This is so good, I've watched it 3 times! You really are one of the clearest most articulate teachers on the internet, as smart or smarter (probably, I think) than Vervaeke or Pageau, but so much CLEARER. Thank you for all you do!!!

Thanks for watching. We will be getting into the era of the church councils later. But I hadn't thought of doing episodes specifically focused on the councils as opposed to the individuals who were at the councils or whom the councils focused on. That's a good idea.

24:20 It's also the term used for Genus in Neo-Platonism, John also used logos, so the use to indicate the only only of a unique (divine-human:) genus is entirely plausible. The aforementioned Porphyry uses the same word in his text on Genus and Species in Aristotle's Categories. I could well mean something akin to sui generis.

Just finished, podcast version. I left Sam lots of thoughts. Hank keep working on your non-tritheism articulation of the Trinity. ;) thanks, guys. Great stuff. Main thing that I’ll leave on the youtubes is this: Sam, I don’t think that your ending conception of Fr Behr’s interpretation of Origen’s Incarnation is heretical. Eternity as nontemporal “time”, and Jesus being the center of that future/telos reality pulling the beginning to the end (which are really just the same in the eternal-time sense…it’s not a big deal. :) Thanks, again.

Origen on Jesus sounds a bit like what I've heard of Adam Kadmon in Kabbalah... Which also draws on neoplatonism. Where do you find the line between these apparently interconnected thought streams.

It was mentioned how the sun and the moon have souls, is it similar to the body/spirit/complex or a collective? Does Origen mention other stars/ planets that have souls like Saturn, mars, Venus?
@transfigured3673
@transfigured3673 11 месяцев назад
Yes Origen believed that all the heavenly bodies were ensouled. There was also a hierarchy with some of them being more divine than others.

28:22 I would question whether the songs you refer to actually have the ransom paid to the devil, which was Origen's error. Ransom is a Scriptural word/concept. It is therefore a legitimate metaphor to be used, but must be understood correctly. The devil was not owed anything for our redemption (another word related to ransom). The ransom/redemption was accomplished by Christ making the necessary satisfaction to God to deliver us from the just sentence of death (captivity). Before St Anselm, Sts Gregory of Nazianzus and John of Damascus rejected the idea of ransom being paid to the devil which was held by Origen and Gregory of Nyssa.
@anselman3156
@anselman3156 2 года назад
p.s. I think the Word of Faith heretics emphasize the devil's legal rights over man and teach Christ's being delivered over to the devil to be punished in hell-a blasphemous heresy.

You do a wonderful job of taking such abstract concepts and making them easier to understand. Kudos! After considering what a lot of BU’s have to say about this idea of “eternal generation” I have to say that I think I agree with them. It’s dangerously close to being an oxymoron since a son, by definition, has to exist at a point in time after his father. Otherwise, you’re truly dealing with two brothers, right? Sure, God might exist outside of time, but I’d posit that for a being to exist outside of time necessitates that they forfeit the claim of sonship- it’s just not possible without contradiction at least in my tiny mind.
@transfigured3673
@transfigured3673 2 года назад
I agree. I can understand how two things can be contemporaneous while one of them depends on the other, light like from a lightbulb, but it seems to stretch that idea too far to talk about two persons existing in that way.

27:14 Two examples of where modernist RC theology has gone seriously awry. Urs von Balthassar's declared intention was to invent a "new Catholicism", ie a departure from the tradition.

1:27:52 I have read that one of Origen's speculative ideas was that creation is eternal, as without it God would have been inactive and not omnipotent. This would seem to be akin to pantheism, affirming the eternal existence of all things in some form. I think it significant that you referred earlier to sophiology, as that is a resurgence of theosophical notions drawn from occult gnostic and kabbalistic mythologies. Modern adherents of these ideas might be looking to appropriate some of Origen's heretical speculations, but, as you rightly point out, he affirmed that the Logos, the Son, is Himself the hypostatic Wisdom of God (as St Paul tells us. God is Himself Wisdom, but the Logos is the Hypostatic Wisdom of God as manifesting God's attributes in creation and salvation (as stated in Pomazansky's Orthodox Dogmatic Theology). It is important to note the occult origin of sophiology which is gaining a certain currency among some modernist Orthodox, although deemed heretical by others. Sophiologists don't hide their affinity to kabbalism and theosophy. Sophiology is effectively the idolatrous creation of a hypostatic "divine feminine" as some mediator between God and the world, and I have observed sophiologists affirming that human beings are essentially divine. There is a whole hotbed of heresy in the tendency, which has its representatives in Paul Vanderklay's "estuary". As for your query about Paul's "God number 1 and number 2", I guess Paul would give the response that both are aspects of the Holy Trinity as a unity, inseparable operations being the doctrinal term for the involvement of all three Persons in creation and salvation.

Hopefully I'll cover this more next episode, but my short answer is that Origen understands eternity to not be endless time, but to be timeless. So when Origen says there wasn't a time when God was without creation he is making the point that time is created, therefore there is no moment before God created time. I think he was often misunderstood on that point.
@transfigured3673
@transfigured3673 2 года назад
Regarding "sophiology" Origen is insistent, to the point of beating a dead horse, that logos and sophia are one in the same and both are the eternal Son of God.
