I'm going to be doing a devlog (development log, in my case documenting a game I'm making) -- So it's very focused -- doesn't need a "topic" per-se as it's it's own topic. Most of these "how to make RU-vid videos" videos are focused on someone coming up with individual topics, creating a narrative for the individual video, how to create questions in the watcher's mind to compel them to watch, having a beginning middle and end, etc... Mine is just documenting my process of this one project. Honestly don't want to target developers specifically (although they're welcome to watch as well) but just anyone that wants to know what goes on behind the scenes, like people who like listening to movie audio commentaries or really like watching the bonus behind the scenes stuff, or maybe someone that likes to watch others play a game, rather than play it themselves. So it's tough to follow most of the existing advice.

@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
I feel that, Logan. I wrestle with that as well. One of deeper parts of this conversation is that these factors are interactive. So sometimes you might come up a little short on on factor but crushing it in another can balance the whole video performance out. I wish I could make a 36 hour video that covered everything but nobody would watch it (Or maybe they would? Never tried it)
@JohnHPettigrewFujishooter67
Awesome advice as always Daniel,now I just need to put it into practice in my very small channel, I think I struggle more with execution than anything else. Thanks for sharing.
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
Yeah that's a big one. I can typically look at a video and figure out which combination of these 7 were the reason that video either crushed it, or didn't do very well. That's what helps me create stronger content down the line. Like this video for instance? It won't do very well on my channel because it was something I promised the community I'd make but I'm well aware it'll get squashed by competition. Lots of creators have talked about how to make videos that work on RU-vid. Including me.

The one thing that immediately strikes me is that you recommend not making videos that have a lot of competition, or that people haven't seen already in different variations and from different creators. While I agree with everything you said and watched the entire video, all the information in it can be found in other videos on similar channels. I have to say that you present it very well however. It's much harder to make successful videos that address all your points than it seems. I'm taking away that being more intentional on who to target might be the most important one of them all. Thanks for a good video.
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
I absolutely agree with you. In fact, following my own advice? This video has WAY too much competition to do very well on RU-vid. But I knew that going in. I don't expect it to do that well. What you may or may not know is that was a video I set up from a previous video and it needed to be in my catalog to satisfy previous questions that have been asked and to set up future videos I'm going to make where I'll mention the 7 fundamental factors that decide a video's fate. When people ask, "Wait, what do you mean by the 7 factors?" This video will be there ready to answer all of those questions. There is more to building successful RU-vid channels than making individual videos. It's really more about how your content all works together (another future video)

Some factors are more or less irrelevant to the content that I create, but others will definitely help me. Nicely explained!
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
Absolutely. For instance, folks who make a lot of Shorts didn't have to worry about thumbnails up to this point (That's changing rapidly). It's different for various niches but I do think I can typically explain why any video either succeeded or failed with some combination of these 7 factors
@bletheringfool
@bletheringfool Год назад
Fantastic advice as ever. The thing I always struggle with is, on a podcast channel I'm working on, doing the thumbnail and titles. We review stupid movies so it is much easier if you are doing videos about practical stuff such as photography to think of a useful title or images to use. But finding out what makes people click on a review of a dumb shark movie, for example, now that's tricky.
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
That's why I always start with title first. If you have your title dialed in, the thumbnail becomes infinitely easier because you can begin to visualize it. For instance; If you started with a movie topic, let's say The Toxic Avenger. Then you developed some form of a compelling title to trigger the viewer; "Is Toxic Avenger the WORST Movie Ever Made?" Now you have an idea that you can run with. Could be using a scene capture of the Toxic Avenger looking shocked and overlaying like a really low Rotten Tomatoes or IMDb score.

Super helpful video, Daniel.Thank you! Hope you are well! Finally having Spring in New England! For now, lol! 😉 Wondering if making shorts on a few topics is ok, or does it mess up the analytics to drive sustainability on a channel? We want to add more music via shorts. Our Ozzy/Lita short has been doing well! Definitely do not want to attempt 2 different channels while trying to figure this all out! 😊
@liveinagreenhouse
@liveinagreenhouse Год назад
I have a similar/related question. Would appreciate it if you could do a video with your thoughts on strategies to use shorts with long-form videos (and the analytics to use to support/measure effectiveness). I publish a long video every Sunday and a short every Wednesday. The short is a 'before and after' about a tiny segment of the bigger project covered in a long video. I like the response I'm getting to the shorts so I think I'll continue doing them. I don't have a members only page yet, so I'm wondering if instead of publishing the shorts, instead I use them as my members only content. Admit that I don't understand analytics very well so I don't even know what data to use to make these decisions. (p.s. of the hundreds or thousands of channels providing YT advice I subscribe to only 2 and yours is one of them because I feel like you really care about your viewers success and don't pad your time with fluff. Thank you)
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
I personally believe content is content. Regardless of length, your videos should serve the value proposition of your channel. Don't make unrelated Shorts just because you think it will drive views. Try to drive TARGETED views from the people who would enjoy all of your content.

Such a good video and breakdown on what makes a "GOOD" video a "GOOD" video. I was shocked at some of the key points, as I listen to a TON of these types of videos, and I think Daniel had some really good different points or takes. I am not affraid to try something new, however I am terrible at following up with those results and comparing the analytics to see if it was a good test or not. Additionally, I struggle A LOT with making the "SAME" content as other creators in my niche, unintentionally. The topics are limited and HOT when they are relevant, so it happens a lot. I need to try and think about how I can mix it up or change the way I present the content so its not so similar. And lastly, Packaging. My thumbnails are "GOOD" but they could better represent the video at hand, and the title and image combo needs to work together. For me I send to sturggle with giving TOO MUCH information, instead of triggering curiousity or emotion. Which I see compeitors ARE doing and its working.
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
Same. It's such a deeper conversation than I can cover in a single video. The idea here being I hope videos like this get creators thinking. I appreciate you saying how making the thumbnail ahead of time is not always right. I hear all over that you should make the title and make the thumbnail before you ever film anything. I am hoping to film a few projects this spring and post a handful of videos but when your thumbnail would include your final completed project it is impossible to make the thumbnail before any filming happens. I plan to try and post 4-5 videos at launch all with similar topics (woodworking) to give the algorithm something to serve up my target audience to but all with a slightly different style. Then see what style seems to resonate with the target audience and replicate that in future videos.
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
There are definitely situations like the one you mentioned and also where creators tend to have more of a vlogging style of filming where things happen during the capturing of the video and it changes the focus or storyline of what that video might turn out to be. So I try to be careful about making universal statements. There is no such a thing on RU-vid.
@blingauntie
@blingauntie Год назад
Very true for live streaming re: thumbnails! We begin at A and have thumbnail for A but end up at E, to realize 70% of the stream was about E.
@BaerbelBorn
@BaerbelBorn Год назад
@@blingauntie again, here is also a problem coming up, if you create something during stream you cannot show it in a thumbnail befor the stream starts. But you can change the thumb after stream for people who watch later, what is a huge advantage on YT. many views on my streams coming after days...
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
The biggest mistake I see Creators make for live streams is that they make it all about "We're LIVE!" instead of focusing on how best to represent the conversation. Content is content, whether it's edited videos, live streams, Shorts, Stories, Community tab posts... they all need to serve the value proposition of the channel and compel the viewer to engage. @Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
I haven't seen chapters hurt my watch time or any of the creators I work with. I just try to make sure that I only use chapters when they make a ton of sense. This video, for instance. I'll probably add chapters to delineate the 7 factors and make it easy for the viewer to jump to something they feel like is important or that they are less familiar with and want to learn about.

@@Daniel_Batal Hi Daniel. Of all the YT educational videos I've seen.. and I've just tried doing a quick search... 'how to title timestamps on youtube' There seems to be a gap... for a VOD 😻 Lots of doing timestamps but not the actual titles.. Tuned for Google search. I've thought about this for a while.. as far as I can figure out.. Each timestamp need's to actually say it's going to solve/answer the problem/question.. Rather than creating intrigue.. I've been filming a complete service/repair of a popular wind turbine.. I found a gap. Should I do one epic video with timestamps? 1 1/2~ hours? or... Videos of each stage and put in chronological order in a Playlist.. or... do the big real-time ish video with timestamps and refilm the key stage's so I don't get into trouble with YT. BTW.. you said in another comment this video may not do well.. but it will be a compliment to another.. I see this video you have just done as a resource to refocus on the fundamentals.. Which I will be watching again.. I hope this helps. Regards Mark.

I've learned to alternate between the topics I cover on my channel. I do explained videos on my favourite books, offer writing advice, or talk about reading in general. All of my topics relate loosely, but I've found my Twilight videos do the best. Now, if I only talked about Twilight, I'd get bored. My writing advice videos or Harry Potter videos don't do as well, but my audience in those areas is growing slowly but surely. As long as I post a Twilight video every third video or so, that seems to be a good balance both for myself creatively and channel wise. Timing definitely plays a role too, as I just happened to start my channel during "the Twilight Renaissance," so no doubt that's helped. Twilight videos also have less competition than Harry Potter videos. All of your points have been accurate for my channel so far.

Depends on the situation. Dynamic mics with be less 'breathier" than condenser mics. Using expanders & noise gates can do a good job of quieting down a vocal in between sentences. I still have to pull breaths out manually in places because I'm from New England. We're full of hot air.

If a mic is directly in front of you then it needs to be a hand span away or a bit more.. this is in a setting where there are other people with mics. I'm guessing you are recording on your own.. So put the mic so it is at about 45 degrees to your head 6 inches away.. pointing a few inches in front of your mouth.. or if it's a shotgun mic from above pointing at the chest.. Remember not to point the mic at something that is making noise.. and hang teeshirts etc.. on hangers around the room to stop echo, this is a game of trial and error.. Going to the next level.. Computers.. need to be in soundproof boxes or using long leads put in another room.. Look at gaming headsets.. the mic is positioned to the side of the mouth. Open cell foam (kitchen foam scourer), fake fur with an open weave base.. can stop wind noise.. look at blimps used for outdoor recording.. If there is popping from saying words with the letter P then a pencil held upright directly in front of the mic makes a big difference.. ( I've seen them held on with an elastic band) part of the reason for the metal cage on stage mics.. Microphones are a really big subject.. How they make one person sound can be very different to another.. and how you hear yourself and a recording are very different.. that's why people don't like their own voice. What the mic is connected to can make it radically change.. The impedance and wave forms at certain frequencies etc.. A lot of singers bring their own mics to recording studios because it gives the exact sound.. just like musicians will bring their own guitars etc. There is one You Tuber who actually has the mic hidden under his hair on his forehead. Hope this helps.

I can understand how an idea like topic could be applied to an educational/instructional or review channel. How might it be applied to an animation channel that tries to tell creative stories through animation? Do you think that there is much hope for an animation channel to do well on youtube seeing how long it can take to create one video, realistically 3 or 4 weeks? I know there are a few that do well but they usually seem to be more like animated vlogs describing everyday life anecdotes which I don't personally find interesting.
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
I absolutely do. The point I was making when I used the analogy to a tailor making a suit is that Creators need to really understand who they're making content for and why those viewers would want to watch in the first place. Every successful animated movie or television series has a deep understanding of who they're trying to reach and what would keep those viewers watching. That's where I would put a lot of my effort if I were making animated storytelling videos. The psychographics of my target audience.

Hi Daniel. Please make a video about RU-vid “throttling” a channel, internal P ratings and how THAT effects your video’s success. I have a friend that’s a RU-vidr and she got an email from RU-vid that her channel is being throttled. She wrote them because it became obvious when a vid published and analytics showed strong potential to be viral (high CTR, high watch time, tons of likes and interaction with comments), then a switch-like RU-vid action makes it all stop after 48 hours of posting. In addition, her CPM is $20 but her RPM is $2.68. Last year for videos that performed worse she was also paid $20 CPM but got $11 RPM. RU-vid gives her no explanation. After 12 emails, they just said her channel is being throttled. It’s important for RU-vidrs to understand that you can have great SEO, an amazing video and if YT tags you with a lower rating within your genre, the algorithm, DOES AND WILL suppress your content. It seems once they have channels they are happy with, and are commercial friendly in their first tier of suggestions, additional channels or videos in the same genre are more of an annoyance. There is a definite glass ceiling on RU-vid that I would love you to talk about!
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
"Throttling" does not exist on RU-vid. I know because I'm good friends with the team that builds the recommendations systems. I don't know what email she might be referring to...? There are some limited reach situations based upon topic, explicit nature of the video, controversial subjects & misinformation as well as limited ads run under YPP based on similar circumstances but no such "Throttling" terminology exists.

I've been more focused on gaining a following on RU-vid recently, still quite a small channel, I never really took it seriously before, but now that I can create art and stuff I've been able to create far more content and stuff for videos. My predicament is quantity, I'm afraid of sharing Too many videos daily, if that's a problem, and the other one is establishing a variety of different content, but keeping certain things consistent on my channel. I mostly share my artwork as Shorts videos now in a variety, and longer gaming videos, and I also share my music and stuff like that. I'm just unsure if I am upsetting the algorithm by sharing so much of a variety of stuff, or if I should create separate channels for every niche that I come up with.

I started a new page dedicated to astrophotography, (Mile High Astrophotography)but have not posted yet. I have 2 questions. I was told to create about 150 videos before posting anything so I can schedule it out and have consistent content. Don't know how I feel about that strategy. Second question is ,can I just re title my existing page for drums only? I was told RU-vid doesn't like when you do that. FYI i barely have 200 subs so I feel I have room to switch stuff up. Both subjects get decent attention, which is why I wanted to separate the channels. Thanks Daniel!
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
1) Ignore whoever told you that 150 video thing. Just start making and publishing videos. 2) Depends on your channel size. If you've got tens of thousands of community members and millions of views with lots of hours of watch-time, pivoting a channel is harder because you've already trained RU-vid who your target audience is based upon previous high performing content. Small channel? No worries. Just make great content that starts getting focused on that particular target audience, change the title and put the other content on a new channel.

Guilty as charged to several of the mentioned advices! And I think what probably sinks my channel the most is the competition. The actual 306 subscribers, seem to more or less hang on to it, I know some people really like what I am doing, but I just don´t reach any bigger crowds. I start to feel it is meaningless. Lately I believe my videos are slightly more engaging than before. And still, every week it´s declining, and I mean under a hundred views? I learned so much from this. I will probably continue, cause I have that kind of creativity. But I must be realistic. My channel is not gonna take off. Bingo. My biggest advice to Creators is that what makes a thumbnail great is if it is EFFECTIVE. I've made enough successful content that people know my face so putting it in a thumbnail makes sense at the moment. But, sometimes when a person watches your video and they're expecting some kind of value out of it, like, wanting to become successful on RU-vid and then all of a sudden you find out the creator that created that video if they're charging so much that a person can't afford they lose interest very fast. But, another thing it can affect his mental health. A long time ago I was trying to put two and two together to become successful on RU-vid but they couldn't afford the prices that some of these people charge for their courses caused very bad depression for me. I had to literally get out of creating any kind of videos because I became clinically depressed. So now on my channel I just create what I want when I want and I don't even worry about how the channels doing because years from now I'm going to come back and watch that content for myself. I already know that I'm not going to become successful on RU-vid because the market is so saturated with people that want to become successful on RU-vid that a lot of people don't become successful. And I know RU-vid creator the committed suicide just because their channel was not going anywhere. So, a lot of things that your suggestion are very good and a lot of people get a lot of value out of it but Tim Schmoyer also has a lot of good content look for a smaller RU-vidr they charge way too much for their product. I tried one of his courses just on how to make my RU-vid channel better but it didn't work. So, this is a result of what RU-vid can actually do to people because it is possible to become clinically depressed because of something that you can't control and too many RU-vid creators a lot of the goals cannot be reached. A lot of people look up to RU-vidrs that already are successful and strive to be like that RU-vidr but they can't reach that level of success and it makes you just want to give up. You should do a RU-vid video about something like this because a lot of people look up to these big RU-vidrs and very few can reach their success.

@@Daniel_Batal I just try not to think about it to much. Don't get me wrong, I think that your information you share is very valuable. But, unfortunately it seems like this information is out of reach for me, and a lot of RU-vidrs. I watched a video of Roberto Blake the other day and he mentioned that a lot of Big RU-vidrs are successful RU-vidrs because they have already been exposed to it by being someones employee for a big RU-vidr, now I know that my thoughts about this subject are not unsubstantiated. I knew, there was something about that. That is why they are so successful at RU-vid, and the ones that are like "Tim Schmoyer" Darrell Eves are so successful because they already know how it's done. I don't blame them for charging for it, but they charge so much for it, as to where a smaller RU-vidr can not afford it because they don't make the same big bucks that the bigger RU-vidrs make. I do understand that they have families to support, but man, like I said in my other post that, this can make someone clinically depressed, or in my friends situation, he exited his life because of it. If you made a course that someone could realistically could afford you would make a killing, and you would be way ahead of the other RU-vidrs in the game. People like Tim, and Darrell are good but unaffordable. At least I am glad that I seen the forest through the trees before I went completely broke. Thank you for your contribution to RU-vid brother.

Good morning. I have been following you since 2018 & I have incorporated some of the advice you promote on your channel. I feel I might be a little at a little lost. I do live videos for local bands and I want to try to promote them the best way I can. You being a musician yourself, do you have any ideas that could help me do a better job on my end getting their music out to more people? I have upgraded all of my equipment to real GoPros, 4 Blackmagic 4K cinema cameras, a Zoom Qn8 for the house sound, & a Tascam DRll that goes into the board. I am trying to save for a consultation, but I would like to have a few videos up using the new gear. I know you’re a busy man and can only do so much for free, but any help would go a long way. Thanks

I see that member badge next to your name, members always can ask deeper questions. Here's what I would focus on: Packaging. I've said for a while that the 'Make a music video' paradigm that worked back in the early days of MTV no longer works. Heck, even they've stopped doing it (for good reason. Nobody watched anymore). So, how do you take what you're tying to do for the bands you're working with and make it more desirable to RU-vid audiences? Packaging. I may not watch a video of some band I don't know playing a cover song no matter how many "FANTASTIC!!!!" preludes you use in the title. What I might watch is a video that had more story to it. Even if it were as simple as "Drummer Breaks His Stick Mid-Song and doesn't Skip A BEAT" Because now I want to see what happened, regardless of whether I like that song or not. Think about ways to engage the broadest target audience.

@@Daniel_Batal With the upgraded equipment, I was thinking about trying a new video and editing style. After what you said I think I'll do it. Thanks for the feedback.
