Another gumby enduro vlog from
www.crosstraini... A brief look at the Oxbrake left hand rear brake system, the KTM 200EXC and a killer hill we haven't ridden for a while!
There is also a call for more support as there hasn't quite been enough to continue full time with the vids - so for the price of a coffee you can access four ride vids each month. Click here: www.crosstraini...
Time to look at some new bling. On a recent ride I swapped bikes with Lars from Australian Hard Enduro and he has an Oxbrake fitted. This is a left hand rear brake that goes under your clutch lever. Long-term viewers will know I was a huge fan of the Clake Two with the combined easy clutch and hand brake, until my arthritic fingers couldn't cope anymore. This looks like a good budget alternative at US$150 from my short ride with the Oxbrake. It's cable operated so very easy to fit. It sits underneath your clutch lever so is a lot easier to access when standing on the footpegs.
Two of our guys are getting the Oxbrake so I'll do a proper review when they've ridden heaps with it.
Support! As many of you will know, a pile of viewers encouraged me to go full time with these vids and finally bit the bullet six months ago. Mega thanks to those of you supporting the vids, your generosity has been amazing. Unfortunately I'm still using my savings to make up the shortfall so I hope more of you will come on board. All the training vids will stay available to everyone. So will some of the ride vids, or vlogs. But each month I'm going to make four of the ride vids available only to supporters. I won't bore you to tears with this, so just read on below.
WHAT HAPPENED TO MY FREE VIDS?!
Around 130 out of 68000 subscribers have generously supported these vids since I went full time but I've been using my savings as a supplement.From Oct 2016 four of the ride vids each month will be just to supporters for $1 each so hopefully more viewers will jump on board. Then I can get the original guys to give much less so as the support is shared a lot more. All the training vids stay free, and ad-free. And some ride vids too.
BUT AREN'T THERE OTHER WAYS TO GET SUPPORT?
Yep. And thanks for the suggestions you guys have sent in. I might follow up on some eventually, but here is why I'm not keen so far... RU-vid ads? RU-vid's pay is crap, I'd probably get around $15 per video. Merchandising? It all takes time to set up and monitor, and I'm already spending 60+ hours a week on the vids. Coaching courses? Insurance is expensive, travel time would mean less vids, and I'd much rather help guys through the vids anyway.
Less is more. Scotty recently got a KTM 200EXC to replace his 300, as he wants to focus more on clutch slipping. I've been surprised at the number of experienced dirt riders turning to 200s, 150s and even 125s after years of riding. They all comment on the bikes being so flickable and increasing the fun factor so much. I had a quick ride and it does feel like a toy you can just throw around. I can see how if you like revving a bike then a 200 could easily be the bike for you. Personally I like my grunt but it would be fun to try a 125 in the future and see what everyone is raving about.
We revisited a favourite climb of ours, not one I'd want to be riding a 200 up. Although I agree with Scott it will be forcing him to learn those clutch skills well. This is where I love the grunt of a big thumper as it tractors up. Now a top rider would just fly up this hill but our skill levels ain't up to the job. Yet.
I have a few stabs at this other climb that runs parallel but its very loose soil with rocks. I've managed to get up this one once on the old RR300 but no luck today.
This week I was reading up on why four strokes often get better traction on a climb. My favourite theory to date suggests that because it only fires half as often, the four stroke gives the rear knobs time to dig into the dirt for more traction before the power pulse hits. And it also softens the initial hit of power so the rear wheel is less likely start spinning. I figure top riders would have such good throttle control and clutch skills that it wouldn't matter which bike they were riding. Food for thought, and another question for Birchy if and when we see him.

Had an ox-brake on my Husqvarna 125 enduro model bought new rode it till 800kms then sold it. This bike ( fast on drag race..raced 350s less than a wheel length difference ) was great on flowing trails and technical hill climbs as long as it was not on wet clay hills...the powerband was either too hard & below powerband not enough. But the enduro ( full rego = cheaper greenslip & rego ) model with the heavier flywheel is much better trail riding bike than a motorcross version...had a kx125 = fun on flats & down hill, sucked uphills. Good points about the brake are Ox-brake great for riding downhills in neutral just like a mountain bike...u can stop the rear from locking up by only applying 1 finger pull...so.much more feel & control than foot operated brake My 125 didnt hve electric start so was a life saver when stalled on a steep rock face as u can hold the rear brake with your finger whilst kick starting. Easy to install & cheap & does not affect the use of the rear brake at all...gives u the option of 2 brake choices on the go. Can lock up the rear with 2 finger pull ( i weigh 60kgs & on a 125 ) not sure how it perform on a 450 with a 140kg gorilla Its also great when doing power wheelies on as u can keep u finger on the rear brake rather than foot brake which i felt more in control Bad points The rear foot brake mounting kit could easily get damaged by an unlucky fall or a stick ramming into it...saying that in the 8mnths i had it on with plenty of big crashes it faired well. The cable will stretch when new & will need adjusting/retensioning but very easy to do even on a ride..with the supplied allen key Biggest problem with it is not the fault of the product but because u get use to using it so much that once u ride someone elses bike or take it off your bike it will put your riding skills back...the mates u use to leave behind downhill will now be leaving u behind. Sorry for the long write up but hope it helps someone out there

Barry I just took the bait and sent in a donation. I've been a regular viewer for about a year. I started watching the vids when I got back into dirtbiking. The techniques have made all the difference in my riding. Who knew I'd have so much fun riding slow figure 8's on my suburban neighbourhood driveway! When you came riding in BC it was all I could do not to shirk my weekend responsibilities and join you guys - come back next year!

if you like 2 stroke, you can't beat the fun you can have on a 125, i used an old cr 125 with 18" rear wheel and lights (cre version) for 2 years before upgrading to a exc 250, the 125 is just so much fun i miss that sometimes

Yep switched from a 2007 Gas Gas EC300 to a 2012 KTM 200 XCW and LOVE how light the bike is and there is plenty of power for the really tight technical trails in the North West Washington trails. Walker Valley ORV is brutal tight fun stuff that was just punishing on the 300 2 stroke and is a joy and fun on the little 200. But then I am a bit older as well and don't like to ride around with my hair on fire anymore. Traction and balance gets me where speed and power used to.

that's the fascinating bit mike, in canada i met a pile of guys in their 40s and beyond who are opting for the small two strokes now, even 125s!

i have a 300xc and the misses has a 200 exc. there are times i consider changing to a 200 myself. hers is pretty well detuned and gets along great. the 300 is much more planted but then again its suspension is set up for me. i have noticed the 300 finds traction easier and when your tired not shifting is nice. you have mostly the right theory on traction on 2 vs 4 strokes. the readon a big bore smoker gets better traction than a small bore is for givin speed there is less rpm ftom the engine. also the more rotating mass an engine has the easier traction is to find do to less acceleration from the crank. obviously 4 strokes have more rotating mass in there engines.
@fireblade66
@fireblade66 8 лет назад
four strokes firing half as much gives the drive wheel more of a pulse effect causing better traction similar effect when comparing a v-twin road bike hooking up better out of corners than a four cylinder...

You should get an older 125, you can find them for dirt cheap here in the states, not sure about australia tho. And i did my first enduro race yesterday and it was extremely hard, 6 hours long and it rained and made the trails extrmely muddy, like riding on ice. I was one of the few novices to finish the whole race so im not sure how i did yet. My bike is beat to hell so i need to replace a few things before i can ride it again

My dad just got an ox brake for his beta but it is really hard to pull in and nearly impossible to lock up the rear wheel but every vid I watch they pull it in very easily. I was wondering does everyone have really strong fingers or is it hard to pull in for everyone.

How hard is the Oxbrake lever? Kinda looks like it takes a lot of force to lock up the rear tire.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
it probably needs more pressure than the more expensive hydraulic setups.... if you intentionally lock up the rear wheel a lot i'd suggest forking out the big bucks for a clake SLR. i think the oxbrake and the rekluse versions are more about finer control over the rear brake than brute strength.

@CraigGrunenfelder
@CraigGrunenfelder 8 лет назад
Yeah mine doesn't have the all out top speed and it's soft but I still get where I'm going. I enjoy riding, not really riding fast. Just seem very suited for alot of your vids discussing trial type riding on pretty rough terrain with the bigger bikes. Like on your last couple of vids with the clake, the clutch is super light, half finger light.

Backyard Boosters I actually use the clutch way less on my sx125 than my crf150rb, mostly so the power wasn't so on/off(because of engine braking) but also so I could stay in 1st. But now on the 125 I just slip the clutch in corners and in the gnarliest stuff.

Because 2 strokes don't have a valve train, im pretty sure the only difference between a 250 and 300 is the cylinder, piston etc, and different jetting.they are pretty solid bikes. You might have some dramas with the electric start but nothing major or too expensive.

OK *can* *someone* *please* *fill* *me* *in.* I've been wondering for a while now and it's starting to bug me. I ride a KLX250s and don't really understand the line between 2 strokes and 4 strokes for dirt/enduro or more specifically the type of riding in these videos. I see people lifting their front wheel and just holding their bikes or turning them around by wheeling in place, lifting the front end (like in 0:58 ) I hear about people going back to 150 or 125 two strokes but to my understanding two strokes make about double the CC (125 *2S* riding like a 250 *4S* 400 *2S* riding like a 800 *4S?* etc.) But then I see videos that say 250 4 strokes are great for trails and to go 4 stroke? Are 2 strokes lighter? Are 4 strokes slower? can you not be as mobile on a 4 stroke as you can on a 2 stroke? Is there no hope for trials type of riding when it comes to 4 stroeks? When he said they drop CC to be better at clutch slipping ( 2:27 ) wouldn't that equivalent to a 250 4 stroke and that would mean I would be just as capable as 125 2 stroke? I appreciate any feedback and hope you can understand my message! Love you're videos and I learn a lot as well!

The best bet is to look at some of the videos dedicated to this exact question. This channel has some, and so do several others (hundreds really). Your understanding of the power to CC ratio is correct although that is narrowing in the last 10 years I believe. Some people like the low end torque of 4 strokes. Others like the quick revving nature of 2strokes. Some people like the lower maintenance intervals of 4 strokes, while others like the easier maintenance of 2strokes even though they are doing it more often. Some like the better reliability of a 4stroke bike, while others talk about the simplicity of a 2stroke bike and what that means for fixing problems while out in the trail. Amazingly they have totally different characteristics, but each difference is surprisingly offset by a different advantage. PERSONALLY, since both are fun in their own way, I see it from the legal road perspective and the environmental one. Here in California, getting a 2stroke street legal dual sport is POSSIBLE but much harder and will get you tons more attention from the police. Id rather the bike 4stroke and they let me ride by, instead of stopping me and noticing that my knobby tires aren't actually DOT approved because I was riding a noisier smoking 2stroke. Also, if you've ever ridden behind a group of 2stroke riders that are running richer and more oil than needed.. its not that fun. Sure the smell is nostalgic for the first 30 seconds (brings me back to my standup jetski days) but after that I slow down and get away from the heavy oil smell.

David Driver I appreciate the feedback and will definitely look around. I definitely agree on the environmental impact of a 2 vs 4 stroke as well, I also know how bad it is to ride behind somebody that riding a 2 and I agree on that as well. Thank you!

actually they pay almost nothing, maks.... usually around 30c to $1 per thousand views so you need an incredibly popular channel to make it worthwhile.

hey not a problem loren, the last thing i'd want is someone contributing to the vids when times are tough... and as per the support page at some stage i would eventually make the 'supporter' vids available to everyone anyway because of this. :)

Here's a way to monetize your site. Link with online retailers and get a % when someone buys something via your link. TheDirtBike channel uses this model.. Smart.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
i know marc, but it doesn't really suit my style... i'd rather stay independent so i can be completely objective about stuff i review and list the faults if i find any etc. i know i could make a lot of money otherwise, but the vids have never been about that.
@marcb4788
@marcb4788 8 лет назад
CROSS TRAINING ENDURO SKILLS it's not an endorsement, you can stay objective, you're just saying "if you're going to buy shit from retailer x go to the site through my link" is all. Love the vids!

actually i thought there would be a few guys slamming me for the whole support thing, a few of my long term supporters said to expect this too.... but i figure deep down most of them must realise it's crazy to complain if just a few vids each month suddenly aren't available if the rest are all free. and no ads too. :)
