We're back at the garlic field this week! We're pulling off leaf mulch and assessing field conditions. How did the garlic grow during winter? Did we loose any? How about those bulbils...are they up yet? lots of questions and lots of answers and many more questions!

You have tons of pine needles. I would Mulch with that. Mix with some of the leaves. And plant rye in your walk ways for a wind break

Actually there are almost no pine trees here. Mostly black spruce and fir both of which don’t really drop needles. We’ve been thinking about rye. Thx!

Pine needles are a disaster in my garden. I mulched my raspberry bed and nearly lost it. Took years to recover. Pine do not tolerate competition and to prevent this, the needle exudate kills off all competitors… even baby pine trees.

@@TheHomesteadatFlatrock seems that way. I once cold stratified about 500 seeds from my Austrian Pine. As soon as they sprouted I put them under momma’s pine straw. In short order I had hundreds or baby pine trees. I was ecstatic! Then… about two weeks later… not one survivor. Momma told them to go find their own home, and since they couldn’t move, she murdered the whole lot of them!

@@garthwunsch crazy, didn't realize but that being said, I have noticed that its fairly bare under pines. Likely this is why.

it won't blow away if you keep it wet. YOu should water it every day just enough to keep it moist and heavy.

It’s a bit much to water, about .3 acres

@@TheHomesteadatFlatrock A bit of woodchips should be heavy enough to keep your leaf mulch from blowing away if you can't water daily.
