I completely agree with you, I had almost the exact same experience about a year before I became an apprentice. The man who made me a small s-hook, with a simple diamond twist in the middle, became my teacher, and I can honestly tell you, asking him how long he'd been a blacksmith was the best decision I've ever made.
i appreciate the skill ,, at ''olde sturbridge village'' the smithies used to let me watch before the visitors came ,, i do not have hands on though ,,, one smithy made me a twisted hook in about 5mins ,, i was amazed ,, from nothing but a hunk of metal ,, a beautiful hook in my hand ,, loved it ,, i realized that you could read books for a thousand yrs and not have an idea of what it takes to craft hot metal
I'm not denying that it can be awkward to make a snail, but for the majority of smiths, a snail is one of the first things we make. When I did my apprenticeship, the second thing I ever made was actually a snail, the reason for this is that it includes all four of the most important parts of blacksmithing, you learn to bend while doing the scroll for the shell, to weld while bending the bar back on itself to form the tail and body, and to taper while you do the eye stalks. :)
the shite you can make from braces for log cabins, towel racks, spice racks, toilet paper rack, candle holders, to flower holders and all kinds of hangers the list is endless. I ringing of that anvil I really miss it.
Brilliant craftsmanship! You sure did make that look easy. Do you do any competitions, I wish I had that kind of skill. Love the bed of coals forge. I really love to see people kickin' old-school :)
I've watched alot of black smithing videos and have never seen a shop set up like yours. I noticed that the water trough was right next to the forge and the bender that fits in the hardy hole is something ill have to try. Thanks!
You could probably find one of those day courses in blacksmithing that gives you a try, but it depends where you live. I'm actually looking to get into blacksmithing, I've found my own blacksmith to teach me :D
I don't know, I find these things to be very interesting. And the snail is cute! I would definitely use it as a garden decoration. What did you think he was making?
I know, it's such an anticlimax. It was looking more and more awesome and just at the crescendo... it turned out to be a tacky snail that looks like it belongs alongside gnomes in a mad person's garden.
It doesn't have to be. I contacted a local blacksmith and went to meet him. half an hour later and he offered that I come over on Saturdays and work with him and he'll get me on the forge straight away. It is also very likely that I'll be getting an apprenticeship in welding. I didn't apply through some government scheme, I went and contacted a metal working co. It's only dying because not enough people have motivation to seek opportunities and the modern world only applies for jobs it sees.
Oh, by 'these things' I just meant blacksmithing. Call me naive, but I didn't know it was still practiced, and I'd LOVE to try it. I'm into any kind of art and I think it would be endless fun to be able to do something like this. Oh, I see. I can understand why you would find this a bit anticlimactic then XD I was amazed when I saw that he made a snail. Maybe I'm just too easily impressed XD
I believe people do shite they did when they were young and they like to do is what keeps you interested. I started crabbing and fishing at 7 years old and was good at it and liked the smell of the crabs and the fish and did this till I was 20 and then at 20 worked in a black smith shop. The other day we went to a seafood place and the smell of the seafood was unreal and the guy had a blacksmith shop in the back and he let me heat up some steel and and beat it the ringing was like Nirvana.
Why don't you do it now? I'm looking to get an apprenticeship as a welder and do blacksmithing in my free time, I've spoken to a local blacksmith who said he'd show me the ropes once a week which is neat.
You have a lot of experience! I would really appreciate your advice when viewing my video, what good can advise a novice in this difficult, but very interesting profession!
Each to their own I guess :) What do you mean "these things"? I thought he was recreating an archeological find, or at least something he had seen that had been dug up. It was starting to look like the top of those ornamental spears.
Blacksmithing was a lot easier when pure iron was available.. . much more malleable and easy to weld. .. now you can only get steel bars. . much harder to work with although of course it is more rigid than iron.
@youtubian2500 c´mon, dude, Sauron never was in Khazad-dûm, that place always was the realm of Dwarves lords, the forge of Sauron was the fire of Destiny Mountain, Balrogs was demons of the ancient world, ancient Maia, old espirits was chose follow Melkor, the first Dark Lord....by the way, I agree you when you say Sauron is a foe beyond any forge, but dont worry, we have always with the aid of Aüle, the Great Blacksmith, he kick the ass to Sauron from here to Middle Earth, ehheheheeh :D
