Paint Chip Touch-up -- /DRIVE CLEAN

Visit www.ammonyc.com and download your free PDF guide on "How to Touch-Up Your Paint".
Every time you head out for a drive, there is a risk that road or track debris will chip your paint. Should this affect the frequency and intensity with which you drive? We don't think so. This week on DRIVE CLEAN, we teach you the basic techniques for paint chip repair. While the chips are esthetically painful, what's even more painful is the rust that will form from leaving them uncovered. With patience and proper application the results of your correction can be surprising. Most importantly, the substrate is once again protected from oxidization.

Larry, I'm a weekend warrior, detailing my own rides and watching your videos for several years. Your content, clear/concise explanation and video production quality is superb -- I realize this video is several years old and you've made many more insightful, quality videos since; I rarely post on any RU-vid channel, but I just wanted to extend some appreciation and gratitude for 'You Being You' -- THX

This went very well with my perfectionist tendencies! Of course it took me two days for 2 tiny chips and after all that I came back to watch this video again to make sure I did most of it the correct way and of course it came out excellent saved me $700.00 bucks Thanks man! I’ve also purchased other things like a polisher and I’ve made it a point to make it a hobby of mine who knows one day I’ll just decide to do this as a side job & make some money out of my hobby! While saving people money!

He fails to mention that if using metallic paint you SHOULD NOT mix base and clear coat prior to application; it dilutes the metallic shimmer in the base coat making the color darker and ultimately not matching well at all. Learned this the hard way myself touching up chips using this method. Has to sand original attempt out and start over. Big PITA. So, don't mix metallic and clear.

Matthew Taft thanks Matt. I should have followed you! Too late now. I have Basalt Black metallic on my Porsche and mixing clear did not match at all.

It was noticeably different with chips the size of a pen tip.

Matthew Taft So just do it in two steps instead? (Base, then clear?)

Yes. TWO STEPS, sand down, and buff out. You can use Langka blob remover instead of sanding.

The camera work in this short little video is amazing. Absolutely superb! The credits at the end shows it too with the direction of the camera man asking you to bite the tip off, but then pause to hold it up so they have time to focus on it. Later how they edited and cut that into the tutorial video is great.

I honestly love this show to death. It is the single greatest source of expertise, dedication, understandability and presentation I have ever encountered regarding this subject, all in one place. I am excited every time I see a new episode in my news feed and thankful every time I finish it. It's the kind of programming I actually sit down and get prepared to watch, because there is no other show quite like it. Amazing work by everyone involved and I look forward to future episodes to come.

I have 2 small chips to deal with. One is not circular but quite deep. I followed your instructions and used an artists brush to dab in the paint and clear coat. It was very difficult not to get paint on other areas. However, I followed your advice about the wax. Just went to have a look and the paint around the chip came off really easily because of the wax. I can with confidence keep building up the paint and not worry about the surrounding area if I keep following this advice. Thanks.
@frogmanvc
@frogmanvc 9 лет назад
Video is correct up to the 4:40 minute mark. Skip rest of video. Avoid parts store paint pen. Never mix clear and paint together. Before applying Carnuba wax. Check for bare metal..Use K tool sanding pen , degrease and apply thin layer of primer inside wound with tooth pic(dab) or with pointy paint brush (no stroking). Let primer dry completely. Now apply wax as shown and degrease / de wax wound as shown in video. Apply paint, with tooth pic (dab) or pointy paint brush dab or one way stroke for scratch. Do not stroke back and forth with brush. The paint is used to color in the wound. Do not fill in chip or scratch with paint. If you need to apply more paint, allow first application of paint to dry completely. Follow with 2nd coat. If 3rd coat needed, again applied paint must be completely dry. When paint is completely dry. Apply clear in the same manner as the paint. Now YOU ARE trying to fill in the remainder of chip or scratch. To do so, you must allow clear to dry completely before adding clear again...Every time you want to add more clear, it has to be completely dry...When complete, you will have a bit of a hump that you will need to level out....When thoroughly dry, wet sand with 1500 paper to level out the painted surface with the surrounding surface. Finish with 2000 grit wet dry paper...Use clean water for soaking papers and as a lubricant....When paint is level......Hand polish with Meguiars M105 Ultra-Cut Compound and CCS Red Wax/Sealant Applicator Pad. Yes, you can polish out by hand 2000 grit scratches.

@Krutch11
@Krutch11 6 лет назад
If you want to use genuine VW touch-up paint you are forced to buy a pen. In this scenario, use the pen on a de-greased plastic cap to expel some paint and use the paint from the cap with a toothpick to apply to the scratch. The above comment about mixing base and clear coats is SUPER important; can't believe it wasn't mentioned in the video.
@michiganfishing2011
@michiganfishing2011 6 лет назад
frogmanvc I have some questions about clearcoat, from when I was in school I remember that clear coat requires activator, would I have to mix clear and activator right before using? Or does the clear not require activator when used in situations this small?

I've touched up a lot of chips on my Civic over the weekend, many had surface rust. I used a sanding pen and some rustoleum rust reform to take of that and then added several layers of touch up from honda to all of them. It looks pretty good, hardly noticeable unless you look at it for a while up close or know they're there. Oh and I did everything with a #2 painters brush and a fairy steady hand. Didn't do any wet sanding or anything, it looks alright now and I've never done that before.
