That is the fact that we are often advised not to mention openly because of social expectations and because we promote equal outcomes for everyone regardless of their abilities. Which is bad for high-tech business aiming for breakthroughs (especially) in STEM fields. I don't understand the reason for your comment about the all-men team for xAI. I think that is a natural outcome of selecting the most talented engineers from a very competitive pool. It has something to do with intelligence, where there is a higher proportion of males among the most intelligent people. You can search for "gender distribution intelligence gaussian curve" on Google Images Search and see the images for yourself. Maybe you will be able to comprehend what the curves imply. Men have a wider IQ range of intelligence than women (from dumbest to smartest), which means men are more likely to be dumber than the dumbest women and more intelligent then the most intelligent women in the same time. However, the average intelligence of men and women is pretty much the same. The key is the intelligence distribution. Once you understand that you will recognize that having all-male top talents is natural and it may just mean that he was after smartest people without looking at the gender. Which I think might be really the case here.
That blows my mind too, but we had similar thing happen to Amazon's Ring series of products, which include doorbells, baby monitors and Alexa and of course everybody got mad that they no longer worked. The lead engineer on TSMC's 5nm and 7nm processes now works at SMIC. He voluntarily left with a team of S. Korean and Taiwanese to join Team China. The ONLY reason why China is not producing 5nm chips at scale is because of export restrictions on machinery and chemicals. It's not due to knowledge of chip design. This is why the US is freaking out.

can someone explain to me why we as a society agree with the current course the west has gone on towards China? I mean it blows my mind that we are actively trying to technologically retard another nation. It already did, on the memory & SSD chips. Most tech reviewers on youtube will tell you like 10 different reasons why M.2 drive has been getting cheaper in the last 2 years or so without mentioning the word "China", but the fact is the tide turned the moment YMTC in China started mass produce their 128 and 232 layer 3d NAND flash chips, the price of m.2 drives has gone down by at least 50% worldwide. Nowadays in China you can get a 2TB 5000MB/s nvme drive for as low as $65 USD. This to me likely means that other suppliers like Micron and Samsung had been sitting on their profiteering monopolistic asses for so damn long. Remember all those "Factory fires" or "Flood" excuses made by Samsung 2 - 3 times a year back then? Never happened in these last 2 years or so.
Yes, breaking the semiconductor equipment, fabrication and design monopolies will lead to significant cost reductions due to increased competition. Not good news for the current monopolists but certainly great news for customers.
If you are into PC building market, you must had noticed that the SSD prices dropped like jumping from the roof in this year, and no more Samsung factories on fire making prices going up, and guess why lol.
It's not just SMIC:s N+1 process, it's also Huawei's own advanced chip packaging/stacking technology which combines two chips into a chiplet package with an equivalent performance of that of a single chip half their node size (e.g. two 14nm chips combined into a 7nm chiplet package). Plus of course Huawei's homegrown EDA software, since Huawei cannot use US EDA software. So, to sum it up, it's Huawei's EDA tools, Huawei's chiplet technology, and SMIC's N+1 process...
7nm is just the start... now China has the ecosystem to build pretty advanced chips despite all the sanctions is a pretty monumental achievement, I think things will only get better from there...
China's victory doesn't seem so limited to me. It's amazing to make so much progress so fast. Yields can be improved over time, so that's probably not final. Also, whatever technology is beyond EUV could be found by China first.

and no single countries in the world had been able to produce 7nm chips on its own without our sourcing key technologies like EUV, including the USA. The closest was the USA with Intel but they stuck at 12nm
@@Fldllse TSMC made 7nm using ASML DUV way back in 2018. When China says 7nm. China actually means TSMCs 7nm. TSMC eventually switched to EUV in making 7nm for efficiency. But the point there is, it is possible to make 7nm using DUV. the process is dubbed Multi-patterning running the waffer multiple times. From what I understand, It takes longer hours & higher labor cost... But cheap skilled labor is something China has in spades. From what I understand intels 12nm is equal to TSMCs 7nm. not sure though From what I understand TSMC 7nm process of using ASML DUV machines is patented. Something that would give pause to Intel, But China SMIC would give little regard. Note that China SMIC has acquired ASML DUV machines & Former TSMC employees. It’s also not as bad to have 50% yields, EUV lithography machines are known for even less yields, and they have to stop production a large portion of the time because of unforeseen issues arising.
Isn't anyone else concerned that a company going under can turn all of their customers' bikes into bricks ? Can you even use it as a regular mecanichal bike afterwards ? It seems like an extreme amount of waste caused by software locking because the company thought they could make a locked ecosystem.

7nm is actually powerful it depends on the chip design you may have 3nm chip but with heating issues due to poor design which better design in 7nm can easily beat . just like SD chips that is prone to overheating, while new gen huawei kirin designs are optimized to full performance without much overheating.
They already had 5G chips. they are literally the leading market in 5G. they just couldnt use it because of the US. but the chips where already in production and being made. same goes for their 6G that Huawei is working on now.
The 2015 28 nm Kirin 930 is about as power efficient as the 2016 14 nm Snapdragon 820 while about 80% as powerful. Huawei was making Apple and Qualcomm eat dust that's why Uncle Sam cut off access to TSMC.

actually highest quality chips dont go to regular consumers, rather for commercial/professional usage. Servers/datacenters/etc get the best quality silicon, remaining low quality silicon is given to consumers in cpus/gpus.
Let me get this straight. The app and internet connection is to set up the backup code for the kickstand, so it can be used offline? What's stopping anybody from stealing the bike by picking it up (yes it could have a tracker on it) but you can just wrap tin foil around the bike. A bike lock is cheaper, doesn't require a subscription, and is always offline.

An app will still break at some point if it's not updated for new iOS or Android versions. The code needs to be open source to actually allow the bikes to survive after the company is gone.
I don't know about iOS, but on android I've seen even old apps work fine even though it will complain about the app being developed for an older version of android, plus given how android releases for the past few years have been mostly iterative without any big under the hood changes, I doubt there'd be much trouble in the future. But then again for a bicycle, I don't know about these fancy e-bicycles with network connectivity but I kept my regular old bicycles for at least 5-10 years, I wouldn't trust a mobile app for that long. Being open source would be nice yeah, especially since they are collecting the bluetooth key which I'd think would be sensitive information.

You never know when rain hits or you drop your phone, etc etc.

Honestly quite interesting to see oneplus sales, I think it got alot of slack for mediocre phones for some time the last couple of years, but the 11 is pretty decent, same with tablet, and their budget tier is still going strong, nice to see after alot of problems for the group as a whole, would be sad if they'd need to go even more mainstream n such to keep alive with restrictions on them
I totally agree..their flagships that people call mediocre are definitely great phones at mid tier prices.most people never gave them a chance to use them and know how great they are especially for the price.. as a 10T user and a former 8t and 7t pro McLaren user im definitely am beyond satisfied.. I refuse to spend over $1,000 for phones that don't even come with a charger in the box and on top of that charge much slower than even some of my older oneplus phones..

FYI, top topics on China's attempts at nodes less than N7, includes photonic, graphene, and quantum chips. Photonic and quantum chips will have production lines online this year. Graphene circuits are being taped up on Chinese eight inch graphene wafers. Further, there has bee media reports of 2-dimensional transistors, 3 atoms thick that can also be stacked and achieve nodes 1nm or less. The yield rate of early production with limited knowledge and experience is and has always been low. The more experience you gather, the better the yield
One thing to note in Huawei and SMIC case is that Well SMIC production capacity is extremely limited due to the fact that they can no longer buy new ASML machines due to sanctions, whatever they are producing with 50% yields are mostly from machines purchased before sanctions and thus cannot increase production capacity, so its more like a short term solution with whatever ASML and other foreign machines they have and having it run as much time as possible (or to buy 2nd hand Asml DUV machines to make it ) But when talking about TSMC or Samsung level of production capacity then its simply not possible until they can figure something out on a new indigenous DUV / EUV machine in mainland china itself ( which TBH is still quite far away as the only working mass producing DUV machine in china is SMEE DUV on 90nm tech , some major works are happening on a 45nm one also so might happen by 2026 or so but under 10nm is still quite far away, work on a 14nm machine has started but its mostly on paper only till now )
You forget that Huawei last year patented their own EUV technology, using a different technique of light sourcing than ASML (so you can no longer say the stole the technology). So I'm pretty sure they're working on an EUV machine with SMIC and SMEE. The thing is China has more engineers than any other country in the world and they have a very strong work ethic. Expecting that they'll take forever to catch up is foolish.
@@xzybit1984 Patenting an EUV and making a actual working model with okish yields is extremely difficult and challenging, for any nations especially for china with near 0 experience in this field, just throwing cash doesn't solve the problem On paper china has a DUV prototype which can make 7nm chips, but those chips have a yield of less than 15% ( extremely miserable and barely usable)even after using lots of foreign components and thus was selved , having a patent doesn't solve the issue and another problem is that the components going in a EUV machine is also Highly specialized like lenses from zeiss Germany or actuators from japan ( China has to solve all issues on how will they not only make a usable euv machine but also how will they create those specialized components aswell ) . So realistically A EUV machine from china with or without barely usable yields is still more than 5 years away (probably even more, EUV machines and its specialized components are no joke its extremely hard to make all those components even if you stole 100% technology)
