"The Big Bopper" was J.P. Richardson. He died at age 28 in the infamous plane crash that also killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the pilot Roger Peterson. It was February 3 ,1959, and has become known as "The Day the Music Died".

Joanne Vincent: The plane crashed in a field about a mile from my grandparents' house when I was 12. I was devastated. They were on a tour called "The Winter Dance Party". Their last performance was at The Surf Ballroom, and the first weekend in February every year The Surf holds "The Winter Dance Party". Even after all these decades, it still draws a big crowd of people from all over the country and some from other countries. It's a really cool retro place, and they've preserved the feel of the old days and the history of music through articles, mementos, etc. Also, the farmer who owned the field built a memorial at the crash site which is still there and can be visited by fans. Being tragically linked to Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens, many people tend to overlook the other great recording artist on that ominous plane ride.....but there would've been a lot more great music to come from this guy if not for that fateful night!

Waylon Jennings was supposed to be on that plane also, but everyone apparently "drew straws" to decide who would ride the bus with its broken heater or take the plane. In a way, he lucked out. Still a terrible tragedy though 😢.

It's about time someone rediscovered J.P. Richardson, "The Big Bopper", who was a radio DJ by profession. He recorded this song, which was a smash hit, and released one album. Sadly, he died in the same plane crash as Buddy Holly and RItchie Valens. I've always considered him to be the first rapper.

You MUST see this one live: Big Bopper - Chantilly Lace (1958) (2:28). He, along with two other rising stars, were tragically killed in a plane crash in 1959. It's called "the day the music died". Please react to the other two also: Buddy Holly & The Crickets "Peggy Sue" on The Ed Sullivan Show (1:55) and Ritchie Valens - La Bamba (Live) (2:49). I couldn't find a live performance of La Bamba, but this one includes b/w pics. Ritchie was only 17 when he died. Please don't get confused by doing Lou Diamond Phillips who starred in the movie about Ritchie Valens.

Man, you guys are trippin' today, but I like it! This song was written by Jiles Perry Richardson, "The Big Bopper". The song is about a young man flirting with his girlfriend on the telephone and listing things about her that he likes, including: Chantilly lace and a pretty face And a pony tail hangin' down A wiggle in her walk and a giggle in her talk Make the world go 'round. The song begins with the sound of a telephone ringing, and is answered by the Big Bopper shouting: "HELLO-O-O-O BABY!" Released in 1958...

Love this - my 81-year-old Mum remembers jiving to this with my Dad way back in the late 1950's. She has said Dad used to throw her over his shoulders when they jived, and that's the reason why she married him in 1959, and I came along in 1961. They still used to jive in the kitchen when I was a small child, but I can't remember him ever lifting her!

The "Big Bopper" (aka) Jiles Perry Richardson, Ritchie Valens, And Buddy Holly. All became synonymous and legendary by the song "American Pie" (1971) written and perform by the great Don McClean. In his song there is a phrase that says "The three men I admired most. The Father, Son and Holy Ghost. They caught the last train for the coast. The day the music died." The 3 men are... The Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens, and Buddy Holly who all died on February 3rd, 1959 in a plane crash. It was the end of the decade that gave birth to "Rock & Roll music." And music and style will never be the same again. Great reaction as always.

A great story: The Big Boppers wife was pregnant with their son when he died in the plane crash...a few yrs ago his body was exhumed to determine the cause of death (some thought he was shot) turns out the embalming process was done so good on him that his body was nearly perfectly preserved after nearly 60yrs in the grave...It was then that the Big Boppers son got to look upon his fathers face for the first time in his life

Back in the late 70's, when my brother was a teenager, the church we attended had a tradition of the adults (parents and grandparents) would provide the entertainment for the Valentine's Day "Sweetheart Banquet" for the church's teenagers. My father, who was in his 40's at the time, was 6'2" and in good shape for his age) did a lip syncing impersonation of The Big Bopper! Everyone LOVED it, except my poor 15 yr old brother, who was so embarrassed that he nearly sank through the floor. Years later even he admitted that Dad had done a great job!

I was four years old when this song came out, and within a couple weeks my brother (7) and I knew all the words and would sing it over and over. To this day I can still do that "Oh baby that's what I like!" with a bit of a growl, and "I ain't got nooooo money, Honey" became one of our tag lines when we wanted something. Since we shortly had three younger siblings, our parents (who were immune to "cute") would advise us to earn some money and buy it ourselves.

The Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson) died in the plane crash with Buddy Holly (whose death was the inspiration for "American Pie" by Don McClean) and Ritchie Valens. They were traveling on "The Winter Dance Tour" departing Iowa for Minnesota and it was c.o.l.d. and the Big Bopper was feeling ill. Waylon Jennings was playing bass in Holly's band and gave up his seat on the plane to J.P. so he could get to the next stop in Minnesota more quickly. Waylon was haunted by the tragedy for a long time.
