A group of orcas cruised around a jet ski off Kaikoura Peninsula, northeast of New Zealand’s South Island.
David Lyons, who runs a surf school in Kaikoura, captured the beautiful show put on by the killer whales. Lyons said the playful animals were “totally surrounding us and playing with the wake and bubbles, freely swimming underneath and beside us and slapping their flukes with excitement.”

Under circumstances like this, has any scientist determined what a tail slap means? Is it a gentle warning for us to be aware/keep clear, or is it a nod to his pod that those pesky humans are around again. I’d love to know. By far my favourite creature of the sea. I love them so much.
@HitominekoFantasy
@HitominekoFantasy Год назад
Yes yes! So while orca clans have different body languages with different gestures, tails slapping is very common. It’s usually almost always the matriarch who does it and it appears to be a signal to the other whales to pay attention to her and listen to what she’s saying or signaling for them to do. Kinda like a teacher clapping to get the classes attention. In this video right here I believe it’s likely she’s trying to tell the little whale nearest to the jet to back off a little bit. Many people think it’s an indication that the whale is mad or frustrated but It is not an aggressive signal towards the humans.

They can communicate through language, if the Orca in charge felt the jetski as a threat you wouldn't see them this close. Very cool experience.
@j.e1806
@j.e1806 8 месяцев назад
I don't think we have to over think this. I believe the whales chose to interact with and swim alongside them because the wanted to. And the tail slap was likely a greeting. I don't believe orcas go around tail slapping at each other to communicate when they are all alone.. And if they didn't want anything to do with you they will just swim away or you won't even see them

And it seems like they come out of no wear to save the lives of humans in harm's way... This is without a doubt my all time favorite animal on the planet. That being said I'd be scared on a jet ski. I'd feel like a bath toy. The tails are super strong. And that jet ski only ways so much. I wouldn't feel so scared on a boat.... Depending on the size of the boat. But the jet ski or a canoe... I'm not so sure. I've seen humpbacks playing where a calf was doing this to its mother. She was lifting it up with her nose and it was getting in front and slapping its tail like this. However I've also had humpbacks slapping their pectoral fins and that looks like, stay away or I will swat you like a fly.

She’s telling her pod to keep a distance, clearly knows what a jet ski is and doesn’t want harm to either party involved, especially the younger more curious juveniles in her pod.
