▬▬▬▬ Information ▬▬▬▬
House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal for HBO. It is a prequel to the television series Game of Thrones (2011-2019) and is based on Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood. Set two hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones the series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to the Targaryen civil war, known as the "Dance of the Dragons", and the war itself. House of the Dragon received a straight-to-series order in October 2019 with casting beginning in July 2020 and principal photography beginning in April 2021 in the United Kingdom. The first season of the series is scheduled to premiere in 2022 and will consist of ten episodes.

That's not exactly how I read it. IMO it's there to further characterize Helaena as severely mentally impaired and clueless about the important events happening around her. That line could work well as a sour, sarcastic joke about her husband cheating on her from a witty character, but given everything else we know about Helaena, what she said implies she truly thinks they're looking for Aegon because they're playing hide and seek and he might really be hiding from them under her blankets.

Little nitpick, but I don't think the Helaena line was supposed to be implying that Aegon is hiding or she's weird. I think she's just making a little sarcastic joke out of the fact that her "husband" never sleeps with her because he's off having affairs. "Go ahead and look. Bed's been made since last night. He's not trying to mess the sheets up." Also builds off of the blatant sexism and hypocrisy of the Green faction.
@alanpennie

This is certainly true. But I think the suggestion that he's hiding under the covers is also a nod towards the idea that Aemon is immature, which is also presumably the reason that his younger brother has been informed of the impending coup while he hasn't.

I agree with you. Comes across as just some dry sarcasm to me like looking beneath the sheets would be just as much as a waste of time as even bothering her about his whereabouts. As in even an idiot would know the last place you would find Aegon is his wife’s bed.

@Longshanks1690
@Longshanks1690 2 месяца назад
The show had such a clear setup for Criston’s character arc in that episode. He tells Rhaenyra that people won’t have a choice but to accept her, so I thought that was a clear foreshadowing for it being his choice that drives the kingdom to civil war, that his actions are such a key part of Aegon’s coronation that this moment will be looked on with irony given he chooses to prevent her from being Queen, I thought he would convince the unsure members of the Green Council with a speech - and kill Beesbury for not budging - and personally convince Aegon he needs to be King, which is why Aegon would later make him Hand because he trusts him. But no, Criston has no role in that episode and accidents Beesbury to death instead, so why he was the one to crown Aegon actually makes no sense given he had no role in symbolically crowning him. Just such a waste of potential as now Criston has no point or purpose in the story, that robbed him of any weight he has and now he’s just there until he dies.

I feel like the only way to reconcile fire and blood with Arianne's story (in universe, obviously it was a George's garden situation) is that there must be some famous play called the kingmaker which centred Criston Cole as the main character and it permeated pop culture so much that all people learn about that time period was that play and maybe a song about the Cargylle twins. A bit like how historians always have to point out that Shakespeare was dramatising history and that things were actually more complicated than as presented. So like, when characters are referencing the kingmaker, they really mean the character from the play who's colouring how the people see that history. If I had to guess, the play would have had to be written at a time when the rise of commonborn people was being championed. The only era in which that would politically make sense would be during Egg's reign, so who knows, maybe Tanselle too tall helps Dunk get that hand of the king/lord commander if the kingsgaurd position?
@MaegorExposition
@MaegorExposition 2 месяца назад
If I had to hazard a guess, I would guess that Aemond’s “Old Whore” line is spoken around the same time he gave his account on the Eye-for-a-Dragon incident. It would make sense since we seem to get the most introspection from Aemond at this supercharged moment, so it makes sense this would be the time a Maester would be the most interested in. If this is the case, we then have Aemond in immediate proximity to Helena (while Aegon 2 is AWOL (as usual)), who speaks her only line of the story. This is especially interesting if the theory that Aemond is the father of Helena’s children is true. Food for thought.

Another good breakdown!! I do believe that nearly everyone in the realm knew good and well who Aegon I’s chosen heir was. Just look at everyone’s reaction when Aenys illegally named Aegon prince of Dragonstone. The small folk and some minor lords didn’t have the authority to grant prince Maegor that title. Only one person alive at any given time has that authority. That one person is the lord or lady of Dragonstone. Which was Aegon I at that time. And even if some small folk and minor lords did take it upon themselves to just start calling Maegor prince of Dragonstone just out of nowhere, Aegon I still had like 20 years to change it to Aenys. Aegon I chose to leave Maegor with that title!! And I agree that Aenys had to scramble to convince Maegor to share the throne with him. The only reason Maegor agreed was b/c Aenys was actually one of the very few people Maegor truly did love!!

I wouldn’t necessarily call Cristin’s shift in importance between AFFC and Fire and Blood a retcon. As biased as Gyldane’s history is, it’s still a history, backed up by years of excruciating research and fact checking on his part. However, his perspective on Criston Cole is influenced by more than a century and a half of embellishment and a firmly established contemporary narrative about the dance. Cole’s role as “the kingmaker” has been reinforced in tavern songs, court poems and dozens of other pieces of media created by largely illiterate peasants who’ve passed the story down through song. As such, when we get a look at Arianne’s perspective in AFFC, we’re seeing her perspective of Criston Cole the character, not Criston Cole the historical figure. I don’t doubt that Arianne had a history education herself, but her education wouldn’t be nearly as thorough as an Archmaester of the Citadel. Historical embellishment and contemporary narratives are never 100% accurate to the true history even in the real world.
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin 2 месяца назад
The chapter is from Arys' perspective, not Arianne, and he's a Kingsguard. He's going to know Cole's history better than most considering they specifically have a White Book with Cole's biography in it. Not to mention, Arianne and Oakheart seem to be in agreement on who he was.
@thedemonhater7748
@thedemonhater7748 2 месяца назад
@@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin you’re right; I mix those two up whenever I think back to their chapters. Anyways, I don’t get the sense that Oakheart and Arianne’s understanding of history really goes beyond a pop understanding of the subject. Yeah, they have access to more resources than the average small folk, but they’re not historians. Thats not to mention that the white books aren’t exactly detailed biographies either; they’re chronicles of achievements for kingsguard. Jaime’s page doesn’t include a nuanced explanation of why he killed Aerys- only that he did it, and that now he’s called kingslayer. Cole’s probably has an equally quick description going “convinced his grace Aegon Targaryen, Second of his name, to take up arms and defend the rights of him and his brothers against the Princess Rhaenyra. Thereafter known as the kingmaker.” And I would just stress again that we’re dealing with people living centuries after these events have happened. Stories change, are embellished, and retold over and over again. I totally get your reading but I think keeping ideas like this in mind are really important. I’m actually studying to be a historian right now, and I had to spend a lot of time on my final paper last semester analyzing sources and the ways historians select narratives to be carried on while diminishing other perspectives. A lot, and I mean a LOT of our understanding of past history is based on maybe one or two historians’ perspectives being uncritically repeated by centuries of subsequent academics. That consensus can easily filter down to the public so that by the time scholars begin to reexamine the facts with more information later, the narrative becomes so baked into the popular understanding that it’s treated as established fact by most people. The people of Westeros have had centuries to tell and retell the story of the dance, and as Fire and Blood makes painfully clear, the people actually writing history don’t really interrogate the biases of their sources or critically engage with the writing on a deeper level. Whether Gyldane wants to admit it or not, his perspective is colored by centuries of narrative and bias, to the point where when he sees a historical figure like Criston Cole do basically *nothing* in the sources he still decides to repeat this guy’s cool nickname regardless. Anyways, sorry for the essay. This could all just be because GRRM changed his mind or whatever lmao

Cole's role may have received a villainous upgrade via Munkin's "many interviews and testimonies", focusing on portraying him as a Kingmaker, thus making a larger impact. Instead of blaming a powerful house like the Hightowers, or an institution like the Citdael, it concentrates the blame for the war on a lone White Cloak from a smaller house, supposedly too sexist and love-spurned to think things through.
@baswar

Tbf the thing about Cole's role being changed could be choked up to popular believe vs reality. People may have perceived Cole as the King maker even though he played a lesser role in truth. Like Jamie isn't exactly a scholar. Though Tyrion should know better, so it could be a retcon

I don't think anyone would gauge from the past whether a different ruler would be likely to go to war. One king might be peaceful and another might go to war for a small reason. People would make that judgment based on what they think about the current ruler, whether that be accurate or not.

So the hypocrisy of the greens is pretty blatant in this section, with the whole Rhaenyra-will-turn-the-Red-Keep-into-a-brothel thing, meanwhile Aegon is being Aegon. Why did Gyldayn write it this way? He could've omitted or rearranged to the order of stuff to make this way more subtle. Does he want the reader to dislike the greens - in which case, why not explicitly point out the hypocrisy? Or is this just GRRM dropping all subtlety?

To the point about the succession dispute not actually needing to end in war just because the other side has dragons, another example showing this is Maegor himself. He assumed the throne after Aenys' death, and while it did upset Aegon the Uncrowned and made him want to start a war over it, he had virtually no support for a long time. There might never even have been a war against Maegor, if not for various other factors unrelated to Aegon's dragon destabilizing Maegor's reign.

Was Lyonel Strong actually a lifelong green supporter? Sure, when Otto brough him onto the Small Council, he would've been his ally, but then the greens spent years insinuating that Lyonel's heir was having a treasonous affair with Rhaenyra, and that Lyonel's daughters were complicit. That could've been enough to turn Lyonel against Otto? (Personally, I like the theory that Otto and Alicent had Lyonel and Harwin kiiled. They gain the most from the Strongs' deaths - the Handship for Otto - they are conspicuously absent from Gyldayn's list of potential culprits, and the timing - right after Aemond loses his eye - makes it seem like Lyonel failed to support Alicent in this incident, and that was why always-compromising Viserys refused all of Alicent's demands, so Alicent decided she needed rid of him?)
