Its the build up time here in the Top End of Australia, its time to get propagating and pruning in the garden. In this short easy to follow video I will show you how we propagate and prune our Draceana plants. It easy as!
Me too! I have never seen this work out except the top part in water. Tried propagating just like this, but unless you do this at a special time of year, or climate I am at a loss.
I have owned one of these for over 20 years and it’s now well over 8ft tall with three shoots off one stem. I had no idea I could just prune it back like that. It really, REALLY needs done but I’m terrified I’ll kill it. It was tiny when I first got it and I’ve had it longer than my kids! I guess I’ll just have to be brave and deal with it. I’m running out of room for it.
pokermel I did! I was so nervous. I cut 10 “sticks” and so far, 6 have rooted and all have small shoots forming from their tops. The other 4 aren’t totally dead yet either but I may have kept them in the wrong place with not enough light. Given time they may yet live. I left one 6ft stem on the original plant just in case and for the first time in 20+ years it has begun to sprout another branch. The cutting must have encouraged it.
Lashonda Love so far so good. Most of my sticks have up to three bumps forming at the tops which are new shoots starting to grow. They’re in a mini greenhouse outside now but not in constant direct sunlight so they’re well lit and warm. I’m checking them all the time because I’m worried I’ll kill them and I’ve had that plant longer than I’ve had my children. Haha
@@lashondalove_ I checked mine today and the stick that was cut in half is now brown when it was green a few days ago. I hope that doesn't mean I killed it. 😭
Thank you for this video. I'm in Southern Michigan, USA. I have a dracaena that is getting overgrown, your video is the clearest that I found on how to prune it. I was very nervous about cutting it back but as soon as the weather warms up I'm going to permanent based on your suggestions. thank you.
Very nice video! Very informative and hands on! Would love to see more on tropical plant care! I just moved to Florida so I’m very anxious to get started!
Exactly the information I hoped to find! Thank you for the tips; my plant is now a mere four inches from the ceiling, so is ready to become a group rather than one lonely, lanky fellow.
This is great! I have one of these and it got very leggy but I never thought that there was something to do about it :) Although it's scary to cut it up like that haha I might consider doing it. A before and after vid as suggested by others would be super nice. Thanks for your work :)
Lord I covered my mouth in horror when you were cutting at the plant and yanking off the leaves!! 😩😭😱 would love to see a follow up on how these got on 🙂
Thanks so much for this video - very easy to follow. My Dracena plant has grown to over 5', with a bushy top, but about 5' of just trunk! I had a little shoot near the top. Because of your video, I'm not afraid to make several cuttings, and continue to enjoy the dracaena, which was a plant from my late Mom's. thanks again!!!
Thank you so much for your time, I never knew it was that easy. 😂I LOVE RU-vid🤣I have a few Draceana that have been with me for many moons & have grown taller then me🤣✌🏾
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. One of four planted in the same pot got root rot, the obvious signs started with yellowing leaves but I thought it was possibly the close proximity to our gas-powered wall heater but then noticed only one of them were losing leaves and, the worst sign, very bottom of the stem closest to the soil is mushy. Was thinking I could just cut all the dead leaves then straight up chop halfway up the stem and check the others roots for rot. Thank you for encouraging my experiment!!!
Hiya, neighbor! North Tampa, here, just down the road from the USF campus. A friend planted his dragon outside a few months ago. I keep hoping it throws a baby so I can snatch it up and have one of my own. Fingers crossed. LOL. :)
Loved everything about this video. Very informative, you clearly enjoy what you do. Thank you for sharing. I came to RU-vid because I received a bouquet of roses with a dracaena plant into the mix. The roses died off, but the dracaena is still strong, so I am going to try your tips and hope it will work with my free plant😁. Thanks again.
I think I have this tree. It was about 18” tall a little less than 3 years ago. It’s 10’ tall now and only has one stalk and I have it outside on the front porch. It’s only getting afternoon sun but we live in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Thanks for your advice on how I should prune it
When do you start watering them once planted the cuttings? I am assuming they'd need to be in shade until they show new growth? I usually use soft wood rooting hormone gel for succulents so would I be using hard wood one for Draceanas? Thanks in advance.
I just accidentally chopped the top off mine with ceiling fan so now I'm sitting here in tears! Momma is 8 feet tall. How much do I water after potting?
Hello Regina, I'm so happy to come across your video. I recently had a tree branch fall on my Dracaena and split it in half. Thanks to your video, I will cut the three fallen branches down to size and replant them. I do have a few questions though. (1). Where the tree branch hit, it tore a bit of the bark on the main trunk that the three branches were on. I strapped it back in place using some small rubber hose with a zip tie through it to hold it together. Will doing this work to heal the main stem/trunk or should I cut it all down and start over. The plant still looks nice, even with the missing branches. (2). I live in Orlando, Florida, USA. We are coming up on the 2022 Fall/Winter season. Will this have any effect on the new growth taking root? It is obviously an outside plant in a big heavy pot and hard to move. I can do the new shoots inside in smaller pots and repot them outside in the spring. We rarely see weather below freezing. (0 Celsius) Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for posting.
Oh thank you for sharing this tip i have A darcaema marginata and the leaves goes brown wich makes me.sad i don'T know wat i'Ve done wrong ..now im gonna replant theese ..hopfully they recovr soon..
Thanks for your excellent easy to follow instructions. Hopefully I will be as successful as you. Thanks! One question I have is, how do your dracaena plants that are in the ground outside handle winter? I live in the mid Atlantic region of the US and while unpredictable our winters can be quite cold. Appreciate your advice.
These plants have a pretty massive root system, I wish you would have shown how you deal with that. I just repotted one that I've had for a while and I just whacked off about half their roots. I hope I haven't killed it.
if you overwater draceana, will the shoot that I cut off because it got soft grow new shoots or die off? Now the baby that I cut off from the shoot that was soft, do I stick it in the ground or put it in the water. When do you put draceana in the water to grow roots vs. just stick them in the pot with soil? And since water is an issue, do I just stick the shoot without any watering? I'm trying to dry out the soil in the rest of the draceana (my original plant had 3 shoots at different lengths, each grown from cuttings shut up 3 new plants, now I'm left with 2 large shoots, each has 3-4 growths and the one stem that's cut with 4 inches sticking out of the ground, the center of that cut shoot is very wet so it might not survive?, looks light brown, not green on the inside or white... but since I am holding off with any watering in this pot, should I either put this baby cutting that I saved into a separate pot or stick it in the water? I really have no idea what to do to not kill it.
I'm in my mid 20s and have a dozen house plants or so.. Great videos, thank you for the tips! Quick question for this one specifically: when (what season) should this be done during? Spring? Anytime? It's winter here now in Ontario (Canada), and my Draceana is potted, kept inside at temp of around 19-24 celcius. Side note if it changes anything, I will be buying a humidifier for my living room where most of my plants are. I've had it for over 5 years, and have been "looping" the stem/cane as it grows, which was interesting, but I now want to propagate it & have the original re-start from the getgo. Thank you for your time. Sincerely
I had to do it..lost the single stem still in pot, was about 14 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches wide. The head got a lot of roots, it has been in a vase of water for months, one stem section sprouted leaves and roots, and the other section lots of roots but no leaves. Any suggestions on how to get some sprouting leaves?
Lots of questions so bare with me. Is there a best time of the year to do this, I'm in the U.S.A. ? Also I was told to cut them on a 45 degree angle but you cut yours straight across, so does it really matter? How deep should they be planted in soil? Do you recommend they be planted in soil or rooted i n water?
I have a plant that's a good 5 meters high in my back yard it's a beast. I have rip it out for a Reno, can I propgate large limbs directly into the ground of a new garden bed?
I've been wondering what to do with our sad looking Dracaena plant. It was the first house plant that we bought and we've had it for a long time but it's terrible leggy now. I know now to turn the pots regularly to avoid it growing too much in one direction but I found this out a bit too late for this one. I was worried it was going to have to be put out to pasture but looks like I will wait until spring and then give this a go.
Thanks for this. I have one of these that's 20 feet tall in my house in Minnesota. I'm out of room. I wonder how many trees i can get from propagating?!?!
I have two of these for about 5 months, I repotted them and have them at my front window. Several of the tips are brown.and now droppy. Maybe I will try this.
