It made our list of favorite adaptations of all time so here's a deep dive into the bonkers story of a man locked away by for years, and his struggle to get revenge. Park Chan-wook's incredible 2003 film deviates from the original manga in just a few VERY meaningful ways, so here's your SPOILER WARNING! It's time to ask, What's the Difference?

WonPorky I just finished the manga. It makes abit of sense. He hypnotized them to fall in love and then they really started to like each other, however if you remember there is a lock on a second hypnosis, so in the epilogue they show got dreaming where this gets unlocked by the “flowers” song and eri kills herself, a final blow from dojima to goto. He always wants to have that threat over him.

For the last scene, the main actor Choi Minsik asked the director Park Chanwook whether Daesu still knew Mido's his daughter. The director didn't give him an answer or any direction on that and went on filming the scene since he wanted it to be an open ending. The main actor, Choi Minsik later said he had figured he could not have acted Daesu in that scene without settling his mind, so he acted while having an image of Daesu failing to lose his memory and still knowing the truth.

I haven't seen it, but I'm just assuming the American one did 20yrs to make sure the daughter was old enough. Anything under 19-18 would just seem like an old guy taking advantage of a young girl, but typically past 19-20 and Americans assume you can make your own decisions and maybe it was intended to feel more consensual.. Idk. But I am willing to bet the longer time was to make the daughter older. I'd bet money on it.

Park chan wook the South Korean director who adapted oldboy said in an interview he felt the manga would not translate well cinematically and that while peeing he tried to ask the right questions that would lead to answers. Like why 15 years maybe it's enough time for the daughter to grow up but why would the villan want that... so on so on. I'd like to mention that Old Boy is part of a trilogy called The Trilogy of Vengeance (or something like that), along with Sympathy for Mr Vengeance and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. I totally recommend all of them as they share a final plot twist that you never see coming.

@amjiva
@amjiva 6 лет назад
Yeah, Lady Vengeance didn't have a twist, and it was the weakest of all 3 films. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance didn't really have a twist either. Oldboy is the one that is popular because of the wild twist. However, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is the overall superior film. It's basically a Greek tragedy, and it's shot so wonderfully. Oldboy has plot devices that seem more contrived. Mr. V flows more organically.

swishpronoob: It doesn't matter; unlike most Western film trilogies, with Park Chan Wook's "Vengeance Trilogy" instead of being linked by plot or by characters the movies are instead linked by theme. However, if you do want a real recommendation, I would just watch them in the order that in which they were originally released (FUN FACT: One major advantage of watching them in order despite not mattering from a plot standpoint is that you get to see how badass of actor Choi Min-sik is after watching him make the leap from playing the protagonist role in "Oldboy" to portraying the antagonist in "Lady Vengeance"! :D).

The thing that killed me about the Spike Lee film is that the idea behind "Oldboy" actually has a lot of potential for remakes/spin-offs/etc. Someone who is held captive against their will only to suddenly be let free? There's hundreds and hundreds of different directions that story could go! So why just retell the exact same story over again? If they ever try to remake it again, I hope they just use the set-up but come up with an original storyline and characters.

The manga isn't super long either. Manga tends to be brief and fly fast. It's not a movie for art but 9 volumes is not long for manga. The manga is pretty decent. The movie has some cool stuff and is a notch above it but the manga adaptation that was straight would be good too. The villain motivation is given gravity by the extent that he went. Not really the action that it was. The twist and the villain motivation aren't the same. If by twist you mean him sleeping with his daughter because the protagonist really doesn't care that some dude slept with some girl(as he saw it).

It's interesting to note that, while, in the manga, Ojisan and Eri are not explicitly revealed to be related, they still have the same distinct nose and, out of all the characters in the manga (however important or trivial), they are the only ones to have it. It's like Bram Stoker's Dracula : in the novel, Dracula and his female companions have the same distinct aquiline nose and it's never explained if they are family members - let alone the exact nature of their relationship (friends, father and daughters, teacher and apprentices or lovers). Also, even after they both learn their love was caused by hypnosis, they still decide to be a couple - though they still decide to go out of their way to keep their relationship hidden from every single person who learned about the hypnosis.

The Korean film is a master piece and the ending enhances it without the ending it is just another good movie. The pacing is right, the color everything it all seems surreal...pacing is so important in a film like this to believe how the character becomes broken to share his depression elation emotional thoughts and him falling in love. The US version does none of this rushes everything and doesn't leave you asking questions.

I want to encourage fans of this movie to also check out the hollywood remake, preferably watch them both back to back. Seeing the flat and lifeless cinematography of the Spike Jonze version, the subpar editing, the generic soundtrack, the "just gimme my paycheck" acting and especially how laughably bad they handled the big reveal scene at the end will increase your appreciation for the original even more.

And if you really want to be offended, check out the blatant Bollywood ripoff of Oldboy entitled, "Zinda." Just search RU-vid for Zinda fight scene or hammer fight scene. It's so fucking bad. They even give the Indian star the same clothes and haircut as Oh Dae-su. Then the director had the audacity to say that his movie wasn't a remake and gave no credit to the original film or the manga.

This is in my top 10 movies of all time. I just love and it's the movie that got me into oriental cinema. Masterpiece. Great work on the video, just a thing that I wanna point out: in the end of the movie Dae-Su, that asked the hypnotist to erase his memory, when first hugs Mi-Do, is happy cause he doesn't remember that she is his daughter, but then is face morphs into disgust/terror, almost as in the end the hypnosis didn't work out. But then it ends and you're left with that mixed feelings, I think that part is absolutely brilliant, whether it was real or not. Fav channel on youtube by the way. Awesome work, everytime.

I loved the first adaptation of the manga the best cause it's what introduced me to the manga. And because the twist at the end was something I would have never guessed and caught me completely off guard. The only movie ever to have me shouting at the screen, "what?!".

YES! I LOVE the movie, but something that has always bugged me is that while Oh Dae-su is by no means an angle or great guy (ain't evil that is for sure) he wasn't the one that started spreading the rumor about Lee Woo-jin's sister. Yeah he saw them but it was his friend Joo-hwan started spreading it! I mean I get that Dae-su told what he saw but he also told his friend not to tell anyone, in more of a, "wow that was a odd thing I saw...oh well, BETTER NOT TELL ANYONE!" then changed schools cause he was moving! I know it's opinion, but the way I see it the guy you wanna luck up for really kicking it off is Joo-hwan! Maybe find Dae-su and have a few guys beat him up with a message of "keep your mouth shut!" I don't know that is just my opinion!
@tiaaaron3278
@tiaaaron3278 3 года назад
You're right but Woo-jin was never exactly in his right mind either. He just looked for someone to blame for his problems and Dae-su seemed like the perfect culprit. He eavesdropped, watched the sibling sex and ignited this mess. He also had daughter which Woo-jin could and did exploit. That drunk friend guy didn't have anyone (Woo-jin killed him anyways) and while he was guilty too, he didn't start the chain of events that led to the sister's death.

I honestly watched the S. Lee version wondering why they even bothered. Most of the changes were so minute, it may as well have been a shot for shot remake (Ala Psycho w/ Vince Vaughn) and what was changed was for the worse. Admittedly, I went in expecting it to be worse so was pleasantly surprised it wasn't another "Ring" scenario but... it was utterly pointless and I could've used that time watching the Korean version.

Except, they're talking here about adaptations. Movies taking ideas that originate from books and turning them into new pieces of art while keeping contact with the feel of the source material. What you're talking about is a novelisation of a blockbuster, made to sell money, and of course the book is going to be different, since the movies were so poorly written, they would've had to be brain dead to sell the script beat for beat.
