just in case someone was wondering what MW50 was... MW 50 (Methanol-Wasser 50) was a 50-50 mixture of methanol and water sprayed into the supercharger in the warbirds.. and if you were around in the 60's muscle car era in Detroit :) we had fun..

The mustang wing was a marvel of engineering, with high laminar flow optimization figured out in 41' it was designed to operate at high altitude as an escort. The downside of this was a tendency for boundary layer separation at moderate angles of attack requiring very careful flap management.

not only the wing it had a few things up its sleeve, it had a few nifty things like how it culd use the intake thing on the bottom that cools the radiator to produce thrust from the meredith effect. I just dont agree with how they armed there planes, i dont think throwing a shitload of 50 cals on ur wings is that much of a thought out plan. Its wasnt a dogfighter so it needid to get its nose on target in fast situations, i think nose mounted weapons or a cannon or something would of been cool.

The mustang engine was a merlin that was adopted to American manufacturing standards and built in the Packard plant in Detroit. They built 16,000 engines that were used in Mustangs, the "F" version of the P40. The British also used Packard built merlins during the last 3 years of the war in spits, mossies, and lancasters

Cap has been keeping his eyes on me when ive been rocking the mustang in IL2 The Gyro Gunsight is such a useful tool for getting good amounts of shots in, due to the position of wing mounted guns if your not at an optimal distance your bullets will just hit none critical areas at points on the wings where as if you set your wingspan and convergence up properly on the gunsight you just put so many rounds down the centre of the airplane your gonna hit more critical points like the engine and as i always seem to do in IL2 kill the pilot. especially if you fire at the right convergence distance where all 6 .50cals are hitting the exact same spot. And i will take a fight against a FW190D any day over a K4, K4 definatly a tougher opponent. And you are correct in the fact that the mustang is just better at lower level the higher up you go the more even the performance becomes between the two fighters until about 25000ft ish when things start to go in favour of the D9

@@grimreapers I wish. i could sleep earlier and wake up earlier in time for your stream and then go to work after dogfights XD On another note I’ve seen people mentioning other planes in the comments but if you wanted to do more of this you could do some more ww2 1v1 dogfight stuff on IL2 we do have a dedicated il2 server which me or tankie can easily set up quick 1v1 dogfight missions with aircraft that are not in dcs. Hurricane vs 109E La5 vs 190A5 109F4 vs Yak Some pretty interesting dogfights you can do here that people might be interested in

Thats because k4's will outturn u easier and are better for a dogfight, dora is better at boom and zoom. the Dora has nose mounted weapons, and the cannons that were on the wings were very close to the fuselage, that makes it easier to aim and get ur nose on things with ur guns. Tho the drawback to nose mounted weapons is that you have to have them fire at timings basically so you dont shoot ur propellor and youd get a 10 to 40% reduced rate of fire, the germans used an electrical system for firing the guns, so they only saw a 10% max loss rate of fire. The US didnt have a light enough cannon to use like the germans did on there planes, also wing mounted guns are alot easier to work on. Some german guns were firing thru the prop hub AND thru the propellor blade, that requires a whole engine rundown to mess with ur weapons.

Awesome comparison video! The .50 cal round still needs some work done, a single round to the center of the engine will stop a car. Even if the engine block is cast iron, that is why it was the most effective weapon against VBIEDs in the Iraq war. When armor piercing incendiary hits metal it causes more extensive damage due to the super heated magnesium fragments than we see in game.

Dora's were the most capable fighters of ww2, when the US came across abandonded ones after the war, we rigged them up so that they could operate off our fuel. And they outperformed anything we had. Mustangs, spitfires, anything. And the Dora has nose mounted weapons, and the cannons that were on the wings were very close to the fuselage, that makes it easier to aim and get ur nose on things with ur guns. The mustang can outturn it, atleast in dcs, but the dora should have a better roll rate. In IL2 you could use alot of aggressive rolling manuevers with it, im not sure if these tactics work in dcs. Also the dora should be about 50 faster at sea level, they should be about equal at 3000 and the mustang starts to take over above 6000, but this difference is only 50 kph .The mustang will outdive it, but not by a huge amount. And the dora should start to catch up once u hit sea level. The dora is a pure BnZ aircraft u need to master to learn, once u learn all its tricks and whats its capable of its lethal.

@@JohnnyKaw11B It actually knocked bad, the mw50 was the solution for that. Im not sure what they did to make it work but people say it happend. But engine to engine the merlin and jumo have the same knock resistance, theres just other variables involved that make the merlin better, it had a secondary cooler the german engines never had. If it wasnt for the US taking the merlin engine, adding better bearings, and some other famous part, ontop of our production techniques, it wouldnt of nearly been as great as it was.

@@profo4544 You would have to completely rebuild and retune the engine. I highly doubt MW 50 alone would fix pre-ignition in an engine designed to run on 92 octane, and even if it did it wouldn't run for long.

So many variables. The engine/propeller combination determines how effectively power is transmitted to the air. Presumably the designers knew more than I do though :) I would like to see that contest repeated at higher altitudes where they usually operated. Try it again between 25,000 to 30,000 feet perhaps.

Yesterday I was doing a bombing run in Fw-190 A-8 when I suddenly got jumped by a Mustang on the return flight. I took a few hits but couldn't dogfight it as I couldn't get my nose on it, so I just decided to run for the nearest axis airfield to get help from allies and it was quite a chase as I decided to go into a low flight while avoiding fire from the Mustang. Flying between factory chimnes and in rivers paid off as I pulled towards the airfield and I looked back to see an explosion. The pilot chasing me couldn't manage the low flight so well and he ended up hitting the ground. I was quite proud of myself.

I've got nothing to say about this head-to-head. BUT, I was going through some of my father's mil-papers and found his squadron's jacket-back-patch... guess what??? He could have been a Reaper !! Look up the USNav WWII Squad emblem for VC-7 (Composite Squadron) Screaming Skull with a carrier running out the mouth... how Reaper is that? The VC-7 were shuttled off for a run to near Saipan in '45, but as soon as they got on station, the conflict ended. EDIT : He would never talk about what he did in WWII (squadron Ordinance Officer) and I know he was trained in technologies outside of conventional warfare (its in his military record). To drive a man of peace (a botanical research station worker) into being a volunteer warrior just shows the awesome power of strength and indignation that had swept the country, post-Pearl. Like so many after '45, he quietly returned to his career and eventually became a respected professor and innovator in his field, only to fall to the affects of PTSD and publish-or-perish. Mad respect to those who flew the Warbirds, and to those who maintained them, (and my apologies to all on the GR channel for the tone of my pre-edit comments. I just spent a rather emotional day going through my mother's household. She passed away last month at 96, over 30 years after my father. Last night, I walked through my father's mil-record, in quintuplicate, including the squad 'year book'... even found his virtually untouched squadron back-of-the-jacket patch...'untouched', because "Who would wear that jacket state-side or in the South Pacific?" And then the Uk broke out... Sorry... It's been a damn tough month on the homefront. ) BTW, if you like stateside-produced Pistachios, allow the ghost of my father to take a bow... his name is all over the pre-introduction research station work from the Dept of Ag Station in Chico, CA. And if you're a cell-researcher and ever wondered how we got such great tools for monitoring single cell growth and monitoring techniques, you can thank my dad again. ... and I thought I was 'doing good' by having a hand in making the first AED and help it get through the FDA ... I'm nothing, compared to that man.

Never turnfight with the Dora😉, use her massive engine to Zoom and Boom, she is made to shred bombers in high altitude. I you fight a turn fighter, you should only engage him by zoom in and out, let him bleed his speed and energy and come on him from the top over and over.

My unsterstand was that the D9, as a stopgap measure, worked best at low-mid altitudes. D11/12 or better TA152 were the high alt planes

@@Padzee00 The D9 was mainly designed to fight the allied Escort fighter's, mostly the P51 at this time. And to cover an support the destroyers attacking the bombers. That's the Theory, but we know how well it worked^^ The FW weren't all the best turn fighters, not the worst, but probably not particularly good either. And yep, the D9 was only an interim solution until the TA 152, give an "old" plane more power to close up to the allies. However, almost all FW were often used used as ground attack aircraft due their robustness, perhaps hence the idea of low-mid attitudes. For me personally the terrible line of sight speaks against a turn fighter approach, when you turn and fire, you never see your target.^^ Best solution seem to come down like a cannonball, fire in the half second you have, go cold, regain energy and do it again.

@@Chris-85- regarding your recommended use of the DORA, (and in fact, all FW190 variants), completely agree. NEVER do a turn fight in a Butcher Bird. Dive, shoot, climb, Rinse, Repeat. After all, with 4 20mm in most fw190, you only need one on-target burst....

@@grimreapers At least it used to be the case with DCS. The 109 has activated MW 50 at mid air start, but the Dora did not. I don't know that this has been changed in the meantime.

@@bruhmomentum7155 MW 50 stands for methanol water in a 50:50 mixture. This mixture was sprayed into the supercharger in WWII to dramatic increase engine power (in the right conditions) by lowering the air intake temperature, which allowed the engine to pull more air (higher air density).

@@bruhmomentum7155 Methanol-Water injection. It allows enhanced cooling and retarded detonation in high compression (high manifold pressure) situations. You get more complete combustion of the fuel as you can compress it more before ignition. I don't know if the USA water injection also included methanol, but probably.

I don’t know if DCS has an LA-7. If it does that would be great to see how it stacks up to the P-51D and the 190D. In Aces High it is the fastest A/C as well as in War Birds.

One observation I've made in watching your h vs h fights as well as other channels is that the pilot that dives after the merge almost always loses or is immediately put at disadvantage.

dora vs mustang is an easy on, if the dora turns it will keep its speed better due to higher wing loading and more power, but the mustang will turn inside you. With "maneuver" flaps (takeoff setting) you essentially nullify your power advantage and trade it for more drag and turning. Theres probably dora pilots doing really well with flaps. But i'd recommend just keep them up to have an energy advantage over your bandit at all times. In the end he can't shoot where he can't point his nose.

Just a thought, at the merge, how about going one circle? The roll rate of the 190 is one of it's strengths, so you should have an advantage in a rolling scissors, which is what a one circle is likely to result in?

Your tests are fun but not representative - Dora accelerates faster even with out MW50 (on video you were already on max speed, so it was about equal), D9 faster at most altitudes (its hard to see low speed difference, but even 10-15km/h is rather good for props), especially at 10 000-20 000 feet, but P-51 turns better in sustain turn. It's easier to win 1 on 1 on P-51, but IRL pilots fought mostly group on group, and Dora much superior in it. In hands of qualified pilot Dora can fight with two 51s even with out MW50 in DCS (from what I've seen). And all this on 87 octane gas. 🙂

To be honest I'm a bit suprised with the result as in real life the D9 was able to outturn any allied aircraft (including mustang and spitfire) with no problem and even without MW50. Also it was capable of outrunning everything and so it is called by many as the best airplane of second world war but in DCS its actually pretty terrible

The USA considered a 20mm cannon was worth 3 .50s, and the MG131 is worth 85% of an M2 (spurious figure). So the firepower on paper isn't so massively different. Except that Minengeschloss is deadly, and it's all close to the centre line.

Your notion on acceleration is flawed. Propeller efficiency determines both acceleration and speed. The three blade prop on the Dora may be less effective the the four blade prop on the mustang. The higher horsepower of the Dora is enough it should be faster and climb better than the mustang.

Hmmmm, if you forgot to turn ON such crucially important thing as MW50 while recording plane vs plane video and test...and from sound of the engine you did not even realised that it is OFF then it proves that you don`t really know planes you are flying. It is the same as one of you fly F-16, other one fly Mig-29 and the one flying F-16 forget to engage afterburner during dogfight!!!!! In such a case there are 2 options: 1. Better not to release this sort of test videos at all. It undermines your credibility. 2. Spend some hours in those planes and study the manual to actually get to know planes properly prior to the recording.
