Kyle, you have a good quality that is almost unseen in the tesla enthusiast community which is the ability to not buy into the hype. You actually just look at things from a realistic perspective. And the cybertruck is a pretty awesome truck by any normal standards/expectations. It’s only a let down because people somehow believed a vehicle with double the battery of a model Y, 50% larger, brand new manufacturing process and a lot more was somehow gonna cost less than the base model Y.
@@Amund7A whole bunch changed since 2019. Pandemic, wars and crazy inflation. Elon was nieve to make such a statement but I don’t think he thought it was gonna take 4 years to build this thing.
Kyle you had the best coverage of the factory and I was glad to see the towing hitch. You are the only one who showed it as far as I can tell. Thanks for all you do.
Hey Kyle, love the vids, keep’em coming. On this video you were talking about Hertz and how they charge you when returning your rental. As an FYI, as a Hertz Gold Member you just have to bring the car back with 70% charge or better and they will not charge you a fee. That’s true at all Hertz rental places. I’ve rented a number of different electric cars at many different locations over the last couple years and haven’t had any fees added. Hope that helps you…..
Kyle thank you for being real. To bad not everyone looks at it with engineering interests. I loved the inside tour. Production engineers getting station by station into automation as it seems. Lots of manual labor still at the moment.
Fantastic video.. loved all the factory coverage.. so cool that Tesla was so open about the truck.. had some sitting around with lighting under them. There are some new innovations in the truck. I saw on the Haggerty video.. it is Steer by wire... 180 lock to lock. 48 volt main power system, and something about the internal comms systems.. maybe Ethernet based.. not sure. Hated the design when it came out in 2019... but its is growing on me... kinda like it now. Pricing seems fine to me... look at a loaded GMC Denali... its near $100K. But they should never have said it would be $40K to begin with.
Yep, we rented a Bolt from Hertz and they said not to worry about returning it at any specific SoC as they'll take care of it. I think they just wanted it off the lot since people are still hesitant to drive EVs.
Hertz is doing themselves a huge disservice requiring you to charge the car before returning it. They are setup to charge it themselves and being able to take and electric car drive 200 miles and not think about refueling it would be a tremendous advantage over ice cars.
Yes, but a rental car being tied up charging us not available to make money. Hertz would prefer that downtime be on your side not their side. A car forced to be parked for hours is not making any money.
@@sunrisejak2709 They could get a local private super charger to charge cars that are come in almost dead, and rent cars out in the order of percentage of charge.
Thank you for the event share. Really liked your up close look and all your comments, I have a pretty long wait at over 300,000 in line. Maybe the price will reduce by then. 🤩
At least Rivian honored reservation pricing. It’s a shame Tesla announced a price, then changed it. We complain about dealer markup and marketplace pricing but here is a manufacturer that announces a teaser price only to grab as many reservations as possible, then readjust the final price according to what they think we will pay. Rivian did better on this.
There was a huge inflation due to covid. If Rivian followed the same timeline I doubt that they could do the same. But then Tesla has 1M+ reservations which is way more than Rivian to honor as a revenue loss
But whats the point of announcing a price then? To be completely honest, they just need to announce "lock in your spot, price is TBD". Tesla announced specs and pricing. They actually didn't deliver on either.@@lanzer22
'we will pay.'.....There are hundreds of thousands of people with unlimited money who will 'pay any price' and don't care what it costs. Just cool your jets while they sort themselves out. I'm not in the 'we' crowd.
I've been watching your channel for a week now and every time I hear your voice I'm reminded of Doctor Demento's radio show. You sound very much like him.
I rented a model 3 in Portland last summer and it was several updates behind. I connected to WiFi x3 times at night during my trip and was still well behind… I think Tesla and Hertz need to work out an update system.
As far as pricing, anybody that thought they were getting a tri-motor for $70K was just kidding themselves. The dual motor/AWD for $72,490 after fed tax credit is a LOT more vehicle than a Model X for the same money. I'll be trading in our June 2020 Model S for this Swiss Army Knife! Love it.
Apropos of nothing - I was in Austin a few weeks ago and I had that grey polestar across from your parking spot :) it was wild to me that the rental polestar didn't have adaptive cruise, but I guess that's to be expected
It has to have the "Pilot" pack to get adaptive cruise. For 2024, that is included on the dual motor models. The one I am currently renting does have it.
Thank you for the video! I reserved mine, I don't need a truck but this is the CyberTruck and after waiting for so long I don't care what they charge I'm getting mine. Our garage measurements will make it a tight fit but our general contractor said he can give me 2" on both sides so I'm a happy gal. I will also add the range extender plus the ramp. It may be couple of more years but after waiting this long what's couple of more years.
Thanks for confirming that they’re not actually producing anything yet - or weren’t when you guys were there for the tour - and they were in demo mode!
Been following the channel for quite a while and I can’t wait till you get your hands on one and actually put it through its paces. We haul a 10,000 pound travel trailer so towing range is a little important, and I’m looking forward to real world testing on that.
It’s different everywhere and seems to be always changing, the first time I rented one through them it was at a super low state of charge but no requirement for charging prior to returning, super charging was also free which I had to do for how far we were going (Orlando area) the last time I got one it was nearly fully charged and they said it had to be above 90% which was easy because we barely drove it, that time it was a “manager special” and actually cheaper
Kyle, did you miss the fact that the front drive unit plaquer says it has an electromechanical locker? I saw that in Twitter by Greggertruck, and my mind was blown. That is a huge deal, puts Cybertruck in the category of only G-Wagen and Unimog (vehicles with front locker as stock equipment across all models). But I have not seen it mentioned anywhere else, I hope it will be true. Then of course, I can not afford this thing. I hope the price comes down a few steps before it comes to Europe (if it ever will).
You guys are so excited about this vehicle because of the content its providing but for some reason Rivian max pack has been out for a while now and because you aren't excited about it you haven't done any content on it but if you were excited about it we definitely would have seen testing on it by now. Thanks really appreciate it.
There’s a barcode that you scan with the phone and it adds the car to your tesla app. it usually appears on the bottom left section of the screen. Sometimes it takes a bit for it to show up.
There seems to be quite a bit of space above the BMS but below the bed. Much of that should be for the tonneau cover, but curiously they left openings on both sides of the bodywork for maybe a future gear tunnel like on the R1T.
The bed is SMC-carbon fiber, same stuff as the Aptera internal cell. Press molded. Very strong and lighter than steel. Ask Sandy Thanks for the shot of the bed compartment!!! It's all molded carbon fiber! With the track for add on items molded in to the sidewall. I bet the add on like the tie down is also SMC like the ones on the lower side wall.
Own a model 3 now, but used to rent from Hertz. The connection to the app is pretty easy - and being able to use your phone as a key on a rental makes life very easy!
Thanks for sharing. Will be interesting to see what kind of insurance cost level this vehicle will set: - any scratches in the bodywork will require a specialist (normal body shop can't fix it) - any dents in the stainless panels might need complete panel replacement (no spot repair technique works on that hard steel) - crashes might crack the casted chassis which will make the repair cost explode I guess those who can pay a $80k...$100k cybertruck in cash won't be bothered by $5k or more in annual insurance, but those who finance it (i.e. the majority) won't like the extra on their monthly payments
But scratches and dents will be more difficult to get in the first place.. Watch the Haggerty video.. they swung a rubber coated sledge hammer at it... NOTHING.. so a door opening into it.. is not going to dent it. If the impact is enough to get deep enough to git that casting, gonna be totalled.. as would any other car.
I really enjoyed watching this video from start to finish !' The Factory looks awesome and to see how it is built WOW !!' You have a COOl JOB . I hope to see a Tesla Cybertruck at the 2024 New York City Auto Show . . . . Keep the videos coming . Happy New Year . . . . . .
Got email from Tesla stating that my reservation is now active. Placed my order about 2 months after opening of deposit date. When I ran my estimated production date, it came back November 2025. Will see.
It was a pretty generic email that was more of a sales pitch to buy a Tesla before the end of the year. Just stated that my reservation is now “in the queue.” Nothing specific.
Just a note to reflect on price. Do not talk about inflation as it applies to all vehicles. What was the price of a M3 at that time the Cybertruck was announced? How does it compare today to the price of a M3? There is your answer.
Meh, i’m shocked by the price, the potential for such slow charging. The range, however, is the dealbreaker is towing, it’s going to be on par with the lightning.
I agree. It’s grown on me too. Not sure how any trims of this can sell under $100k. That design is insane and has to cost a pretty penny to build. Thanks for making and sharing your trip!
Aparantly one of the trims is $60K which is less then the current Hummer but above the rest... Still Not bad I just wish when they to out complexity like fly by wire instead of hydrolics or both it would make it cheaper. It starts at $60k for the RWD basic trim and goes up to $100K for the top trim.
@@MackUtley Thanks, I new there was something a bit familiar about it but I couldn't pry it out of my head. That's what it was, the Aztec, I'm sure the Cybertruck will be just a popular.
Actually it should be cheap to build, because it's way much simpler than a traditional pickup. The large castings and the sheet metal panels remove many hundreds of robots from the line.
Thanks for taking us along to the event! Very interesting and glad you were able to share the different phases in the assembly line. Looking forward to your review once you get a chance to put a Cybertruck through its paces.
What an amazing vehicle! It drives like a car. And carries people and cargo like an SUV. At the same time it works like a truck. Could CT be the first triple crown winner of Motor Trend's OTY?
see what EV's will be like in 3-5 years with resale and battery replacment cost. I would never buy a used tesla or any EV..so the resale will be terrible...so unless you have money to burn..thats the car for you.
For a Mk 1 model, it’s a remarkable piece of Engineering, they didn’t take., 70s truck and stick a battery in it. It’s designed from the ground up, watch the video with the Engineers.
I am thinking it is not the "beaf" of the control arms but the special alloy that maybe makes the difference in structural rigidity of the suspension, lets hope!
I am also happy to bet that induction motors are just cheaper to build and the raw materials easier to access when ramping up. They're giving up power per unit for it, it seems. EPA tests are then driven off the single front motor which is likely geared differently, optimally for the EPA cycle, with the rear motors coasting more efficiently that the Model S motors would have been. Is the front motor permanent magnet still? That would kind of make sense. When the rear Model S motor got a PM front, efficiency got a lot better I seem to remember.
So the stainless steel pillar covers are definitely not functioning as an exosceleton structure, when they dissolve from the frame underneath in a crash. Overall a very good money proposition, one should not forget that it is technology wise top notch and superior to anything else available in the truck segment.
Those Hertz EVs made me want an EV... Not necessarily a Tesla but still a good test. - I also didn't like the CyberTruck but after watching some videos today I'm thinking it's pretty darn neat
Do you need a truck? Then the CT is currently the best option on the market. If you need a "normal" car a Model 3 or Y or maybe a BMW i4 or maybe something smaller is the better choice.
After seeing the specs and prices for the cybertruck RWD, I cancelled my pre-order. The lowest configuration of cybertruck is pure trash. I rather they not insult us with that joke.
I rented a Y from Hertz and its driver’s seat was trashed as well. My 3 has almost 50k miles on it and the driver seat looks almost brand new. What are people doing to these things?
In Europe we have motorcycle license plates that are more narrow. So they are often used on cars where standard European license plates do not fit. However due to the sharp angles, I don’t think it will be legal in Europe as must cars need a “soft” front to be allowed.
Ahah, so that's where the "extra bed length" over other trucks comes from. The slope of the rear seat. You will be lucky to get more than one 6" sheet of plywood in there.
Kyle you were talking about your Rivian over heating when towing. How does the lightning do with towing? To be honest I'm thinking about going lightning after they switch to NACS / their next ev truck version. When I preordered the cybertruck I mostly was thinking about the charging network. Now that NACS is opening up thinking about alternatives.
Rental EV just doesn’t work if you’re having to bring back basically fully charged. Who wants to sit top charging for an hour. ICE rental much more sensible with quick top up tank and go.
Still don't think the design/style is ever for me. They'll probably never make a normal-ish looking truck. By the time I'm financially ready for a second vehicle there will be other manufacturers, hopefully with NACS by then. I'm not too worried about the "innovation" side of things on this. They're using mostly what's tried and true. I am surprised the rear motors are induction though on the tri. I'd like to know the reasoning for that. I'm assuming the front axle is the primary then on that model. Which honestly would be slightly better for slippery conditions. The rear end kicks out a bit on my model 3 on snow/ice before the front kicks in.
People were so mad that they cant get the unicorn pricing from 2019. Was never going to happen after the last 4 years. I am completely fine with pricing and specs.
Pricing will fall as first adopters willing to pay a premium price are sopped up and costs fall as production ramps up. Next gen 4680 will increase the range too.
Wow I rented a polestar from Hertz and it's listed on their ev site you can return at 70%. But that was January so maybe they changed it. Had no problem returning less than I got it but above 70%.
I am a bit disappointed about the range, was hoping around 400 miles per charge, 320 is a bit close for me. Once or twice a week, I drive about 300 miles. With the Texas heat, don't think I can get 320. Hopefully, things change, it will take at least a year or two until my order is ready.
