Hey everyone I'm in art school and she is an amazing teacher!!! She sounds like my college art professors, and some of them graduated with an art degree from Harvard. She always made us turn our work upside down and told us to look at the shapes in it rather than as one whole shape.

I have more experience with photography than other media so I thought I'd add two more quick photo tips: a tripod and a remote shutter release. Both allow for longer exposure time in natural lighting situations and prevent any camera shake for longer exposure. Just in case this is helpful to anyone. :)

I've purchased these for outlining images for acrylic painting, but today I'm going to use them for a 8x10" drawing of a calla lily I photograph from my garden. I've never used them but this video got me interested to having some fun with them. I love your work :)

For art like this its always best to not be afraid to go dark where needed I'd start between dark and light and go darker as needed plus by the end step away and see how much more dark you need to go

GoreQuill NachoVidal Arches is good, but I find Arches to be over rated, speaking from a transparent watercolourist point of view (I’m excluding watercolour pencils as they work on any water-media paper and they do not work like watercolour does.) A lot of the *the only paper you should use is Arches* hype came from the days when choice was very limited regarding100 percent cotton watercolour paper, and as Arches was the main brand back then for high end paper, all serious professionals used it and recommended it. Nowadays the market has expanded, considerably and there are so many quality 100,percent cotton rag papers out there. I prefer Mulin Du Roy for my watercolour work - cold pressed - it’s more robust and colours are more vibrant on it. For hot press, Fabriano artistico is my favourite. I’m fortunate I have some full imperial sheets left of the old formula, as I hear complaints about Fabriano’s new formula for hot press, but I have never tried it.

Great video Lisa! 😁 I saw the banana with the face as soon as you said it. The flower center above that looks like a praying mantis face holding its hands in front of its mouth... LMBO 😆 The piece came out great. 🤗 OMG, I just realized that is a bee!! I'm so sorry... damn tablet screen. 😂 I started seeing things in other shapes after you mentioned the banana. 🤣

I've never tried the Faber Castell water-soluble pencils myself, but years ago, I found a small blister pack of General's Sketch and Wash and I've used them for sketching ever since - one of the darkest pencils I have ever used (comparable to Derwent Onyx) and definitely the softest, smoothest, most velvety graphite I have ever had. And it blends perfectly too, I highly recommend you give them a go, even just once. :) I completely understand what you mean when you say this medium is fun, certainly a favourite!

You are awesome and fun to watch. I keep recommending you to people with interest in pursuing art and sharing some of the advice I heard from you, for instance how graphite is the most economical way to start out in art, to learn the values. A lady responded with a curious sentiment: that women use a lot of make up and know how to do values and shading on their own faces, so (Do you have a recommendation for those wanting to start and get into colors right away? ^^...) I myself got some sets of faber-castell's 9000 pencils and mitsubishi hi-uni for the fuller range (two of each, hoping they will last me a while), and I was looking at these water-soluble pencils... Chances are, I'll get them, and a Pentel's pocket brush pen for good fun.... I am a bit of a perfectionist, so it will probably take me a while to get to doing things (I hate my drawings and get nit picky...am much more comfortable in the digital realm with more control and precision, and one of the few things I ever made that I still think came out pretty well, was way back in my high school days, during a summer school graphic design class~ I drew my then digital camera. It came out pretty photo-realistic and I let myself experiment and play around with the tools. I am not confident enough to allow myself that luxury with "traditional media"... and am a legendary procrastinator ^^.) Last addition to my stockpile of art supplies were Montana paint markers, because they are refillable and the nibs can be switched out~ It will take me ages to get to actually trying out and doing things with them, so I didn't want to go with alcohol-based markers or disposable ones of any sort. I'm also looking at yupo heavy weight paper (love purple) for said markers and practicing on it, for the same reasons~ Drawing something on it, photographing the result for posterity and reusing the "paper" over and over again. I learned that copics, which everyone seems to be raving about, are not lightfast, so I don't see myself buying any of them any time soon, even if they do have the much nicer and more versatile brush tips. I'll have to further research what can be erased from the yupo paper and how, but I only got the markers in silver, gold, black, white, "iron curtain" (whoever had the bright idea, and what that idea was, I do not know), lilac and dark blue. I love rich saturated colors and see myself personalizing some things with those, perhaps, like a guitar I have my eyes on >.>... I also got a pack of micron markers, but I've been told they dry out in a week, so.. I got myself some fancy Japanese watercolors (Kuretake MC2036V Gansai Tambi 36 Color Set), a set of cheap brushes with some variety, a couple of much nicer (more expensive~ I haven't tried them yet, but do my research before buying most anything) brushes, a travel brush... Unfortunately I ordered a set of 132 prismacolors before I learned about lightfastness and their nonexistent quality control... but oh well. You said they are still nice to use (when they do their job, that is). I got a roll of tracing paper, a roll of glassine, a big 32-ounce jug of Mona Lisa "paint thinner" for blending, an air tight little plastic container for it, two fancy mechanical pencils with una-dia 4b lead, castell's perfection erasers, a workable fixatif, a super spirograph set and a shape set ( xD my childhood), faber castell's perfect pencil, a tun of strathmore sketchbooks... not a good choice there, but I'll have something to learn and improve on, a bunch of other erasers, chamois, stumps, a couple sponges, that paper towel you recommended for the texture.. I get carried away sometimes >.>... When I get into things... And then I procrastinate ^^. Anyway. Just wanted to say that you're very fun to watch and seem to be a very genuine and kind person, and an inspiration to many. Rock on!

Lachri Fine Art Lisa, Art Graf sells water soluble graphite in tins and sticks (I think). I was browsing around my local art store and discovered solid cakes of colored graphite, sort of like tailor’s chalk. They’re a little bulky, the colors are very limited but gorgeous.

Great review and wonderful result! The lighting really can be everything, especially when it comes to less interesting subjects, like you demonstrated with your snowdrops (edit: wrong flower name XD), which are not exactly in the top 10 most beautiful/popular flowers, but the artwork is amazing because you used the right ref. I never really considered using water soluble graphite, but who knows, maybe in the future. Lol, the captions at the end, great you kept that. Btw, it's not just you, I noticed a lot of English speakers are struggling to pronounce "aquarelle" which was very surprising to me (I'm neither English nor French native speaker). Don't know what would be helpful to people, maybe "aqua - rel" and roll that r.

Since recording this video I think I've figured it out. I had google tell me how to say it and practiced a million times before recording a recent colored pencil podcast where we were talking about the Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle lol. I'm not skilled enough to roll the r though haha.

I hope you have time to answer. You are such a talented font of information. Could these water solubles be used as an under painting to block in the shadows for alcohol based markers or for non water soluble colored pencils? That being said would the line work disappear under the markers? Thanx for your time and all that you do! 💜

Lisa great work. I purchased this set a few years ago and did do one drawing. Surprise, yes I actually did a drawing. Question ?? Did you use the complete set - light to dark. You mentione HB 2B 4B 6B and 8B. Did you use them in that order.? You are so correct on using the morning and evening lighting to get a more exciting 'lighting effect' in your photos. I have pulled my old 35mm camera out of retirement and try to use those times to get more exciting lighting effects. Great video, Lisa.
