on it actually makes it easier to enter.
