Rock Chip Touch-up Tool: Museum Porsche 911

The 1965 Porsche 911 in this video was shipped from Sweden to the USA for it to be detailed and then donated to the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan. I cover 2 quick tips in this episode: How to manage residue on single-stage soft paint, and how to Touch-up many rock chip precisely with the Loew Cornell Fine Paint Pen (size #1). This technique takes a bit longer than modern "wipe-on wipe-off" methods, but I do think the finished product looks better. Hope this helps! -L

I found the easiest way to clean them out after you swish it around in alcohol is fill the barrel (where are you putting the paint) with alcohol, then take the protective tip cover (red rubber pen head protector) that protects the pen tip and slip it on where you fill the barrel, and just squeeze that little red rubber protector (like a turkey baster) and it actually shoots air down in through the barrel and forces the alcohol through the tip. Repeat that process until the alcohol comes out clear. And then after I do that to where it runs clear then I'll take the cleaning tip and finish cleaning it out. I've done it your way before and it didn't work very good. In fact until I discovered the way I do it I had ruined a couple of Pens cleaning it your way. Also if you're having a hard time getting the pen to prime, using that little red rubber pen head protector in the same way helps prime the pen.. I hope this trick helps you and your viewers

I was wondering if anyone figured out the same and sure enough. haha :D I will add though acetone works better for cleaning it out. In the end I found taking a paper towel twisted up fine and spinning it in the cup get the majority of paint out, then just swishing it in acetone remove the rest kinda don't even need the pipe cleaner or red cap pump action. I bet the type of paint might play a big role in how easy it is to clean.

You offer some ingenious insights, using what's right there on hand and it makes perfect sense. It seems having a small eye dropper might work better than dripping those drops off of that tiny brush to fill the reservoir, or even a syringe. I saw a preview recommendation here on YT of a detailer that actually uses a syringe for filling small defects like this. I'll have to find and watch that one as well.

Hi there Kills ‘ ... I took a course in why people do business with you. The fact that you are interested in improvement and follow through with upgrades does several things. It’s keeps you refining your art and helps keep you from getting board. It’s also allows you to speak confidently to people considering your service you mention “We or I, stay on top of the best technologies to keep your vehicle a sweet ride”... You say this twice, once at the beginning of the assessment process, and right after identifying the costs. People need a sudden REASON to believe its in good hands. If you say here is the price and leave it with dead air, they may just go somewhere else for pricing and you wasted your time. Then say. “Have I answered all your concerns”? When they reply yes, then say “I do have an opening Thursday if that happens to suit you”... This is super critical to follow this process because it’s been highly effective. Lots of happy “Clients”... I say, Clients as you are there for the life of the human relationship. It changes your attitude. I can’t speak for your area of prospects, yet here, a hundred bucks more than joe-blow is not a game changer here. If you practice these lines, it comes natural. In perspective they came to you for a solution, you explained what you are doing, you identified costs, you answered their concerns and the only question left is the offering of a date. The other thing is having a line item for Special Materials. This is where you get your extra costs back and is a talking point you bring up to identify the quality of your work. I and others reading this would be interested in your feedback if you elect to try this.

At least you have the options, in my country i can only find a couple of Velcro sandpaper discs and a wooly disc, that's it, no pads, it's even hard to find a Velcro disc to begin with, that's why sites like AliExpress are getting big here, there's not much variety, and importing things off Amazon US gets pricy.

Larry, I am a rheumatologist and suggest that you use a 1 or 3 cc syringe attached to a 22-25 gauge needle(you will have to experiment) to aspirate from the paint container & then inject into Lowe-Cornell reservoir. Then you inject into the target paint-free base. My question is if you are dealing with a larger erosion do you spread the paint with a finger? How do smooth things out? Great tip!

Thank you so much for your demo. I used the Loew-Cornell tool technique on my 2004 Mercedes-Benz C240. I decorate Ukranian Easter eggs so I'm used to using a tool like this. It did a great job of sealing the dings. It's sufficient for my purposes. This worked beautifully!

For those of you who will ask....There are "quicker" ways to touch up many many rock chips at once. (Lots of kits that work well) IMO the tool and technique I demo in this video is much more precise and OVERALL has a better look. However, it is NOT faster. No one method is perfect and it's not the only way to touch up paint. But in this case, on this car, and with the time I had to complete the job...this fine paint pen worked as I hoped.

I bought a Dupli-Color "All-in-one" kit for my Black NC Miata that works great. It has a small metal brush for cleaning any rust out of the hole, a large fingernail style brush and a fine tip (like this tip) that contains the paint behind it for filling in chip marks. Then on the other end there's clear coat to finish.

Thinning the paint helps also. After a few sessions I found it easier to use a eye dropper and put a few drops of paint on a coffee can lid and just dip the pen in and use it that way. Works almost the same without the “flow” issues and very simple cleanup.
@bendalrymple9299
@bendalrymple9299 7 лет назад
There are several ways to do touch up like this. The pen works well but I find it tends to clog during the process because touch up paint dries pretty fast. This is something I do at dealerships everyday along with paint correction and all that. I lean towards a small squeegee and small drops of paint. Lightly drag the paint over the chips. Then use a sanding sponge with a soft paper towel around it and a remover to get the excess paint off. This leaves the paint in the chip only and it cuts the time in half. Great job with the pen Larry!

This was fascinating--both regarding that special car and its destination, and regarding the Loew-Cornell pen. I've been battling tiny stone chips on Porsches for years, and even tried some of the art pens (the kind that dispense ink through needle-like nibs). The pen you used looks perfect. I guess the world's richest man (as of today) will get a bit richer when I order a few of those pens from Amazon! By the way, that's a pretty cool shop you were working in.
