Old Warringah Veg Service Pt 1

Just when you might have thought I had nothing left to share from the former Veolia Warringah contract, I suddenly upload this footage! I captured this action way back in April 2009 during the school holidays, where I filmed a number of the existing Collex/Veolia trucks on a Friday prior to the upcoming takeover of the contract by URM. Looking back through my videos, it’s been over 10 years since I threw anything up of the manual vegetation collection in Warringah, so it seems about time I finally make this capture from long ago public. I still have a few more videos from the old Veolia contract to come one day in future, total blasts from the past and the cool era of truck equipment =D
In the late 1990s when Collex got their start in Warringah, I believe this was the time the kerbside vegetation service was introduced to residents. Householders would bin, box, bag and bundle their garden organics and once a month the rear loaders would come around to take everything away. All kinds of containers were used to hold the waste, from 55L round bins to 240L wheelie bins, old recycle crates, cardboard and foam boxes, even plant pots were filled, also a group of hessian sacks could be found crammed with veg. The 240L bins were sourced through the council or at the hardware store, so there were a range of different types in use, you could pick earlier ones with the distinct “Vegie Bin” stickers. I recall the weekend efforts by neighbours during summer mowing the lawns and cleaning out the gardens, it was also acceptable to present material on the nature strip days prior to the service taking place! Some of the set-outs by residents could get pretty massive and heavy as well - there was a 3 cubic metre limit per property, but that wasn’t always adhered to. This was pretty much the old school way of doing garden waste collections in areas of eastern Sydney, but only a couple councils continue to adopt this method today.
When I was just a kid, I remember seeing the Scania rear loaders that initially did the veg collections. The runner on the back would tell me to press the green button, on the control panel of what I now know was a Compaction Systems unit, and 5 year old Mitch pushed that button with all his might! haha There were three Scanias around and I recently learnt there was even a Merc Benz in the beginning, then in 2000 the company bought a brand new Volvo compactor for the veg runs. Once the new contract started in 2004 with Collex taking on the whole collections portfolio, the company ordered and deployed three new ACCOs with Compaction Systems Autopak bodies, featuring noticeable green signboards to advertise the vegetation service. All this time I thought these were 25m in capacity, but they may have actually been a touch smaller? No matter what body volume was available, these trucks packed excellent loads, squeezing in 8 to 9 tonnes on average, which is great considering the bulky/light nature of some material that went through the hoppers. These were great trucks all round though, awesome machinery to operate. I vividly recall my surprise first sighting of one of these, also the first occasion I laid eyes on what was the updated Compaction Systems wide comb lifter.
In my other Warringah veg videos of the ACCO rear loaders, I’ve only ever shown trucks 329 and 330, however now I can finally show off the third vehicle 328. I did put up a short video of 328 doing Ku-ring-gai clean-up ages ago, but this new video is the special one in its proper habitat where it belonged. Different about 328 as well was that it didn’t have the drum winch and trunnion locks, whereas 329/330 did, and I don’t really know why they did in the first place. That specific Friday when I was getting across to multiple Warringah trucks, about midmorning I located the permanent team that worked 328 not long after they returned from Kimbriki tip. In that suburb of Cromer I shot this single long part 1 clip as I followed them tackling a dead end street and then there’s part 2 with additional house presentations along the main road. You will realise the driver never makes an appearance at the back of the truck... the reason why is he was known to be a big bloke not really able to get in/out of the cab with ease. Pretty much all the loading duties are done by the offsider as you’ll see, but the driver does his best to get the truck positioned in the right spots and closer to the waste for quicker and effortless handling.

Another fantastic production man, top truck you’re showing right here. Veolia’s 1990s/2000s equipment was absolutely one of a kind, awesome to read you’ve got more to share! Also pretty cool to see another residential green waste run being serviced by a rear loader.

Cheers mate =D Yep these older fleets of theirs were definitely cool, there was some great equipment variety, boring as bat shit today. It's hectic looking back at how they bought a mix of CS, MJE and SPAK bodies brand new for one contract, it was much the same with Ku-ring-gai except they even had mini Papas rear loaders!

Great to see you uploading some more footage of the old Warringah Greens Service deffinatly brings back some childhood memories and makes me wonder about what each of the runs looked like back in the day, wouldn't surprise me if this very truck serviced my house too. I was clueless about what street this first video was filmed in until reading your other comment but i picked up straight away where the 2nd video was filmed. Good to see that the driver and loader have a good system worked out to make it a quick and efficient but what a shit feeling for the bloke on the back being stuck to service each pile by himself, Atleast he has his order of operations down pack placing majority of the MGB's on the right hand side of the lifter and throwing a most of the bundles on the LHS. Pretty intresting to know that 328 was the only one of the 3 Veg Rear Loaders that didnt have a winch cable on it. Do you know if either 329 or 330 would service any of the winch bins around the council or was that work mainly on the JP5's runs? I remember being a young kid at my grandparents house and seeing one of the veg trucks also doing clean up makes me wonder if two of them where dedicated to veg everyday and the 3rd would float around doing mainly veg but also the winch work and clean ups when needed. Mad video keen to see the other old Warringah Videos you have saved away!

Thought you might be pumped to see these videos pop up, you would've been barely out of nappies when these trucks were getting around! hahaha =P There's a document I'm not sure I've actually sent you yet, but it shows the old monthly zones across all of Warringah, I reckon that's something you'll be keen to have a look over =] I can't recall exactly what each truck did on all of the days, some I have no idea as I didn't ever jump on for certain zones, but I remember some rough borders and areas. Yeh mate this offsider was known to be a bit of a machine, going all day like this solo... must've been a massive relief when he got a different driver to cover here and there lol Honestly got no idea on what the go was with the winches and if they were ever even used... one thing I thought is maybe they just ordered a certain amount of them along with the City of Sydney fleet. I wonder if the CGW steel bins were possibly done by the local Veolia trade waste truck back then, perhaps it was even a front lift job in the past? Otherwise I guess that JP5/Volvo covered them Monday mornings prior to clean-up duties, much like it was done at URM with 166... I'm really curious about this now! These veg trucks did do clean-up at times, I even have some old footage on here of 329 packing bulk waste from when I tagged along during a Saturday morning catch-up round. Each of the three trucks had 20 permanent veg runs, being 5 runs per week for the 4 weekly rotation each month. However, there were those extra periods at the start/end of certain months where veg wasn't scheduled, so instead they would run on clean-up, unless the fulltime guys would organise to have the days off. As far as I know it was three veg runs all year round, never heard about the third run being cut out by two crews in winter or anything. On the contrary, I know sometimes a fourth rear loader would get sent out to help when they were getting smashed in summer, otherwise someone would jump in a side arm to help throw on the 240Ls.

Arh yes awesome the old Warringah Collex/Veolia contract from the past and with the manual greens collection which i think is good for certain places or certain days. I know there still a few councils in Sydney that still have a manual greens collections like this Mosman, North Sydney and Woollahra the places where its hard for side loaders. Can a food organics garden organics be done this way? but i assume food waste would have to be in the wheelie bins. That bin at 7:07 has green air vents just like the Canada bay and Ryde ones have
@AussieGarbo

Woollahra doesn't run a manual green waste collection, they do use rear loaders, but all material needs to be presented in bins. For quite a few years Woollahra has also been doing a weekly FOGO service, Inner West Council is introducing FOGO this October. Food waste has to be stored in sealed containers of some kind.

Go keep rubbing it, you lot had steps and could throw the cardboard boxes in too😊 Oh how I wish we had both of those luxuries when I did Knox bulk veg.

I don't think they were ever meant to throw the boxes in! haha I remember some grumpy woman at Kimbriki coming over to me when I was videoing the unloading and she was having a go about all the cardboard that comes with each load. I guess it was something they were doing for so long, nobody gave a shit enough to enforce any rules in Warringah anyway... what a major stuff around that would've been with the amount of boxes that could be presented too! Pretty sure I saw in Pittwater the crew would empty the boxes out, Mosman may have been the same, not sure about Manly prior to the 240Ls being rolled out.

Hey Mitch, just curious to know if your still working in the waste industry? I've just started at Cleanaway in the Randwick Contract

I sure am mate, these days I'm doing commercial garbage on a rear loader with a north shore company called Fretus Waste Services. Congrats on the new job, it's all changed a lot in Randwick since I worked there!

A lot of full bins, did the council every roll out actual council cans, or did they just buy them themselves
@AussieGarbo
@AussieGarbo 10 месяцев назад
All those round cans would've been purchased by residents themselves or retained from the old garbage service prior to wheelie bins being rolled out, as far as I know the council only provided 240Ls for the veg service.
@melbgarbofan
@melbgarbofan 10 месяцев назад
@@AussieGarbo Oh yeah nice, seems like every resident had the same idea to purchase them!
@AussieGarbo
@AussieGarbo 10 месяцев назад
Yep they were definitely fit for purpose those manual bins! Big enough to hold different materials, easy to carry, lids to seal the contents, fairly durable and of course reusable for each collection schedule. I recall at my old house we just had two former recycling crates to use for veg, and the home before that one I remember the nearby IGA grocery store would give away empty boxes for free, I'm sure lots of locals used them for veg collections.

@@AussieGarbo That’s awesome, yes I noticed in the video a few people were using boxes, it sure got the job done, I’ve never seen a council do that other than this one, Pretty cool
