But really I am preparing for next year. The rules stated it "can't contain any copyrighted works at all" and yet the Best Picture Winner prominently displays many works of copyright such as Apple, Apple Watch, Siri, as well as Siri's Voice and additionally the dive gear brands. It's not as though it's just a one off Nike Swoosh or something...the entire works point, reveal and climax cruxes on the concept of Apple and Apple Watch and Siri....You know like an actual humorous advertisement or something. I'm just surprised and worked hard to eliminate all works of copyright from my entry and am genuinely perplexed Anyway thanks for the competition it was a fun one indeed, really had to stretch the mind for this time format
@Jetsudo
@Jetsudo 5 лет назад
I know that one of the rules is like 'cannot have been shown before' so I feel this was like some ad they have made and it either didn't get used, or will get used soon enough.
@personal61319
@personal61319 5 лет назад
@@Jetsudo That is speculative though, we might assume the production was for this contest and have no reason to question that. I'm more wondering about next year and also what was meant by no copyright....it seems he likely meant copyright sound or moving picture but in my understanding it meant similar rules to say stock footage wherein any and all copyright content is disallowed for commercial licensure...
@Jetsudo
@Jetsudo 5 лет назад
@@personal61319 yeah it was an assumption on my behalf. I understand what you're saying though.

JESUS!!! Fever dream is EXACTLY the type of horror that *truly* gets under my skin. When you can’t control anything and it’s disturbing on a visceral level...like bizarre things that don’t look scary, but people are just off enough to scare the SHIT out of you!!!! I wish I could come up with stuff like that! I know it must’ve been hard to pick a winner. That shark one scared me, too. I have extreme ocean and shark phobia...so I had a mild panic attack when that shark appeared. I’m going to watch the others. What fun!!! I love this!!!!
@Doctopie
@Doctopie 5 лет назад
Hey man I made Fever dream and yeah thats totally what I was going for. Subtle clues that something's off is always terrifying for me! Super appreciate the feedback!!
@sign543
@sign543 5 лет назад
Doctopie I think you are a talented filmmaker. That short 1-minute film disturbed me! I love it! I love that kind of feel to a film. Again, it’s hard to describe. It feels like what hell might be like if it existed. That kind of “monster” is impossible to fight. That’s what makes it so scary to me. I hope you pursue that style in a longer film! Great job, guys.
@Doctopie
@Doctopie 5 лет назад

Disappointing winner. In my opinion, A mother was clearly far more superior as an overall and it checked every box to what makes a great short film in my opinion.

Been watching you guys for years and have never been more disappointed in the winner. They broke the copyright rules and made a 15 second film. Really? I'm so glad I didn't have enough time to submit a film for this contest. I would've been livid. I'm done with whatever contests you do in the future and I'm sure there are many like me who feel the same.

Really impressed by all the ones mentioned except the Best Film winner. Plus it used a copyrighted logo for Apple, which I thought we weren’t allowed to do.
@redbeardnofear
@redbeardnofear 5 лет назад
Also, we used an iPhone flashlight as a practical in my entry and the actor made sure to cover the logo in the shot and said "I don't want to do a commercial for Apple" as a joke -- pretty great irony that the winner was a literal commercial for Apple
@BlenderDumbass
@BlenderDumbass 5 лет назад
Logo is not a copyright, it's trademark. And there is not a big deal of using trademark. Unless it's completely misrepresents the brand.

KVK Studios™ - The Ultimate Intros & Motion Graphics Channel Fair use laws are murky in the US but they generally say someone else’s IP can be used for news reporting, criticism, research, and education. This contest was for prizes with monetary value, so it’s not as cut and dry. There was no need for an ad hominem attack
@redbeardnofear
@redbeardnofear 5 лет назад
@@BlenderDumbass Interesting. It's weird though because I shoot for college basketball for ESPN and we had to have a commentator change her shirt because she was wearing a sweater with the Marvel comics logo. And they filmed Chicago PD at a bar that my buddy owns and had to flip around all the liquor bottles so no logos showed in the background of any shots. Fair Use laws are so weird and murky.
@cobraohm
@cobraohm 5 лет назад
This is most definitely not under fair use... I don't think you understand copyright or trademark laws very well. If you're doing it to make money, which this counts, it's even worse. They used Siri's voice, the same font, logo, etc. Apple could easily without problem call copyright infringement. They won't, it's free advertisement and all, but would easily win a case.

I understand that the Apple Watch ad may have executed a joke that could subjectively be considered "more entertaining" or "effective" than...all the thousand other entries...but to award that BEST FILM when there were clearly other pieces of work that had larger, more powerful and intimate themes that matter more than just a quick joke is a little underwhelming. I'm not saying it wasn't a funny short either, but to value that brief, 15s bait and switch over literally any other film that showcased MORE talent and focus on story/theme than, again, an advertisement for an Apple product. I think that's just a bit in bad taste for an amateur short film competition, regardless of how much anyone laughed watching it. Happiness is a cheap drug, and as an avid Film Riot viewer, my mouth dropped when they revealed the Apple ad to be BEST FILM. What kind of precedent is that supposed to set for any future Monday challenges? Only one way to find out I guess.

Holy moly! We are so grateful to win Best Directing and honored to be considered for Best Overall! A big thanks to the Film Riot team and Filmstro for putting this on, and a huge round of applause for the finalists and other entries. We watched hundreds of submissions and were blown away to find out there were thousands. We’re thrilled to be part of such a talented cohort! --- We’ve seen some questions in the comment section about how some of these shorts were made, so in the spirit of keeping the filmmaking learning going, we’re happy to answer questions about how we made Kick Me, the gear we used, how much we spent, the recipe for the spaghetti we made for craft…you get the idea.
@patrickb4750
@patrickb4750 5 лет назад
That would be amazingly helpful! Perhaps you could share your process, things your learnt and techniques? I find the what's and why's rather than gear more useful, so maybe create a commentary video, including the writer, director, DOP and editor?? Great, great job btw!

@kunai8604 5 лет назад
Word.
@JefferiesBrothers
@JefferiesBrothers 5 лет назад
@@patrickb4750 I don't think we'll have time for a commentary, but we can elaborate on the process! We spend a ton of time thinking of ideas for a story, which is the hardest part. Once we had the premise of the film - a bully discovers anything he sticks on his coworkers’ back comes true - we had to make it matter to the characters. We brainstormed what the worst thing you could do with this power would be and landed on the bully taking over this coworkers’ life. We got there by writing out “Me” a bunch of times and coming up with different things to put in front of it. When we got to plotting the story we used the story clock notebook from plot devices, which is a handy way of writing in setups and payoffs. We did a pre-vis video for timing's sake because we weren't sure we could tell it all in a minute. Ted and I filmed ourselves for a few hours acting all the roles and we edited it to make sure it could fit. We’ll post that pre-vis soon! It's hilariously bad. We also did some rough storyboarding and a shotlist, which makes it feel like you have a plan when you start filming. But we always stay open to improv and feedback about how to make the film better during the process. - Marshall

Hey we all feel like we should've won, I mean we all worked extremely hard and probably stayed up late to edit! But look at the lighting these people had you can't achieve that in post, they worked hard too! Anyways heads up guys! I lost and I traveled far to film and spent money on costumes and stayed up late to edit so I'm feeling it just as much as you are! We all get better through time and soon you'll realize how far you've got through your films! Look at Film Riot! Ryan criticing his own first film and he laughed at it! And then look at their latest short film it looks like a straight Hollywood production! Everyone gets better through time and your one of them!

Inspiring work by all the winners and the runners up! Ryan, please don't stop making these contests, I do believe that this type of exposure have the potential of becoming life changing events. I know what I'm talking about. Why you ask? Well, this was my second short film ever. I made my first short during the summer for a NASA sponsored contest, and won an award for the most inspiring film. That competition was judge by Gareth Edwards, you know that guy from the Star Wars movie :), One unexpected life changing event, for me, was that at the award ceremony I got to meet and talk all night with Gareth. Yes, that actually happened, thankfully my wife was there to help me keep my cool. After that, of course that I got me thinking, huh maybe I'm good at this. So, I created a one minute short and entered the contest. But this time around, I didn't win, nor got mentioned. So what does this means... It means that I have at least a year to make more short films and come up with a better one for next year contest. Unless Gareth calls me and I join the rebellion. Big Love!

Seems a lot of us agree about the insult of the Apple commercial winning. Funny, yes, but even just compared to the winners of the other categories, it's a bit a slap in the face to everyone who worked on a really thought out and well executed concept. Also, saying you got thousands of submissions but all the same films were in all categories really makes me wonder how many of the films you guys actually watched... I feel picking that ad as the winner is just to discourage people next year so maybe they don't get so many submissions.

I wasn't able to submit due to time restrictions, but im impressed with the talent that was shown. I do think it's unfair though that every category pretty much had the same films nominated, lowering the chance for anyone else to win. And just for the record, I don't know how the last film beat out Fever Dream or Mother. That's a head scratcher

How will the Connolly boys get out this one? Lol honestly I didn’t enter but the backlash on the winner is real though, I’m sure you guys are already looking into it and will have to make adjustments next year or on the next one. An ad can be a short film but it’s still an ad to promote a production and does not hit you at an emotional level like films do, also if your rules say no copyright material and people are calling you out on it, I say damage control is in full effect. Still this was fun to watch and the level craftsmanship on all the videos were stellar even the apple ad and hope to achieve that level of video work one day. Keep up the awesome work guys!

I really think you guys are the reason for at least some of these talented filmmakers and you should take great pride in that. You've definitely helped this filmmaker along the way. Just want to let you know that you are appreciated.

in future it would be good for you guys to select all the finalists, and get the audience to decide the winner, you guys can have your pick as well like an 'our pick' but best to leave the actual winner to the fans. This way, the voting system will require people to reach out to a lot more people to vote for their film thus bringing more people to see this wonderful competition. Just a thought, Thanks.

The Shark was hilarious! I actually lol'ed as well. Great submissions and really liked The Mother. I didn't submit this time around because I'm not up to those standards yet, but soon... soon damn it.

Hi guys, I'm the father of "My own", one of the short films that raced for the victory of this competition. Actually, we should have participated in the "One minute Short Film realized in 10 hours". The short film, for issues related to work and family commitments, was created on December 3rd at 10 am, organized by 2 pm, shot from 5 pm to 6 pm, edited and videocomposed until 11.45 pm and then posted at 11.50 pm. In short (ahahahahahahahaha), a delirium. I write this not to justify our teamwork but to tell you that, despite everything, we wanted to be part of this fantastic contest. So congratulations to everyone, the short films chosen are great. Congratulations to Filmstro, an incredible program with great potential yet to be implemented. But above all, congratulations to Film Riot. You are great, immense, inspiring and powerful! :) If we do not have to hear each other soon, Merry Christmas and an incredible 2019. You deserve it.

While I disagree with the winner of Best Picture, I admire the winners of all the other categories and enjoyed the competition enough to not feel terribly salty. It got me to make my best looking short and fire actual blanks in a flintlock pistol. Fun was had and goals were accomplished. For that, I am thankful.
