The space under your home is the ideal hangout for snakes. That space is the restaurant supplying the snakes with rats, mice and other things to eat. Also, the space is a cool resting place for the snakes to escape the heat of the sun during the day. You need to totally enclose that space with snake fence. I would also construct another barrier of snake fence enclosing a play area for your children around your home.

I'm from Alabama and mothballs which you can buy at Walmart or tractor supply which old school folks put in their closets toss those underneath and the smell nothing will come under there. But once you don't smell them anymore you're going to get another box and start spreading them under there again. I grew up in a mobile home in Alabama and we had cottonmouth rattlesnakes and that's some dangerous stuff. It works. Snake screen is perfect but, I do believe that they should put some type of skirting around like they do on mobile homes that you can actually remove a panel if need be to get access underneath but it could be white whatever color you wanted it to be and it can be vinyl it can be metal it can be plastic I don't know. Hours was metal. We didn't have a problem with snakes because my step dad he took precautions because he knew he had three daughters and a wife that he did not want to get bit by a snake and taking it into the woods so it can come right back up it's not okay I know it's the politically correct thing to do on camera but off camera chop them up throw them in the lake let the fish eat them. When your child's safety is at hand and also your wife and unborn child you have to do what you have to do and a dead snake is the best snake.

@@tallcancerlady Cottonmouth rattlesnakes?
@tallcancerlady
@tallcancerlady 2 года назад
@@olddog610 Yes they are highly venomous they're only found in the south and we had cotton fields on two sides of our property and across the street so basically three sides of us was cotton fields. It was very dangerous during harvesting when the big machines come and somehow pluck the cotton out of the ball that it's in once it opens up and leaves the plants but, as you would assume snakes flee the area and our house was where they would end up. We would catch them going across the street wrapped around trees and in our city pool one time. My stepdad killed on site. No matter what kind of snake it was. Here we have black snakes and rat snakes and yes they kill rats but they're all still scary. Must have had never took it and threw it back in the field. That thing would come right back. That is in my opinion the most asinine thing that I have ever seen is taking it to the woods so it can come back The whole property needs to be treated to keep snakes off their immediate cleared property. We had regular rattlesnakes you name it copperheads were not going to kill you if they beat you but a baby could bite you and it didn't have the ability to control how much venom it secretes into you and it would kill an adult. My ex husband got bit by cottonmouth as a teenager all they did was take him in the house clean up and he just didn't feel good for a couple days. If it had been a baby it would have been a straight trip to the ER.

@@YektiChannel Thank you so much. Here in Alabama we've had to figure out ways to deal with rattlesnakes. Growing up around cotton fields we had to prepare for everything that comes with it. Snakes, field mice, those gigantic cicadas, roaches that are 3 in long and can fly. They don't look for filth they look for water. Water bugs that people get and filthy homes are small and totally different. Also red wasps, hornets and fire ants. It is a fight. I'm in the city now.

I remodeled an old house outside Ashville, NC in the mtns. It was infested with copperhead. I tried the smoke bombs, etc to no avail. Then an old farmer up there told me to use black snakes and gave me a big sack bag of them. I relegated them in and around house. Came back a week.later and had no copperhead. Turns out Black snakes kill copperhead. Non poisonous to human, and leave after the copperhead are gone. What I know is...it worked.

Those black snakes are called rat snakes. She’s absolutely right though, they kill vermin and other snakes that ARE poisonous. Rat snakes aren’t poisonous. Poisonous snakes should be killed. You get a hoe cut off the head and separate a long distance. Snakes can come back together and bite or the head alone with active nerves still can have poison. Having grown up in Texas and out in the sticks a lot I’ve been taught this stuff. Also you can talk to your local fire department and many will help in an emergency with snakes. Also there’s a gun called a snake charmer made specifically to kill snakes with, get you one!

Regarding the snakes: Keep the grass around the house very low and make sure that you don't have any points of entry into your home like holes, open doors and windows, etc. Don't keep rubbish piles in or outside your home where snakes can hide. NEVER place your arms or feet where you can't see. Years ago in Florida, a teenager got bitten and killed by a snake that was hiding in the laundry on the floor. I lived in snake country for almost 20 years. These deadly snakes are nothing to be releasing, these things need to meet their maker when you catch them! Be careful!
@jarnoverhoeven3118
@jarnoverhoeven3118 2 года назад
Don't kill them, but yeah, make sure they have no hiding places around your house, keeping everything clean and accessible also makes sure there are no little critters which they feed on, because if they have nice places to hide AND food they have a lot of incentive to come to the house. If you kill them, they cannot eat the mice that you also do not want around. Gotta say, that is a lot of snakes though.

We live in south Texas, when we mow we carry and shoot the poisonous snakes! We lost two beautiful dogs the first six months we moved in. They were protecting the yard and both were bitten by the snake that my oldest son took back to the wooden area. He hates to kill anything, even bugs. I sprayed painted a red dot on its body when he had it and it was the same snake that came back to the yard two days later!!! It was a hard lesson for him to learn at the expense of our pets, but he wouldn't listen. Now, all the kids have learn to shoot and they kill one or two every summer. The beneficial snakes stay and do their job on the farm. Sometimes the chickens and the cats get them, but it all works out in the end. We also deal with the wild hogs. They will attack you! Clearing 40 acres is a job and we let those that love to hunt them down do so on our property. The meat is donated. Protecting your family and yourself is very important. Just my two cents from an old lady in south Texas. GOD bless you all.

I'm in Texas too, the Snake Wranglers around here teach us all about them. Just a note: Snake repellant doesn't work. Snakes don't smell like we do. They can't smell moth balls, which I believe is illegal to spread outside anyway. Snakes are also territorial, so if you remove ALL the snakes, you're leaving an open territory for venomous snakes to move in. And then the rats move in too. I like the way this commenter leaves the non venomous snakes on the property, we've been told this is the way to go. They eat the vermin, best exterminator around!! Gotta Love Texas!! ❤

"An ounce of prevention" is what you may want to take. Relocating wouldn't be an option for me because even relocating them, they may return because it is prime property. If they're not mitigated now it will result in an infestation and then you will have a major problem. The Guineas are a great idea because not only will they control the snake population, they are great for eliminating the ticks which carry disease. Please wear boots outdoors. This is all part of living off-grid and you have done an outstanding job!! We all love you guys and want to keep you safe. Your home is looking beautiful and so close to moving in. Great job!!

I'm usually not an advocate of killing critters, but the area you're in will produce many venomous snakes. I would suggest dispatching them rather than moving them. They will return due to the heat and security your house provides. Plus, the dogs and the babies are so vulnerable, not to mention you two. And if you feel that killing them is a waste, I can tell you snakes can be really tasty, even the venomous ones. You could always eat them and know that other critters will also benefit from eating them if you kill and bury them. Folks that are happy about "relocation" probably never had to deal with this many venomous snakes or are unaware/unconcerned about the real hazard of having them around. You can try "Snake Mace" or a similar product, but it doesn't always work. Once you have them in the "grabber," it is easy to kill them. A large rock, a pistol with snake shot, a shovel, etc., will work. Keep the good snakes around for bug and rodent control but get rid of the venomous ones for the family's sake (pets included). On another note, the walls are, simply, perfect! WHat an amazing job! I can't wait to see the paint and flooring! Woohoo!

I agree, a small pistol with snake loads is the best way to dispatch a snake, long handled shovel is next. If you kill them cut off the heads and either bury them out in the pasture far away from the dogs or put them in your burn barrel or something like that where no one can get poked accidentally. If the dogs get bite it may not kill them but they will get bite again, because if they live through it they will hunt down the snakes until they can't anymore. Sorry if this sounds harsh but nature is that way.

I think a major reason for you having so many snakes is all the rain you've been having. Copperheads swim and with all the water around, they're going to be getting to places where you wouldn't normally see them. Also, it's summer and under your house is cool and dark, which is very attractive to them. You might want to think about some kind of skirting to put around your house to keep them out. Something like galvanized tin, which you could push down into the ground and screw into the container edge along the top. That would keep rats, mice and other varmints out, too.

Living here in Texas I can say you eventually learn to cohabitate with them :) Look up ways to keep copperheads and other snakes out of the yard to help keep down the encounters. keeping the lawn cut short, no debris piles etc are good steps. House raised off the ground makes a good place for them to hide so you will want to treat under there with a snake repellent or plants that have odors they hate (onion, garlic etc) or put a snake barrier that sinks into the ground and covers the space. They also tend to be around standing water sources so your pond attracts them too. Yes they will bite if cornered or threatened but for the most part they do want to avoid people. Good luck - love seeing the progress you are making!

Cicada are emerging from their long slumber, Copperheads are taking advantage of it. Their favorite hunting spot is probably right on your lawn. If you have the White Oak trees, the Cicada will climb up them so Copperheads will all look for a spot under the tree or on your lawn to hunt. Copperheads come out at night when it is cool to hunt, it's not uncommon for many snakes to be in a given area. We just never see it because they do it at night. Your home is near water where all the good hunting is too. You will want to move rock piles or wood piles away from buildings because this is where they will hangout. Be very careful going around at night as snakes will be out hunting when it is cool. Anything they can get under, like your house, they will because it offers cool shade. All summer and into the fall they will be active, especially, at night. If you have any mice or rodents, you will have more snakes. Keep this population down as much as possible. Seal all holes, crevices etc so they can't get into areas you don't want them. Maybe someday you will want to put a skirt around the house so they can't get in and even going underground with mesh wire around the fence line. If you stand outside and listen to the noise at night, the frogs, Cicada etc.....this is what they are hunting. Stay safe.

We enrolled our two dogs in a snake avoidance training program. The trainer used de-fanged rattlesnakes. (We live in AZ.) If there is someone locally who does this type of training, you might see if they would want your copperheads to de-fang and use in their training course. This fellow brought the rattlesnakes to the course in large buckets with lids - and holes for air. Other option is a zoo or herpetologist who uses these snakes to develop meds or antivenin. Safety for your growing family is paramount. I've administered antivenin to many snake-bite victims - not something you want to need. Best wishes to you all.

This program reminded me of when we lived in rattlesnake country. We had a summer home on the Missouri river that my Dad was remodeling. Our beds were high off the floor so that a rattlesnake couldn't reach us if they managed to get in at night. We had a snake stick that we all knew how to use. We rode horses through the hayfield and scatter snakes as we went. One time my sister was bit by a rattlesnake when we were almost to the top of a big hill. We had to use a snake kit and the boys laid her over the saddle and went as fast as they could down to get her to a hospital. She turned out to be ok, thanks to the boys with us having a knowledge of what to do when you are bit by a rattlesnake.

“Hardware cloth” on the existing fence will help, once you get them all out of your perimeter. Then the only way in would be the pond for the most part. Also keep bricks, rocks, wood, etc out from laying around next to building so they don’t hide in those types of spots. Also put the hardware cloth around bottom of trailers. For the block situation, they sell babyproof toilet wand that attaches from the top to the back of the toilet. Then you push the button to unlock it. Blessings to you all,

Negative. Their fence is wide open at the water line on the pond. Even if they beefed up the fence -- those snakes are damn good swimmers. They're still getting in if they want to. They will come back to an environment they like, and they clearly like this one. They need to be dispatched. I'm all for letting non-venemous snakes be... but the 4 venomous ones we have here in Texas (where they are) are all a SOLID nope! For Kens and Spencer... you may not want to dispatch them, but one of those snakes could easily be a death sentence to any one of you guys (depending how remote you are from medical facilities). We have soo many venomous snakes in Australia. We had a juvenile eastern brown in our lounge room last year. We opened the sliding door and it went out. We aren’t legally allowed to kill any snake over here. Spenser did good 👍 Is there anything he can’t do 🤩 They’ll be attracted to all their food sources that will be attracted to your foods ( mice, etc). The under house is a great haven for them.

I've got to add, yes there is something going on. It's called nature. The adults are producing young and they will continue to do so for generations unless they are controlled and that means termination. People will say that they very seldom kill people. That's all well and good but how about tissue (muscle) destruction, including heart, nervous disorders etc. I wish y'all the best.

In the 1940s in Vegas my friend built his house. When finished, he liked to have coffee and read the paper on his porch until one morning he stepped on the porch and heard the rattling of several snakes. It took him a long time to get rid of the creatures. They like shade during the summer months and unprotected areas under you house would be a haven for them, so please be sure to keep such places secure. Beau is so cute. Will be a beauty like her mom. I know you two know more than I do but I think I'd put a skirting around the bottom of the house to keep the critters out from under there. Skunks, and racoons can carry rabies, and it's not as uncommon as you'd think. My grandmother was attacked by a rabbit racoon in SoCal. A skirting would also keep snakes from hiding under there.

I highly recommend putting an extra fence up around your current fence, where as it goes into the ground, copperheads are small snakes, yet incredibly dangerous, so make sure that the fence is well covered so that they cannot slip through it. And I really recommend doing it fast, because at this time of the year, they will seek amazing hiding spots, and underneath a house is one of the most prefered shade areas. Also do not let your dogs go out without being able to see them, because a copper head can kill a dog easily. Please be careful!

Everything in @PigyMCs post is inaccurate or flat out wrong. Fence for snakes? Not a thing. Copperheads are dangerous and should be treated with caution and respect. But their bites rarely result in death (even rarer in dogs) and are often are treated without anti-venom. While snakes have been found under houses, they are generally not in cool dark places. They are cold blooded. They need the sun or a warm object for heat.

Every time I see something with rattlers in it, I am reminded of a customer I had a number of years ago. He never really talked with me much, other than when I asked him something. One day he took the time to talk with me. Even started the conversation. He told me he was retiring soon and was moving out into the desert. I saw his wife, like a few months later. She looked really sad. She told me that her husband was really happy with their new ranch. One day he went for a walk and was bitten by a rattler. He died before they could get him to a hospital. Sorry for the sad story, but I agree with many of the comments here. Dispose of each snake you find. I'm all for respecting nature, but when it comes to my personal space is concerned...only me and my family belongs. Everything else is toast. I saw a video of these guys that specialize in making a barrier around your house to keep out snakes. As I remember, it was not 100% but it reduced nearly all of the snakes that get into people's yards. I'd have some cats and traps, especially with a child in the family.

It's good to have space under your house so you can get to plumbing issues easier in the future but you need to put some kind of skirting all the way around the bottom to keep snakes or any other kind of animals from living underneath your house. I would personally build a concrete wall at the bottom and put a small door to have access to under there.

I have a healthy respect for snakes. They don’t want anything to do with us and we don’t want anything to do with them. In this case I understand the concern for nosy kids and dogs, but killing the snakes still doesn’t solve the problem. Other ones will come and you might not see it in time before you step on it or the kids/dogs see it and go up to it. Best to take some natural defenses. Snakes aren’t stupid, they won’t go somewhere where they think they’ll be eaten

Growing up in Kelowna, British Columbia, we had rattlesnakes and black widow spiders aplenty. My dad, being the smart man he is, landscaped the house he built with loads of cedar chips. The phenols in cedar is highly toxic to snakes/spiders/insects/rodents. Killing/exterminating the snakes is unfortunately the safest bet, but I highly suggest looking into cedar as a backup plan. Bonus = it smells great! Stay safe friends!!

You have plenty of snake advice--as for the compound-- a few things --first what you show as lines is created when the edge of the knife is shorter than the compound. Use a wide like 12 inch to 18 inch stiff but flexible knife and keep the compound in the center. As it gets toward the edges use a second knife to scrape it off the knife and compact it again in the center. You need to play with the knife angle.Perpendicular will scrape the surface. Flat will just slide over it leaving a smear. At some point between the two extremes, you will get the control you seek to get a smooth application. Second use a knife edge to slice off the ridges instead of sanding. This is far faster and barely makes any dust. Third do not sand use a sponge and a bucket of water. You want a firm grout sponge with an open pore structure. Squeeze it out to damp where it will not release water when you press it down. Rub the compound in a circular motion. It will remove the ridges. submerge the sponge frequently and squeeeze it to flush out the compound. Follow directly behind with your second hand to feel for a smooth surface. You will know when you are there. The bucket will develop a layer of compound on the bottom insted of the air. After paint you will not see any thing if you paint with flat paint. The more shiny the Worse it gets. Egg shell is a good compromise. Light shinning directly across the flat surface will highlight all imperfections. If lit softly the wall will apper flat but any straight edge will reveal the lack of being flat. As long as the taper is smooth a wall that is 1/2 of an inch out of flat over a foot or more will look visually flat. Anote on the spong method is if plaster is mixed into the compound--then this method will still probably need sanding because the plaster combined with compound does not disolve at the rate of plain compound.

LOVE your channel. My wife and I built our wilderness dream home in SW Colorado 11 years ago. Did much of the work ourselves and hired contractors more than we planned (we're past retirement age). That said, I plead with you to kill venomous snakes! We have killed quite a number of prairie rattlers (and also skunks - they carry diseases). "Relocated" snakes will do two things: 1. Return; 2. Continue to breed more offspring. We still kill rattlers occasionally, but nearly as much as before. Our county has lost several residents to venomous snakes. I have neighbors who have had dogs and horses bitten (dog died). Venomous snakes have their place in nature, but not anywhere near housing. Keep posting!!! We love y Vids. Your work and your love for one another are a wonderful inspiration to all of us!!!

I use to live in Eastern Washington which is dessert. We had sage brush and rattle snakes around our property. In August they shed their skin and become blinded for a while. One day I opened my front door and there was a rattlesnake laying on my sidewalk all 8 feet of him. I hollered about 200 feet away from my closest neighbor who heard me yell and asked me what was wrong. I said a rattlesnake. He said don't move and grabbed his shovel jumped his fencing ran down and used his shovel to cut it's head off. He was so kind and he said I will take it away. My hubby was at work at the time and I was very very pregnant. You need to kill venomous snakes or they will come back!!! We also had scorpions and black widow spiders. I always watched where I stepped for sure.

Put deer fencing all around the perimeters of your house, especially around the fence that you have up around your house, and that barn. If a snake crawls it will become entangled, and at that point it dies, I'm all in for saving the animals but taking them to the woods , that dont stop them from crawling back, especially with your daughter and dogs being in the yard, and you dont have good lighting in the yard at night, and I'm sure they can crawl where you shower at. . Copperheads like the pond. What's needed is non venomous snakes to keep the venomous snakes away. Snakes are territorial, so they won't encroach each other's territory. Rat snakes are non venomous, which is what they HAD, but removed. So now the venomous snakes are claiming the cool spot under the house. I expect this cycle to continue... Texas has snakes, it's just how it is. Especially out in the country. I don't especially like them, but the more educated I get about them (bcuz I live in The Hill Country of Texas) the more I am not freaked out by them. I mean, I don't like mosquitos either, but you just learn how to deal.

If you find a kingsnake or other species that eats venomous snakes you could keep it and feed it copperheads. I would if I had copperheads but I haven't seen any around my place. A copperhead getting eaten would make a pretty good video too.. and you have plenty. Wow. That's more copperheads than I've seen in my life..
