Monthly online meeting, hosted by Officials Institute chairman, Joshua Schroeder, on 1/19/23 focused on the topic of Substitutions. Why focus on subs for a meeting? Well, many times we simply go through the motions, not even realizing how we handle subs, but when something happens that is, not to plan, what do we do? That is what this meeting talks about. Tips and suggestions on how to handle uncommon or unusual substitution situations.
The Officials Institute believes watching video together builds confidence in individuals and at the same time as a community of officials. This helps promote support for each other and keeps us all in a perpetual state of learning. All videos shown in this meeting are NFHS high school basketball games.
This online meeting will showcase 8 different video clips discussing substitutions AND includes 1 BONUS CLIP.
0:00 - Intro
0:21 - After a made free throw who beckons in the subs? Trail, Center or Lead.
6:02 - New Lead should pass of the holding of substitutions to the Center and get into position for throw in.
10:25 - Don't allow subs to stand in front of scorer.
15:55 - During a free throw a sub walks onto the court? What should we do?
27:24 - Injured player on a shooting play and the coach comes onto the court to provide some aid. Who shoots free throws? Does he have to come out?
34:08 - When a player is told to wait to come in, we still need to beckon after we're done reporting.
38:15 - Blood is found on a free thrower. Watch how they handled it. What is the correct procedure.
41:20 - Substitutes standing up in front of the table need to be addressed.
47:23 - BONUS CLIP
50:30 - Next Meeting - COACHES
Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience. Breaking down film in slow motion and freeze frames helps to "retrain our brain" so when we see the same plays in real time we are in a better position mentally to get the call right.

Blow a whistle for every sub. Then subs know to wait to enter until they hear a sub whistle. Shows a you said, your in charge a substitute entry. Great video discussion

Another great video. I love that it came up, pre-gaming with the table officials. I often do that. I get that it's annoying of me, but it happens too often that table sounds the horn before/during report or sometimes even during live play.

This was yet another very beneficial video session. Substitutions, such a seemingly simple thing, yet one I’ve hardly trained on nor considered the specifics of in such detail. Question: how exactly do players report to the table? Do they just announce to the scorekeeper their color and jersey number? “Blue 31.” Or is there something else to it?

Substitutes simply inform the table they are coming into the game. The table should record their number in the book but the player does not need to "announce" anything, nor do they have to tell them who they are coming in for.
