OWNING A DACHSHUND! 

Great description.. I always owned big dogs until I got my very first doxie for Mother’s Day in 2015...when I got a precious little piebald male. He is truly my best friend. He snuggles..he stays by my side...licks my tears off my face when I cry...and simply gives me unconditional love. I can’t imagine life without a precious doxie now.

My neighbor has 3 dachshunds and whenever I hear them barking I drop everything to go watch them play. Cutest darn doggies I've ever seen !

Recently got a dapple Dachshund.... love the little guy loves sleeping on my lap, follows me like my shadow... Dachshund is by far my fav breed of dog

Thank you for this video. I just acquired a dachshund, a stray I took in from the streets. No tags, no chip. I've always loved dogs, and always thought dachshunds were cute, but never considered owning one. I only got this one as an act of mercy, really, but within a few days I had gained enormous respect for the breed. Smart, affectionate, and he bonded with me immediately. Charlie barks when he's outside and sees strangers or animals, but he never barks indoors. He learned his new name "Charlie" within 3 days and follows me everywhere. I'm now a dachshund loyalist.

Sweet. I just lost my rescue dachshund boy. We were lucky to have him four years and enjoyed every day. He had some health issues because of previous owner. We gave him a joyful life, lots of love and excellent medical care. He did love to be touched and snuggled in bed. Was very good with children and other dogs.

'Owning a dachshund?' Good joke. They keep humans as pets and servants.

My wife said Molly needed a "friend"....and they need a friend.....and 7 dachshunds later. They are addictive. They probably live better than half the world. Spoiled rotten!

I had 2 and they were a blast; Tooco & Tootsie. They are fearless and sometimes their fearless nature can get them into trouble. You have to be careful sometimes with strangers. They definitely have an independent attitude. Meaning they have their own agenda.

My male, Winston, was very "needy." I had to pay attention to him only. He passed last year after a seizure and stroke which left hm blind and scared. Still have Maggie and she will be 16 this year.

My dachshund used to boss me out of bed before I felt like getting up, never let me have a seat to myself, and, annoyingly. followed me everywhere. Ever since she passed, I sleep better, sit more comfortably, and can take a step without having a stalker. In short, I'd give _ANYTHING_ to have her back. Miss you...you little terror. 💔

If you have one Dachshund you will have two.

5:36 Our dachshund would never come if we commanded her in a regular voice tone. When we used the Marine Drill Instructor tone of voice, she'd always obey, still wagging her tail.

Dauchshunds are such a great breed, we have 5 of them (a family) and though they are mischievous they are very loyal and loving dogs, wouldn't change them for the world!❤️

They go with us on the trails, about 3 mile walk. They pull me all the way!

First of all, you don't "own" a dachshund. No, what happens is that you become their (willing, most of the time) servant. This sounds bad, but it is not because the trade-off is that you get to live with one of the cutest/smartest/most lovable creatures that God put on this planet. The down-side to that is that they know how "blank" cute they are and how they have charmed you and they are not at all shy about taking advantage of it. Look up synonyms for "dachshund" and you should find "manipulative".

I recently rescued a wire hair he's been in 2 shelters and I'm his 2nd know home 😢 he's wonderful! I have 2 huge bully mixes and he runs with them! He's the neediest little dog and obsessed with me but I adore him! Never thought I'd have a little dog but I'm so happy I adopted him!

All dogs are great, but the dachshund is really something special. Louie and Dookie have trained us good.

I love Dachshunds. I've had 3 of them. My last one lived to be 20 years old.

I've had papillons for years and a wienie for a few months and he isn't nearly as yappy as my paps, but he does like to tear up papers and boxes; he and my male pap are really good friends.

Being on my 3rd, 4th and 5th Doxie I'll say this was an excellent informational vid!! Great work!! I've got a black and tan, a pie bald and a long haired honey color AND we have a Weimaraner/Lab mix. He's very good with them and ALWAYS tries to watch out for them. One of the health issues I have just encountered is my eldest (almost 10) has Cushing's disease. While this isn't just a Doxie disease, thinking back to one I had over 20 yrs ago, I believe he had it as well. So if your older pup starts losing hair and gets a big belly (not fat, just really bloated) can't get enough water (then a house trained pup starts having "accidents") and can't get enough to eat, take them for the test. Most of the time this can be controlled with medicine, although a very small percentage may need surgery. This is, as you said, the most loving cuddly breed out there!! Mine are my life!!

Excellent video - sums up the breed EXACTLY as far as my experience is concerned. Fun-loving, friendly little dogs with LOTS of attitude and a disproportionately large personality.

I absolutely love my red long-haired mini daschund named Rustelle . She just turned 12 years old February 28th and I cannot live without her . She has persistence, stuborness, and of course that bark of hers has me wondering if maybe she has dementia because she has been barking wayyy more than usual . Also, she is calm compared to the mini pinscher part chiuaua we own .

They like to dig too! My doxie was on a major task. Two big holes in the back yard. I kept filling them up and she kept digging it back up.

Gidget is our first Dachshund...and we won't be without the breed either. She can be sassy and stubborn but is the sweetest too! Willie and Tilly are so beautiful!!! I love how Tilly had her head on your arm while Willy was in your lap at the beginning of the video....too cute. Enjoyed the video!

Love the comment about the barking, letting you know what's in the neighborhood. We live adjacent to a river and my Chip will bark at things across the river. Or even a bag blowing by. Need to understand this about this breed. Wouldn't trade him for the world. he's awesome!

My dad today got me A long coat Dachshund. His name is Doogie(Doog). He is 6 and he got it off craigslist. The lady live in the same place as us. And we got him for free. and I love him.

All dogs are beautiful, but yours are real eye-openers for me. I've never seen a piebald dachshund before. They are so cute!

In our family between us and my wife's family, we have seen smooth coat, longhaired and wire-haired. We have also experienced mini, tweenie and standard. They are all self-willed, fierce from this side of the fence, loyal, loving and have a stubbornness that is ingrained. They can be a bit protective around strangers, but once they know your friends are accepted, they calm down. As for barking, they will bark at a butterfly fart. And, yes, they are a big dog in a small body. These are not Pomeranians with a Pom attitude, these are dogs with a 50-60 lb. dog attitude. However, you want a fun family dog that will give you love and amusement, they are perfect. Just be sure you get 2, even 3. The more, the merrier.

I have 2 tweenies. One is a piebald shorthair and the other is a double dapple longhair. They are 4 and 5 years old and are very well behaved and a pleasure to have❤️

Nice video! I have two myself, as per my thumbnail lol. One of my girls has been paralyzed three times.. one surgery and two extended crate rests with steroids. The good news is that she is walking again.. but yes I do recommend ramps.. monitoring jumping and climbing stairs. Great tips for these awesome dogs. Would never own another breed. Even with back issues. Way more reward than hassle. Doxie owner for life!

We've had two doxies. One lived to age 17, the other we still have and she's eight. Liked your informative video. We have steps to the couch and our bed, and give our Hannah Cosamine DS daily to hopefully ward off back problems. They are superb pets.

Wonderful video. We have three dachshunds and they are such affectionate and loyal dogs. We got our first dachshund way back in 1991 from an army family that was shipping off to Iraq in the first Persian Gulf War. All of our dachshunds since then have been rescues. Dachshunds are stubborn at times, with big personalities, and not always the best dogs if you have young children. If they believe they have been treated unfairly, not receiving a deserved treat for instance, then ours have been known to puddle on the floor to let us know of their displeasure. So obviously we try to keep them happy. They do best when they believe they are the center of our universe, which of course they are. They are eager to please but they expect their regular walks, their treats, and as much affection from us as we can possibly provide them. They see themselves as protectors of our home as they stare out our front window and patrol our backyard. If they were larger dogs that would be a problem but at 12 lbs or less it's just amusing. Excellent companions. My idea of heaven is in part reuniting with the dogs in my life that gave me such happiness on earth. Dachshunds are special.

I have had dachshunds for years and years ago I knew of none that had back issues. They have been so poorly bred that now they all seem to have it. The last ones we had both became paralyzed (one at 2.5 years and one at 4years). We had surgery on both and they recovered and were able to walk, but sometimes would have flair ups and would have to go back on steroid and pain med. One had a bad flair up and nothing was helping, it went on for weeks and she could barely move. My daughters took her to a acupuncturist and after one treatment she came running up the steps to our house and came in a new dog!! They take them to the acupuncturist on fairly good schedule and no problems! And you can teach a dachshund not to bark (or just a little). We found that by putting them in time out (in the bathroom) they learned to just bark when someone came for a few seconds! It was kinda funny we would say no barking go to the bathroom and they would both just march into the bathroom! We would only leave them in their for about 5 minutes. They wouldn't bark at all when they were in there and usually were good for a long time after. We would always love them up and praise them! Dachshund are just the best! Once you have one you are hooked!!

My 15 1/2 year old is a ninja warrior princess and she jumps right over the steps and ramps. She is very demanding and requires special attention from everyone and she seems to suffer from selective hearing. She's starting to experience cognitive problems though but I feel so special when she comes running to me, all excited to see me as if it's been forever when in fact it's only been a couple of minutes. I love my sweetie girl so much!!!

We got our first dachshund puppy a few months ago, a dapple named Chester. He is the sweetest dog ever and we are so glad to have him. So far he is not a barker, but is a cuttle dig.

I agree with everything that you said in your video. I've had my Dachshund for over 13 years.His name is "My Harry Son"!! These dogs have absolutely no fear but they are the sweetest most fun dog I've ever had.. Thankyou for sharing with us.

Love dachshunds. Have always had at least one since my kids were 2 and 6 and they are now 47 and 51. My daughter has always had multiples, too.

Great video! I just looked at someone's blog yesterday. She has two doxies too. She said they bark loud and often. "You never need a doorbell with a dachshund." And they are hard to house break lol. Baylee is still struggling with that. But they love to be a part of their family🐾

My first dachshund was called Willy, too! He was a very handsome standard shorthair black-and-tan (actually, he was red, not tan). What a love he was, and had all of the traits you talked about...he was a great hunter, very intelligent, goofy, stubborn, and oh, so gorgeous and perfect. Oh, did I mention stubborn??? He died of anal cancer in 2010 at the age of 9. I miss my boy to this day. Four doxies in total have graced my family...like Lay's potato chips, you can't have just one!

I have a wired hair dachshund ( Cappie ), he's about the most laid-back dogo I have ever had Mostly, he just likes to lazy around in my study room . My husband wanted a jack russell (Phryne), so we got one she's a spit fire . So I have one laid-back fur baby and one hyped up fur baby makes for a lively house. She pounces on her brother all the time , and he just rolls over and lets her "attack" him . Then, he gets up, and they do doggy zoomies around the house , they are fun to watch . Love them both !! They keep us moving ! We're 65 yrs young !

Have had 3 mini's. Wonderful & loving but "determined & tenacious!" Yes, their bark is loud/deep. They sound like a much bigger dog, behind a closed door & will stop intruders in their tracks! Important to keep their weight down because of back issues. I never had a doxie that sprained their back but you've got to keep them at their ideal weight & exercise them. Wonderful companions!

Had my first ever Dachshund now for a few months from a pup and he’s the most loving dog I’ve ever owned. He adores my small grandsons too and loves his terrier and golden retriever ‘siblings’ he’s just such a sweet boy and as of yet he doesn’t bark, although he and my terrier do when playing. I can’t let Jess the GR play with him bc she likes tug with the terrier and Harry isn’t allowed to play tug. On the whole they are adorable little dogs. ❤️

The personality is what makes the dachshund! They are more human than other dogs :-) and so they have their own view of the world. And they have an even wider variety of barks when hunting. There is a hunter inside every dachshund and they can switch from familiy dog to hunter in a second...

I had a Dachshund named Lucky. He was a barker, he would let you know if anyone came to the house.You are so right about them being LOUD barkers. I have a grand nephew named Izaiah, he and Lucky were close, he loved Lucky and Lucky loved him. Whenever Izaiah would come over Lucky would follow him anywhere, even though Lucky's back began hurting him he would still run and yes, even jump off beds. We put him down all the time, but when someone came over and he was on a bed or the sofa, he would jump down. In April, Lucky ran outside to chase squirrels, which was he loved to do most of all. He ran down the steps and into the yard, but then fell to the ground crying and then he started yelping and going in circles, I told my mom I thought he broke his leg. We took him to a veterinarian in a nearby town since his vet was not open on that Saturday. He told us Lucky had damaged his spine and would need an operation that would cost about five thousand dollars, that he probably would never walk again, except for one of those wheel things and we would have to help him go to the bathroom. My mom made the decision to have Lucky put to sleep. He was cremated but my mom wouldn't bring home his ashes. I would have loved to have brought them home and put them around the trees that he loved to chase the squirrels to. I hope your boy and girl live a very long time.Lucky was eleven years old, February 19, 2006, April 8 2017.
