This video is a real world tangible friendly reminder that running from basic human emotions never ever leads to good results. Time and time again we fall victim to the belief that suppressing our emotions is the answer when in reality we should be learning how to process and make peace with them - and sadly, we often can’t because we’re too busy running from our own shadows. Heck, if you want to bring it back around to videogames, it’s even a core plot element of Tekken 8. Jin literally has to face down and accept his inner demons to save the world. Even Jin Kazama is not safe from fear and angst, but what matters is that we never let it chain us. Jin Kazama stared into the abyss, but he didn’t allow it to consume him. Be like Jin Kazama.

As a fellow psychologist and tekken player I'm happy you're spreading this! I'm hearing the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Buddhist influences all over this video :)

Exposure works well for me. I also think of anxiety as a permanent debuff, like its - 10 to all of my stats etc. Keeping that in mind I just try to raise my base level, so even if I'm playing with that anxeity debuff, once my base stats are high enough I should still perform decently well etc. That mental approach also helps me.

anxiety is a debuff that's why you gotta build your defense stat against mental stressor so it doesn't impact you so much

Yes. Thank you for this. It sucks when anxiety becomes so severe it keeps you from doing what you love. Fuck all that. I’ll continue to throw hands with anxiety until I can play my damn game in peace lmao

I tried locals for the first time and was so anxious I could barely play. But I have a lot of social anxiety so I think it’s worse for me. I’m going to keep going back and see if it gets better. If not I’ll go see a professional. Ps. I was thinking using headphones during matches and avoiding caffeine might help! I don’t mind some anxiety but that much is overwhelming and disabling. I’ve been that way in social situations since I was a teenager and it’s never gone away (the only time it ever goes away is if I’m not around strangers). But if I can just calm down enough to make my hands work I think it’ll be fine! Thanks for the information! Very helpful

On point..my coach told me to create an alt account to only run rank for me to get use to the pressure and then apply it to my main account.

How’s that working for you?

@@TrickyEileen has numbed my anxiety when playing Rank on my Alt..like i could careless..but still get a slight bit of anxiety more on my main. Putting in reps 100% helps though.

I am so so relieved there are mental health professionals spreading information and helping people in the fgc specifically. I have literally thought of studying psych for this very purpose. Thank you.

I also want to add that I wish more content creators would touch on some of the philosophical ideas of what it means to play a fighting game. What it means to the individual. For some, and a small percentage, it’s very important to play a fighting game cause it’s their livelihood. For most of us the casual player, I think it’s important to remind ourselves we need to have fun with it rather than focusing too much on the win/loss/rank results. Even the very best in the world like Knee and Arslan still lose so why are we letting losing results get to us?

Beautiful video. I was fortunate enough to understand this over the years. To simply put yourself in the situation that causes that anxiety to simply get acclimated. You realize over time you’re still alive and everything is fine. Of course easier said than done, but at least it’s good to be aware and to practice that. As far as Tekken is concerned, I have more fun with the game and it’s actually my stress reliever. I play my fun character that everyone hates (Victor), but I frankly don’t care. I think he’s cool and I play the game for fun. I play the game to improve my technical understanding of the game, yo improve the technique needed to use a fight stick to pilot my character, and to simply appreciate what a great game Tekken is.

Hi Tricky, how do I even know I'm feeling anxious? I think I can identify it in a public speech situation, but not so sure while playing ranked. Might sound silly but I'm from environment where it's not good to talk about mental health and having problems is taboo (well there's improvement over the last decade but still need to educate) I guess "it depends" but maybe you could give me some boxes to check?
