We've been trying to figure out what wifi and 5G setup to have in our new campervan and when GL.iNet reached out and asked if we wanted to test their new Spitz AX 5G router, we jumped at the chance.
Best of all, it's the BEST 5G Wifi Router we've tested, and cheaper too!
We do speed testing, mounting, discussing why it's GREAT for vanlife etc, come and take a look.
The kit we have tested here is:
GL.iNet Spitz AX (GL-X3000) Router (Amazon) - link.gl-inet.com/CampervanTim...
GL.iNet Store - link.gl-inet.com/CampervanTim...
Poynting Mimo-3-15 V2 Antenna (Shark Fin), White -amzn.to/48W7ASM (note, the 17 model includes a GPS antenna and the Spitz AX doesn't have a GPS input, so no need to buy that model of antenna)
iPhone 13 Pro on EE network
1p Mobile Network (EE network) - www.1pmobile.com/index?friend...
(if you buy via this link you get £5 free and so do we!)
Keep a look out for our other new videos coming to the channel soon and a BIG thank you to all of our wonderful subscribers - we have been blown away by how many of you are now following what we are doing. We can’t wait to share more content with you.
Take care, sit back and grab yourself some Campervan Time !

Decided to watch this video again after chatting with you guys at Camper Jam. I know this is a sponsored video so I thought I would give a little real world feedback 👍🏼 We were camped with you guys in club camping at Camper Jam (total black spot for Internet) we used the factory fitted 4G router in our Grand Cali. It was showing 4-5 bars of signal but no internet? However you guys did have internet 😱 after chatting with lots of other people I think you guys were the only ones that actually had working internet! So huge credit to this WiFi set up 👍🏼

Yes no idea how to be honest but it obviously had managed to pick up a cell tower somewhere that usually wouldn’t have covered the site. We were lucky i think !

@@CampervanTime I have done a bit of research on this, I think it’s down to the 5G 👍🏼 Apparently 4G can only cope with a maximum of 4000 devices per square kilometre but 5G up to 1M 😳 So I think the 5G combined with a good rooftop antenna is what made the difference 🤓 It’s not often you will find yourself in this situation except for at a festival but definitely a consideration when choosing a router 👍🏼

Excellent video. I have the same rooftop antenna on my campervan in the U.S. I was so glad to see that it works well for you with the Spitz. I am now thinking of upgrading to the Spitz. Do you know if this router will allow Port Forwarding? I ask becasue I plan to do some traveling outside the country and am wondering about this option.

Interesting and lots of questions about wifi in vans on the Cali forum. Like your last video on this showed the reality of all this tech is its margins gains over just using your phone. 99/100 a phone in tether mode meets your requirements. For the 1/100 you likely don’t have any signal anyway and an antena on the van won’t change that vs just putting your phone up in the pop top. 68mb down is more than good enough for most if not all people.
@CampervanTime
@CampervanTime 3 месяца назад
Yes agree it is marginal gains, but for us we have further use cases - like having the van connected with wifi when we are not in it so we can remotely monitor battery levels, interior temperatures etc (via the victron cerbo GX). Also, because of the decent wifi antennas in the roof shark fin, it means we can piggyback off public access wifi sometimes where there is no signal and your phone wouldn't be able to reach it - bottom of a pub carpark, for example. We've already had pub stopovers where we had no signal, pub has free wifi and we had nothing on our phones (direct off our phones), so used the router to connect to and repeat the pub wifi to us in the van. Just provides more tools in the toolbox for getting a connection.

Geeky question😊 can this router be configured in ‘bridge mode’ or ‘IP pass through’ so it can be Ethernet connected to a home DSL/Cable router to act as a failover modem like some Zyxel outdoor 5G routers can? Reason I ask is I can’t see it anywhere in their online docs or other YT videos & it would be handy if I could bring it in the house to connect without having to reconfigure all my LAN NW 😅
@CampervanTime
@CampervanTime 3 месяца назад
Good question, will need to check on that. What I know it can do is take multiple interfaces (so for example WAN via an wired RJ45 and then Cellular) and then prioritise them or aggregate them and then present them to the LAN via wired RJ45 and/or built in WiFi.
@RichardsWorld
@RichardsWorld 23 дня назад
It has a bridge mode option. You can go to their website and check out their user manual. I usually use my laptop plugged in to it plugged in the LAN.

@@CampervanTime yeah I hear you on starlink, £85 a month but just for the months you use. So trying to work out sim costs etc. (plus roaming in france for example )
@CampervanTime
@CampervanTime 3 месяца назад
Depends how much data you want and how much roaming. 1pmobile is pretty decent at £20/month for 200gb inc some roaming allowance. Three/smarty also have some options for unlimited data which are a bit cheaper but less roaming allowance. We also wanted a connection that is always on in the van, as we remote monitor the battery state of charge, van temperature, solar generation etc. Plus it gives us options to put security cams in if we wanted later on. Starlink would be more problematic for us doing that as the 'while driving' version is even more expensive.
@lincolndave1966able
@lincolndave1966able 3 месяца назад
I am beginning to think starlink roam would be the best solution for us. We like to be remote and our van set up means we have full off grid capability, we run out of water before food and power, and only then do we need to move temporarily to refill. We go to lots of places in the UK where there just is no signal (and contary to network service providers coverage charts, that is alot of places both rural and urban!) , so nothing like the item reviewed will circumnavigate the issue of often none existent or extremely weak network coverage. Also for an item like this to preform optimally, two sim cards are often required, each with their associated monthly fee, terms and conditions of usage ect. Against this, starlinks superfast performance (most of the time) anywhere at £85pm isn't a massive cost differential between the two set-ups, for a massively better service (in our view). Obviously each users requirements will be different and I am sure a set up like yours will be an excellent soloution for many many people, as would hot spotting off their mobile phone most of the time.

@CampervanTime
@CampervanTime 3 месяца назад
Yes you can, but obviously the 4G/5G signal won't be as good, unless you have a pop top van where you can let it see the sky a bit better (through the canvas) rather than just a metal roof.

@@CampervanTimewould be worth doing a comparison I think. I’ve found with my Huawei router that I don’t need a roof mounted antenna as the internal ones work fine. The bladed antenna attached to Spitz probably work pretty well I would imagine.

I think that should be fine. Streaming TV can use quite a bit of data depending on what streaming quality it is so probably better to be safer with a larger allowance.

As well as what Stephen has said, we have found that having our new van without a pop top (ie a big metal box) it means that our phone signals are particularly poor inside the van due to the faraday cage effect. This sorts that out for us. We are currently camping at the New Forest CAMC site and there is very poor 4G/5G here, our phones don't get anything but the van is clinging on and providing us with a connection.

Watch pretty much every video you post this one was a little bit technical for me so was the first one I skipped. Really looking forward to more Sven specific videos which I hope you're posting soon!? I've read some of the comments below and I do appreciate it's a minefield with product placements and you should benefit from the work you put into this channel. One thing that really makes your channel stand out to me is your integrity and candour of reviews. I really hope the product placement videos are not too frequent and when you do review them you're as candid as always. I cannot stand vloggers who fawn over rubbish they've been paid to plug to their loyal viewers. The minute you start pushing crap like Hellofresh or those dreadful power drinks I'll be unsubscribing !!!!!

Thanks and yes, sorry, this is a bit of a tech fest video! Yes MUCH more Sven content coming. We want to share our initial thoughts on how it is, the differences we're finding between a big and small van, a 'room tour' type vlog too. Lots to come. We do try really hard to only do collaborations with companies and products where we think there will be genuine interest in them and we do try to be as honest as we can - by testing and then re-testing the stuff we see. Thanks for watching our channel :)

If ever there was an example of a ‘biased’ vlog this is it. No real tech detail and no serious comparisons against the rutx-50. For what it’s worth I have one of these but I bought it after looking at the specifications and I didn’t need the extensive personalised set ups of the rutx-50. Sadly another RU-vidr succumbs to the lure of the coin.

Well actually no - we had an RUTX-50 before that we tested with this antenna that we bought ourselves, against a small Mifi unit, and also a puck-2 antenna. We still run this setup in our van today and it's absolutely brilliant and I'd recommend it to anyone if their needs fit what it can do.

I have seen no correlation between items given, items on loan and items purchased and the enthusiasm for the product. If anything the products they buy that are already the result of extensive research usually rank the best. No doubt because they were the ones they chose rather than ones they were somewhat randomly sent. Of course if you don’t trust their reviews don’t watch the channel. However as they are mostly factual reviews it is hard to see how they could be biased. I do trust them and so will continue to benefit from their hard work.

Correct, we don't use it (and we weren't paid to review it) because in our new van there isn't anywhere to project it on to which would be comfortable to us to sit and watch it. I still maintain that if you want a projector that has 4 corner picture adjustment for the best price (when compared to an Anker etc) then the one reviewed is the one. We select very carefully what products we review and we turn down LOTS of offers of products being sent to us to look at. We're sorry if they don't interest you but thank you for being interested in our little channel.

The 5G will not be an issue as the aerial is outside. The WiFi will ramp its power according to distance and so will be low on the phone and router. The worst dose situations occur when the phone is in a weak WiFi or 5G zone when the phone will ramp its power to max and is the closest thing to you.
