I recently got hands-on with one of my favourite Speedmasters - the Omega Speedmaster Apollo 8 Dark Side of the Moon.
Released in 2018 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of NASA's Apollo 8 lunar mission, this very special modern take on the iconic Speedy features an incredible skeletonised and 'laster-ablated' dial, as well as a gorgeous case back that reveals a movement that's unique to this very special watch.
Could this be the ultimate modern take on the iconic Omega Speedmaster?
Let me know what you think of the Apollo 8 in the comments!

Question of the day: Apollo 8 or the sapphire sandwich and £1,500 change?

Got the Apollo 8 at 2020 during pandemic, I was flying to another side of China just for getting this watch, I fail in love with it when the first Time I saw it. It’s been 2 years and I still love it so much, the most thing attracts me is it’s the only hollow out design for omega, and it’s so special that everyone never seen it before, also the story behind the dark side of the moon just way to amazing, I’ll love it as much as I love it run 10 years latter❤

As an Apollo8 owner, I’d agree about the difficulty actually telling the time…but, what I’ve found is that if you don’t look at the face directly, but at a slight angle, the hands will catch some light, and as they are highly reflective will usually become pretty easy to see…just sayin’

I've had watches before where I've had to angle them in the light to be able to read the dial! Despite these minor gripes the Apollo 8 is still a stunning piece imo. Thanks for watching and I hope I earned your sub 🙏👍

What an interesting point you mentioned about the color contrast of second and hour /min hands . I had never noticed that 🙌🏼

I own this watch, wear it everyday. You get used to the dial. And it's surprisingly rare, and it doesn't look like a super-expensive watch, and it's super-light (89 grams).

I'm so pleased I bought this Apollo 8, it's awesome design impresses me every time I look at it (with my glasses on!). Totally agree with the gripes: when you spend 8 grand on a watch you expect a bit of theatre when you open the box. I don't mean LEDs or musical ballerinas but some memorabilia of the event the watch commemorates should be included. Shame on you Omega for being so tight-fisted! And it definitely needs more contrast on the hands. Brilliant review Simon

How I feel about my no time to die watch. Absolutely love it, but for almost 10 grand, I'd like more than a canvas case with 007 on it.

That's a great watch! Though I agree it should be packaged in something that adds a bit more drama with more Bond-related goodies. Do you have it on the bracelet or NATO?

I have one and I really love it. For the moon watch I prefer to go vintage I have one from 1969. I also love the Apollo 17 45 anniversary in gold

Insane to think that this was all achieved before you could buy a colour tv and my pc would be the size of my house. Not surprising people question that it even happened!

Great video. Your channel has a bright future. Minor correction from a space nut. Apollo 8 was the first flight of the Saturn V but the Saturn V did not power all of the remaining Apollo flights as the Saturn 1 was used for the Apollo-Soyuz mission as well as for 3 flights to Skylab.

Thanks so much for the kind words - and for the correction! 🙏 So a space nut and a watch nut I assume as you found my tiny channel?! What are your thoughts on the Apollo 8?

@@Escapement24 My family, knowing me as a space nut and watch nut, gave me a Speedmaster (calibre 1863) as a retirement gift. For all of those reasons it is very special to me. So obviously biased, but I prefer the look of the traditional Speedy over the black out Apollo 8 version. There is a great book about the Apollo 8 mission titled "Rocket Men" - I might have to read it again to see if there are any Omega references!. Subscribed and look forward to your content.

What a great gift - I think I need to retire soon!!! My Monaco was a surprise gift from my wife many years ago (though if you've seen the video you'll already know!). Thanks for the tip on the book. Have you read 'Moondust: the men who fell to earth"? Great book with interviews with the Apollo astronauts about how the moon missions changed their view of life.

It's a stunning watch Jeff, congrats! In spite of the few flaws/niggles I pointed out in the video, of all the Speedmaster's I think it's my favourite - and I've got a phone for telling the time anyway 😂

Certainly one very interesting watch and it does sit well in the Speedmaster collection, not sure if I will get one tho, I do prefer the more vintage looking Speedmasters. Great video 👍

Thanks for watching 🙏👍 Which is your favourite Speedy reference? I saw a 1969 MK II for sale yesterday at a good price and I'm very tempted 🤔

@@Escapement24 It doesn't have to be a real vintage model, eventhough those are of course great too, I really like the newer sort of remastered 321 and also the First Omega in Space, which is not that easy to get anymore, but fortunately I already have it. The MK ll looks a bit odd on my wrist, as it's very chunky in my opinion, mostly due to the very solid case, but certainly a nice watch, I had one like four years back. I would love to get the Apollo 11 50th anniversary edition in yellow gold because I love the red bezel in combination with the gold, but my AD told me that that's probably not going to happen, as they only got a single one, which is already gone. Oh well, happens.
@bmwatches8508

@@Escapement24 What do you think about that watch? A bit to much gold or wearable? I doubt that it would get a lot of wrist time with me, but it would definitely be something to just enjoy, I think.
@Escapement24
@Escapement24 2 года назад
I haven't yet tried on the MK II - the measurements make it sound like it could be a bit too heavy, but I really like the 70s retro looks. I tried on a sapphire sandwich 3861 last weekend and it felt good, but the quality of the bracelet wasn't quite what I was expecting for a £6k watch.
@bmwatches8508

@@Escapement24 The weight isn't really a mayor issue with Omega watches in Stainless steel, mine was probably about the same as a submariner would be, but way more bulky, which doesn't work well with my rather small wrists. The bracelets are a bit meh when it comes to the more affordable Speedys, a bit similar to Grand Seiko and their bracelets, which are simply a shame for the price, that's why I usually go with straps on Omega watches. They make great straps and you save a bit of money too. Some brands are lacking a balance of quality for the entire watch, Omega sadly is one of them with some watches. I honestly think that Rolex has that dialed in perfectly, everything has the same Quality, including the box. Might not be the highest quality possible, of course not, but it's very consistent. The good thing about that is that you won't be disappointed with some part of the watch. But anyways, I think Omega produces a lot of great watches and there are plenty of models out there that are dialed in really well, I think you will find the perfect one for you eventually 👍

You're spot in with this review, I totally agree with the cons of this watch you've mentioned. My ultimate grail Speedy is the Snoopy 50th anniversary and hoping to get a call from my AD one day.🙏🍀🤞 I would have pulled the trigger on the latest Speedy if it wasn't for clasp which isn't on the fly adjustable. 🙄 Come on Omega, if Tudor can do it..
@Escapement24
@Escapement24 2 года назад
Thanks man 👍 I agree that Tudor are showing Omega the way in some areas. Not sure if you saw my video about the Black Bay Ceramic but that's killer value compared to equivalent Omega IMO. I tried on a sapphire sandwich Speedy 3861 last weekend as owning a Speedy has kind of got under my skin now, but I kept comparing it to the Apollo 8 and it doesn't match up sadly. The bracelet and clasp didn't feel great so I totally agree on that too. Thanks for watching and I hope I earned your sub 🙏👍
