Open Wide tells the story of a father and a son fighting to upend the world of orthodontics. In their mind, the world's faces have become severely deformed and must be restored to their beautiful ancestral proportions. Braces, for them, are a major part of the problem: the Mews loudly proclaim that the appliances push faces back and make them unappealing.
John Mew's dental license was revoked a few years ago by the UK General Dental Council. He lives alone in the moated castle that he built, where he pushes his orthotropic movement forward from the desktop computer in his cramped office.
Mike Mew is unequivocally his father's Plan B, and has dedicated his career to proving John right. He turned orthotropics into mewing, which first gained popularity in darker corners of the internet before becoming a full-blown online sensation from Reddit to TikTok. But now the British orthodontic establishment is coming after him too: Mike faces his own imminent General Dental Council trial, and the verdict could determine whether orthotropics lives or dies.

Six years ago, I began mewing. I was well past my 20s. It worked! My jawline became noticeably sharper after several months. When I'm driving a car or working on my laptop, I'm mewing. I trained myself to also mew most nights when I sleep. A side benefit of nasal breathing is that I don't get sick near as often & when I do, it only lasts a day or so.

How I wish these methods were the standard of care when I was a kid. My teeth were crowded and crooked, and my lower jaw under-formed. So when I was about 11 years old the dentist PULLED EIGHT TEETH (maybe it was six, but it was a LOT) and the the orthodontist installed headgear that went around my head to push my upper teeth back. Then I had braces to straighten my teeth too. It was horrible and traumatizing. And now as an adult, my teeth are straight and my bite is good, but my jaw is still very obviously under-developed. A "weak jaw." I have no recourse at this point in my life (57 now), but it has always been something I've been self-conscious of and wished I could change. THANK YOU, Dr. Mew, for speaking out educating people. Thank you for future children who will hopefully have better, less traumatic and more effective care, thanks to you and your family's efforts.

ooof. heard. I'm 41 and didn't have to face headgear, but I did have some very strange and bulky retainers to "repair" my overbite and had to use elastic bands. I was congenitally missing one set of upper molars (and my wisdom teeth, which is nice luck) and they dug down into my jaw to pull the others so my bite would line up. I only have three sets of molars where most other folks have four. I also had six other teeth pulled at the same time. My family has a super dark running joke that if I were ever murdered, identifying me via dental records would be a snap. My folks are still angry at me that I let the gap between my front teeth widen again, but frankly, I like it. :)

It's just so great to see that this knowledge is gaining more attention. As a child, I was unable to breathe well through my nose, so I developed all the growth symptoms the Dr. Mew's describe. Then, as a teenager, received "camouflage" orthodontics, which only temporarily straightened my teeth and in time, made my problems worse. Nobody seemed to know how to truly help me in the 80's and 90's. By diligently self-correcting my mouth posture over the last 6 years, I have made gradual, but noticeable improvements to my lower face. (and I am in my 40's.) I can only imagine how much better my situation would have been as a child, if this were mainstream knowledge. Let's make things better for our future generations! And thank you so much to the Dr's for their tireless efforts to get the wisdom out there!

Really though? Orthotropics have been around for decades. The US calls it “Early Intervention.” So it’s already out there. This show is more than that. It’s a circus act. Because the practitioner featured is a “nut.” He makes for good television. ESPECIALLY when you see that 2 of his kids are obviously not HIS genetic material. This is probably the WORST way that orthotropic intervention could be portrayed. As someone who actually respects Orthotropics, I just hope the practice can dodge the harm caused by this film.

I had a palate splitter for two years as a young teen in the late 70s. Every day I had crank it wider a little bit. The pain was excruciating. Some days I would refuse to do it and my mom would hold me down while my dad did it. My parents both worked 2 jobs to pay the orthodontist bill, and money was so tight my combo Christmas and birthday gift one year was a waterpik so that I could keep the area between the splitter and my actual palate clean of food. All of that and I still considered myself lucky because I didn't have to wear headgear like some of my classmates. I wouldn't wish the pain I went through just to have my smile look like everyone else's on anyone. If this guy is trying to do something different, I support him.

I had the palate widening appliance too and had forgotten all about it until I watched this trailer. It hurt but it didn't give me headaches or black eyes or any of the other issues that I remember being warned about. My lower jaw and teeth naturally set out over my palate and upper teeth so, at the time, it made sense to widen the top so that the bottom could fit underneath. I haven't followed orthodontics at all since my braces came off ages ago and am not familiar with mewing so I'll have to do a deep dive now.

I don’t know. There’s plenty of people who have gotten braces and their face didn’t change. I had a childhood friend who had absolutely FUCKED UP teeth as a kid. I remember every time she smile, even as a kid, me thinking, “Dang, those teeth are messy.” She got braces in 6th grade, all the way until end of freshman year in high school school. That’s 3 or 4 years. Let me tell you, she’s beautiful. Perfect straight teeth, incredible bone structure, big wide smile that shows a lot of teeth (sign of good dental structure). She ended up very attractive, and would often get asked if she was a model in college when she visited bigger cities like LA, NY, Miami, etc. (she’s also 5’10). Braces didn’t mess up her face, and a lot of people have normal looking faces and beautiful teeth/smiles after years of orthodontics.

I can tell you that the principles are solid as I am a highly trained dentist. I went to his training and treated my children and close family with more than excelent results. So, Why the kickback from the orthodontic community? It's because to do it correctly you have to select the parents and patients, thay have to be motivated and this means more time with them and a lot of explaining and longer treatment periods also it is not economically as lucrative as traditional ortho. Plus it means they have to basically have to relearn a big chunk of info they have been taught in school and change the logistics of their practices.

@@ilsedemolder3973 I've discovered mewing alone reinforced my abnormalities. Luckily I'm a massage therapist so I understand muscles and imbalance well. I'm "mewing" but I also am being consistent with various stretches and muscular development exercises. I'm "tongue chewing", changing my sleeping pattern to lay face up, and something that I don't think I've seen anywhere is SMILING! Your face feels when it's imbalanced if you know how to listen to your muscles, so, focus on your smile and making it bright and even. It's literally been a week and my entire left side has lifted and engaged in a way it wasn't before. Learning how to swallow properly was an ENORMOUS step in this process. When I was young I did a lot of theater and acting, something that's helped me is imagining I'm back on stage so what I'm doing with my face matters. I had one of those split retainers as a kid. And like many kids, I lost it somewhere along the way. 🙄 To this day, I WISH so badly that I had held onto that thing. My upper jaw would be so much better as an adult (of course I can't afford to have orthodontia done, even with insurance). Mewing? Hm....the jury's still out.

So gratifying to see this happen. I hope that it gains traction and is seen all over the world. When I discovered orthotropics and Dr. Mew, I told all my friends with kids to look into it. None of them did and nearlly all had braces.

Brock Rondeau has been teaching for years. American ortho. was wait till jaw arches developed THEN move teeth to that size. European and "orthopedics" involved controlling growth before malformed arches/face/bite and then move teeth to stabilize bite. A holistic approach of appearance, function, esthetics, not just teeth. Nasal blockage = mouth breathing = malocclusion

Good! I love how of all the alternative health experts, you gain traction. Even tho the anti-mew movement is so strong. You are able to mobilize the middle of the big crowd, who normally follow the corrupt side of science. Out of vanity they can't resist now, but they see it works, and if they get the ''additional'' health benefits they will be even more happy. Hopefully this is an opening to a more skeptical but also more fair en wider evaluation for the big crowd who otherwise couldn't be bothered.

Orthodontics & having braces has caused so many problems with my teeth, jaw, gum recession, quality of life as a child & adult now, sleep disruption, air way obstruction, mandible that didn’t get to properly expand, teeth crammed in, conference issues - never wanting to smile showing teeth… one of worst things ever done to me. And the excruciating pain when these braces were being tightened - degrading the quality & long term health of the teeth, bottom front teeth are weaker & need more work & money spent on them etc etc etc. so much anger & hatred for this profession & how they ruin the quality for so many peoples lives basically, amount of money time energy spent trying to undo all the unnecessary damage these people do.

His work is wonderful and valuable. I would never take that away from him or the people he’s helped. But let’s be clear. Only one of his kids is actually genetically connected to him. So the appearance of his middle and youngest children have more to do with a genetic connection to a different father than anything he did to them.

My orthodontist put giant metal springs in my mouth to force my jaw forward. I had pretty severe jaw issues for years and during the time they were in my mouth I couldn’t eat normal food and I had two giant bubbles that oozed yellow puss out from the inside of my cheeks. They barely made a difference and my jaw is still uncomfortable 10 years later. They weren’t worried in the slightest about the infection it caused and told me it was normal and it’s what happens to everyone doing it. My dentists saw and was horrified and told us to sue. That guy still has his license.

I have missed a few days when I was ill, but have been consistent otherwise and we'll see. THIS IS GREAT - what a fantastic initiative to get this out to the world - I've been a victim and sufferer of braces both physically with extreme pain daily and aesthetically making me unattractive with how my face grew. I cannot wait for you to prove them all wrong and change the world so no more kids like me have to suffer. They really fucked with my life. Only just now 20 years later, im 36 - am i using a split, had a nasal airway opening surgery, plus extensive daily posture restoration treatment and exercises to finally have days of my life where I'm not in extreme pain. Because they fucked up my teeth and how my head grew.
