So the Beast is a physical manifestation of fear and feeds off people's anger, depression and desperation? Sounds apt, but I still think that he's a god from the ancient times. Kind of like Cernnous (or something like them).

I felt like the woodsman and granny whispers were very similar. They both did things for their own benefit but pretended like they were acting for the benefit of someone else. The woodsman carried what he thought was his daughters soul because he couldn't bear to let her go while granny whispers kept the young possessed girl around under the guise of helping her but she was actually just lonely.

The beast is real in the same way the Unknown is real.
@TheFangirlWatches

The same way that the ghosts in The Grudge are real too. Or, at least, that's how I like to rationalize it, lol.

Nice theory, it sounds like you are saying "the beast" is a sort of Tulpa. An entity that is created in the mind through meditation or intense feelings, this being can act independently, they are able to think, and have their own free will, emotions, and memories.
@TheFangirlWatches
@TheFangirlWatches 5 лет назад
I don't know Tulpa, but, YES, that is roughly what I was thinking. Something like The Ring or The Grudge where the ghost isn't real in one sense, but it can become very tangible to it's victims.
@uncroppedsoop
@uncroppedsoop 3 года назад
The premise of tulpae is much less dark, however. They are almost always seemingly intentional, and thus not often harmful
@mariamatilda9017
@mariamatilda9017 5 лет назад
When you say all that, it sounds so obvious! How I didn't see the same from the very beginning. Your theories make too much sense sometimes :) My initial idea after watching the series was that the Beast represents the feeling of being lost and unsafe. In the way that one can get lost in the twisted unclear world of one's own emotions, thoughts and experiences.
@TheFangirlWatches
@TheFangirlWatches 5 лет назад
That's pretty close to where I arrived! He seems to be like the ghosts in The Grudge - not real, but VERY real when they want to be or have someone to prey on!
@aniflowers1998
@aniflowers1998 5 лет назад
The idea that the Beast is the personification of crushing emotions is a verry good idea! Especially for someone like me who belives that the Unknown is a sort of "afterlive" place. But this is also the reason why I think that the Beast is indeed real, becouse he is able to be real and phisical in this world. I rather think that he neads to keep the lantern alive to exist phisically, but getting someone who is pained by crushing emotions to take care of the lantern for him could be something that makes him stronger. (Sorry, I'm really bad at explaining and my idea probably sounds like total nonsense xD )
@TheFangirlWatches
@TheFangirlWatches 5 лет назад
Oh no you're explaining it great! I guess I didn't word myself adequately enough, but I see the Beast more like The Ring or The Grudge where the ghost isn't real, but it IS very real and tangible to it's victims.
@spyro2002
@spyro2002 5 лет назад
Hmm... If you are saying that the beast is not "really real" but only like a ghostly presence, then how do you explain the flashing of the light over his nightmare fuel, clearly real looking body. I'm just saying.
@TheFangirlWatches
@TheFangirlWatches 5 лет назад
I suppose I took some ideas for granted (assuming they were in the cultural zeitgeist still, lol), BUT, I see The Beast a little more like The Ring or The Grudge. Those creatures weren't "real" in most senses, except when interacting around their victims, then they became VERY real, could attack, warp reality, etc. And they can't attack just anyone, you have to be on their turf, or watch their video - similar to how you have to take the lantern for the Beast to get his hands on you.
@spyro2002
@spyro2002 5 лет назад

small detail you got wrong, the beast is not always a shadow, it has a physical form that is shown in the last episode for a split second. You can search it up.
@flerphaderp7259
@flerphaderp7259 3 года назад
I know I’m like two years late to this, so bear with me. In psychology, there’s something known as shadow work, where you specifically get to know the darker parts of yourself - Your fear, your anger, your inner disgust - For the sake of accepting all parts of you, making peace with who you are, and not letting these parts take control because you refuse to acknowledge them. And mind you, not all shadow parts of the self are bad, but simply rejected, but for the sake of not making this super long I’m not going into that. The idea is understanding that your shadow isn’t *bad*. It’s simply a part of you that exists, and the more you hate and push it away, the more you hate and push away yourself. That’s why I think he can pick up shadows: He’s a physical representation of the individual shadows of everyone who lives in the woods.

I always thought the beast was based off of the German folklore of the Erlking (the German boogieman). There's a German poem turned into a ballad called "Erlkonig" that's typically sung by a bass which is why the beast sings the way he does. This is all my speculation so I could be wrong! But maybe there's a connection.

The beast is simply an evil spirit as described here, along with his own intentions. I do believe he still wants the lantern for himself, and who knows what power he'd be at with that. OTGW could continue off with the beast's return or a new villain.

Another question I have is why are Wirt and Greg shown in a Clarence episode (you can find the cameo online) when you compare the town from Clarence to the image of Wirt and Greg's town shown at the end of episode 10, almost exactly the same! Not ONLY THAT BUT! in an episode of Clarence called 'Tree of Life' there is a tree with 'faces' that causes Clarence to almost go insane and tired. Along with his friends, who abandon him after they get scar3d and tired as well!! WHAT!!

The beast also represents the ultimate enemy of all existence, the death of hope. Despair. Entropy. The lich. It literally uses the north wind to blow travelers of course and make them wander so astray they relent j to the night. As it did with wurt and greg when they were becoming endelwood trees. The beast, is surrender. Thus he is made up of the "corpses"(knowledge/fear of death) of past travelers souls.

This makes a lot of sense! I was thinking there’s got to be a reason Wert is having this dream, to teach him a lesson. Maybe the lesson is to not let negativity consume you and like Sara says, there is more than one way to look at things. He needs to face his fears and think more positively of his life and his self to overcome his inner beast and ask Sara out

In the Art of OTGW Pat states that they symbolise significant parts of each episode... he had an example of how the two brothers in a row boat represent the brother's harsh journey. What's your take on that?

Ik i'm super late and this has nothing to do with the video but I have had this theory on my mind for a LONG time now, but i think the reason that the dog beast in the first episode likes candy is bc Greg put a candy on the turtles back at the beginning of the episode and you see the same turtle when the dog spits it out. Anyway the beast reminds me more of a Wendigo, a beast that when it has found its ''prey'' it will stalk it and stop at nothing to get it. Kind of like the beast and how it goes so far just to get the boys, and also if u compare the beast and a Wendigo's appearance and behaviour/personality there is SUCH a resemblance!

What about when the beast claims wort and Greg gives himself up to the beast? The woodsman doesn't seem very close given Greg has started his transformation into an adlewood tree by the time the woodsman has arrived and the beast is shown interacting with a cup that he gives to Greg. Negative emotions make sence but at that point Greg still had hope. And as the woodsman says "I've fought you for the lantern before and I'll fight you again" implying this isn't the only time the beast has tried to switch who holds the lantern but surely any sooner than the series took place and the woodsman would still feel very negative emotions about his daughter

An interesting theory, but it doesn’t really fit when you think about it. If the beast really needed the woodsman, he wouldn’t be trying to take it from him. It’s clear the reason he says that the lantern holds their souls is so they don’t try to put it out, as the woodsman does at the end.

I feel like your theory is pretty spot on! I also have a theory on the beast in another comment where I believe the beast actually represents death as a whole and the forest as limbo in a sense. I don't know yet if you've already a theory on that, but I see a video of you theorizing what the forest is, so I should watch that. But just to add in my thoughts ahead of time; I believe the beast is represented as death itself, and lost 'travelers' as people who have given up the fight to stay alive and leave the forest, returning to the real world and living. And the lamp would represent their loved ones, grieving and remembering them like you said, keeping their spirits alive. Only eventually, they have to face the truth that...they're gone and want you to accept it as a new way to live. The beast nearly got Wart into his clutches, only for Greg to take his place. This symbolizes a lot! One, Wart has the will to survive and leave with his brother, and must save him from such a fate. I think this kind of represents how a lot of people who attempted suicide, will most likely think about the people that really need us in their lives. Two, Greg is fairly young, so he's the one in legitimate danger. So he could've ended up drowning to death if Wart didn't fight to save him and get them both out of the forest. And finally, Wart ends up feeling responsible for that happening to his brother in a sense. Both in the real world and in that world, due to involving him with his drama and getting them over the garden wall. I also believe the people living their represent either demons or angels, or even just guides for their chance to escape the forest in the first place. Which is why they're either helpful or harmful, like Adelaide was.

What if the beast and the unknown are just in Wirt’s head? We can see that after he falls in the river in chapter one at the final he wakes up at the same place and time. What if the beast is just his fears of his life being destroyed and he is only imagining all that stuff?
