Dude, I am a mechanical engineer, amateur car DIY, literally you are not a mechanic, you are a nerdy engineer with a mechanic job... Love your videos so much...of all the Techies/engineers/mechanics i have met, FEW can diagnose something until they KILL IT WIDE OPEN... like you do, electronics level, engine parameters, timings P.S: YOU ARE SUPER INTELLIGENT as well.

I'm not even a mechanic and you made this look easy. My '01 Silverado has a random misfire code and after 2 mechanics looked at it both had different opinions, and both were probably wrong. Most likely an intake leak based on what I learned here. Keep up the awesome work!

@SchrodingersBox 6 лет назад
Why is it most likely an intake leak? What data are you using to indicate that? Do you have a normalized fuel trim under load that curves high at idle?

Good clip. I really wanted to watch the vacuum dial but it was flooded out. I enjoyed the part two too (part to to? Than can't be right!) . Always good to see that final histogram act as it should. Son in law's car has got lean codes setting. I can't wait to get the scan tool on it. The shop told him it was most likely a vacuum leak without looking at it. They were planning to replace a lot of hoses. I gave him my scan tool and your links.

Had a P1415 code only. Replaced the left secondary air check valve. The old one was definitely plugged. Cleared and ran the truck. MIL light back on, checked and it had a P1416 code only. Cleared it to just make sure it wasn't an anomaly and MIL light came back on with a P1416 and P0410 code. Replaced the right secondary air check valve. Will run it today and tomorrow and see if that is all what the problem was. If I get the P0419 back, I will run through your diagnostics and check the rest of the stuff. It's my truck, so I don't have to answer to anyone but myself. Thanks for the diagnostic info.

Ok but I would recommend diagnosing it before replacing parts. Seems more logical to do it that way to me.

@@SchrodingersBox the check valved were both plugged. I did replace those. I did find the short vacuum hose that goes to the manifold destroyed and replaced that. Don't have a power probe, not a scan tool to run the other checks at this point. Cleared and will drive it tomorrow to verify. I agree. swapping parts isn't the way to go, but since I, so far, have replaced parts that needed replacing, I'm not worried about it. Thanks.

Can I suggest that you turn the work lights to face the wall or ceiling rather than into the camera lens. The light will reflect off of the white surface and produce a much softer light more suited to filming. Also I am still searching for that youtube channel where a professional mechanic makes videos on molecular biology.

Good stuff verifying with propane & smoke... I never got into using the propane method myself. I think because I was always worried of it igniting from the spark in the distributor cap (when I first started every car had distributors) as well as the propane stays in the shop (heavier than air). Congrats on reaching 10k subs!
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 9 лет назад
Thanks Thomas. Yes I am not at all a fan of using propane, normally because it just doesn't work that great- it is hard to reach some areas and the results are kind of subjective a lot of times if the leak is small. I only showed this because most DIY's are not going to use smoke. I think propane is a hell of a lot safer than brake cleaner though. At worst with the propane you might have a flash or light the torch or something but with puddles of carb or brake clean, that's a fire hazard! Thanks for noticing the 10K- can you believe it?

Schrodingers Box Ericthecarguy on his ETCG1 channel shared one of his embarrassing moments as an early technician. He was brake cleaning away after an intake was removed if I recall. He broke something. He had to weld it back together. Fumes were still present and "Boom!" Some eyebrows later and lots of people turning their heads his way...he's long since realized that engines are meant to handle a lot of heat and a little fire isn't as bad for the engine as people would worry if it didn't continue, but it sure is dangerous for the tech. or DIY. My take away from this is that everytime I reach for my welder I think of the history of what I was doing first or what could be on the metal that should be cleaned and dried first if something explosive could already be remaining invisible in the metal. I'd much prefer to never haver personal experiences to draw from in the dangerous arena and learn from other's mistakes.

There is one possibility for a legitimate misdiagnosis of the AIR pump by the shop tech. Worn brushes in the motor can cause motor to work or not work intermittently. Motors can occasionally work for some time before quitting completely. If this is case, the problem may recur. I've found that first start cold will usually result in non-start of worn brushes. I've seen this on several heater blowers. Great video. I look forward to each release. Regards
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 9 лет назад
Good point, however it does not save this shop because even if that were true and there was a 1 in 100000 time intermittent with the motor, they missed the 100% failed solenoid.

Thanks to your last video where you explained it in excruciating detail, at 8:00 mark, I could immediately see the issue is with some kind of vacuum or intake leak due to high STFT values in Idle.
@SchrodingersBox

Why would you have high Stft's at idle? What were the LTFTs and why did they not normalize the STFT?
@vladbcom
@vladbcom 8 лет назад
Schrodingers Box Bought a car 2nd hand. Previous owner was driving with misfire on various plugs. When I got it, the #8 was still having that issue. Changed the coil (he only swapped the sparks) and misfire went away. However, the cat went as the downstream o2 sensor is jumping all over the place matching the upstream one whereas the other pair rock it normally. I'm thinking now whether there's a cheaper fix than replacing the entire cat.. hmm. As it stands, LTFT is at ~6 now, so not too bad. On the point, before I forget, what software are you running on that laptop? I'm currently using torque on my Android tab. But your app seems very thorough.

It took me a week I watched videos I was able to download diagrams I mean I didn't end that research on my Milan's secondary air system which happened to be that my year Milan is the only car from Mercury that has this system. I will never buy a car with a California based emission system ever again. I had a p0410, p 0491, a p0300, and p2257. I started by changing the diverter valve, did nothing so I thought maybe it could be the solenoid, plus the 40amp fuse would blow each time I started the car. So I had over a dozen fuses just in case for a week. After I replace those I still had the same lights except for the p0300. I finally caved and did the pump the p0410, and p0491, finally went away when the new pump was replaced. Yay, then I put in the new fuse again start the car and boom wrench light, car wants to stall. it's a very high then immediate drop to low idle and check engine light. Good news is now my new pump works, but will not turn off on its own over about 40secs, even when I turn my car off the pump is still running. At this point I know I may have to do some major wiring testing. And I'm terrified of it because my smog pump relay and PMC relay are one in the same. I also noticed the fuse is not blowing anymore. So two positive so far. Still I turn my car off, run a scan the skin device once I put my car in run but immediately turn on my secondary air, or smog pump. I also noticed that the only time it would go off is if I banged on my junction box. Anyway the scan pulled up 2 opposing codes p2257 and p2258. 😭 I checked all the hoses found the hose that goes into the manifold from the diverter valve solenoid was extremely cracked and dry. that was a difficult hose to replace because you can't find them around here. I did find one at a junk yard in great condition, another diverter valve as well as the solenoid that's attached to a just in case, and out of extreme caution I even took a relay from the exact same year fusion as my Milan because that's the only one that would match to my your car. I replaced those all again, except the relay because the relay treat asked it was good. I did not know that every single time that smog pump started because the diverter was not feeling the vacuum it would which shorted solenoid which is why the pump kept going. After I replaced it all again along with the hose no change. Now though I was smart enough to turn the car off immediately and start my pump immediately to prevent further damage. I would still have to bang the junction box to get the pump to stop though which put a light bulb over my head the relay needed replacing possibly took out my old relay put in the new one started the car 1500 RPMs stayed stayed in a wrench drop down to about 80 still no range put it in drive went around the block very good came back parked turned off the car got out listened the pump wasn't running. Okay so far so good, started my car again that would be the big test held my breath turn the key no wrench and because my engine was already hot the RPMs would go into idle 60 70 RPMs no wrench I've never felt such relief in my life. I got to realize that there was something loose within the relay that was causing everything to short out because every time I hit that junction box it would shake something back into position within that relay causing the pump to turn off. Took the old relay inside my house tested it don't behold was not working properly I don't know if me constantly starting the car with the bed solenoid or the bad diverter or having that fuse blow so many times cause the relay to finally pop but every single check engine light is gone and it's not even secondary for the p0300. I hate the secondary systems and I'm going to make sure I do not have them with any other car they're so frustrating

Just earned another subscriber mang!!! Im having a random misfire on my 95 subaru. Hard to explain. When you pull your foot out of the throttle at highway speed, like going down a slight hill, and then put your foot back in, like trying to get up another slight hill while staying at speed. It feels like it stopps adding fuel at the rate that the pedal is repressed. Shortly after my car throws a flashing misfire code. Its got me stumped.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 9 лет назад
I generally only do 1996 and newer since that's all my scantool works on but if this were a OBD2 car I would be diagnosing fuel trim to chase my first suspicion of either fuel delivery issue (which I would validate through fuel pressure testing) or dirty MAF.
@Bobbo63
@Bobbo63 9 лет назад
luckilly its an obdII... one of the firsts. But yeah... i can do the old volkswagon trick on it when it starts throwing a tantrum. Pull spark plug wires... and when no change happens thats the cylendar. With that being said, i got spark, and intermittant voltage to that particular cylendar. Good compression... any suggestions?
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 9 лет назад
Like I said, your description makes me tend to suspect fuel deficit and I would examine fuel trim to confirm as my first step.

I have a 1997 Cadillac Eldorado and it had the P0300 multiple misfire code. I replaced the PCV valve and that cleared my P0300 code. My 2000 GMC when I apply voltage from an outside source to my secondary air pump, it will run for about two seconds and quit. Should it run continually when powered from outside source? When I use my vacuum pump on the diverter valve, it doesn't pull any vacuum but, it does when hooked up in the loop.

Just to add to my comment below, I had a mechanic (he worked on my wife's cars for years before we met) replace the air pump tubing, and check valves on my S-10 a while back before I repaired the actual cause of the P0410 code on my S-10 truck. The only reason I had him do it at the time is because I just had hip replacement surgery, so obviously I wasn't able to crawl up under the vehicle to diagnose it myself. Well, it turns out, of course, that his replacement of the valves and piping didn't fix the problem. I told him of the code, and asked him to verify the fix when I dropped it off. Needless to say, he didn't. So, once I was well enough to climb up under the truck, (the air pump is under the front bumper on the S-10 models), I quickly found out that the pump was frozen, and also the diverter valve was full of water. Thanks for that great repair job guy!!! Again, needless to say, I won't be taking any of our vehicles to him. It's just as you said, you have to learn how to do these things yourself (which I did years ago), because you can't trust anyone!!! Oh, and this guy is a reputable mechanic in my area, and was highly recommended to my wife years ago. Go figure......

I completely agree with you that a proper diagnosis is imperative to a successful repair. However, many customers don't want to pay for an actual diagnosis because Autozone, Advance auto, or their grandfather with a code reader pulled a p0171 and said its a MAF sensor. Obviously that was just an example, but that's a huge problem these days and I really DON'T BLAME THE CUSTOMER! It's these Big Box part stores creating a world where you just replace parts.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 9 лет назад
And also the parts changers on forums and chat rooms, Yahoo answers, etc that do the same thing. Wish I had a dime for every person who gave me a list of symptoms and expected a diagnosis over the phone. Agreed- there is a whole mentality out there that quite honestly, I'm trying to change a few thousand people on- but I am massively outnumbered by people who will just never "get it" lol. But agreed- I never blame the customer-- unless it's one of those customers that tells me what they think is wrong and how long it should take me to fix it lol.
@crcdesign9886
@crcdesign9886 9 лет назад
I would say we're greatly underfunded compared to these large corporations.lol don't you love those customers..I used to get really annoyed when they'd do that but I've been learning to try and shrug it off. I had a customer the other day call with their symptoms and expect me to tell them the exact problem over the phone...but yet he said it's gotta be a fuse! Or some switch not causing it to start...I ended up going out to the car...yea that fuse was actually an engine with no oil in it whatsoever..that loud metallic sounding click that over the phone sounded like a starter was actually an engine seized solid! But it gets better...they asked immediately how much is that to fix and can I do it before they have to be at work...2hrs later!

Not on the vacuum readings shown in this video it won't, because I was applying vacuum with a pump. But I think you are thinking of manifold vacuum being lower at higher altitude, and that is true. Intake manifold vacuum will be lower at higher altitude, also MAP readings will be lower as well, however fuel trim will not be lower because it is adjusted per MAP.

My 2001 GMC Sonoma has me confused. It has only one code, P0410. The pump cycles and sounds fine, tested the diverter valve and it operated correctly, the check valve seemed to have a little resistance so I bought a new one which felt the same. is there a chance the pump could just have a weak flow? Or did I miss something? Also the vehicle is California emissions 2.2 flex fuel.

You refer to putting air into the manifolds. I assume you are referring to the exhaust manifolds and not the intake. If I am not mistaken, air, from an A.I.R. system, only adds air or oxygen to the exhaust stream in order to accelerate the heating of the catalytic converter by giving the oxygen sensors a lean signal in order for the pcm to richen the mixture whereby getting the cats hot faster.

$700??? Are you kidding me? It wasn't even the correct diagnosis!! I just replaced the air pump, solenoid valve, and air shut off (diverter) valve on my truck(they were all corroded from the failure of the check valve to the exhaust manifold) in about an hour by doing it myself. The parts were only around $200. So, going by a shop's labor calculation, I probably saved myself about $500+. Mine is not nearly as easy to get to as this, as it is under the truck on the passenger side in front of the motor. When I hear of things like this here, it really pisses me off!! Great job on the video!! I follow them regularly, so keep up the good work!!
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 5 лет назад
Yeah it did seem a fair price for shop labor by comparison actually but indeed- the fact they gave the wrong diagnosis is almost criminal. My other channel has a case study on a subaru where the quote on an AIR system replacement was almost $2000!!!!!

@@SchrodingersBox On another note, I have the Autoenginuity software that I purchased (thanks to your video of the comparison of it versus the Autotap), and I am quite happy with it. I love the bi-directional controls that it supports. It comes in VERY handy. Just as you did, I verified correct operation of the A.I.R. system after I replaced the parts, and indeed, both upstream HO2 sensors flatlined when I turned the system on while the system was in closed loop. My wife and I drove to Panama City Beach, FL yesterday and she drove all the way down, so I was able to hook up the Autoenginuity scan tool to my truck and watch all of the parameters while doing so. Very cool, indeed! One thing of note, and maybe you can explain this. After the fix, the software still showed the Air Injection test as "Incomplete"; even after many drive cycles. I'm not sure of when GM's programming decides to do their tests on a system that has had a fault code, and the problem was fixed. I know it tests during closed loop, as you explained though. The code, prior to the fix (a couple of weeks), always showed the code as "pending", however, it never turned on the MIL. Any thoughts on this?

I honestly don't know how they sleep at night knowing that they do this crap! It's sad, very sad. Oh, I purchased a Power Probe III a few weeks ago after watching your video. It comes in real handy when testing many things. Autoenginuity is great, but it doesn't offer the ability to turn certain devices on bi-directionally. Not necessarily a fault with the software, it's just how it is with certain vehicles. One of the best purchases I have made in a long time.

Sandy from Scotland beat me to it, but I also thought you were going to point out the very low vacuum in combination with 0 percent throttle as indication for a vacuum leak. Another thing: when you test with the bad solenoid toward the end of the video, you talk about the computer maybe compensating for the air pump's activity by temporarily increasing fuel trim (if I understand correctly). This seems unlikely to me since a lean mixture at the cat is exactly the objective of the pump, in order to heat it up. At least, that's what I learned from your previous video and from ScannerDanner.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 9 лет назад
Yes to be honest I do not know exactly why the system went rich with activation of the AIR pump but the air not entering the manifolds. I was just listing the possible reasons which are load response or anticipation. I do agree with you- I believe it is merely response to the increased load from the AIR pump, and the engine runs rich as a result when no AIR actually enters. Like you, I do not believe it's the latter- that it would compensate in anticipation of the AIR activity leaning the system since that would defeat the purpose of the test.
@Peugeot406coupefixes
@Peugeot406coupefixes 9 лет назад
Schrodingers Box Increased load from the air pump - hadn't thought of that. Not entirely impossible I guess. You mention that the system was already in closed loop at this point, so the pump shouldn't normally run in this situation, correct? Perhaps the computer does anticipate for this situation - closed loop but pump running for whatever reason - by enriching the mixture because the cats (that are supposed to already be at operating temperature when in closed loop) might overheat and get damaged as a result? Anyway thanks for the reply, your involvement and the actual thinking process that goes on here between 'us two-percenters' is what makes this channel so good.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 9 лет назад
Dan Thanks man. Yeah I could figure this one out if I really tried- maybe look at MAP responses or something. The thing is, there is ridiculously little information even in the technical manuals on the operation and verification of AIR. For example- the Helms manual is incorrect in one validation: it specifically states that during closed loop it will command on the pump AND solenoid to send air through the exhaust and look for lean. Well actually this is not totally correct. I saw a car with a stuck open solenoid- the diverter valve is always open (unlike this car in the video). It threw the same P0410, 1415, and 1416. Now think about that- from the PCM perspective, how would it know to throw the code- the solenoid is already open regardless if it is commanded on or not- the system will go lean as expected. It HAD to have turned the solenoid on and off separately while the pump was on to confirm the solenoid (and/or diverter valve) is closing. The failure to see rich during closing of the solenoid/diverter had to have thrown the code- there is no other explanation for how it would "know" to throw the code otherwise. So a lot of information is still to be learned on the operation of these systems.
@DENicholsAutoBravado

Schrodingers Box "So a lot of information is still to be learned on the operation of these systems." Absolutely, but seeing how each component is supposed to work will reveal what is wrong even if a full understanding has not yet been achieved. DE Nichols +Schrodingers Box I agree, even if we do not know all the ins and outs of the programming, understanding how the system works already brings us more than half-way in diagnosis. Have to admit that figuring out exactly what went on here would consume a lot of time - while the diagnosis is already successfully done - but still good fun to try and figure out how things are programmed by reverse reasoning from what the parts do in the car in different situations.

So I am working on an Audi A6. I hook up the power probe to the pump motor it turns on real quick but blows the little breaker switch on the power probe. So I am thinking it is shorting out inside the pump. the codes it throws is for insufficient flow to both bank 1 and bank 2 so I know it's a component affecting both banks. I am also thinking if it is shorting out there should be a fuse that is blown but I have yet to find it but when I do it it should be a good sign of what I think the problem is. Thanks for your videos I am also a subscriber to your paid channel.

Agreed- if the pump is disconnected and this happens when putting voltage directly to the pump, a short internal in the pump is indicated but I also agree I don't see how a fuse wouldn't blow. Therefore, I would test the power probe on another higher amperage device- maybe an AIR pump or something just to be sure the power probe is not faulty.

Can you explain in simple terms what this means?.......P0410 MERCEDES-BENZ Description An air pump is used on the vehicle to lower tail pipe emissions on start-up. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) grounds the Air pump relay control circuit which energizes the Air pump. The PCM also grounds the Air combination valve vacuum control solenoid circuit, which energizes the Air vacuum control solenoid. Vacuum is then applied to both Air combination valve diaphragms which opens the shut off valves. The PCM enables both circuits simultaneously when Air system operations id desired. When the AIR system is active, then Air pump forces fresh air into the exhaust stream in order to accelerate catalyst operation. The AIR combination valves replace the conventional check valves. When the AIR system is inactive the shut off valves prevent air flow in either direction. GOD bless and thanks again.

Neg.putting the meter in Hertz mode and the motor a temp. We now ran the RPM up and down several times to find out that the HZ signal would not rise or decrease smoothly indicates that the MAF sensor is bad.the meter had a graft also that moved up and down that didn't look good.this is why I bought a new one witch it seamed to help but not.i took it for a run starting at 45rpm and punched it up to 65 with no trouble but when I put it at 55 and punched it it would pop and jerk at 60 and up.as for the plugs l was going to put new ones in any way then to check for good spark which I have a spark gap gage that can check for electronic ignition spark gap all 8 look good

wondering ive seen the video and since my truck missed emissions due to incomplete secondary air injection drove it for over 500 miles for ovee a month and still no complete status what could be wrong? change the pump the check valves and the solenoid..... i never had a check engine light so no codes but its still incomplete -__-
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 8 лет назад
So what is the cause of the emission failure? I'd start there. If its not a code then how is the fuel trim responding with command for air injection?
@jramirez2676
@jramirez2676 8 лет назад
+Schrodingers Box the reason it failed was because when the odb2 is connected that system is incomplete in the cycle
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 8 лет назад
jramirez2676 Ohhhh I missed that. Yeah in that case you will need to drive 2 drive cycles sustained at 55mph or so for at least a couple minutes and it should complete the system check.

jramirez2676 Oops sorry that was meant for another person with an EGR problem. On an AIR it will only apply during engine warmup. As shown in the video I would start by seeing if there is command for AIR with cold startup. if there is, then you have an interesting problem- the PCM may not be commanding the self test for whatever reason. If however there is no command for AIR upon startup, I would correct that problem up to including testing pinouts at the PCM if necessary to verify command to the system is delivered. AIR solenoid and pump would be good ones to validate at the PCM if you dont see the commands at the component connectors. If signal is present at the PCM but not the connectors at the components then you obviously found your problem, though not sure why you would have a readiness fail. Its also possble perhaps you're losing battery power causing a P1000 but then you'd gave multiple readiness failures, not just AIR

95% of the cases is not the technician fault. he maybe diagnose the car correct but the "sales department" will lie and try to make the customer to replace many parts as possible. In Europe works like this at dealers. I was personally asked by shop owner to miss-diagnose many things , pulling out codes by removing electrical plugs (and print DTC data for costumer) , replacing whole EGR system (valve , cooler, tubes , etc) for a 0.5 euro gasket leaking ... sometimes just the labels are swapped but parts no .... sometimes parts are taken an replaced (stolen) even from even brand new cars in the showroom too... ... it`s an entire mafia behind spare parts from manipulated varranty, they need to get rid off (abusive sell)..... a dealer is stealing from the brand he represents by manipulated reports, warrany, etc and also from the customer. in most cases , the personal in the shop is just working for thieves .....

I have a car with that code (amateur here) my pump is noisy at the start, and most importantly my engine is noisy (top of engine, rattle at most RPMS below 2000, probably lifters or so called tappets) its a 2.2 petrol peugeot 407 2005, had black Engine oil when i bought it used, so i used the Oil Flush before change (and left it for a while sorrowfully i guess that's why) and changed to 10w40 semi-synthetic Nulon (sydney australia) the engine have 164k Kms on it so not that much, after oil change, noise was there.... Engine repair by STP silenced the noise buy only for a while. Any clues? the P0410 is now gone, i guess it was a loosely cap hose near radiator top that dropped the vacuum ... but now after cleaning air intake, got P0075 Air intake solenoid fault..... Air intake valve is operational even when Key is on "accessories" mode.... any insight? Have to mention too that the car is quite responsive after Spark plugs replacement and intake clean etc... but still the rattle.

Amazing video. I am going to check my solenoid soon. I cannot get my secondary air monitor to set. My tahoe had major misfires and i fixed it with new plugs, wires, and all 4 oxygen sensors. My scan tool can turn on the air pump but wont show me O2 data at the same time. I will have to open the diverter with a vacuum pump, hot wire the air pump and monitor the O2 reaction. I fear my O2s are cheap Chinese junk and respond slow. They dont react at all in open loop. That or the aftermarket cats on it are plugged. Even in closed loop they dont switch high low in a nice wave. It kinda skips a bit. I have no DTC codes or check engine lights but multiple codes for air and O2 voltage in the tests ran parameters. All my readiness monitors are set except air. Thoughts?
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 2 года назад
one thought - it could be a communication issue with your scantool and in actuality the monitor may be set but your tool just can’t see it.

@@SchrodingersBox I replaced air pump solenoid and both check valves. I think i have an issue with my o2 sensors. While in closed loop i opened the diverter valve with a vacuum pump and applied 12v to the air pump. It turned on, the o2s dropped to 40mv then 0 for a split second then shot back up to switching like normal. The truck has aftermarket cats, but ran absolutely horrible with misfires and i fear the cats got plugged up. It has absolutely zero DTC codes and will set all monitors but air during drive cycles. Looks like there are a lot of permanent codes for the o2 heater circuit. During closed loop when the air pump runs on a cold start, the o2s do nothing and then slowly react just before the pump turns off. Maybe its my scan tool. Its a Bluetooth dongle that i use with my iphone.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 2 года назад
that sounds right to me. the fuel trim clearly adapted to the lean from the AIR and returned the O2’s to stoic. what’s the problem you think you have with the O2’s? there is no way that could happen if they were not reporting correctly.
@justingiese6544
@justingiese6544 2 года назад
@@SchrodingersBox I ran the tahoe today from a cold start. I had my scan tool set to show AIR pump relay and O2s for upstream. The AIR pump only ran for a few seconds and shut off. I definitely think my cats are not holding oxygen. I drove on the freeway until it reached operating temp anf pulled into a gas station. Bank 2 sensor 2 was low voltage and switching from .08-.40mv while bank 1 sensor 2 was static in the mid .60s short term fuel trim for bank 1 is 0 and bank 2 is +2.5 or greater Additionally, my tahoe had a plugged heater core, back flush fixed that issue. It seems very slow to get up to temp and will absolutely never go over 195 degrees. I have been skeptical of a stuck thermostat. I thought i read someplace the PCM will test the AIR injection at 200 degrees. Shall i swap rear O2s? Buy new cats? I need this thing to pass California smog! Need all monitors set.

I have a p0410 code. my mechanic first suggested the pump relay. that took the check engine light off for a bit but still the code stayed. I took it back and now he is saying it's the check valves? would that have anything to do withe the p0410 code? it's also a 2001 chevy silverado

I do it by simply jumping the load side of the relay and confirming a positive effect on the short term fuel trim response. I just like to keep it basic.

thanks for the quick reply. im having issues with a p0300 but i have replace the manifold gasket already and still same issue. i try smogging it today in with our beautiful Cakifirnia regulations and it wont pass due to secondary air system. my p0300 comes and goes only at high fwy speed and it will reset it self.

yes, i did the smoke test like you did and it leaked in a few places, replaced the gaskets but still get that p0300.

No you have to do a fuel trim analysis- You can not tell otherwise that the leaking intake was the cause of the misfires.

A co-worker of mine once had a Nissan Maxima. The car was driven through a puddle once. The electrical system would cut out randomly ever since. This means no electricity to anything in the car and the car dies. The car was taken to the dealer several times for repair. Each time, it costed him around $1500. How would you approach this intermittent problem? BTW, he finally had to sell the car because it was dangerous to drive this car. I told him that I wouldn't pay the dealer after the first attempt. The Dealership was paid to fix a problem, not randomly replacing parts at inflated prices.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 9 лет назад
If everything dies chances are there is a bad ground from the battery. I would start by disassembling and cleaning the battery grounds.

My bet is the mechanic diagnosed the solenoid was bad but there was more money to be made by saying the motor needed replacement. Replace the solenoid and the car is fixed and say you replaced the motor and pocket the money.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 8 лет назад
+Ryan Little Actually my bet is he didn't diagnose squat. I have seen as common practice that some shops just replace everything in the system based just one code so as to save the expense of Dx time. I recently saw a Subaru with a similar situation- over a $1200 quote for AIR repair including motor and solenoids and hoses, but the motor ran fine when I tested it.

Owner of Tahoe gets diagnostic review from ASE certified tech saying it needs a new airpump. Tech offers to do job for 700... Owner decided to... hmmm... replace plugs and wires. Tahoe runs like new. Case closed. :P
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 6 лет назад
In that case I would say the owner is ignorant. An AIR pump would NOT cause any drivability issues so the plugs and wires would not have fixed the problem.

@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 6 лет назад
Well what I mean by that is the THEORY OF APPLICATION is simple, in concept. The idea of identifying all variables, systematically eliminating them through controlled experimentation, and then identifying the independent variable which can demonstrate etiology is a simple concept. At least, I think it is. But you're right- the understanding of the various mechanical and electrical systems that would allow you to do the testing and execute this system- that is where knowledge, study, and experience comes it. For example identifying a no start is caused by missing spark should be simple. Identifying that it is from a faulty coil because inputting a signal into the coil manually fails to initiate spark despite verified ground and reference.... that is not so simple. You need to understand the design of the system and know the techniques to do that testing. My paid channel focuses more on designs and techniques.
