People are making this question way more complicated than it needs to be. The woodsman in episode 7 says “Keep hearty in both body and spirit and you shall be safe from him.” If you are physically or mentally unhealthy, you can fall to the beast. Greg became unhealthy, most notably from the cold. That’s why he became an edelwood
@Trapezoid
@Trapezoid 3 года назад
And Greg also became *mentally* unhealthy because he was upset that he wasn't a good leader or brother.

Yeah this is my guess too, the kid was dying of hypothermia and the edelwood transformation was representative of his body giving out
@skystrife_gaming7949
@skystrife_gaming7949 5 лет назад
I’m pretty sure the Beast song in the tavern states that he takes the souls of those who have lost hope or get sick! Which is why the Beast has Gregory our in the cold while finding random items for him, Gregory then gets sick of hypothermia which is when he starts to get taken!

The woodsman said to stay healthy in mind and body and greg was never gonna give up hope so the beast just had to weaken his body

I'm always drawn back to the turtles. Why does the dog transform when it eats a turtle, but auntie whispers doesn't get all glowy eyed and freaked out. Why does she confuse the smell of the children for the turtles? And she acts like when 'she' eats the turtles, it helps them. We see a turtle crawl out of an Edelwood tree, does this mean that the turtles are made when a tree is created? So many questions!

I think the black turtles are the mistakes of the people turned into edelwood trees. I know I’m really late but please reply if you wish for me to elaborate

OR Tamago Ok so this may be a bit long and there may be some more evidence that I haven’t found *The dog became a monster when eating the turtles:* The dog is later seen to be the dog of Beatrice. Beatrice made a mistake, causing her family to be unable to care for the dog, harming the dog. The dog now goes crazy when confronting a mistake (eating a turtle) as he did in episode 1. *Auntie Whispers only gets mildly affected:* Auntie Whispers, as we see, eats the black turtles, but not the shell. She can take in parts of mistakes and doesn’t take the whole thing, as she has grown to know how to not freak out after a mistake but instead only be mildly affected (her appearance). *Greg was seemingly okay with the black turtles:* Greg had made a mistake by stealing the rock facts rock, but he always hid it. He didn’t tell anyone about the rock facts rock. However, Greg was scared in episode 1 and 7, the two episodes where he is confronted by things that were affected by black turtles. Maybe Greg is afraid that Old Lady Daniels would be affected by his mistake and she would get mad at Greg. I found this a bit interesting. *Wirts reaction to the turtles:* Though Wirt is always scared, the affect is interesting with the turtles. He was especially scared of the dog and Auntie Whispers. However, Wirt isn’t as scared of the dog. This is one of the episodes where Wirt blames Greg for everything, hinting that he’s trying to hide his mistakes. In episode 7, Wirt becomes more worried and you can see that he is trying to help Greg a lot more, maybe fearing that he may loose Greg after loosing Beatrice. Wirt is beginning to realize that his mistakes are affecting himself. *The dogs eyes after eating the turtles:* The dogs eyes in episode 1 after eating the turtles resemble the beasts eyes in episode 10. This one is pretty simple. That is pretty much what I remember right now, but I may add on if I find anything more later and if you find any other connections please tell me!

This is a really intresting theory, but there's one thing i can't really fit into it... if the woodsman's daughter died, then how does she come back alive at the end of the final episode? Was her soul released when the lantern went out or was it newer in the lantern in the first place?
@pugmcmuffins9282
@pugmcmuffins9282 7 лет назад
TheMightyMeatball it was never there in the first place. it is explained in the graphic novel that her father told her not to go into the woods. I believe she heard the beast singing and became curious so she went anyway where she saw the beast and screamed dropping her cloak. Her father heard her from the house and ran into the woods. As he ran in, she had been running out and got into the house. They missed each other completely and the beast lied saying he had taken her soul but was willing to make a deal and that he could put her soul into the lantern if he could keep it glowing. In his grief, he never returned home until the end of the show for fear of going into an empty home without his daughter while she was so scared she didn't dare leave and waited for her father.

You got suckered into creative progression which diminished, not enhanced the story. Some background, the original "Tome of the Unknown" is more like a crazy dream than what the story became. The graphic novel after takes some ideas TOO far, and invariably leads to absurdities. Like the daughter stayed in the house her whole life? Never confronted by the Beast, and wondering who that aimless wandering oaf was carrying a lantern wearing her father's stuff? The creator is also a creative author of Adventure Time, a great series that started out small and went off on quite the successful tangent where the world was post apocalyptic and etc. Let's stop the story at "Over the Garden Wall" the film, where it is simple, and best. Besides, other magical creations are tied to the Beast. The skeletons fall lifeless still after the Beast is destroyed. Just as an example. So why should the woodsman's daughter be so mundane?
@lieutenantjacobin
@lieutenantjacobin 5 лет назад
In the comics it explains how she came back while the woodsman was away and she was never in the lantern. So when she sees him after opening the door, she thinks that he came back finally. And he did
@kailahsanner7098

This is really good but at the end before the lantern was blown out they indicated that it was in fact the beasts soul inside the lantern. The woods man had to collect oil that he then would have to feed the lantern and who feeds off of the oil? The beast. Who also aitted to already having his daughters soul. The beast lied to the woodsman about his daughters soul being in the lantern so he would keep feeding it as he tried to do the same to wart and Greg.

The beast can still physically attack because of his wood body, and the woodsman lost in the fight. So, he wouldn’t need to get physical because it would waste energy. He’s a being from probably before time so he’s had plenty of years to perfect psychological manipulation, so his ember could burn longer as his stock of souls kept going up. Hence why he only exhausted the woodsman and didn’t kill him. He needed someone to continue the job as plan b in case Wirt didn’t go through with the deal.

Wait, so do you agree with the thing that The Beast was the Woodsman's daughter that got transformed with the black turtles? Because we see that the black turtles do have transformative properties and The Beast and "The Beast" at the beginning have the same colored eyes, I'm really interested to hear your thoughts
@TheFangirlWatches
@TheFangirlWatches 7 лет назад
I actually haven't heard that theory before (I try really hard to stay away from other theories until I know I'm done talking about something, otherwise it's impossible not to get influenced by what other people said). But, I think the turtle issue is a possibility, but it's not quite strong enough for me. That would suggest that the turtles are really the Beast, and he would really only need to posses a new person if the lantern went out - which would make the Edelwood trees less significant to the Beast's needs over just holding people captive to take over. We know he's not doing that because we see the Woodsman grinding up the trees. And, why not have a dozen different Beast's if the turtles can posses humans like that? What was the demon-form of the dog living off of, since it didn't appear to be the lantern? No, the turtles have a connection to the Beast, but I don't think they create him.
@IDNeon357
@IDNeon357 7 лет назад
The Beast doesn't really need anything, that's another fallacy. The Beast is more like the Devil and the trees are just ONE perversion that manifests the Beast. Notice how perverted it is, these things that should be beautiful and living are really dead and tragic, and the cursed spell the woodsman is under causes them to end in a fire. Ground down for their oil, to fuel a lantern, that surely has no real power or else the Beast would not have given it so perversely to an old man to keep care of.

But in the episode 7, doesn’t the woodsman say “lose hope, or fall ill and you will fall into the hands of the beast.” Or smth like that?

This is probably obviously but maybe the subject of "Lost Souls" is related to the piece of Egyptian mythology where if someone's heart in the afterlife weighs more than the feather of Mahtt then that person's spirit seises to Exist!

We're told that those who give up turn into Edelwood, but it seems to be implied that if /your body/ gives out it works too? So Wirt started turning into Edelwood because he had given in to despair and given up on going home and on life in general while Greg started becoming an Edelwood himself because he physically couldn't keep going. Bonus : I've seen people compare the Edelwood trees to the forest of suicide from Dante's Inferno but I haven't read it so I can't tell you how accurate it might be. Something about people who killed themselves becoming trees that bleed actual blood in hell?

what's my question is .... what if it is in Warts mind? and yes, they are dying... but there is no way for him to see what is and Greg's mine because Greg is an adolescent. Greg probably had something going through his own mind or wouldn't understand truly what's happening... or was possibly knocked unconscious. What if Greg is simply acting has Warts conscience? trying to rationalize a terrifying event? what if in the in the meantime he's trying to concoct a way that he can survive and have a happy life? sort of like in An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

I have a theory that the happy ending never happened. I don’t believe that Greg turned into an edelwood, but I think that the way the unknown works would affect it. I think the unknown works where if you go to an area that no one has been before, that area didn’t exist before and you are creating it with it being filled with your interests (this was influenced by something Patrick McHale said). Maybe when Wirt and Greg went into the dark they were going to a place no one had gone before, and they also had an interest in getting home, causing that part to be created. The “real world” still works the same as the unknown (not coughing while drowning, having the frog be physically affected when it shouldn’t as the unknown is most likely purgatory, etc). Wirt also had an interest in getting Sara to fall in love with him, shown at the end of the show. Greg had an interest of bringing his rock facts rock back to Mrs. Daniels, which he does. There is a lot more I have to this theory but this is an overview
