And then in 1944 some creative guy from Luftwaffe: "Dudes I have this briliant idea. What about if we paint a spiral on all of our fighter's propellers, it would make this cool spinning effect and help us distinguish friend from foe easily ...." and plastic kit modelers seventy years later: "Oh sh*t". 😀

Hank, you definitely have the most unique creativity on using a wide variety of " inter- layer" materials to make a model look so realistic. I've heard of the hair spray technique but have never seen it before. I'm just starting back up and practicing ,so your videos are good timing. Ironically, I used the Elmers glue to attach cockpit canopies because it wouldn't fog and dried clear, of course they didn't have all these glues on the market back then, it was just Testors and Green putty :-) You're expertise really helps out an old newbie like me getting back into the hobby..

Actually especially with aircraft since they had the bare metal, US had their zinc chromate and then paint, you can use the multi layer chipping technique over the entire plane where applicable. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Hank. Nice technique! I've got questions about Vallejo primer. I want to try the black primer as I have had trouble with the last two bottles of Stynylrez primers. Do you have any issues with taping/masking over Vallejo primer and paint lifting? I have clicked on your Amazon link for Vallejo primer and it takes me to their gloss black primer. Do you have a link for the flat primer? Just want to support a fellow modeler!! Thanks! Drew

When I got home from work yesterday I primed the parts for the spinner for my Trumpeter Bf109F-4 and after cleaning out the airbrush I went to my computer and went to RU-vid to see what was going on. Guess what video was one of the first ones I saw? Yup, this one.... I had however used Alclad II Grey Primer and Micro Filler, but who cares. Hank, this was an amazing tutorial with incredible results. I must, however, ask a couple of questions if you don't mind: 1) You must have shot a dozen different products from your airbrush. Did you clean your airbrush each time you changed colors, varnish, hairspray, etc or did you simply just keep changing the products as they remained wet in the airbrush cup? 2) Why didn't you just spray the prop blades, hub with the hairspray bottle as if it were a rattle can, did you find it necessary to decant the hairspray into the cup? Thanks alot.
@SpruesNBrews
@SpruesNBrews Год назад
Thank you very much! And of course, questions are always appreciated. 1) very good point - between each product, I rinse the cup of the airbrush out with warm tap water & spray it until no more moisture comes out. Then I'll run a round of thinner through it (again, until dry). That gets the job done pretty well & preps the brush for the next product. 2) I've found that spraying directly from the bottle of hairspray doesn't give me enough control - the spray pattern is way too wide & has a tendency to pool very quickly. Decanting into the brush is a bit of a pain, but definitely worth it. Thanks again! 👍

@dunhill1 -An outstanding miniature painter (and a great guy who is uber generous with his knowledge) has done a couple of excellent tutorials on airbrush cleaning. Even made me want to use mine again for little stuff. His methods and tips are super simple, and keep your airbrush clean with a minimum of hastle, chemicals, etc. His name is Vince Venturella. Look him up on RU-vid then check out numbers 213 and 118 in his "Hobby Cheating" video series. Great stuff!! 😄🍻

That's a lot of steps but dang, the results are outstanding! I am glad to see that kit in 1/35 scale I find it more than a little annoying that 1/32 is such a convention in larger scale aircraft kits and that 1/35 is the convention for the majority of armor/vehicle, figures and diorama accessories. the difference is tiny but can be quite noticeable.

In addition to the primer and top colors used for various nations' props, another important piece of research to include is what material was used in making the prop of a given aircraft. Many Spitfire props, for example, were made of wood, as were props for other WWII aircraft (as well as just about all WWI models). Some Spit props even used more than one kind of wood (ie. birch and mahogany) so if you are chipping down to the wood, be sure to know which wood was where, as those two are very different colors! 😁

Not saying it doesn't look good, but I used to get similar results a lot easier by just dry-brusing -- particularly just silver over the paint to get the chipping effect..
@SpruesNBrews
@SpruesNBrews Год назад
Yeah I've found that chipping with dry-brushing doesn't look as realistic because you're adding paint in additional layers to the model (rather than with this method where you're taking paint away, as it would be in real life). I do love me some dry-brushing though, but I've found that it can stand out if you don't keep it confined to very small areas 👍

Thanks! Before luftwaffe fighters started to adopt the spiral nose pattern that you see on many 109s & 190s, they often painted a slice of the nose cone a different color (either white or black, sometimes other colors). When the prop is spinning, this is supposed to create a dizzying effect that's distracting to enemy pilots or gunners 👍
