Outdoor Vitals EXPOSED: Why I DON'T use their gear + their Annoying YouTube Ads

Tayson Whittaker, founder of Outdoor Vitals joins the show. After getting to know Tayson at PCT Trail Days I've come to really respect him and his company. However, I have a big problem with Outdoor Vitals gear which I confront Tayson about. I also wanted to get to the bottom of those annoying Outdoor Vitals RU-vid ads we've all been seeing for years now!

I really appreciated the answer to your question about OV’s equipment not being the cheapest or the lightest. It was helpful to hear that that they are creating equipment for performance in a wide variety of conditions. Thanks for the awesome podcast!

When you go out with the OV crew on a trip you have to try out the CS40.., You’ll be blown away by how well that thing rides and how good it feels on your back. It’s even got some loops on the bottom so you can get some shock chord to strap on your camp chair.

Fantastic video! I have three pieces of outdoor vital gear. I like their pillow real well I have several of them. I use one of them almost every day in bed because I’m a side sleeper so I have their pillow between my knees. I love using their pillow in my hammock for my head. My wife stole my synthetic puffy jacket. She loves it because it has pit zips. I bought their down stitch-less puffy jacket. It’s so warm that I only use it in the winter, because I live in southern Missouri. Thank you so much for having Tayson on your show. Much respect for both of you. Be blessed. John.

I like to see these conversations, to be able to see that the company is the people, not just a company. 100 mile trails seem like impossible to me right now. The furthest i've done is six miles round trip and my legs were rubber mush at the end. I was able to recover decently. That was a couple years ago. I was convinced about using trekker poles after that.

I used the “free” pillow to hike the AT. It lasted all the way around 1100 miles. Then it was leaking so much I finally ditched it. It was a good pillow while it lasted! The name brand one I replaced it with isn’t any better either. 😊

Ya... those annoying ads work - even though I couldn't wait to press the skip ad button. I wasn't interested in the pillow - but it drew me into their products (their research, testing, and passion for what they do) and this year I picked up their Stormloft Quilt. I've used it all year. Love it. And this interview added another layer of credibility. Good job!

Great episode! It's nice to see comment with Tayson that isn't the like ad! Back in 2018 i think it was when OV did their first puffy jacket on Kickstarter, i ordered one and they gave me the free pillow. I still use my pillow for camping and when I'm traveling is small enough that I use it on the bus, train or plane. I haven't used the jacket as much because I haven't been hiking but the pitzips are great, is a very warm jacket for his small it is.

I found Outdoor Vitals 3 or 4 years ago - so far it has been an outstanding company for ME! Great people - really nice product and Tyson and crew always give reason for why their product does what it does. To me that makes more sense than just reading "statistics/materials" about something and trying to figure out if that's better than what you may have. Anyway, Kyle thanks for having Tayson on. I have called and talked to them and found them very helpful, very responsive, AND absolutely great to work with on info or problems or care of the gear. I really enjoyed learning some things about OV today.

I can't afford most ultralight gear from anywhere, but I watch the sales, and managed to get some OV down booties and a 1/8 in foam pad (after my puppy destroyed my GG pad 😂). I LOVE the down booties, and my friend was about to steal them from me when I let her wear them one weekend trip 😂 I'm in Canada, where we don’t have many UL gear companies at all, so ordering gear from US companies is even more expensive. The high price on UL gear, plus dollar exchange plus shipping and freakin' customs duties is quite prohibitive. So I gotta watch for clearance sales! I'd love to get some more UL stuff, and IV would be one company I'd be shopping from, but my budget just mostly can't handle it. I need a new job. Hey Tayson, are you hiring and can you sponsor a work visa for me? 😂 I've never been to Utah, but the hiking looks really amazing! I can be an "old fart" tester. Expand your demographics some 😉😁

Yes, food drops are possible in the 100 mile wilderness, and it seemed like most hikers took advantage of this when I thru hiked in 2021. I think this luxury is worth it to enjoy this gorgeous wilderness. I’m with you Kyle- I need my gear to be as light as possible, but I discovered this through miles of hiking. In my opinion it’s a choice that comes after a lot of backpacking and experimentation.

Never bought anything from them, but definitely heard mixed reviews. Glad Tayson is at least a genuine dude. My problem with the company is that they label a bunch of their stuff ultralight when it is most definitely not ultralight.. Example: Their ULTRALIGHT Dominion 2P Tent which is a 4lb tent that you can make 2lbs 12oz simply by leaving the fricking tent body behind 😂😂😂
@thetaysonwhittaker

I bought some of OV's gear when they first came on the scene. I bought a couple sleeping bags and the Dominion 2.5 tent, after watching Shaun from Sintax77 video's. I found the gear to be substandard, I had issues with the tent, contacted OV made a few suggestions, but when I contacted them they pretty much blew me off. I ended up giving all that stuff away. That being said, maybe they have changed over the years, but they have left a bad taste that still lingers to this day. Even though my good friend Bryce Newbold edifies them I still find it hard to purchase any of their stuff and tend to stick mostly with the smaller cottage businesses.

His prices are not crazy high but not great. When I think of cottage industry, I think made in some town in the USA not Asia. He seems like a very nice person and I wish him well. That trail in Wyoming looks beautiful. It’s now on my to do list. Question I am not sure what classification my Arc Haul falls into, is that a framed pack? It does have metal stays or is a framed pack like my Granite Gear pack?

I haven't finished the video yet, but your title (which is always intentionally and often humorously clickbait) is brutal to a guy you genuinely seem to like and don't seem to have a problem with his gear.

I appreciate your feedback, the title is a bit harsh BUT I think it's fair. Both subjects in the title were discussed, AND it certainly drew you in to hear Tayson's pitch for Outdoor Vitals didn't it 😉

No, it didn't. What drew me in is that I enjoy all of your podcasts and videos. They always entertain. I found out about you sometime back when Taylor mentioned listening to Trail Tales while hiking the AT. Thank you for all the content.

Yeah, definitely the most off-putting title/thumbnail Kyle has ever created. Do his viewers really want to watch a podcast if he is shitting on his guest in the title?

It is a horrible title & thumbnail. Deliberately provocative (& in bad taste imo) I just hope Tayson is ok with it.

I agree. Only clicked on the video to check the comments to see if it was serious, so I don't mindlessly write off a good brand because of a bad title (because I'm not an NPC). When you have a click bait title, you need to balance it with a thumbnail that gives you a hint that it's not a dead serious condemnation and actually the source of a good conversation.

As a consumer that spends real money on camping and kayaking, this company needs to get in touch with consumers and listen to our voices. I respect this gentleman’s right to his beard. Love it wear it. That being said he needs some younger without a mile long beard to do his commercials. And change them up, please! I refuse to watch that old jacket commercial again! I’ll not watch the video to avoid that old commercial! I tried calling to speak to someone at company one time about product info, after syntax77 advised it. Never got anyone and forgot y’all existed. I’m sure he’s a expert and he trains his people, but no one is listening to us and what we want. Not what his competition is making. Their losing business for the same reason this gentleman is. They charge to much for stuff and they lack good marketing.

You talk about hiking , you dont do much hiking. You just insert your mostly negative thoughts in other peoples stories. Id bet you are hating on this company bc they dismissed you and didnt sponsor you😂

How much time spent on manicuring the beard? It's not attractive.

Such a great interview! I love that they actually design & test their gear in various scenarios! I four season camp - so it's nice to see gear that's not just based on 2-1/2 or 3 season camping. Also, in the 100MW - you can resupply 1-2 times (my friends & I got 2 resupply drops) - a couple places do them.

Anyway, Kyle thanks for having Tyson on. I have called and talked to them and found them very helpful, very responsive, AND absolutely great to work with on info or problems or care of the gear. I really enjoyed learning some things about OV today.
