The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoff...
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.
“With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we've resurrected Alberta's voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

Rare indeed among women! Julie is not afraid of 'gooey' in the Floating Gardens of Babylon!!!!! "A gal named Julie is a joy forever. Her awesomeness increases! She will never wade into nothingness, but still will keep a clean reflection pool for us, full of sweet dreams and turtles and quiet reflections!" (apologies to Keats!) It is beautiful, even if it is expensive and gooey!

I'll add my 2 cents. Seal the pool and use barley straw bundles throughout to keep algae away. Some sort of water feature in the middle that keeps the water moving might help as well.

the centre must remain clear for mirror like reflections - the Countess said - but yes some sort of thing to move water

I agree. They REALLY need something to keep the water moving. Even if it’s run only some of the time ( maybe remove it when the visitors come ). I think it’s an imperative piece of the puzzle to keep the algae away.

As a fourth generation Oklahoman, I can attest to the fact the Oklahoma Brown tarantula is an "Okie" that you don't want to meet when you come and visit. In the summertime, they can be found scurrying across country roads in the late evenings. They are really easy to spot because they are so big, and they can jump high enough to land on your shoulder before they give you a big bite! Sorry, I'm not a fan of my local spider, and before visiting Mapperton, all Oklahoma Browns need to be far far away.

I've already posted a suggestion for resolving this in another YT on the same problem, it may be older. I'll keep plugging my 2c until I'm actually timely and the post has a chance to attract notice: there comes a time when all good men must consider earthworks... a trench along the pool wall on the damming water side, line the dropside and the bottom of said trench with a Dam liner, run a drainage hole and pipe through it at the deepest (in the middle perhaps) and have that sent under the pool to outflow somewhere on the other side downhill. Backfill your quite deep trench and cover it over again. Fill the cracks in the pool wall, fix the filtration pumps, kick back and enjoy.

Fascinating. Kids love that bug kind of stuff. Do they have speakers that give special presentations? You should advertise it more in park bulletins, recreation centers, home school groups, church bulletins, science museums, summer school programs, boy and girl scout groups, day care centers, libraries (ask the library to create a bug book list for your program - put it on their website and they can advertise your bug program), cotillion clubs, radio, community bulletins, local newspapers etc? Do you keep a list of resources to send press releases to? Do you have local mavens, that you can approach, that talk about community activities in their social media accounts? Can you tell the mavens that if they can get a certain number of visitors to Mapperton, and the visitor mentions said maven suggested a Mapperton event, said maven gets a free ticket? Do you collect voluntary emails from visitors so that you can send them updates on activities? Can you use that robot mower machine to mow big words, that can be seen aerially, and the words say something about visiting Mapperton? Can you adopt a Mapperton mascot, such as the eagle gates, dress Chris up in a Mapperton eagle costume, stand him on the side of the road with a sign advertising Mapperton? Mrs. Brown's boys did something like that. Regarding the Texas and Oklahoma spiders; I grew up in Texas about 3 miles from the Oklahoma border. We have great big black tarantulas. They are slow and remind me of Imperial Walkers.

The individuality of the houses and gardens is incredibly interesting (and refreshing after the corporate National Trust). That happens in families that have the same people involved previously all the time. It's like her comment about liking brown furniture instead of the trend toward the white commercial stuff. At a family funeral my father drew attention to the crystal sconces in the funeral home saying that in his youth when they used the abandoned house as a play house it had Victorian crystal chandeliers that they would used as target practice knowing by the sound of the break if it were real lead crystal or plain glass. The glass had a thud to the sound instead of the ping of crystal. This was back just after WWII and the old folks did not care for the older furniture also. Sounds crazy for kids to have access to guns but that was life on a cattle ranch in the middle of no where. Those bullets could have ricochet off the adobe walls, marble fireplace surrounds or table tops but when you consider there are about 40 first cousins just in one family and just as many in each of the other families you probably would not miss an injured one for a few days.
