This isn't new. I thought the story was going to be about thieves taking people's carts after they got outside. Snatching purses from shopping carts when people aren't looking started being a problem about 30 years ago. They told women to never leave their purse unattended and always keep an eye on it. This isn't a new problem. This is an old problem getting brought up again.
This happened to me in the 1980s in Houston. They lifted my wallet out of my bag that had an open top. To this day I am angry that I lost some favorite irreplaceable photos, including the best driver's license photo I ever had!
A previous coworker had her purse stolen years ago while grocery shopping. She had her purse in the front of her cart and a man approached her asking if she knew where a particular item was and as she gave him her attention, someone took her purse. She noticed it missing after he walked away. The distraction tactic is what these thieves use. She had money and credit cards in her purse and in a very short time, her cards were used. It took her two years to get her identity straightened out. The thieves were part of a ring out of West Virginia. I have approached many women over the years while shopping and pointed out to them the danger of leaving their purses unattended and share this situation as an example. Be vigilant so you can be safer.
I recently thought I was doing a "good deed" when I (politely) reminded a lady about her OPENED "Gucci" purse in the seat of a buggy as she was approximately 10 feet away looking at Produce. She threw me "attitude". Hopefully she'll come across your post.
@@jgilc2691 Yep same thing with me. I have learned to mind my own business. My bag is a crossbody and it's zipped shut and in front of me. Hopefully the thief picks an easier target.
@chillwill5080 Buying that amount should have thrown up; if not one red flag...many red flags on their system. Especially if the purchase was with one cashier or even several. And if done in one day. Hmmmmmm.......my former employee's system had limits set on their system. And for one reason. Gift card fraud is extremely high. Especially with the inside, dishonest employee fraud and of course; the other dishonest ones who slither in thru the doors like a hithen. Sorry you went thru that. I know its stressful for us honest ones.
Not even the bank card is necessary anymore. Just the phone, that's all you need. Unless you don't have a smartphone at all, like my mother. But she lives in a safe country in a safe little city.
Just another warning , i had 2 workers in my home , 2 different crews , people i've known for 2 yrs steal out my home . First one , about 20 yrs old , i treated him like a son . Anytime he needed for kids or wife , i helped him . He went into my bedroom , stole an envelope with 1300 cash . I honestly wanted to cry , i was really hurt . He lied & lied , i kept telling him i didn't want to go to cops , he kept denying it . He never thought i would turn him in , the sheriff gave him 5 days to return my money or go to jail . He gave my money back , then begged to come back to work for me 😮 . I live in a small town , i have ADT security, 3 pow pows , dead bolts , wooden shutters that locks from inside . Alllll , of that never matters , when you unknowingly open your door to the thief. 😢 # stay safe
Back in the 1980s I offered to have my cousin in the navy visit me for the weekend---he was 22 and I was 37. He asked it he could bring two friends with him all three were stationed in the Bay area; I lived in SOCA---absolutely, bring your pals! They arrived Friday and for the next three days I paid for everything--saloon tabs, meals, full menu of food at home, beer stocked frig. On the following Wed. the company I worked for called me as my phone card was compromised and numerous calls were being placed around the world. I instantly knew "one of Jon's friends, heard me giving the card number to the operator calling my customers on that Friday pm as I worked in my office. When he got back to base he either sold the # many times or gave it to the barracks trying to be the big man. I treated him like family and his friendly demeanor was a mask of a freaking thief which I invited into my home. Pathetic but I learned a lesson.
@@mikejohn0088 Years ago we let a man down on his luck stay with us for a couple of weeks. He was a childhood friend of my husband, and they had kept in touch over the years. One night he disappeared with our car. We never saw him again. Police were no help, but later we spotted our car on the police auction site.
Test your ADT. As a Realtor in a small town, 4000 people and a police department, I have never seen ADT help anyone. A siren may go off but that is it. No police show up at all.
*Whaaaaat?* I was taught to protect my property when I was but 8 years old. Sixty years later, I STILL see people leave their purses, often OPEN, in their carts. It’s not like they deserve to get robbed, but geez, people! As they say, “common sense isn’t common!”
It should be a no brainer to keep it on you at all times. Also a shame women's pockets are also still small af, like who tf is going to notice unless the pants are inside out?
When I was a kid my mom and I went shopping with the neighbor and her purse was stolen from the cart just like what happened here. The purse contained the rent money and she was inconsolable. This was back in the mid 1960s when I was about 4 or 5 years old but it was a huge lesson for me. My purse is like an appendage to my body and I’m always aware of where it is on my body. I love handbags but if I’m shopping and need to have my hands available I’ll wear a cross body with the purse in front of me. This was a crime of opportunity, it’s not new.
How awful! I am the same. My purse is on my body, in front, not side, arms or arm covering it at all times! Hey if it's that important to you, do not leave anywhere. Keep it on your body!
What I find odd at my local is there are signs telling us that there are cameras operating for our, 'safety'. Never believed it then, not going to start now.
I am always telling women not to put purses in the cart. If they must, they need to buckle it in like it's a kid, and never turn their back away from a cart with a purse in it. Years ago my aunt was visiting from Pa. at grocery store and left purse in the cart while pursuing the meat case. Thieves picked it out of the cart and ran off with her purse and all in it. She couldn't fly home because her ID was in the purse that they took. She had to stay till her Drivers license could be gotten by her family in Pa. and mailed to Florida because you can't fly without ID.Thank goodness the plane ticket was at the house. Best to wear purses on cross body in front of you at all times. Evil abounds.
And keep it on your person when you are loading your car. Theses scumbags can run up and grab your purse while you have your back turned. My step daughter just had this happen at the bank. Someone said “oh you dropped some money on the ground”, when she turned to look, someone grabbed her purse from the front seat. She lost it all including her key fob for the truck! There are some real losers out there who just don’t want to work! 🤬
@@Rob_the_Bilder No. It is possible to have a job and still not be able to pay rent and have enough food. Or sometimes you have a job and you're in the middle of looking for a 2nd job to help get by. Dire emergencies can exist even for people that work. It's rare--but it does happen.
@@abesapien9930 There is nothing but excuses for theft, and there shouldn't be any. There are plenty of resources and help for people who struggle and are truly looking for assistance. Including things like renter protection laws to help with things like paying rent. Condemn the actions not the person and hold them accountable. You can't be above the law because you are below on income.
This only happens in liberal democrat areas so its really up to voters to decide what laws they want inforced and what laws they dont want inforced. Where i live we do not allow theft of any amount. Does your area allow theft ? Does your area invite drug addicts homesless and illegal immigrants? My area does not invite any of that sort of activity or lifestyle. We have almost no crime here. People live safely in peace here. We do not vote to put criminals above all else. Liberal voters are mentally chsllenged and vote for complete insanity. How do you vote ?
@@valerieroberts8241 yes cali was the place to be up until a couple decades ago. Then it took a hard left. Now you can steal you can shit and shoot up in the streets. Yet the voters dont understand why everything is going wrong. Its sad and amusing at the same time.
I’m the most suspicious person on the planet. When I see women leave their purse in the cart, I cringe. I would never, ever, ever leave my purse in the cart. When I get gas, I take my purse out the car and lock my doors. I’m extreme with my level of awareness.
When I'm at the gas station, I lock all the doors using the key instead of the auto-lock function on the key fob. That way, when I get back into the car and open the driver's side door with the key, only THAT door unlocks, and the other doors remain locked. That way nobody can jump into the car as I'm getting in. I also immediately lock the driver's side door as I'm getting in, before I even close it.
Same with women always putting their cellphones in their back pocket of their jeans/pants (And if it falls out, it could break also) or even in the shopping cart... And now thinking about it, don't give valuables to your little children, thieves don't care if your a little child or not, just total disrespect for life smh...
I am constantly amazed at how many women I see at the grocery store who will walk 15 to 30 feet away from their cart while their purse is lying right there for anyone to grab!! Over the years I have observed women seem easily distracted when they shop, and appear to lose any sense of "situational awareness" but WHY would anyone walk that far away from their wallet or purse assuming it will be ok? Keep your valuables CLOSE!!!
Klaus Schwab said the world will be much "angrier". He knows because his co-conspirators are engineering it. That is why they are bringing up "redlining" which they created. They will do to your neighborhoods what they did to your schools.
It is all by design by the evil rulers of this world . They own everything including the police , politicians and CEOs. of CORPs.The owners of stores have been told to stand down and let it happen. They want all the theft to happen because their is an evil agenda behind it. I think that agenda is to get rid of all stores and I mean all of them. It says in the HOLY BIBLE , that lawlessness shall abound in the End Times.
Over the past several years the way I shop has changed considerably for this very reason. Keep in mind while most people may be in the store shopping for groceries/supplies, there is a least one person in there shopping for an easy target. A few changes in your behavior can go a long way towards discouraging someone from targeting you.
I am not offended by what you said and I don't feel sorry for this lady at all, it was just plain stupid of her to leave her purse in the cart unattended. Just because it is a nice store, doesn't mean that bad people aren't in there looking for an opportunity.
they cant stop the ebt skimming millions stolen leaving people no cash and food money in one each month on videos i was skimmed in ny and it was used somewhere
I actually remember when I was pretty young still a teenager maybe, or early 20s and I was downtown and I left my bag in the booth for a second to go grab a napkin, and this older gentleman came up to me and told me - sweetheart don’t ever leave your bag unattended like that again, someone will steal it. I saw you left it in the booth when you got up. After that I tend to guard my bag but he was a nice man to warn a naive girl in a larger city.
@@rogerrosen2323 it’s a busy city with a reasonably high crime rate. I’m older now, I can see how dumb I was back then - anyone can easily snitch your purse doesn’t matter about being in a restaurant.
On a similar note , don't leave purse or electronics on passenger seat . Theives will break your window in a second & take everything. Especially, at the gas station. I had to break a lot of my common practices, that were just " second nature ." # stay safe # stay vigilante
ANOTHER PT TO FOLLOW IS: The minute you get into your car the first thing you do is lock the doors even before you start it. Car jacking is a very dangerous possibility if you allow yourself to be unaware.
Common sense should tell you DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON YOUR PURSE IN A SHOPPING CART! Also, don't leave it unzipped! I always put my zipped up purse over my shoulder and hang on to it when I need to bag veggies, look at meat, etc. I've been doing that since I was old enough to shop on my own, which has been a long time. This is nothing new.
Some people have thievery hard wired into their DNA. I knew a guy once that had to steal something everyday; it was like heroin to him. I assume he's dead as sooner or later the prizes had to appreciate in value and he eventually stole from the wrong guy.
As a former lady cop, I always tell my friends to never leave anything in your car you cannot afford to lose. Although not new, purse snatching is on the rise. In my last car that actually had trunk, I installed a small safe to store my bag while out exercising. Well, that isn't sufficient anymore, you have to take it with you, and use a cross strap to keep it close! Sad. You may want to put credit cards, ID and your phone in a small neck bag like those for foreign travel. You can carry it on the inside or outside of your clothing, or better yet, buy a specialty travel bag that you can put everything under your jacket. Leave the good stuff at home under lock and key!
Someone was kind enough to warn me about leaving my bag in the cart while shopping and I took it seriously. I always wear a waist pack or wristlet when I shop now.😊 This woman has my deepest sympathies for this lesson learned.
This is why Americans should be able to carry firearms! If the government won’t protect citizens from criminals, it’s time to take matters into your own hands!
electronic thieves are taking over vs the poor and their govt cash aand food benefits id skimmed and cards cloned now have to watch terminals and change pins next mnth this month i a have 0 left getting worse and no recourse in most cases
i was in vegas 10 years ago and made the mistake of placing my laptop on the ground in a plastic bag security says it wasnt stealing since it wasnt by force in the srat hotel my fault for not putting in room or holding it
Listening to the reporter and the other news people, it sounds like they're telling the people of California that crime is a normal way of life and to get used to it
Things getting outta hand; no pun intended! Can’t trust anyone these days!! We’re letting criminals get away with shoplifting; nothing is being enforced so crimes like these will continue to happen
I always physically hook my bag to the cart, plus I keep an eagle eye on it. When I turn my head, my hand touches my bag. It's sad how lousy the world is.
Why do you guys even put your purse on the shopping cart even if you hook or lock it? Apparently, stores in the US have no security guards and people get into trouble or get fired if you face on the thieves.
Its not like that where i live. We do not elect leaders that cater to criminals homeless drug adficts or illegal immigrants. Do the leaders in your area put criminals drug addicts homeless and illegals before taxpaying citizens? It they do then thats your problem. And it could be solved in one election. But liberal voters will only vote for liberal politicians so you shouldnt expect anything in your area to change. Ever !
In Seattle I was pickpocketed by a store self-checkout clerk walking past me and she took my phone and the security guards got ticked off and yelled at me when I suggested they check the cameras after I suggested just because someone got a job don't mean they're not broke enough to do that. Anyway, I found out later by another employee there that there'd been a LOT of cell phone thefts at that particular store over the span of a week.
"Getting answers...."? This is nothing new; however, it was expected to escalate. There will be an increasing uptick in shopping cart jackings, along with follow-home jackings. You news people are behind the curve or are sheltered. I wish you well in your shopping excursions.
Happened to me as well!! At that exact location. I also have footage of that person in Best Buy using my credit card and holding my wallet in her hand.. that was minutes after she stole my wallet and was already in Best Buy across the road buying stuff. Unfortunately no authority or managers didn't do much with the info i had to somehow pursue this person. They will keep doing it again and again because no one is doing anything to stop them.
I love Trader Joe's! And I knew they would pay for her groceries because they're just good that way! But I do not go in any stores with any bag or purse! I do the old school way like my grandmother did and put everything in my bosom and carry my key fob in my shirt pocket and that's it! I stopped carrying a purse in stores long before covid even happen because I am a big Observer and people in parking lots just hanging around loitering is uncomfortable for me so the least that I have to carry the better!🤬 this story makes me angry! You can't even feel safe going into the grocery store!
The problem is that the thieves will start ripping purses off of women themselves. It happens here with elderly women. I tell them not to carry purses because they can be hurt or killed as the purse won't come off easily. NEVER wrap your purse strap around a shoulder and a neck. The purse can be replaced, your neck cannot.
The presumed vulnerability of seniors is why I will always continue to color my hair. It's not out of vanity, it's for protection. It's so that, at least from behind anyway, I appear to be younger and more likely to fight back.
When I lived in Hawaii back in the 1990's, the locals would go to Waikiki and target the young Japanese tourist (they knew they carried a lot of money) and would grab their should bags while driving down the street and just drag those poor little gals until the purses broke free. There are so many cruel people in the world that their only job is to steal from others.
" ignored"🤣🤣🤣🤣Look up the stats on crime in this country. The law and/or cops can't save you from your own stupidity. White family sitting in a pizza parlor while leaving thousands of dollars worth of stuff on the seat in FULL VIEW, I was leaving as they came back in screaming that somebody broke their new truck window and took all their things. A young, white teen was caught a few days after, thanks to cam video. Lesson learned, you have to help yourself not to become a victim. This has been going on for decades. "Politicians"🤣🤣What politician do you think can stop this? Believe it or not, Capitalism thrives because you need the haves vs the have nots. It's not just the have nots out here stealing, it's the haves as well.
I wear a sling bag with just the bare minimum inside it. Gives me hands free shopping and my bag is always on my person. If you carry a big heavy bag you are more than likely to set it down. I also don’t carry a designer bag in the USA it makes you a more likely target. Nice bag =$.
When i go shopping, i wear jeans, I put the necessary items in my pockets, hook my keys to a belt loop and never take my phone into the store. I leave purse at home. I know I can still be robbed but I refuse to make it easy for them.
They'll watch for women exiting a vehicle without a purse also. Every woman I know carries a purse. If you don't carry a purse you'll come back tobroken windows and missing purse.
It's nice to have nice things. You shouldn't have to hide your nice things or not use them because of crime. Personally, although I can afford really nice things I live a much simpler life and use some of the extra money I have to help the homeless and downtrodden in my community. But then I'm weird. I believe humanity is more important than pretty toys.
@@kitsiewr Stupid people see and post stupid things. I was offering up an alternative use of funds that actual can help others and society rather than walking around with a bunch of glittershit just to proclaim to the world how special they are by being wealthy. 😱
when I see a purse perched up on the front part of a shopping cart, it's like having my wallet sitting there for anybody to take it. Never understood why women think that's what it's for.
I never take my purse to a store anymore. I carry a small wallet in my jeans front pocket. I wear long tops to cover my pockets. It's terrible to have to dress for safety in the market, but something like this, happened to me.
Also, if shopping in a city, bring a friend, keep your cross body handbags, to the inside of yourselves, one walking on left, hang your purse down the right side. Friend walking on inside of sidewalk, hang purse down left, so your purses are sandwiched between the 2 of U, with no room for pick pocket, between. & wear a denim shirt over purse, or jacket/coat over purse in Winter, to hide it.
It’s called a snatch and dash, if I’m not mistaken. Why wouldn’t they, if they know they won’t be prosecuted? We need to prosecute, then educate when in jail.
What’s sad is that people in Cali act like this is a normal way to live. California is not the California I was raised in. Thank God I got out 25 years ago. I go back to visit family and it’s like being on a different planet.

Just what the general public needs, hotshots shooting in stores under the delusion that they are making the world safer for all. A gun was not warranted here, but you knew this...
Why do you guys even put your purse on the shopping cart even if you hook or lock it? Apparently, stores in the US have no security guards and people get into trouble or get fired if you face on the thieves.
So the store closes , people lose their jobs while the politicians get their fat cheques and do nothing .The country is rife with lawlessness getting worse each day . Or maybe the plan is to shop on line only and deliver your food with an armed Brinks truck .
I did see employees mob a thief in Walmart once. But I live in a small, rural, very conservative Arizona town. In Ca the employees would be arrested for frightening the thief, who would be given candy and an apology. Something has to give.
@@cybervigilante I don't understand why proven criminals have so much rights there than victims. Especially the murderers. Like is evil the new good? It's dangerous since other countries heavily influenced by the US seem to be following.
This is not something new. Organized crime ring? Give me a break! I worry someone will steal my empty bags from the cart. I know it shouldn’t be this way but it is.
I feel bad her bag was stolen... However, being a New Yorker, never leave your bag in the cart. Never leave your bag unattended. With the rising crime here in New York too, I try to carry the minimum with me.
Also my mom is elderly and she finally decided to stop wearing her wedding rings. She said when she's out she doesn't want someone pushing her down and stealing them off her finger. They are a beautiful set from 55 years ago.
I live in a rather peaceful community but when ever I see a woman with her purse unattended, I always try to get her to pick up her purse and hang on to it in a way to discourage a thief.
Ok first of all the reporter said “ it may be unrealistic to not bring a purse!” Ummm… not true! You can tuck your wallet or card in your pocket, bra or whatever! Also, I’ve been saying for YEARS that when you walk around carrying a $3000+ designer bag that has a very recognizable logo, you’re inviting theft! They no longer care about what’s IN the bag, they want the bag itself! They can easily sell it! Nobody NEEDS a designer bag to go shopping! Be smart ladies! You’d never walk around in public with $6000 cash in your hand, but that’s basically what you’re doing when you carry a Chanel, Fendi, Gucci, Louis Vuitton etc. Especially if you’re leaving a boutique carrying a shopping bag with the name on it! You have a big black paper bag shopping bag with big white letters that says Chanel! You may as well write on the bag…” Hey thieves! I’ve got $10,000 in this bag!” 😳 I’ve been warning RU-vidrs for years too! If you have a successful channel where you un-box designer bags, you’re showing the thieves how much they can make if they rob you! Especially if they recognize you from RU-vid. They sit around waiting on the street or parking lot for you to get back to your car. They then follow you home and rob you of every bag you own! It’s happened to so many people! The flex just isn’t worth it! If you get robbed it’s your fault for flaunting! Furthermore, the woman from the Target robbery had her bag in the child seat area of a shopping cart! Thieves look for that! Then while you’re busy reaching for something on a shelf, they swoop by and grab your bag from the cart! That LV bag she had is a crossbody. She could’ve just kept it on her body and that wouldn’t have happened! Let’s use our brains people! Geez! 🤯 Stop bragging and leave your expensive bags at home!
Reluctantly I have stopped using my designer bags just because of this sort of thing. I don't want to get hit over the head for a Louis Vuitton! I do still wear my wedding ring but turn it over so the diamond doesn't show when I'm in certain places.
A girl I dated just had her ID and her debit or credit card in her wallet. She was the first woman I met that didn’t have a purse. She said it was so she didn’t lose it.
This has always been an issue! You need to be aware of your surroundings and your items at all times. Very sweet of the manager to pay for the groceries.
Probably best not to put your purse in the cart. Anyone can grab in when you’re getting an item from the shelf or just run up and grab it out of your cart
I wear a crossbody purse when shopping but I often see shopping carts with purses in the front of them while the owner of it is distracted and maybe even a few steps away. I always want to tell the owner that she shouldn't do that but I've only done that once.
If you take a designer bag out grocery shopping, you are broadcasting wealth. Wise up! I’m sorry this crap happens but you’ve got to think like a criminal to outsmart a criminal. Use your front pockets and carry minimal.
It shouldn't matter what you have, it's doesn't give you the right to take it. They take from people that don't carry a designer bag. You should be able to wear and carry what you want. I had mine strapped on me and they tried it, but when you play silly games you definitely win a prize. In other words they fucked around and found out. And went to jail. I have NO pity on idiots!!
Criminals don't care. Nobody is gonna stop them from walking right in. Criminals can still rob people coming out of stores as well. None of this is going to slow down unless there are harsh punishments.
@@raiderc9471 Yes like Costco. You have to show your Membership card at the fenced in parking lot entrance to Keep all the riff raff out. And potential Members have to pass a credit check and criminal screening. People want a safe shopping experience.
Our situation was a little different. Mum left her handbag in the pews while going for her communion in a catholic church. When we returned, her bag was missing. Someone attempted to use her debit card but failed. She had to go through the hassle of canceling her cards and getting a new ID. No where is safe now.
This is happening at the Trader Joe's in Orange County too! I've had employees tell me to watch my bag as they've had so many thefts lately. I wonder if it's because they don't have cameras.
Not me stopping to tell a young lady in Walmart to pick up her phone and purse out of the basket. She looked at me like crazy and told me to mind my own business. I told her in the minute she was turned looking at the item in the cooler anyone could have grabbed her things and ran off. Sure enough not 15 minutes later it happened. She tried to say I was involved. Fortunately a store employee was near by when I tried to warn and overheard the conversation. Them me trying to help her call her bank and all the credit card companies.
Word to the wise. Never flaunt your wealth. Leave your Rolex watches, fancy jewelry, and high-end purses at home. Otherwise, you're putting a target on your back. Don't leave your purse in your shopping cart. Have it on you at all times. The crooks often work in teams of 2 - 3, with one of them distracting you, while the other grabs what they wanted. If there's a 3rd team member, your property is handed off to him/her to make tracking more difficult.
Consequence of privilege. She lives in some fantasy world. I grew up on foodstamps dirt poor and mom always taught me to watch my stuff no matter where you are
I have had women yell at me if I pointed out how easy it would be to steal their wallet from their open purse in the cart behind them. These are the same arrogant people who leave the car running when they go to the ATM. Don't be dumb!
I see women with their purses open in their carts all the time. I always use an over the shoulder messenger bag I keep in front of me at all times. I refuse to be a victim. I also use rfid sleeves for my credit and debit cards too.
Prevention is key! Cameras can only do so much. And they don't capture all activities in the store. Keep your purse on you. But keep your wallet and cellphone in your pocket.
Your shopping cart is. It your personal property. In theory it’s worse than leaving it in your locked parked car…. Your handbag needs to be on your person
I agree, it was just dumb on this ladies part and she is all shocked about it. Duh, don't leave your purse out in the open unattended, right? There will always be a victim because there will always be someone like this lady out there.
I sorry this happened to her. I never put my purse in a shopping cart. So many purses have been stolen that way. Thank God for the store, for blessing her with free groceries that day. Sad. Lord Jesus Christ have mercy.
