A tip I know is when you open your mud boxes. Open the plastic and fold it over the sides of the box. Then pick up the box and bang the side of the box on the top of your bucket to get the mud starting to fall out. Then just dump it into you bucket. No taking the whole bag out and no cutting into the plastic.

I use a 45 degree street elbow on the hopper to angle the gun a little more when shooting ceilings for more comfort for my wrist.

Myself? Well, I like a brocade finish on ceilings. For application, use a 2x2 attached to a 12” square of plywood. Cut up your oldest grouting sponge into 1-2”pieces and staple them to the plywood. Dip that in a tray of mud and have at it. Once it partially sets, run a long trowel over it in a few directions. Or spray heavy texture, then trowel over it.

Open the box. Open the bag. Take top of bag taught and cover outside of box with it. All this while mud is still in bag, in box. Flip over onto top of five gallon bucket and you’re welcome. All mud unwraps itself from the bag and one single plop

You should research Graco tex-boost pressure hopper you will see much easier to texture. It's a small hopper like the one your using, it's air pushed in hopper look it up. You will be like the Sander where you been all my life

Its about cost. Its cheaper to texture than make everything smooth and flat. Here orange peel is pretty common, one less step than knock down. Commercial jobs often see smooth wall.

@@brentiers Orange peel on walls easily helps hide nail holes. Had a rental apartment that had OP walls - hideous. But when l left all I had to do was dab some spackle over the holes & go. In fact, I suspect the only thing holding the building up was decades of renter spackle dabs.

Most folks go for the orange peel- myself I like a banana peel texture that way you can hold your hopper sideways and use your mouth to blow the air instead of lugging that danged ol air compressor onto the job site. Now, granted the banana peel had its hay-day back in the Byzantine era, but it’s still a classic and doesn’t always read like the homeowner is dirt poor (which he more’un likely is iffen he’s hirin’ me!). Nice work, Handy Man.

leave the bag in the box, fold the sides over the top; like putting a trash bag in a garbage can. Then just dump it in the bucket, 99% will slide out.

It's actually not a low income middle class thing lol I have done maintenance in many million dollar homes that have textured walls 😂. In Montreal they more then likely use plaster. 👍

You would have a ton of fun with the Harbor Freight hopper I've been using! I don't spray texture often so I haven't upgraded yet, but man. That thing has ZERO air control. Once the hose is hooked up, it's blowing!

I got one too. Before buying it i watched videos and read reviews. Got a ball valve on the air intake. Just shut it off when not spraying let the tank build up. Run the compressor at about 50psi. You can also use the valve to control the PSI to the gun too for fine tuning the air flow.

Over here in Ohio most of the ceilings are textured there's three or four different ways to texture ceiling , think Orange Peel looks the best, textured ceilings give a nice contrast some are overdone though like Stomp

Bought a house with crows foot texture ON EVERYTHING. I lay in bed just glaring at it wishing I just ripped it all down prior to moving in. Now I’m thinking about doing 1 room at a time drywall demo and replace. I think a small hopper would work for me.

I’ve used a spare 5 gallon bucket to hold the hopper standing up when refilling or taking a break.. just a thought. Good job though!

Old bucket with a 2"cut all the way down the side so I don't have to disconnect for filling. $10 in parts from HF to regulate air pressure, dry the air and cutoff flow.

I wonder if you used a cheater valve (cheetah valve?) on the bottom of that Kobaltit might make it a bit better? For the cost of the unit you'd think they'd make something that's useful. I'm in the desert southwest. It gets so foggy when I use a hopper for texture I can't see what I'm doing. I put some red chalk line powder in the mix. No problems, much better job!

East Coast here and we don’t do texture. Nor do we have joint compound in boxes. Why does your joint compound look brown? Is it an off white color or is it the camera that makes it look that way. Ours is white and drys white.

Marshalltown bought Wal-Board middle of last year. They just raised the price of the Texture Pro 200 hopper gun 37% ($87-119!), 8 months after they bought out Wal-Board. Wal-Board had just raised the price 25% just 6 months earlier (from $70 to 87). So, in total, a 70% increase in 14 months. At that price, no way. For a third of the price, the HFT and AMZ options will do just as well. Marshalltown's business model has been to buy higher end U.S. companies, then jack up their pricing to justify over-pricing their own stuff.

Curious, why not use an elbow on the hopper so it stays upright with your gun facing the ceiling. You wouldn't have to shake so much when you are getting low in the hopper. Just saying :):) I do this all the time and love watching your channel. Thanks !!!!

Using powdered usg "texture" will give you the professional results that you need. Using all-purpose joint compound will not spray the same pattern because it doesn't have the same consistency and thinning it will never make it the same same thing with trying to use topping compound I've seen that so many times over so many years and you can tell when you look at the texture from a professionally textured house with a texture truck. The texture pattern that sprayed is a professional looking spray pattern when you use the powdered texture mix water. It's especially true with knockdown you will not get the same knockdown pattern match if you're fumbling between not understanding using all purpose joint compound this texture versus using texture that is specifically made as texture.

I adjust the presser at the hopper it has a dial on the side. I think the tank pressure was around 80 to 100. As your tank goes down you have to increase the pressure at the hopper.

I hate texture on walls, I understand why they do it, so they don't have to do that level 5 finish. I especially hate when it's so damn thick you need a 3/4" nap just to paint the damn walls. I don't think I've ever lived in a place that didn't have some amount of texture.... sadly.

Is drywall texture a regional thing? I’m in HVAC so I have been in thousands of homes over the course of my career and I never see it. I’m sure it’s good for hiding imperfections but I would personally prefer to pay the extra money to have a nice smooth finish on my walls and ceilings.

@@TheHandyman1 Mainly west of the Mississippi - in the mid-Atlantic and New England many homes have old-fashioned lathe+plaster. The drywall homes in the same areas follow suit and go smooth. I never even _heard_ of textured drywall until I moved to Arizona.

The fact alone that texture is an extra step makes it extraneous in my view. Installing and taping+mudding must be done with care, but after that it's prime+paint. Done. Of course my perspective is that plywood - or literally any other wall covering - is fewer steps than drywall. I'd rather have corrugated tin in a full remodel but I personally hate drywall. I'll see myself out ...
