Orleans was a small town that was settled in 1885 by Reverend Young as a farming and citrus community in Citrus County in the 1800's. There was a railroad station nearby. The population in 1887 was 60 and in 1895, it was 100. The town was probably wiped out during the freeze of 1895 which destroyed many crops. Influenza was also an issue during those days and may have also contributed. There isn't much left of the town today but the cemetery is a nice reminder of the past here. Today the area is part of Withlacoochee State Forest and Citrus Wildlife Management Area.

Very serene and peaceful place I plan to go and explore when I get a chance.. in my opinion, that well, cistern or whatever it was used for should be covered up. The barrier built around it looks kinda flimsy and would easily be knocked down by an amateur 4 wheeler, or anyone for that matter not to mention the countless animals I'm sure have fallen to their deaths down that hole.. who would you contact to remedy that? I just get a really entire feeling when I look at it..

Good vid dude,I wish I had time to visit and hike these cool places. Been up near that way before, while riding around Croom and Croom -a-Coochie. Have you ever heard of a ghost town called Millard? It's in Polk, not too far from Branchborough, between Kathleen and SR 54,off the railroad. It was in the vicinity of Stokes and Clay Center, two other ghost towns located in now what is known as the Alston Tract. Millard itself is only accessible through the Ranch Bonito "subdivision" (aka land scam),the area where people go to drive their recreational vehicles.

John Gavin thank you for watching! It’s interesting I learned of Millard awhile back and someone had told me they explored some but they also mentioned it was private I really never tried to get back there. I always see off road tricks in that area when I pass by.

John Gavin what do you know about the other ghost towns?

I have been back there a couple of times. I have old maps showing exact location. And there was a schoolhouse nearby called Briar Berry. My 3rd cousin told me our family once owned land out that way. The area itself changed hands between Hillsborough and Pasco and then finally Polk had it in the early 1900s I believe. Millard and the other two ghost towns were most likely based on forestry and turpentine, like alot of ghost towns out that way.I know I seen an article somewhere that there was a police raid in the 1920s in Clay Center, they found illegal alcohol equipment. I just got a subscription to Newspapers.com. I will see what I can dig up. Would love to have the time to do what you do,stay safe out there man,and thanks for replying.
