Back in the 1980's I went to the #1 Nursing program at a major University. Nutrition was an Elective for doctors, It was a requirement for nurses and pharmacy students. We had only 3 M.D. students in our class. It has not changed much since then. My last doctor argued with me because he said there was no such thing as vitamin K2 when I told him I was taking it with my Vit. D3. Imagine how many of his patients get a massive dose of Vit. D3 when they test deficient but are not told about K2 or the danger of taking Calcium daily (probably CA carbonate).
May I ask what brand of d3 and k2? My doctor told me start taking 2000IU of d3 and 1000mg of calcium. Upon watching this video I’m afraid of taking calcium.
I love my doctor... I now have osteopenia. He told me to get a weighted vest, walk more, and do weight baring exercises. Never promotes a drug, always lifestyle changes, which have all worked so far for me!
You can be very fit from cycling and similar sports where there's little to no load bearing and have osteopenia. Cycling, in particular, is prone to it because any body weight, except in the legs is assumed to slow you down. Racing cyclists crash a lot and which makes monitoring bone density doubly important. Even worse for women cyclists. A good example of professional sports people not being fit in an holistic sense.
@@cuebj you are so right! I was a runner for many years. Then I got older with the usual runners injuries and surgeries. Then when Covid hit, or really before I started to cycle to work. Not weight baring. Then being a white, Irish woman the crap hit the fan! Keep up the good fight. It’s all we can do! ❤️
My cardiologist always warned me to stay away from to much vitamins especially calcium. He told me he had more patients that were sick because excessive vitamin intake than any other condition related to the heart. This last visit he gave me vitamin D every 48 hours Vitamin K and vitamin C and told me to rest one week of not taking any vitamins. When I saw your video I clicked on it right away and I was so happy to hear you say exactly the same thing my cardiologist just told me!!! Love all your videos! Thank you for teaching us so many things about our body 🙏🏻
At menopause I was diagnosed with osteoporosis after 3 months in a cast for leg fracture. Was prescribed lots of calcium supplementation. I refused Fosamax. Then 2 years after I had an emergency visit to hospital with very painful kidney stones. Then I decided to join fitness club and never had kidney stone or fracture ever since. Now 78 years young. Thanks dr Berg.

@Hughes SignCo Yup. Same for my Mum. The Dr said she needed to take calcium tablets. Ruined her kidneys. She put a lot of trust in her Dr. I prefer the herbal/food route.
I am a Nurse practitioner and Dr. Berg is amazing, I follow his advice all the time because I know he has done his research because I do my own as well.
My doctor had a fit because she said u have osteoporosis and obviously I was not taking the calcium she ordered. I was taking that. That was 20 years ago. I am 74 and so far no bone issues. I walk 5 miles a day and use to run.
My mom got osteoarthrtis and the only her doctor recommended were omega 3 and vitamin C (prescribed based on the lifestyle and age). Change diet, eat a lot of vegetables and fuits, drink a lot of water, walking around, doing gardening (her hobby) and one year later she joined marathon.
Western medicine Drs are not trained in nutrition. That's why there are nutritionists, dietitians and naturopaths. Find a great naturopath and a health food store run by a nutritionist who can offer free advice
@Yuri R. Calcium deficiency is very rare in America, UK and Europe. 95% of people have too much calcium and inadequate magnesium, throwing off the balance needed to build bone.
I mentioned this to my cardiologist and he said calcium supplements don’t build up in the cardiac arteries. However, years before I had a cardiologist, my primary physician sent me for a cardiac calcium score...and I was worse than 75% of women my age. Years before that, I was told by my physician to take calcium supplements. I developed osteoporosis anyway.
Great advice. A few years ago my doctor told me to take calcium along with vitamin D. I was always skeptical about the calcium and never took it. I eat red meats moderately and try to eat healthy. Thanks so much for keeping us informed and why we shouldn’t take calcium. Blessings and be safe.
I am just going into menopause this year (I'm 50yo). So my GP told me to "make sure" I take a calcium supplement. After watching Dr. Berg's videos I ditched the calcium supplement and started taking vit D, K2 and magnesium. (I eat dairy a fair bit anyway). I also have an exercise physiologist who strength trains me twice a week. I can't believe it that even a trained medical doctor has no clue how to treat osteoporosis effectively in this day and age.
At a certain age, living in the city, I believed all the crap we were told about how we must wear sunscreen, even with no sunshine in Melbourne and take calcium supplements as a female to avoid brittle bones etc. I ended up with serious Vitamin D deficiency and all sorts of nasty foot bones problems, which I thought were caused by years of ballet dancing, but they weren't. I stopped the calcium supplements and sunscreen, stopped wearing spongy gym shoes and doing standard gym for a year, just walked around for miles in the sun and did some balletic stretches instead of gym and drank tons of water. My feet I thought had been permanently damaged mysteriously repaired themselves after I stopped the calcium supplente and got rid of gym shoes.
@@cindymyrick7335 Coconut oil is not a sunscreen. Some literally apply oil to tan even more, this will damage your skin even more and cause skin aging.
I've been taking 500 mg of calcium plus D for my osteoporosis as suggested by my PC for the past 10 years. Need to have a talk with her regarding what I've just seen. Thank you Dr. For this video.
The heart foundation needs to make more doctors aware of this vitally important information. I think the link to, and the importance of, "gut health" should also not be under-estimated.
If only doctors do what they are supposed to do unfortunately that's not the case the majority of the time nowadays. Dr Berg we are blessed with your information. May it bring a wave of enlightenment for people's awareness of looking after themselves and a wake up call for the sincere doctors out there
Most Dr's want to keep you a frequent customer for life. They don't want to fix you because then you won't need them. They treat your symptoms and ignore the root causes.
The medical community has lost their credibility from covid and many things before it. Making it normal to inject you or have you digest poisons, routinely removing things that are meant to help you like your tonsils, appendix and gallbladder. The only interest 90% of doctors are to get paid. They don't even uphold their oath to do no harm
most docs nowadays just want our co-pays. (the irony is, one of the vessels in florida a very nice yacht has a name COPAY, can you believe it?) if not for lockdown/covid i'll be visiting them 6X a year (because of my cancer history). in our visit to them, they want us to pay first before they can press their stethoscopes on us. if for some reasons we can't show up on our appointment, we have to cancel it within 24 hours prior otherwise they'll going to bill us just the same. i was complaining about my throat and they (2 docs to be exact) prescribed meds for my tummy. they really don't want their patients to get better.
doctor and dentists still need to learn but don't let the dentists drill make the teeth get hole to get money and in 10 year later a lot of people get damage teeth , all the dentists in Vietnam do that to all people, and may dentists kill all people teeth and doctors also do, and that country isn't good for travel too , do not travel to that place

In 1991 I was diagnosed with early osteoporosis. In 1996 I stopped all dairy products. In 2004 the osteoporosis was no longer evident in the x-rays. I still don't drink milk or most dairy products and have little evidence of arthritis or osteoporosis. I eat plenty of vegetables and some meat, hardly any takeaways and no artificial sweeteners or palm fat. My blood pressure is a bit on the high side but blood sugar is low to normal. No cholestrol issues. My general health improved radically when I gave up dairy products.
My doctor and I got into a “discussion” over why I wouldn’t take a calcium prescription. She insisted, I said absolutely not. At every visit, they bring it up. The answer is still no.

Just got diagnosed with Osteopenia and am so thankful for Dr. Berg. I knew what the Orthopedic doctor was telling me about taking tons of Calcium was not going to make things any better.
Dr Berg, I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis at 44. It runs in my family. I have already had skin cancer surgery and see a derma annually to burn and biopsy other spots. I take Vit D pills, but my Derma advises strongly to wear sunskin. What else can I do since I cant get natural vit D?
In the case of your grandma it's a bit more complicated: Too much calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia) is almost always a result of an enlarged parathyroid gland (there are four in your neck). It's non-cancerous. But removing that enlarged gland almost always results in a cure. Here's the problem: no-one knows why that parathyroid gland became enlarged and overactive. It would obviously be better to understand what is really going on, but in the meantime hypercalcemia can be live-threatening, so the gland is removed. Maybe one day we'll understand more fully.
I almost died from kidney stones from taking calcium daily. I became septic and critical within minutes. It took 2 years for me to recover my strength. Not worth it. I'm a kale fan bigtime. Great videos! Thanks so much!
@@fever3583 Eating Kale (among other cruciferous vegetables) *raw* for a long enough period of time will significantly reduce your thyroid function. It's *common knowledge* amongst nutritionists and nutrition enthusiasts. Kale is very high in oxalate (spinach is the worst), so that could explain @Jane Pedersen 's kidney stones. (The theory though is that if you love high oxalate foods, that you eat those with foods very high in calcium. Don't eat them separately. That way the oxalate crystals will bind with calcium and exit through the feces rather than the oxalate crystals making it into your blood (of which your kidneys filter). On the other hand, Eastern Asian medicine claims (and for good reason) that oxalate in moderation are good for health, as they help to remove excess minerals from the body via the urine. And in fact, your liver makes its own oxalate crystals from l-glycine when needed.)
Water is the most important thing to be careful with. I'm 75. We had an artesian well with pure mineral water 99% so I know the difference. What I now do is use CPAP bottled water and for minerals drink Fiji water. Beware of fluoride. First used in Aushwitz to keep people DOCILE.

I have to take this prescription for 10 years. My infusion will stop in a year. I also take a Vit D3 too. Never took Vit. K or was told to take it. I eat good healthy dark greens. I use to be a competitive swimmer, rode my bike weekly and hiked a lot. Since BC, my ability to move has almost stopped. I see my oncologist next month in August. Time to go clean and go back to my 20 year old life style. Forget all these video doctors and my in person doctors. Time to just live!
Dr. Darren Schmidt has an interesting take on this subject as well. He blames "lactic acidosis", whereby the blood, being highly acidic due to excess sugar metabolism, triggers calcium loss in order to balance the body's PH, calcium being alkaline. He observes that many elderly people have serious bone loss, yet have high levels of calcium in their soft tissues, resulting in deteriorated postures with stiff joints and muscles. Answer; lay off the sugar. This simple acton on our part is a cure for countless ailments.
I'm happy I stumbled across this video. By the time I was 50 I had 6 bulging disc 14 vertebrae crumbling and I asked the question why. I also have been allergic to milk since birth and with these issues I had my suspicion of why my bones in my back were bad. They did the bone density test I have Osto Pena. Great video! Although what you forgot to mention is that osteoporosis is due to silica depletion. You see, silica is required for the bones to mineralize such as calcium. Osteoporosis is simply a loss of collagen of the bones due to lack of silica and vitamin C, both of them restores collagen and elastin. Silica is a piezoelectric material that generates electricity under pressure. When the collagen matrix is stressed, which applies pressure on the silica molecules, an electrical current is generated that electrodeposits minerals in to the collagen matrix. This allows bone to gain density. As a component of collagen and elastin, silica also aids in giving bone its flexibility, and therefore much of bone's strength and shock absorption. Without silica, the bones would be unable to mineralize, and even if the bone could mineralize it would easily fracture like a piece of chalk. Silica aids in the absorption of calcium, and displaces the heavy metal lead, which is detrimental to bone. Although calcium is better known as an important nutrient for bones, silica is actually the most important nutrient for proper bone health and strength. Decreased silica levels leads to poor bone mineral deposition in bones, and loss of flexibility and shock absorption, increasing the risk of fracture. So best I recommend would be either butcher's broom herb, bamboo stalks or diatomaceous earth food grade (DE), for DE you add a fullspoon in gallon container filled with water and let it sit there for 3 to 5 days to settle, this is because silica converts to organic silica form called orthosilicic acid which gets very absorbed in the body. The same thing how silica gets converted to orthosilicic acid by our stomach acid. You simply drink the water without disturbing the DE since that water has trace amount of orthosilicic acid. That is how you do it.
@@iwantthetruthandnothingbut6521 You are most welcome! Yes a lot of people don't know about silica or silica hasn't been mentioned so much these days unfortunately.
@@caramelobear1952 You are most welcome! Silica is the number 1 most important nutrient to fix issues like osteoporosis or even premature aging skin, osteoarthritis, especially COPD, many doctors claims that COPD cannot be cured, but if people understand the deepest part of physiology is that COPD is a breakdown of both collagen and elastin of the alveoli, so how do you restore these 2? Silica and vitamin C. That is how you do it.
When I had my hip fracture (aged 49), I was told then I had osteoporosis. They put me on calcium carbonate which I took for a while until I read up about it. I then bought my own non-carbonate calcium. However, having had a femur fracture since then I have twice been given an infusion for my bones. it's only recently that I found out it was calcium carbonate. I feel so mad that they didn't tell me this, leading me to believe it was a superior form of calcium.

I started taking calcium carbonate and after a few weeks it hurt when I peed. I immediately stopped. A friend of mine ended up with kidney stones and her doctor had her stop. I stick to eating leafy greens and impact exercises.
No vitamin C amounts can increase tendency to kidney stones!!! Actually calcium carbonate it's the safest kind of calcium. It gets absorbed less than the other types. It mostly will come out in the poop. So don't take too much, resulting in constipation, Maybe.
@@lloydbishun6713 Not according to personal experience. Theory doesn’t always work in real life unfortunately. Calcium is best absorbed from food like leafy greens. Maybe it depends on the person’s own kidney function and water intake.

Dr. Berg is the greatest. He's always been way ahead of the curve when it comes to health and fitness. Nevertheless, Dr Berg left out some important points. It really is more about exercise and here is why. There was a famous study that was done. They measured the bone density in professional baseball pitcher's arms and found that the pitching arm had three times the bone density as the non-pitching arm. This tells you two things. One, the importance of exercise for bone density and two, the importance of bone density in relation to the part of the body that you exercise. Another significant piece of information that Dr Berg left out is telling you what calcium carbonate really is. Calcium carbonate is limestone. Limestone is what is added to sand to make sand harden and turn sand into cement. Now you understand why calcium carbonate causes kidney stones, heart attacks, and strokes. It's literally hardening the inside of your body. The last significant point is that it's not about getting too much calcium. It's all about the type of calcium you consume. You can get all the calcium you want from green plants and other natural sources of calcium and it's not going to cause kidney stones, heart attacks, or strokes. And now you know the rest of the story!
Thanks!! Unfortunately docs wont take the extra 3-5mins to explain this to patients. Seriously!! The $$ dictates their practice. Im cynical having worked in medical field > 40 Years with Numerous doctors. The good 1s Few. VERY sad!!
i find it hard to believe that drinking unfortified milk alone could cause hypercalcilemia. It's a combination of milk and calcium supplements, not just milk alone.

I know it's been over a year, but I wanted to mention that (if you didn't find this out already) it's about "elemental" magnesium and calcium that's available in the supplement. So magnesium citrate doesn't have the same percentage of elemental magnesium as magnesium oxide, magnesium glycinate, etc. If you google "aafp Therapeutic Uses of Magnesium" and select the first search result, Table 2 shows the elemental magnesium percentages from magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate, for example. And if you google "mayoclinic healthy-lifestyle nutrition-and-healthy-eating in-depth calcium-supplements achieving the right balance" then, under the heading Types of calcium supplements is a "table" of elemental levels of calcium in four different calcium supplements. I believe the optimal ratio for calcium-phosphorus-magnesium is 2:2:1. (It's important to consider phosphorus too, when talking about bone health. And other minerals like manganese, zinc, and copper . . . in addition to vitamins like K2 as mentioned in the video.)
not enough said about actual "load " bearing weight / resistance training / diet / sleep life style that demands actual consistent and progressive HARD WORK to remind the body to keep bones stronger for the needed support for the load bearing "life" you must lead. even "Silver Sneakers" has you moving but . . . NO. You most likely never challenge yourself . . You may also preserve muscle mass and strength. When looking at the multiple components of what can constitute a diagnosis for "Frailty' and sarcopenia, and you should, you'll turn off the computer, tell Alexa to shut up and then get to work. Modern life makes things way too easy- and complacent, saggy-baggy, fluffy-flabby not so golden oldies are waddling around everywhere
