Flats, for the average person playing Overwatch in the USA it's likely they're making between somehwere between 10-30 dollars an hour. 30mins-2 hours of labor for a single digital skin and a weapon charm or something just isn't that great. And what if they're in another country? People in Brazil who make around 3 dollars an hour gonna have to work 6-8 hours for a skin? 10% of their monthly pay for a single bundle. Hell in the UK, Canada or Australia every bundle is a few dollars more because of their currency's exhange rate to USD. Their pricing is shit

I think the issue with monetization isn't even that the skins are "overpriced" but the fact that they have practically removed any way of getting them without spending money, before, the lootboxes were extremely easy to get in addition to coins when getting repeated items you could get a lot of stuff, but now it literally takes months to get a single legendary skin

I like Flats and a lot of his takes but the monetization take is absolutely cope. The pricing is ridiculous and the more people apologize for companies doing this the more they do it. Like battle passes are a perfect example. You pay 10 dollars to then earn stuff and since it got so popular in games like Fortnite it is now in every game. If you pay 10 bucks for something you should already have it and not have to earn it. Just cause it’s free doesn’t mean anything. You can buy a huge number of quality games with the money you would spend for one skin. Just because Blizzard gave you the allusion that the kpop skins are cheaper than they would make them normally isn’t good. They are lowering the price so you will go oh hey that’s a good deal. It’s just peer cope and my guess is flats wants to keep a good relationship with the company moving forward. Not saying he’s a sellout just probably he wants to go to events and for blizzard.

100% agreed. I was annoyed at Splatoon 3's equivalent to a battlepass, but at least it's 100% free. I recall during the One Punch Man collab in OW, I thought "hey, I might buy the skins and finally get back into the game", then looked at the store, saw the cheapest option to get all 3 skins, even went to buy whatever the in-game currency is called, and just stared at the total: 75 CA$... that's almost what I paid for Overwatch 1. My problem with skins stems from a few points that add up to making the skins value far worse/feel bad when compared to other games even if the quality is still good. Point one skins are rarely visible to the person who made the purchase which devalues them a huge amount as they are not visible during a majority of gameplay so its like buying a weapon skin and the model itself is secondary. Point two the fomo/predatory shop also leaves a lot of people with a bad taste in their mouth, good example is the latest mercy skin I've seen a massive amount of people not realize you can buy skins separately from the bundles because its not clear in the shop and you have to go to the hero gallery to do so and they basically payed 600 extra for a weapon charm which feels awful if they didn't also want the charm. Its literally so simple to solve this as well, the bundles already list all the items show a individual price next to them and have two buttons "Purchase item" and "Purchase bundle" Point three when the skins in the shop are recycled skins that you can purchase with legacy credits it reminds players of how terrible it is now compared to how it was before to obtain those skins. If you want a skin now you are spending minimum 6 weeks to obtain them and that's assuming you compete the weekly challenges every week and not including the one time battle pass reward credits each season. I also think it comes with swapping from a purchased game to a free to play game model while making all the previously "free" cosmetics time gated and selling a "get it now" version in the shop.

Another thing, I've been playing semi-casually every season since launch, and by doing the weekly achievements I've only reached 1000 gold this season, or about half the required amount to get ONE legendary in the shop. Maybe I played a little more on average in OW1, the arcade lootboxes were a good incentive, but I'm pretty sure it usually didn't take much more than a month or so for me to just buy a legendary skin with credits, assuming I wasn't lucky and got it in a box.

Since Flats compared OW to Valorant. I'd like to add that Valorant skins applies to every champions while half of the time in Overwatch, we can't even play the character we bought skins for because of counters and team comps. Yet it sells almost as much as Val skins. The more hero OW release, the less valuable a skin gets in their game. The chances of we can't play a character increases as the list grow.

I really hate the way you try and boil down the monetization conversation Flats. The issue isn't that the skins cost money, the issue is that the skins cost a third of a AAA game and the fact that the battle pass has no premium currency. As much as I hate Fortnite, they started the trend and still have the best battle-pass system in the industry, giving a person enough credits to get the next pass and then some pocket change that they can save up for a skin is a really good way to keep players involved without being a money hungry corporation. Overwatch would still make tons of money if the legendary skins were say $10 bucks, without coming off as the greedy puppet of a company.

1 thing i will always think is so fucking stupid is how new players to ow2 are quite literally at a disadvantage when first starting out, even if they have good aim When you lock more than half the cast for new players when the game nowadays REVOLVES AROUND COUNTERSWAPPING it not only makes it way harder to win game but also so incredibly hard to find a character that fits ur playstyle, i just dont get why they do this???
@afterlifearcade8468
@afterlifearcade8468 7 месяцев назад
1. New players are playing qp with other brand new players, "disadvantages" hardly matter as a brand new player is just learning what a few heroes can do as well as learning maps / game modes. 2. New players are not going to be counter swapping other new players because they don't understand the nuances between characters yet. By the time they do, they probably have every character unlocked anyways since you only have to play like 100 games total to unlock everyone. 3. They limit initial characters to make it easier for players to digest every hero in the game by slowly introducing them to each hero after a couple games. 4. It doesn't really hinder finding a character that meshes with you as it allows you to try a handful at a time at your own pace. Spend a few matches with them and then move to others if you wish. The only area where this may affect a new player is if they are grouped with a more experienced player, but even then, who cares if you lose in qp? Just focus on learning what you can from each match like what hero can do what and where health packs are. It's really not a big deal. 100 games goes by extremely fast anyways, and new players can't play comp immediately, so they aren't screwing over teammates either.
@AzureTD_
@AzureTD_ 7 месяцев назад
@@afterlifearcade8468 1. Like you said the issues arise when grouped with old player, which a decent majority will be as they'll get the game recommended to them by a friend whos played before, people can still be taught maps, game modes and heroes through other mean rather than just locking 80% of the playable cast, example being give them some kinda of quiz/challenge thats option that will help them find what playstyle theyd most likely enjoy the most 2. The point of new player not knowing what counter swapping makes no sense, like yea theyre new they wont know ANYTHING when they first start out, locking them out of learning a feature now and forcing them to learn it later is just silly? 3. Again, I understand what theyre going for, but its one of the dumbest ways to go about not wanting to overwhelm the player, things like hero mastery are what they should be looking at to teach new players how characters work, not force them to play heroes they dont wanna play to "learn" them 4. This point makes the least amount of sense to me. If a new player plays ur game and youve locked 80% of the cast behind progression and NONE of the starter heroes are fun for them to play they'll do 1 of 3 things either sit through games that are miserable or unenjoyable for them to unlock a character they may have seen someone play that they like the look of they'll do the same as what i just stated but without knowledge of the heroes, praying they come across something that interests them or they just outright stop playing, as they have no investment up to this point after wasting a few hours max in games they didnt have fun in i see what theyre trying to do, make the game not so daunting for new players is very valid and i think its a great thing, if done correctly, which it isnt here, i get qp isnt all about winning but if player are either teaming up with a old player and getting smoked, not being able to learn ANYTHING on characters they DONT LIKE or winning and learning on heroes they dont even like playing, with the only reason theyre still playing being copium that the next hero unlocked will "be the one" the majority of the new players arent mentally insane to sit through that, not to EVEN MENTION the amount of shit the new players will get for "not swapping/countering" and "throwing" till they get flamed out of wanting to play

There is a valid point too many people overlook when evaluating skin prices. I've said this in multiple places before, but I'll repeat it here. The thing about skins in OW2 (and surely other FPSs) is you don't even get to enjoy it when you're playing. Only other players get to see what you're wearing. All *you* see are your weapon(s) and hands. The only times you can see your full skin yourself is when you die, emote, use certain abilities that place the camera behind you, and the 2-second long victory pose and highlight intro. It makes you wonder, "what's the point?" "Why should I spend $20+ on something I won't be able to fully enjoy while I'm playing the game?" Meanwhile, you look at a game like League of Legends and you realize you're able to see your skin in full *at all times* when playing. Skin quality in League also happens to be consistently far superior, which is a nice bonus. You get much more value out of them for the prices, not counting prestige skins and the new mythic chroma nonsense.

@DanielHodder7

The monetization takes were bad and people in the chat were making good rebuttals. Make them cheaper, more people buy them and Blizzard also creates FOMO to "entice" people to buy their content. It's marketing and capitalism 101. You can say "Well if they make them cheaper, Blizzard makes less money and they get less resources" but we know why that is and it's capitalism. The execs at the top get paid way too much. These companies see record profits and still fire their staff. In a perfect world, they could make a legendary skin $4 and it would work out well because more people are buying and the money at the top isn't inflated. We're not in that world (obviously) but to say "$50 was actually okay because other games do charge more and I expected it to be $100". You can still be surprised at how cheap something is based on your expectations while also thinking it's too much. Are you really saying 4 skins is equivalent to the entirety of Overwatch 1? Both were priced at $50. You can accept the reality of the situation while also say it's bad.
@tau-5794
@tau-5794 7 месяцев назад
Essentially, demand is high but "supply" (high prices plus FOMO) make every legendary more "valuable" therefore they cost so much, it's just artificial scarcity. However nowadays there is apparently a big enough market of gamers who have enough time and money to spend in a game to regularly pay hundreds of dollars on cosmetics, so companies just pander to that market instead of the vast majority of their players. A more consumer-friendly business would charge much less per skin, or make grinding currency less tedious, greatly increasing the virtual supply of cosmetics, as well as the long-term success of the game, with more forgiving prices = more purchases and more clear progression than a maximum of 60 credits per week.

Each and every one of those people deserve a livable wage, right? So being compensated for their artistic abilities, their game creating knowledge, as well as their story telling abilities makes sense. Now, not only has that massive group of people created the skin but another department of people whom of which are extremely well versed in the economics of video games come up with a somewhat reasonable where they can account for the labor and cost of a skin but also still maintain a profit. It is literally the same concepts as to why a happy meal costs what it does and why the shoes you put on your feet cost as well.

My spiciest take of all time is that flashpoint is actually the worst gamemode in all of OW. 2CP wasn't that bad, it was just punishing to bad players, most people are just bad at the game, and the early iterations of the maps were ass. Push isn't that bad, people just got tired of playing it all the time and the early iterations of the maps are ass. Flashpoint, on the other hand, is RNG. I love playing it because it rewards map control and most of my skill expression revolves around movement, positioning, and map control, but the RNG nature of which points get unlocked in what order after the first one means that it's not always possible to be in an advantageous position when the next point is unlocked. This is true for both teams, although the gamemode generally favors the losing side by moving the spawns around the way it does. That means that (at least, when players finally learn the gamemode) you can just have a map diff for the entire game and be able to do nothing about it because it's entirely outside your control. But I love playing it because it's so unscripted, which is also due to the RNG nature of things, so IDK even what to charge. A set order would make it more fair, but almost entirely scripted. Which would be unfun IMHO, so I can't even complain. I'll just say it's the worst gamemode from an objective standpoint, but the most fun gamemode for me personally. At least, until people start hating it and soft throwing the instant they load into the game because "OMFG I got flashpoint again, I hate this gamemode."

(+ more layers goes into this with unique skin for 1 hero vs a weapon/knife skin for all the heroes etc.). I skipped most of the video because of the bad takes. Personally, I was thinking about getting the Kiri one but then I remember that I haven't really played Kiri in a long time and just decided to spend it on Baldur's Gate 3, best decision I made recently. Also Black Friday sales were soon (on rn) so definitely not worth it unless you only play OW (or stream it for profit in this case).

Come on man. How can Flats's argument be "if they sell the skins for cheaper, they won't have money to keep the game up". Not even considering the fact that maybe more people would buy them if they are cheaper, and that might end up making more money. And that is specially funny because even Flats mentioned the same concept at the beginning of OW2. He even explained how items that are "digital", like a skin, don't need to be crafted for every sale, you just make it once and then sell them, it doesn't matter if your demand is huge, because the item is already crafted, so you are able to lower the prices to increase the demand. So maybe a $5 skin makes 1000 sales = $5000, and maybe a $20 makes 200 sales = $4000. Also not a fan of those classic arguments at the end: "if you don't like, it just don't buy them" and "in other games is worst so we can't complain too much".

The clown that said Paladins is better lmao Game has made the devs millions and they have worse servers than some indie multiplayer games I've played. Not to mention the horrible monetization scheme they have with a bad battlepass and very, very bad balance. They had to remove POTG because it was causing issues with the game. to this day you can see player models teleporting to the origin of the map to get ready to see the POTG screen play when the match ends. So its still there but they literally cant be arsed. Oh and god forbid you get countered by an enemy. Now your entire kit gets turned off and you might as well just not be playing the game. Also healers got giga cucked recently because they have a fun little thing that when you take damage you receive reduced healing from all sources. And it scales as the game goes on up to, I believe, 80% at max, making support effectively useless near the end of the game. Not to mention half the supports have little to no actual damage and are squishier than the flankers, very cool And before someone says I'm just an overwatch fanboy, no. I dislike overwatch. But I hate paladins. Paladins is an extremely poorly put together game that they refuse to improve uppon. They just want to keep adding new heroes, sometimes maps when they feel like it, and just keep farming money instead of making an actual game. Oh not to mention half the lobby is most of the time bots

i mean at least paladins is not getting activly worse as time goes on Clueless. nah but still if paladins was as polished as ow with the cards sistem and all the champions it would be 100 times better than ow tbh

When a live-service competitive multiplayer game that has such a market presence as OW does, but withOUT the resources it requires to be consistently stable from its actual developer executives, microtransactions are a necessity. Not only are microtransactions necessary, but mismanaged overhead also pushes price up. As well, as Flats said, price is impactful relative to consumer base (particular demographic demand influences costs to a particular price range). For example, average player age in OW is likely somewhere from 20-30. League players are in the middle of this range but there are some outliers towards the upper and lower ends. Is it embellished? Most likely. Most likely microtransactions have their prices inflated due to managerial decisions, however, they exist in such a prominence because they have to. Could they be different? Could they be improved? Could they be more rewarding? Could there be more free items more often? Always, but the microtransactions have to exist to some degree for this game to continue. It's a free game, after all, in a market where the average product (video game release) is already massively underpriced proportionately.

OK so let me get this straight.. Pay 50 bucks for coins, and you get E X T R A C O I N S!!! You can buy the whole bundle for 50 bucks!! Deal of the century lets praise them for being slightly less egregious than EA in their prime.. Yea no waaaay XD And personally I don't even care about skins being monetized, but fuck me if I'm ever gonna be gaslit into thinking what Blizzard is doing is in any way commendable. They're literally just farming money. Also if they sold everything for super super cheap, they'd cater to a vastly broader customer base of potential buyers. Sell 1 skin for 10 bucks to one person, or 100 skins for 1 buck each to 100 people. Which one makes more money? And this is statistically proven, if the value of the item being sold does not change, you exponentially increase the sales potential the closer to zero you get. Going from 10 bucks down to 5 bucks doesn't double the customer potential. It goes up five fold. There is always a balance point of optimal customers x pricepoint, but Blizz have not found it yet.

It's not really right to say OW2 is not "as egregious" as other games. Fortnite's collabs are just as big as the Le Sserafim collab, if not bigger, and they happen more frequently. The pricing tends to be better too. I play Fortnite once in a blue moon, but I'll come back to buy skins and play a few games when a big collab happens. I've picked OW2 back up and played every single day since Season 6 started and it took awhile to decide if the skins were worth buying or not. That being said, the only other game I play that's actually worse than OW2 is CoD, since normal CoD isn't F2P AND has more expensive skins than both games. That's flat out messed up.

I think the $50 for 7500 coins was a step in the right direction, if they did stuff like that more often. That, or they lower the price of coin bundles overall. I bought it and I'm gonna use the leftover coins to get Season 8 battle pass, but tbf I also got hit with the huge FOMO hammer.

9:28 Players who don’t want to spend 20$ per skin still have the battle pass as an option. So even decreasing the prices skins are still affordable for all.

Millions of us were OW1 completionists. Get every item, get every gold weapon. Now it's all pointless. Not spending 100,000 to get all the OW2 items
