The Destroyer is a series of paperback novels about a U.S. government operative named Remo Williams, originally by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir. The first novel was published in 1971, although the manuscript was completed on June 25, 1963. Over 150 novels have been published. The main characters were adapted to film in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985). ...the more you know...

This video really brings back memories of watching REMO WILLIAMS with my family when I was a kid and thinking it was a lot of fun. My mom was a huge movie fan and we would talk about movies all the time. She loved Christine and the original The Fog from 1980. She passed away this week. I am so going to miss her comforting voice and talking to her about a movie she just saw on TV. I want to thank you Jason, Erin and the entire crew for lifting my spirits and taking my mind off my grief, if just for a little while. When I was age 5, this was one of my favorite films and Remo Williams was my ideal action hero. To be a complete human weapon facing all kinds of threats, even bare handed. The late Fred Ward with most of his own stunts, played the part pretty well. Joel Gray as Chiun (Golden-Globe nominated performance) was hilarious. Also the movie was an Oscar nominee for Best Make-up. Loved the story with it's action, humor and all the cheesy-ness. The Statue of Liberty sequence; part of the original movie poster, was what I was excited to see. The original score by Craig Safan is good and it's main hero theme is still exciting to me. The song,"What If (Remo's Theme)" by Tommy Shaw is very underrated, but decent. A tv series was planned and a pilot was made called "The Prophecy" (1988) on ABC. They kept the main theme/score, Remo & Chiun were recasted and I thought it was fun to watch. Dick Clark was executive producer of the movie and the tv pilot. Even in some recent years, they talked about revamping Remo Williams. Shane Black was interested at one point. But it looks like a newer tv series is in the works, either inspired by the movie or closer to the original 'Destroyer' novels.

Hot take before watch: This is one of the greatest B-movies ever made. It does not fit the philosophy of So Bad because all of the production and acting choices were top of the industry at the time. The storyline is the epitome of '80s action films. The "problematic cultural issues" of the film were 100% mainstream at the time. The stunt work is so damn good it should have been awarded and recognized. We have the iconic diabetes spokesman Wilfred Brimley showing how a pasty old man could play characters that were somehow menacing. Any kid that watched Saturday afternoon local station Kung Fu Theater absolutely lost their minds watching this. This movie hits you on a deep level like Star Wars if you are a genre fan. This is one of my favorite 80's movies from when I was a kid, they setup the possibility of a nice little franchise, that we never got to see more of. I do admit the movie does take a bit to get going, but i still love it. Yeah if you had seen this when you were a kid you would have probably loved it.

I remember back when this came out, yes I saw this in the theater, that people objected to Joel Grey playing Chiun. The producers never really gave a good reason for why they couldn't cast an Asian actor. A friend of mine was a huge fan of "The Destroyer" series of novels, and thought this was an "okay" interpretation.

This film is based on a long running pulp series called The Destroyer. I have read a ton of them. In the books he has a lot of cheesy banter with Chiun the Korean master of Sinanju (who despite hating Americans is obsessed with American drama's). After his training Remo develops superstrength and speed. The books are camp but also at the same time extremely violent. Remo pokes his fingers through flesh and bangs bad guys heads together so hard together they merge. He also turns entire body's into pretzels. He has fought, shape-shifting androids, subterranean beings under the earth. Oh, and one power he can't help is he is irrisitable to women, but he finds sex a chore.

The book series was called the Destroyer, and as a kid I loved them. Pure comic book- in the best way. I was really excited when I saw they were making a movie--but even as a teen I thought this was boring. You guys were much more entertaining by far. Now I'm off to buy some high-waisted pants!

I read a bunch of the books. The movie captures some of it pretty well, like Chiun's character. They nailed him. The bullet dodging and super human moves were pretty well done. But the books were certainly more R-rated and not as campy as the movie. Plus, I pictured Remo as a much younger guy, like Brandon Lee.

This was meant to start a James Bond style series, the director of this movie was Guy Hamilton who directed Goldfinger, Diamond’s are Forever, Live and Let Die, and Man With The Golden Gun, and the screenplay was written by Christopher Wood who wrote the screenplay for The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker. And the Statue of Liberty scene was shot at the Statue of Liberty while it was closed for restoration work that was being done on the statue.

Loved Remo as a kid, i remember me and my cousin renting the movie (we were around 12), totally blown away by it. It was like the best action movie we had ever seen, all the montage stuff we were especially thrilled by lol. You can totally see how they tried to make Luke and Yoda in ESB, just in a completely different setting, it was probably part of why we loved it so much.

Good point about this being a kids' movie. I saw this when I was maybe...7? 9? Thereabouts. The local network picked it up and I saw it with my dad. It ran several times throughout the year, and I remember us just enjoying it together. Seeing it again now is hilarious because the flaws are just so much more obvious (especially the old man's makeup - what the hell? 😂), but even so, this movie reminds me of bonding with my dad.

Greetings from Germany! That makes me a little sad now. I love the film, even if you are probably right and that it has something to do with nostalgia and that it is a bit childish. But the embarrassing moments in which Remo isn't the cool avenger are particularly charming. The fact that the whole thing doesn't happen so quickly also makes the whole thing more impressive, I think. And Fred Ward as an action hero also has something special. In Germany he went by the name "Remo - unarmed and dangerous".
