I'm glad I helped. It takes some fearlessness to cut a big plant like that. In my case, I've had that plant for 12 years, and it's almost like a pet!

Thanks for the video. I have a Dracaena marginata that has been with me for 19 years (more still with my family) and I am so worried to cut it back. I will try now, since yours seemed to react well, let's hope mine will, too. Usually youtubers show cuttings in young plants, so it is reassuring to see a big and older tree be cut and it not dying.

@@walle5667 Wishing you luck with your plant. My plant has already reached the ceiling since this video and I'm afraid to cut it again since it's ten years older now. I had another plant that didn't grow after cutting it, but luckily a new sprout came out of the dirt after I cut it. So, if things don't work out, be patient.

I LOVED this video! I have a Dracaena that I rescued like 13 years ago that I never cut. I had no idea I could even do that. It's like 9-10 feet tall, has 5 stalks growing out of it and two of them are scraping my high ceiling. It started drooping and bending several years ago so I'd been tying it up with strings. Haha - how silly that seems now. Anyway, someone asked me once why I'd never cut it and I was like "Cut it off?! No!" thinking they meant just chopping off the top and throwing it away. But they explained cutting and I've been looking for a video ever since that shows start to finish, cutting to grown. Looks like I found it! So you made my day. I'm gonna go cut up my tree now :)

Kimberly Hubbard How did your tree end up after you cut it? And did you propagate the cut pieces as well for extra trees? (:

I have same issues. Mine is 20 yrs old, has fallen once, kinda injured, we cut it, tried to grow roots in water then planted it next to the old lonely stalk. (We weren't sure what were doing & just played it by ear then, lol) that stalk eventually dried up ,died Old leafless stalk came back Thank goodness & now again touching my ceiling, bending. We rotate it often to get it to straighten itself lol. I have since tied it with green stretchy plant material to a green plastic plant pole . All my indoor plants are between 10 to 20 yrs old which have names 😏. That tall one is Gabe, named after good friend and flower shop owner that gave it to us as house warming gift & welcoming of our first son's birth 😊 Other huge 1 in a wider palm like way, is Tarzan. We also have a Spidey named by my son which is of course a spider plant lol. My inherited Ficus tree got named Fern 😁. My bathroom peace lily never got named I think because it's not as old yet and names can't be forced! Lol lol. Ok I'm done sounding like a crazy person. I am a tree hugger like my dad tho. He talks to his big trees as he showers them with water gun in summer months. Sounds crazy, I Kno.... 😏

Glad you liked the video. Don't forget to be patient after cutting it. It could take a while to grow back. After this video, I cut back an older plant of the same species, and it took about 2 months to show signs of growth.

Just wanted to update you on what happened. So my rubber plant had about 5 stems that were about 4 feet tall and lost most of the leave at the bottom. I cut just one and stuck it into the same pot to see what happens. I week later I got the nerve and cut the other 3, leave 1 just in case it doesn't work. I put the other three in their own pot. Yesterday, I saw the the original cut steam is showing new life an several places along the stem. It worked! and will be busier. Thanks again!

So glad I came across this video. my plant is too tall and heavy and I have her tied to a pipe to support her weight, but she suddenly isn't doing well and now I know it's ok to cut her down. I did propagate a couple pieces of her in water about a month ago and they sprouted roots fairly quickly, so that, along with this video, have me ready to get to chopping. Thank you!

Thank you soo much..i have been following you. I adopted one that was bent and 6 feet, I managed to straightened it and it shot like a rocket in my house. then I had a wavy 9 foot stalk with babies coming out the sides of the nodes. Someone told me to take the parent, but it wasn't enough to save the plant. I realized I did it wrong. I have been waiting a year to figure this out and now I will replant and I still have the babies from the nodes. Thank you for sharing. Great job! Most of my plants are in my kitchen as well!!

THIS IS AWESOME!!!! Keep these videos coming!!! Please don't stop. Like your style and honesty! I just followed your advice. A neighbor left a TAAAALLL Dracaena (corn plant) by the dumpster. It has been there for 3 weeks. Today.. the garbage disposal guys said they really did not want to throw it out. It was half dry... some green leaves a bit on top and LOTS Of dead leaves. So I followed your video to the T! I am hopeful.

I'm glad my video helped. Since I made the video, I cut back another stem of the same type of plant, but it didn't work. The stem was much older, so I think that's why it didn't grow new nodes. But after a while, 3 new baby plants sprouted from the dirt around it. So it still survived.

This technique also worked with my plant. I just cut it in two same size pieces, the original piece with the roots all the leafes died, but after 2-3 weeks new leafes appeared, now after 2 months is showing 7 new small leafes going bigger every day. The terminal piece with no roots was just planted in a pot with black earth, I didn't apply any root promoter due to I couldnt find it. The first days the 5-6 bottom leafes died, but the 5 top leafes remain alive and vivid, but not growing at all, no new leafes either. Thanks again for your helpful video.

I'm a hobby-hopper myself and put in energy here and then there and then do nothing creative for months or years. It doesn't matter. Your video is great and well worth the effort! Since 8 years later people still enjoy the fruits of the work and energy you have put in back then. This is genius! Very inspiring. I found a yucca that was on deaths door in the street and brought it home (I’m a scavengeing skip rag and proud Womble). The yukka was pot bound and old and withered. I’ve probably been obsessively overewatering it to revive it and there’s little green nodes on it like in your video. The trunk is horrible! It’s got the fat look shop bough style at the base and above but then shoots you into a scrawny thin elephant trunk. Your vid has inspired me to saw it and grow a cutting to remove the ugly snakey trunk from the thick sturdy base! Have you thought about putting a black wax on the top of the yucca trunk to seal the sawn area? Many thanks Dave UK 🇬🇧

Thanks for the video.....my plant is now a tangled mess against my ceiling. The plant was at my ex-girlfriends house for a decade with not noticeable change.....moved it to my place and the thing is going through a growth spurt like I've never seen a plant do. The pot had two draceana in it.......those are now well above 7 foot tall.....and warped due to not being able to grow up anymore.....6 months ago both plants sprouted new ones out of the bottom....those are now approaching 3 1/2 feet. Not sure how the cuttings are going to go as the stalks are funky as hell.

It's always difficult to know what will happen when you cut a stalk. One of the stalks I cut never grew. I think it was too old.

I like that I didn't believe that the cuttings in water would grow but they did next I will give it a try because I have the same type of plant.
