Wet the leather, the steam with a high air assist helps to clear the kerf. I have cut 10oz (4mm) leather in 4-5 passes.

@@dfalekulo9138 moisten the cowhide, the steam created by the laser burning the leather combined with your aftermarket air assist should blow away burnt debris. The original commenter was able to cut 4mm thick leather in 4 or 5 passes.

Thanks for doing this video, Did you ever get to try with the higher watt laser? REALLY looking forward to it.

Hello I am new to this. Curious what are the biggest differences between 15w and 20w can the 20w just do a little more then the 15w with no cons aside from price? How bad is the smell when doing tile or plywoods? Can I do it in a small room in an apartment with one window and a fan blowing the smell out?

Can I please ask which air pump you use? Thanks in advance.

I've been using my 20 watt ortur with the standard lens at 100% at 350mm/s with 3-4 paths. treating your leather with danish oil before you cut it helps a ton. cranking up the air compressor as high as it can go is helpful

Are you cutting 3mm leather?

@@DIY3DTECHcom 2.5 when I measured with calipers. I’m pretty sure I could get the extra .5 with another pass or two. I think it’s the danish oil treatment that darkens the leather that helps. I can’t get it to cut without it.

Could you try cutting leather mounted in a stretcher frame? Some surface tension could allow the kerf to open up slightly as its cut allowing the air assist to clear it better and so cut deeper at a given power? (Presuming the leather isn't already pre-stretched to its maximum.) This might also be useful with other material that have some elastic properties. Of course it to cut through too much of the surface area it might just snap through the uncut material.
@DIY3DTECHcom
@DIY3DTECHcom 3 года назад
I think that is a good idea however I do not have a stretcher to try. The other thing is I have play around with a G2 lens and finding better luck albeit with a little more angle on the kerf...

Just remember those that think "oh im gonna cut all my leather patterns out like this!" You will never bring the edge back to a nice soft edge regardless of how much you condition it. One of the first things I do, as a leatherworker myself, when go to ren fests and see a vendor at a con selling leather is feel their edge.. A laser cut edge will ALWAYS feel stiff and harsher on your skin than a knife cut edge as the heat created binds the fibers and fuses many of them together. Its a great option for doing inlays and filigree work, but PLEASE if the edge contacts skin, cut the design out with a knife and finish your edge with a proper burnish.. It takes longer but your customers will thank you when they arent gettting sores from rough edges rubbing thru layers of skin. Faster does not mean better in the world of leather..

Or you could sand it briefly and still finish it "properly".. let's be honest with ourselves though... The RenFaire guys are vultures haha they don't care enough to be bothered... SALES SALES SALES! 1st. Quality 5th. 😂🤷

Would a vacuum assist work better for something like leather?
@DIY3DTECHcom
@DIY3DTECHcom 3 года назад
If your referring to clearing the ash, not really the positive for forces of the air is greater then the suction. Part of the issue is leather (like MDF) is fibrous so the ash doesn't evacuate cleanly.

I cut leather with my k40 now. But I did some cutting with my ortur LM2 in 2mm black leather. My settings are mm/min, but it took my 20watt 100mm/min, 100% power almost 60 passes with the focus set at halfway through. It did better with the smooth side down. Slower and it started warping my leather! Ill try focusing g on the bottom next time. Another thing to note is the Ortur diode does not create a pinpoint, it creates a line with a brighter dot in the center. At least using my standard lens; the g8 does not fit the new laser head properly. That said, the ortur laser will cut along one axis better than the other. For me, it cuts in Y better than X.
@DIY3DTECHcom
@DIY3DTECHcom 3 года назад
The bar is a bit of an illusion (sort of) as there is fast and slow edge to the diode which forms the "bar" shape. Use Teflon tape on the G8 lens to snug it up, however try a G2 lens for the leather...

I have etched and cut leather on my laser. It's only a 4.5W blue laser and I usually only use 2mm leather. For cutting, I've found more passes at a higher rate to be more successful. Going slower seems to just burn material and increase ash in the curf which eventually turns into an impenetrable insulator. Air assist is critical for these cuts. I've also found that dying some veg tanned leathers can make a huge difference in how they cut. Even when it does cut all the way through, I sand off the edge and finish it with a burnisher. The raw laser cut edge is stiff and doesn't look great. Being able to lay out a pattern with the laser, etch designs into it, and then finishing it by hand makes for some nice finished products. Awesome video btw. I'd like to see more of this! A quick word of caution: make sure you have good ventilation when cutting leather. It can really stinks but depending on the type of tanning and finish, it can release nasty VOCs.

Many thanks for the comment! For ventilation I have sealed system and even with that the stink did get out a bit so I can not image doing in the open air! Have you tried G2 lens as I am find more luck with that then the G8...

I cut 1.5mm leather better with 3 element lens than with the G8 :D same focus distance 36mm to leather top with "15w" ortur...no air assist and thin masking tape over...300mm/min 92.5% power 1 pass

1.5mm is half this so yes I could see that, try a G2 as I am finding better luck with that, however there is a little more angle in kerf...
