*If you haven't seen our reactions to the individual episodes, check out our last two reaction videos of Under the Banner of Heaven!*
We have officially watched the entire season of Under the Banner of Heaven and have MANY thoughts about the last few episodes 😬 The Hulu series 'Under the Banner of Heaven' is based on a book written by Jon Krakauer. The series depicts the story of the Lafferty murders and focuses heavily on their faith as once members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Both the writer of the book and the director of the series (and those involved with the show) are not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon Church).

As a non-Mormon it was completely clear to me that the Lafferty’s were not representative of the mainstream LDS church but an extreme off shoot. Also I’m totally clear that the LDS and FLDS are not the same. 😊 So I guess I’m just saying I didn’t walk away with any judgments on LDS. Enjoyed hearing your take.

Concerning the theory lightly touched upon here about Brigham Young and Porter Rockwell conspiring to kill Joseph Smith, there are two big holes with that theory: Brigham was in New England serving a mission and Porter Rockwell was not literate (and therefore could not read the letter that Taylor references from the TV show).

All this was, was an ex-member fan fiction. They purposely based it off the book because if they hadn't they could have been sued of defamation. Brenda's sister interview made it clear that was not remotely what her sister was like but agree, those who are having doubts shouldn't be attack or insulted, but have their concerns addressed and then in the end its their choice if they stay or not.

I was a very active adult member in the church from the late 70s to almost 1990. I found the portrayal of church culture so accurate that it gave me flashbacks. I served as a Gospel Doctrine teacher at the high point of my church membership. Admittedly, exposition is a bit compressed, rushed, and awkward in a limited series, whereas I had years to build up my impressions, but I was definitely impressed! Talking down to women, demanding compliance from them without necessarily providing much explanation? Check. Church leadership intervening in what should be purely legal/criminal matters to safeguard the church's reputation in society? Check. The threat of loss of family ties if the appearance of compliance isn't maintained? Check. Of course, there were some details sacrificed. The bishop would've interviewed the young daughters alone, a questionable practice (in the Community of Christ church, anyone who works with youth gets both specific training and a background check). One thing the series got very, very right is that reading "anti-Mormon" material is almost never the first or the only step that leads someone out of the church. Mistreatment by leadership, inconsistent teachings, and exploitative demands (tithing, callings) are often what gets to a disaffected member long before they read a book like the one that was featured in the series. Since the time of the series, ward culture has changed a lot: there's been a big cutback in activities and amenities for rank-and-file members and an uptick in demands (cleaning the ward chapel used to be a paid job). There's greater acceptance of women having careers and spacing their families than there was. And the temple ceremonies have been changed after 1990 from what was shown, which was accurate for its time. I knew that a bunch of youngsters would be scoffing at the portrayal and that the leadership would take comfort in their skepticism. I guess you had to be there - and I was.

I search up the old ceremonies for research. I am glad they've changed. What was needed in the past for instruction is no longer necessary. I love continuing revelation, even it is just for a process.

I loved the range of "mormons" portrayed in this show. You have Brenda's family portrayed as much more liberal for its time. Detective Pyre doing his best to be the priesthood leader he thinks he should be. Pyres wife, utterly distressed at the thought of her husband leaving and Pyre wrestling with trying to live or pretend despite no longer believing. The loving ward members who help bring Pyres mom home when she's lost and throw his daughter a bday party. The ward family that treats Pyre different after he starts doubting. And then the extremests, the Lafferty family. All of these kinds of families exist as "mormons' and I don't think it would be fair to have a show like this with out including the full range.

This may seem like a weird suggestion, but really just find someone at the meeting that you can sit with. That might be strange if you don't know anyone, but just find someone you think looks fun and say, "hey, I'm investigating the church. Can I sit with you and ask questions?" You could also ask someone sitting on the stand for some help. I guarantee if someone asked me to sit with me, I'd be more than happy to have them there.

Enjoyed the reaction. I think one thing you guys have to keep in mind about Jebs character is that yes it’s a show..but it’s his was that he 80s and not 2022 and so I’m sure the family dynamic and how people respond to crisis was different. Not to mention the age of the internet and or lack thereof for people in the 80s..but more importantly this was not a character who just woke up and started doubting..this was someone who witness the gruesome murder of a mother and child. Imagine if you saw a babies head cut off..as horrible as it is to even write that..that’s something that would shake you to your core. So I did realize all the Hollywood stuff added to the story but at the same time..anyone walking into that murder scene would have been forever changed no matter how strong of faith you have..

Thank you for being a positive voice on faith crises/journeys! Everyone I’ve seen who gets thru a faith crisis is always so much stronger than before and they’re such a great example! A little advice, answer spiritual questions with spiritual sources. You won’t find your answer from somewhere else, just like how a veterinarian can’t treat humans-you need a human doctor for that! And always pray about how you’re feeling and what you’re thinking. “Doubt your doubts before you doubt you faith (and your built-up testimony)

I'm not sure that's the best analogy. Sure, if it's between a doctor and a vet, I'll take the doctor. But if it's between a vet and nothing, the vets knowledge in minor surgery, wound care, pain management, infection, digestive issues, basically 95% of what makes me need a doctor, a vet is going to be perfectly adequate. God sent shepherd (veterinarians) to treat Jesus when he was born. If it's good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me.

@rachelrasmussen1101
@rachelrasmussen1101 2 года назад
@@seans5289 well, we all have doubts. When you've had a faith that has been consistently rational, and you are presented with a doubt, you start by assuming the doubt is irrational and the faith is as it has always been. You say "why am I doubting? What has changed about me? Do I have a new fear? New information?" We can start with the premise that your faith has earned it's position in your life and the doubt has not earned it's position. A good comparison would be if a stranger came and told you your spouse was cheating on you. Of course you'll doubt your spouse's fidelity, but if your spouse has always been faithful, you'll question this stranger and their motivations, before you start hiring a private investigator and hacking his emails. Once you've vetted your doubts (of the stranger), then you can doubt your faith (in your spouse).

Do Mormons speak of “Heavenly Father” all the time? Being so imbedded in church culture must feel suffocating. A little history research should make Mormons uncomfortable and thinking of leaving this troubling church. The flash backs to Joseph Smith and Mountain Meadows point to the violent and problematic church ethics. Not that Mormons weren’t treated badly too. But the murders of the wagon train families from Arkansas ought to be a deal breaker for the faithful as Brigham Young ordered the executions and ended up wealthy from the stolen goods of those innocent families.

African-Americans have always been allowed to join the LDS Church, hold callings, teach, pray, and participated in the same congregations as any other ethnic group. Unfortunately, like many other churches in America, for many years there was a restriction preventing them from being ordained to the priesthood, and as such could not hold leadership positions. Both the Southern Baptist Conference, and American Methodist Conference actually split over simular issues. In 1978, Spencer W Kimball, who was then the President of the Church, received a revelation ending the policy. Since then Priesthood ordinations have not had ethnic limitations.

Black people weren't allowed to receive the priesthood or go to the temple until 1978. Meaning they couldn't go to the highest level of heaven under Mormon belief or be with their families for eternity. Members with even a "drop of black blood" were also prohibited. So yes, they could go to =church and pay tithing (of course!) but for all intents and purposes, they were second-class citizens.

Pyre reading the book in the car and having a breakdown over it was sooo realistic. It hit home for me big time. It was not “overblown” as you said. As someone who was the biggest Molly Mormon…seminary going at 6:00 AM, Girls Camp attending, Mutual attending, scripture studying, church college attending, marriage in the temple and so much more woman who finally found out at age 33 that the church is not true…this scene was one of the best in the series. So accurate. When you have the moment happen where your Mormon reality comes crashing down all around you…it is like coming out of a land of make believe. It is….heart wrenching, soul crushing and so, so hard and sad to go through. I felt you guys were treating that scene and a faith deconstruction flippantly, and as someone who has been through it….it is excruciating and filled with so much pain….and it does happen QUICK for most people. I’m tellin’ ya…they got the scene with Pyre RIGHT. My moment happened while I was listening to a podcast doing dishes. I was listening to this podcast about Mormon history and thought “No. No, no, no. This isn’t accurate. This didn’t happen.” Problem is…..it did. I remember gripping the sink and feeling physically sick and dizzy. Everything came crashing down in that moment. I’ll never forget that moment. It changed everything.

@SaintsUnscripted Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this series. I'm non-LDS, and I liked this series a lot. So, I'm glad to hear a practicing LDS perspective on it and where the inaccuracies lie. I can appreciate where you are coming from in disliking it (I have rolled my eyes at countless inaccurate or pithy portrayals of mainstream Christians), and I liked that you gave the series some credit in acknowledging where excellent work was done. However I didn't have the reaction that you seemed to anticipate in the non-LDS audience. As a result, I'd like to present some of the merits I saw in the series. First, I was surprised that you felt Pyre's faith struggle was out of nowhere. It was pretty clear to me that this faith struggle was what the series is about. And I noticed where his wife was picking up on it long before their conversation in the car. As an audience member, I'm not rooting for Pyre to lose his faith. He has a genuine relationship with God and it's heartbreaking to watch him crumble. Second, Andrew Garfield said in an interview that he had met with a mormon police detective who was going through a faith/family crisis while investigating a fundamentalist crime. So, it's fair to say that he was being true to a real person's story. Third, Pyre lives in a somewhat toxic community that doesn't allow faith questions. While it is very loving and supportive, it is protective to a fault. So it's easy for people to silently struggle and fall away. This type of community is familiar to many people of faith, and makes the story very relatable. Fourth, we can tell that this community is not indicative of the whole LDS church because of how Brenda's family is portrayed, particularly the Bishop. Like you, I loved this character! He was a picture of wisdom and grace. I couldn't help but think that if Pyre brought his questions to Brenda's dad, he wouldn't be told to "leave them on the shelf." Overall, I feel it was a successful story about a man losing his faith, and I liked that he didn't turn to bitterness in the end. He didn't end up like Allen. And it gives me hope that this is the beginning of him rediscovering God. After viewing your videos, I wish the series creators had been more responsible with the historical parts. Also, there were some characters that I felt were portrayed as two-dimensional villains, which took me out of it. But as faith struggle stories go, I find it relatable and well done.

To me, faulting a movie because it's "based" on a true story, rather than being a documentary, is to miss the whole point of the movie. The movie "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan" or "Thirty Seconds over Tokyo" or even "The Diary of Anne Frank" and many-many more, were all "based" on true stories. I think that when you discredit a movie because it's not as historically accurate as "you" think it should have been, you're really just discrediting it because it's telling a story you don't want to hear. Also, I'm not the kids you three are. I'm 71. And I'm a Salt Lake Mormon. I've seen a different "Mormonism" than you've seen. I love this Church and to me our Church has always been a good Church but trust me, it has it's share of ugly. As for the Lafferty family? I remember the ultra right wing, "John Birch Society--don't pay your taxes--Mormons." They were HUGE in the 80's. My wife's best friend moved to Canada, built their home in the woods, lived off the land, just to escape the "evil" US government. One of my best friends was a John Bircher and bordered on being a "Freeman." Talked me into going to a couple meetings. Both people I mentioned were and are, very-very good people and very devoute members of our Church. Also, the FLDS teach all the doctrines our Church USE to teach before "mainstreamism" entered our Church. The Church today has become quite a bit more mainstream, thank goodness. But we still believe in the same "ugly" core doctrines the FLDS teach. It's just not spoken about anymore. Pay attention. The words now are, "We don't practice that anymore." It's not, "We don't believe that anymore." We believe more of what they teach than you three realize. I think you are very unaware of a lot of our history and our doctrine.

For example the movie “The Lady of Heaven” gets banned in British cinemas because Sunnis claim that the Shia narrative of Fatima (which is what the film is about) is historically inaccurate. Now because of those protests the film gets banned. Meanwhile LDS say this series has historical inaccuracies yet the series didn’t get censored.

Thank you for putting out these videos. I’ve seriously been wrestling with this show’s portrayals and was glad that there are videos out there discussing this topic from an active LDS perspective. I was supposed to review this for a podcast I had been a part of for years, and despite me being brought on as the ‘token Mormon’ on their site (I originally was planning to quit before one of my friends asked me to help), no one else has been enthused at all about discussing this show. It’s just so boring and showing my friends there how often the series distorts facts (even the non religious details) further underlined that Dustin Lance Black wasn’t interested in the actual story of the case but more what the book’s thesis promotes. The fact he did almost no effort to consult practicing members or the family members about the case says a lot too. To Andrew Garfield’s defense, my best friend has a colleague whose dad is a cop in Utah that Garfield consulted to research the role. Of everyone involved, he seemed the most interested in being authentic as possible. Because heaven knows DLB’s dialogue wasn’t going to help him do that! @@melepearl7916 Yup. Sadly, that’s not the case for most of Hollywood. They show an open hostility towards LDS to not only demonize/belittle members, but to do so using no substantial support outside of hearsay, cliches, and sometimes outright fabrications. So far, the “best” portrayals I see of LDS in mainstream tend to be very small roles like the Mormon doctor in “House” or the Mormons in “The Expanse.” And even then, they either get fired, fail their objective, and/or are mocked for being naive and/or weird. As for DLB, his goal was clearly to vent his frustrations since he’s a former member himself. He has been trying to make this as a movie for years before doing a show. Since he’s one of the “good Mormons” who left and is openly critical of his faith, he gets a platform to say whatever he wants. Not to say our culture as a media industry has done much to help either. From personal experience, I tried to pitch a more nuanced series about LDS portrayed as normal people to a church filmmaker who claimed they were open to more genre filmmaking, but then they felt it “wasn’t to their interests” (that’s not church leaders speaking mind you, since the biggest issue with LDS media is middle men like that). So someone at some point has to be bold enough to put a real portrayal out there!

It's a shame you came to that conclusion. I just finished the show, and while some scenes were overly dramatic (clearing rocks scene made me roll my eyes) it's clear it was made with a great deal of love and attention. These dismissals were not nearly as rigorous as the content they were dismissing. The title of the show never happened, because the speaker was quoted verbatim by a newspaper but not by a church publication? Pointless gatekeeping. Regretting how the director was treated by the LDS, but not acknowledging that this treatment was wholly in line with policy? You might as well say no gay man is allowed to talk about LDS issues.

I'm Christian (reformed I guess?) And this series was heart wrenching to me. I don't know how accurate the portrayal of the LDS culture was, but there were many things that I didn't agree or believe in based on my how I understand my faith. And the fact that these were religiously adjacent people to my own made it that much harder. I was never in danger, not even once, of questioning my faith through this series (I've done that plenty of times outside of this) simply because of the above. I'm glad I found this video because I am so curious to understand the Mormon perspective. I've still got one episode to go but I kind of know where everything is going

Kudos to you all for putting yourselves through the torture of watching that travesty of a TV series, so that you could give a thorough, honest, review for those of us who want to know about it from a faithful standpoint. I am also impressed with how you tried to be as objective as possible, even to the point of looking for any positive things in this series, and being kind and understanding towards those who are going through a faith crisis. Hopefully some folks who don't know much about our faith other than from watching bigoted propaganda like that awful TV series will also seek out videos like this which give a very good, thoughtful, fair, and openminded review of that abysmal series from a faithful Latter-day Saint perspective, from the youth of the church. Also I hope they watch some of your other cool videos which address the many misrepresentations and false history put forward by that series as 'true history'. Many times these over-the-top hit pieces on our faith can actually cause people to investigate it more, due to the high incongruity between the way these hit pieces portray our faith vs. what they see in the lives of real life Latter-day Saints.

I grew up in Utah in the 80's as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, the first thing I noticed in this show was the first time it shows Det. Pyre's kids playing in the yard my first thought was, is this show about polygamists? Because the only kids that dressed like that in the 80's in Utah were immediately recognized as FLDS. So not an accurate description of how I saw things growing up; however, there were families that were more extreme than others. My parents weren't from Utah, they raised us differently than some of the other families in my neighborhood. I had friends growing up that weren't members and definitely felt ostracized by the people my age from my ward because of my friends. Now I have heard the twelve and other church leaders multiple times come out and say that this is not ok. But I also remember sitting in Young Women's and being taught that we should stay away from non-members because they will pressure us to do bad things. Now I hope they are not still teaching this way, because I had some pretty incredible experiences helping people come closer to Christ that I don't think would have been possible if I had shunned those people that were my genuine friends in high school. I did find this show mostly offensive, but somehow, I just had to see it through to the end. But now that I've watched this, I find that 90% of my suggestions from Hulu are anti-LDS shows and things. I feel like there is definitely something fishy there.

"The One Might and Strong" is a reference to the D&C. There's a chapter that basically chastises people for trying to overthrow Joseph, but people throughout the years have misused this to suggest there's going to be a "true" prophet that'll actually restore the church because Joseph failed. “We have difficult stuff as it is, why do you gotta add all this confusion over things that aren’t true?” To ask this question is to miss the very point of this entire series. A TV miniseries drama’s purpose is not to be a documentary account of a historical event. If you are confusing entertainment with academic study then, I’m sorry, but that’s entirely on you. There’s a reason filmmakers and producers place the text “based on a true story” either at the beginning or end of a filmography that deals with a historical occurrence (and in case you need me to show you, this occurs at the end of each episode in the credits after the executive producers are introduced). We allow TV and filmmakers to do this because we accept that some degree of artistic liberty will be taken. If we wanted the actual facts, we wouldn’t bother watching a TV series, we would dig up the actual police report and read the fine typewritten print. And I feel like the three RU-vid videos that this channel has produced on this series, totaling almost 1.5 hours in length, is nothing more than a Mormon version of Cinemasins where they say, “Oh, that’s not believable,” or, “Oh my gosh, I couldn’t help but laugh because that was so cringe.” So for this channel’s central criticism of this series to be nothing more than, “oh, that’s inaccurate and we would never do that,” shows that this went over your heads. Series like UtBoH are an act of storytelling and storytelling has much more to do with commentary on the present than on the past. When we tell stories, we do not include every single detail. The intentional choice of details is what makes the story work. What could Dustin Lance Black be saying about the present Church or its members? Here’s what I think and got out of UtBoH. Mormonism’s whole reason for being is that Joseph Smith had personal revelation and Mormonism believes that people can have personal revelation from God. But a problem emerges from this because if revelations are dissonant, then whose is correct? Whose is really divinely inspired? The contemporary LDS Church has solved this problem by centralizing all authority to the Prophet and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Personal revelation is not divinely inspired unless it comports with the revelations of the current sitting Prophet. And this creates a power structure problem for people who have faith crises, particularly those who are impacted by the Church’s practices and policies. At one point, Black men could not hold the Priesthood. The Church had a revelation and changed its position and then permitted Black men to hold the Priesthood (the change happened, by the way, a mere six years before the Lafferty murders occurred and UtBoH portrays the Church’s preoccupation about its public image in the wake of this change). So what does this say about the previous policy of discrimination? Was it divinely inspired? Or simply a human position that was portrayed as Godly? And you can’t tell me that there was universal buy-in or agreement among all members after the First Presidency ended the discriminatory policy in 1978. I’m certain that there were members who superficially went along with the policy but probably thought it was wrong. Because what would that say about their faith before the change? That it was only partially true? And how can something be partially true in the One, True Church? But to be good, true-believing Mormons they had to follow the Prophet because that’s how the Church is set up. But can this power structure enable abuse? Where is the line between faith in a set of values and teachings, on the one hand, and blind submission to a social system, on the other? Can the hierarchical arrangement of priesthood holder and wife, which mirrors the larger relationship between Church member and Church authority, be problematic? But racial discrimination in the priesthood was so 20th century, the Church doesn’t have anymore problems, right? Well, I think you should ask the people who are handing in their resignation letters why they are leaving. Does the Church’s current or former policies around LGBT people or children of LGBT parents create any emotional pain in members who are impacted by that policy? Again, power is key here. Why does the membership have to wait for the Prophet to “have a revelation,” for example, that LGBT people are okay and they can priesthood blessings? This channel criticizes UtBoH’s suggestion that Priesthood blessings can be made up on the spot. But how do you know whether something is divinely inspired or not? You can’t, is the simple answer. And similarly, how do you know whether a personal revelation, whether from the Prophet or from a mentally-ill domestically-abusive husband and his group of libertarian brothers, is divinely inspired? Again, the simple answer is that you can’t. So maybe the LDS Prophet or the General Authorities aren’t telling you to get plural wives or murder people, in the same way that Ron and Dan Lafferty did under the guise of personal revelation. But what if the Church tells you that you shouldn’t give priesthood blessings to the children of LGBT people? Maybe General Authorities don’t speak in a breathy voice. But maybe an Apostle will give a General Conference talk in where he describes how he physically attacked a missionary companion who came out to him and everybody is just supposed to go along with it. You don’t think UtBoH isn’t making any commentary on these questions of power and how decisions are made in the Church? This channel’s response to this series is more apologetics. It asks people to just watch their videos, they have the actual facts. But what people don’t need is more gaslighting or claims that they’re just confused. The reason why people leave the LDS Church or other similar highly-demanding religions is actually really simple: it simply takes more mental effort and emotional energy to continue to stay in the Church, with its contradictions, than it takes to leave. If you aren’t happy in an organization because of the stuff its leaders do or say then why bother staying? I appreciate how this video at least acknowledges that faith crises are real and that the hosts recognize that the way Detective Pyre’s wife reacts to his crisis is harmful. But discounting something because you don’t like its presentation or isn’t relatable enough to you, like UtBoH, probably reflects how you would treat the messiness of someone experiencing a faith crisis. They will probably say things you don’t like or agree with or might have a different account of events than you. Just look at all the people in the comment section here who grew up in the 70s and 80s and are confirming that the Church’s culture was as conservative as portrayed in UtBoH. Does their experience not count because it isn’t yours? And dismissiveness is certainly how the Church treated the murder of Brenda and her baby. “That’s not who we are. We aren’t those radicals.” But to dismiss is to, again, miss the point.

Also considering that Joseph didn't need the plates to translate some of the things in the book of Mormon, I don't think the plates contained everything word for word. I think a lot of the book of Mormon is quoting words from the bible and some came from revelation. It makes sense to me that the plates did not weigh 900 pounds. Also, I love Ether 12:27. It's a really good encouraging scripture from the book of Mormon and has helped me grow in my life. I have not seen anything quite like it in the bible or anywhere. It's so good and life changing. I'm not lds, but many of your comments are from the perspective that everyone will stereotype Mormons under one viewpoint. I don't think you give credit that a layman has the ability to differentiate between more liberal, conservative or fundamental viewpoints. Reading many comments from Mormons and ex Mormons it seems like there is consensus that more is represented correctly versus not in the movie. It definitely seems like you were watching the movie from the lens that the creators intentions were to make "jabs" at mormons regardless of the branch of Mormonism being practiced. The show had a broad spectrum of Mormon characters. I think it would have been an injustice if they had only showed "your specific flavor of Mormonism of your geographic location and circle of friends". I sense that you feel like "if only the world knew about my circle of friends version of Mormonism" they would understand that the one true church, really is the true church. But have you ever thought, that your version of Mormonism is not comprehensive and representative of all lds? I think any dark messages that you're feeling from the movie, realize that it's not specific to Mormon religion. It's a lesson that can be applied to any organized religion where the basis and intentions of religion are good, but all religions have the capability to be twisted to a imperfect man's narrative. Generally the basis and intentions of all religion are good, but all religions have the unfortunate issue of being misrepresented because humans can and will be bad. Also religions that emphasize "vending machine" type relationships with God or promises for salvation, tend to unintentionally create divide among society and judgement. What you believe now or strictly don't believe in now as a Mormon, don't you think that is subject to change based on society popularity? Ie "heavenly father" might have been used more in 80s, but not now because "less cool, or cheesy". Have you thought of what you believe now, that will in the future be considered old fashioned and change to attract new members into the church. I think because of this evolution to "fit society", people have issue with organized church... It's simply a club, like any other fraternity, government or organization that may not be as godly or spiritual as they are sold to be, but that adapt for the purpose of "growing membership"... And that in itself doesn't resonate with spirituality or ideas of enlightenment. Instead of seeing a show as an attack on your specific faith, maybe look at the series as a narrative that show how historical religious scripts breeds extremists, moderates, conservatives, liberals groups and anything in between for all religions.... I think that's the point that you've missed. All these scriptures(old,new, book of Mormon, etc) can be adjusted to fit ANY of man's narratives. As most organized religions just want to point out the utopian viewpoint, this series is refreshing in that it shows both positive and negative portions of religion.

As someone that has never been religious, i really enjoyed the show, loved it even! When it comes to the Mormon representation in the show, i feel that you may allow bias to have a bit too much sway, which is completely understandable! But to claim that the religion isn't capable of breeding dangerous men, strikes me as naive. Hate can come from anywhere, many dangerous men have come from and still come from religions all over the world. The men who committed the crime were not mormon in my eyes, they were a cult of misguided and dangerous people who use religious text and doctorin to hold onto power and do whatever they want by claiming it's gods will. The crime wasn't committed by any god, it was committed by cowardly and evil men, using religion as a tool, but from what i know of the religion, i can't help but not be surprised. No religion isn't without it's questionable sides, but from an outsider perspective, the church seems very closed off to new ideas and individual views, especially those of woman. I just can't help but feel that your bias has had too much sway, but that happens with all of us! we are only human! have a wonderful day!

I watched through the 3rd episode and quit for a number of reasons. It started arguments in my house because its inaccurate portrayal was taken as accurate by my wife. I saw no way to get any benefit from it when it got well documented facts like the brothers were arrested in Reno by the FBI not in some fake Waco scene in the back woods of the Uintas telling me that I couldn't trust any of the content to be the least trust worthy. I will only recommend this series as an example of poor film making and personally believe it is a waste of some very good film makers like Andrew Garfield, and Ron Howard. What a tragedy, this show has such potential and only succeeded to show what a poor film maker Black is.

If you'd watched through to the end, you would have seen that they were arrested in Reno. But I think the focus on this series was on a faith transition.

@@cityjuice Agreed there is a place for both true crime and faith crisis in film. My issue is that by diminishing the facts of the true crime it distracted me from his attempt to justify the faith crisis story because if he is going to play fast and loose with verifiable facts then I can't trust his presentation of the faith crisis. By being more meticulous of factual accuracy the faith crisis would have given more weight to the faith crisis for me.

I disagree Luke. I think a lot of lesser changes were made specifically to keep certain things private. I noticed that in the Temple ceremony and throughout the investigation. Too many things were only similar, not exact. I also think people's lives were protected as well, by not being quite so specific on a lot of detail. The writer said Pyre is a fictional character, but I'm positive there's a real Detective Jed Pyre, by some other name. All done so to protect him and his family from backlash from the church and church members and especially from his family. I think it all depends on "how" TBM you are, that will determine the amount of fault you found with it.

The funny thing is that the series is super accurate and the fact that you can’t see it is alarming. That is how you guys look, I dare you to film your church interactions and watch them, that’s how it looks. As a Mormon that has been in the church since birth and was a believing member for 30 years I can tell that the ones trying to trick people and miss lead them are you guys, disgusting. Just, lies, lies, lies… trying to hide things and manipulate the truth. “We are not that bad and crazy”…Oh you are, you are crazy enough to not see it, and if you see it and just deny it well that makes you even crazier.

Sorry I lied. One more comment to help build your channel. I watch videos of a old man in his late 70s that has lived in an RV since his 50s and has over 70000 subscribers. RU-vid helps him supplement his social security and retirement incomes. He has a saying I like when he gets criticized for some of the things he does. He says you do you and I'll do me. If the Lafferty's had thought that way you would not be having this discussion about what they did. They would have let Brenda go on living her life in the Mormonism of the time and they would have just gone on and been another break off fundamentalist church like Warren Jeff's, the Kingston's, the Allreds, and all the others. You wouldn't have had the crusades with all that mass murdering if the Pope at the time had thought this way. All religions need to think this way. If they are doing things that are against the law like Warren Jeffs let the law handle it. At first it bugged me when he kept saying this but then I finally realized how totally right he is. God created us to all be different and unique just like everything else He created. What a wonderful Amazing world He created. What a wonderful AMAZING creator we have. AMEN! Hopefully 🤣

It ended the way I was sure it was gonna end: Andrew Garfield questioning the church because that's the only step a person can take in order to not be ridiculed by others. The only way you can be seen as normal as a member of the church is if you use self-aware humor and don't believe it a 100% like you curse once in a while or publicly attack the church's choices. The media is little by little putting us in a spot where there's only 2 options: You're a believer and you're a weirdo or you were born a member but left because they're crazy. Like the LGBT kiss on Lightyear, the actors and the media see people who don't agree with it as homophobic and close-minded people, like that's the only option.
@melepearl7916

I agree! People have always said “not everything is black and white”, but now all of a sudden you’re homophobic for not condoning something. But last time I checked, homophobia means to be afraid of homosexuality, not being unsupportive of it. In reality, we do (or should do) our best to love all of God’s Children regardless of their personal choices in life. We all have agency. We all have our own lives with choices to be made.

@God I don’t think being part of the lgbtq community automatically means you’re going to be oppressed. And oppressed by who exactly? I think you could argue that choosing to be lgbtq is equivalent to choosing to be free and be yourself. So I do think for some people that maybe they aren’t choosing to BE lgbtq, but perhaps are choosing to embrace that part of themselves. But I don’t think it should be a label or the part of your identity that makes or breaks who you are.

We did not live back when Joseph died so we do not know what REALLY happened. We only know the churches version. Also the way the young man mentioned the people drinking wine like it was weird. Jesus turned water into wine and He drank wine at the last supper and it was NOT grape juice like I was taught. Was that weird?

So biased, admit to not knowing certain parts of their history or avoid talking about it (or talk about parts that aren’t really foundational or important to seem smart), given incorrect information on the Mormon relation to blacks (weren’t allowed in their church until the 1970s), and avoid the fact that their faith in rooted in FLDS. Just because you “don’t practice” certain things anymore does not mean your religion wasn’t founded on these ideas and you haven’t received “further light” just to reconcile with these beliefs and make your religion fit within the current culture. I don’t think y’all would deny that.

The Doctrine is still there, they still believe in polygamy (after this life), they changed the gestures at the temple so you no longer slit your throat but the symbols are still there, they still believe that certain sins are beyond the atonement of christ, these people are desperate to keep as much people as they can in the boat that they are willing to outright lie if it means you stop digging into the real history of the church.

For those that decide to leave the church don't leave Jesus like so many do. There is life after Mormonism and Jesus loves unconditionally. It's about what He did not what you do. It's also not about religion It's about relationship. But if you love the culture stay and enjoy it. He will love you either way.

It seems like you haven't really paid attention to their responses to this show, especially how inaccurate in so many details, both subjective and objective, it is. If you come to your conclusion based on how Mormons and their history are portrayed in this show, you have really started off on a shaky foundation. @@vfxtutswithdan1893 They assess everything through their extremely subjective lens of being irrationally partial towards their religion. These so called "objective" inaccuracies are actually disputed by truly objective historians. Of course the church does promote its own version of history, but that version is far from objective. Nothing the hosts of this show promote should be taken as objective in the least.
