I think the unknown is a place of no time period. It’s a place where people wait for death unknowingly. That’s why you see many characters from different time periods, not just the 1800s. At the end, after wirt defeats the beast, the rest of the characters wake up and return to their time period. Endicott is dead in Wirt’s time period. But alive in his time period. Does that make sense? Idk

Don't they have blurred edges throughout the whole part of the series that take place in the unknown?

Wirt also got his name by the creators because of his worrying attitude, taking on the phrase 'Worry-wart'. Just wanted to point it out.

Ever notice how the Beast and the Queen Of The Clouds are the only ones to call Greg Gregory? Old lady Daniels says Gregory too now that I think about it.

I think the creators were inspired by Dante's Inferno and The Seven Rings of Paradise for this mini series. I've seen other video on Over the Garden Wall and how they literally almost mirror the events in Dante's Inferno. So it would make sense for the beginning of the Unknown is a Purgatory like area.

Over the Garden Wall is one of the shows that got me into theorizing. I loved mysteries, I loved writing, so... yeah, it seemed so great, and it is!!

Did anyone else notice that in the intro it showed all the people in the bar were dolls on the intro, and the frog boat was a wind up toy, and that Beatrice was sitting with the dog that eventually turned into the beast dog? Weird, huh?

I think, when they fell into the pond, they went through a time portal. In the episode "into the unknown" when wirt is sitting behind a gravestone, It says 'Quincy Endicott' meaning that it actually happened. he needed to learn a lesson, the Beast thinks it's a game.

i dont think youll ever see this but something i just realized is that when they to refer to Endicott's story in the beginning the frog songs the line "Our long bygone burdens, mere echoes of the spring" which refer to what i think might be Endicott's guilt and how he still hears/sees her

Wirt also definitely sounds like Wart, which was King Arthur’s name in the Disney movie ‘The Sword and the Stone’ which probably was one of the inspirations for this entire fantastical adventure. Both great works!

I think the unknown is not the afterlife or the present life. It’s the space between them. I think that everyone in the unknown got there through a near death experience that their real world body is still experiencing in the time which they come from, except that current experience is frozen as they wander the unknown. This would explain why the people are dressed like they’re from the 1800’s. Maybe their near death experience happened in that time period. The unknown isn’t a place where you die, it’s a place where you stay until you choose to live or die. As Wirt slowly loses hope he begins dying and is saved by Greg’s dreams of hope, which the beast enters to let him survive. Overtime Wirt and Greg almost forget about going home, and there are numerous times that Wirt thinks about just staying. Maybe everyone else in the unknown has forgotten about going home and decided to stay, further trapping them on this plane of existence which is a shadow of our world. As soon as they succumb to defeat, that is how they die.

Am I the only one who picked up on this? In Greg's dream he gets tuba'ed into the gate which lets in the old North Wind. This also triggered the beginning of freezing snow temperatures in the waking version of the unknown. North wind = winds from the arctic. Can generate those weather conditions around Haloween time easy. I'm at a pretty southern latitude and we got 20 degree nights coming this week.

PART TWO?!?! PART TWO?!?!?! Oh wait there it is... :P

I finished the show a few days ago. Well, here is my interpretation for the show! So, first i will talk about the nameless place they are in aka over the garden wall aka the "unknown", a lot of people had a clinical death and came back, i think this is what happened. Greg and wirt had a clinical death and they came back. The place is actually the thing we like to call " after you die" it's not heaven or hell, it's just the place after you die or at least the place between death and life. Now i want to talk about the real "unknown" and his meaning. let's look closely, episode 9 called "into the unknown" this is the episode of the flash back here we actually see them close to get out of this place, but here is the catch, all this time we thought "the unknown" was the place they were in BUT the last episode called "the unknown" you understand what i want to say? The real unknown is actually life! In the last episode called "the unknown" we actually see them come back to life or to the *real* unknown! Now let's talk about the beast, and why it's important to understand that the unknown was life... The Beast symbols a lot of things, depression, giving up, death of hope, surrender and more, but as i see it the most important thing she symbolise is actually "fear" but not the fear to die but the fear to live, let's look closely to the 9 episode. Wirt think his life were ruind and he have no chance with sara, he runs over the garden wall and get hit by a bus to a pool. So he fear to come back to life and you know.. live. face the real world and the real problems. The beast want to keep them there because she wants them to die and use their soul as fuel but look at that, only when they defeat the beast they can go home, come to the scariest place ever, life and this is my interpretation of over the garden wall! One more thing, the woods man is actually Haunted by the beast and if it's fear it's possible that he fears to confront his daughter death and only when he kills the beast he can truly exept it... Although we see his daughter alive ( i don't know how) and if the beast is fear and his daughter was alive all along so it's also make sense, fear want him to fuel the lantern and the way he kill him has by bravory and "confront" fear and win because his bravory... So yea, this is how i see the show.
