I was surprised that you taped off the knob and deadbolt. I've always found it's better to remove them, both to save time (no taping them off) and to have paint completely under the knob and deadbolts so that if they ever get lose a bit and move around (and perhaps even get tightened again later in not exactly the same place), the paint under them will all look good.

You are absolutely correct it is possible to spray doors in place, and I have done that, but in my opinion, people who aren't accustomed to advanced spraying techniques will get better results by removing them and laying them flat as I do in the video. The primary reason I suggest people do it this way is to prevent runs. (Garage doors, of course, have to be sprayed in place.) Thanks for writing!

Ha ha, you are absolutely correct that it's an old drill, but I was glad to have it around that day because the cordless was not charged when I needed it. Nice eye though!

Hi, I respect your work and your videos but I gotta say I just painted some exterior doors on a project, and the garage door. Happens to be the same color you were painting. I sprayed them all in place, with some backmasking to the interior enamel we painted. I handwashed the garage door and 4 doors, rinsed and wiped, let dry, masked all including glass, removed hardware, set up and sprayed 2 coats (full dry between) with 410 tip, unmask and assemble hardware in a 7.5 hour day.

Better way to remove the door is to remove the 3 hinge pins instead of all the little screws. It's also easier to put the door back on when you're done.

I love your videos and all the tips on the little steps that make a big difference. However, in this video it would be significantly faster to remove the door knob and deadbolt rather than taping them off and hoping you don't see a small thin ring of the old color around them. It's only 2 screws ea. and it's dummy proof putting them back on, as it only fits back one way.

Hey John, Really have enjoyed watching your video, informative and entertaining. A question regarding spray tip size when you are spraying doors and exterior.. Do you use the same tip size or do you have change sizes with each specif use. Thanks, Loren

Hi--A 515 tip is a good all-around size for DIY painters--that size will spray enough paint to do the siding quickly but also provide a fine-enough finish for any entry doors. In the video I'm using a 515 spray tip, which is the same size I used on the side of the house. If you need to cover a lot of ground spraying an exterior, a 517 tip will provide you with some extra volume (a lot of professionals will use a 517 tip). All that said, if you are especially concerned about getting a finer finish on the doors, you might consider 313 or 311 tip specifically for spraying doors. Talk to the experts at your local paint store and get their opinion too. Thanks.

Couple days to dry? Lol doesn't sound right we spray all interior doors in one day

Pros know how to do that, but for DIY painters I think it's best to lay the door flat and let it dry a couple days between coats so that you don't mess up the fresh paint when you flip the door over to paint the other side. This prevents the possibility of runs, which are a problem for people who aren't accustomed to using a paint sprayer. Thanks.

+howtopaintahouse what about adding heat to speed up dry time . Hard to pull a day off to spray on job cause I don't have days to have the door off
