Double decker night trunking but instead of parcels this time its with a pallet network. This has to be the most complicated hub out of any of the night trunking companies I've worked for.

Great vid squire... this little series, including the 'Rigid Multi-drop' pts1-3, is an excellent source to show any new/inexperienced drivers what the job actually entails. Personally, I'll be keeping them bm'ed for that exact purpose and would recommend anyone else to do the same if ever they get asked the question, 'What's multi-drop like?'.

I work for a pallet network at the main central hub. This place looks very chaotic and busy. Great video

hey - just a suggestion for future video possibility (or to just include with various loads you do) - I am due to sit my C+E test in 3 days, but none of the training seems to tell you how to actually secure a load properly, securely close the curtains on a curtainsider etc - As part of the reversing test, (the test is now split into two parts) I had to demonstrate that I could show the ratchets are tight enough on the curtain - and when I asked during my training how do you adjust them and how tight should they be, I was just looked at like I am stupid!! May seem really obvious and routine for people who do this all the time, but as a new driver it would be good to have at least an idea as to how this stuff works, rather than turning up a depot, on my first day, and saying - erm actually.....I dont know how to properly close these curtains.....or I dont know how many straps I should use on this pallet etc, or where do I secure these straps to the trailer floor etc!
@DTWTheWanderingMuzungu
@DTWTheWanderingMuzungu 2 года назад
Yeah the training is just about the driving and doesn't look at loads or securing. Even CPC only touches on a couple of ways to secure loads but you just do it on a practice rig rather than and actual load on a trailer. I suspect its because there are so many trailer types, loads and ways to secure them plus the variation between manufactures it would all be too overwhelming. If the company you start working for does their job properly they should train you up to load and secure. Most loads (75 -90%) are either strapped or barred, that'll cover you for most eventualities.

Great video. 2 questions.... When in the queue for 4 hours do you put tacho on POA or other work? Also when securing load do you just use internal straps and curtains or do you rachet strap every pallet over 400kgs?
@DTWTheWanderingMuzungu
@DTWTheWanderingMuzungu 3 года назад
I put the tacho on break feet up and go to sleep or watch videos on the phone. Everyone just uses the internal straps on the double deckers.

Depends on the person. Once I'm on the clock I'm awake the whole time so never slept.

On average, how many drops can be achieved with 26t doing Multi drop pallets.

Would you recommend going with an agency or trying to get a permanent position? My dads a c1 driver for Royal Mail but that’s all dead mans shoes, I’m doing my training with a company called sp that’s owned by Eddie stobart and they are also an agency and have told me they can get me temp contracts but it’s gonna be an extra 1900 quid to do my c1 with them but my dad can get me into tramping bio fuel but I’d be tied down for 2 years because they would put me through my c1, I’d love to trunk but I’m not too sure about being tied down to tramping so I’m torn between the 2 options, sorry for the rambling but this is a big career change for me so I’m trying to get as much information as I can :)

As far as I understand it, a company can not tie you down like that anymore - unless, perhaps, they 'make' you sign a very specifically worded and detailed contract before you start employment and commence the training. It's kinda the reason why fewer and fewer HGV companies put people through the different classes of license nowadays, as they could just walk the week after.

It really depends what your after flexibility (agency) or job security (perm job). Going straight into tramping could be a shock to the system if your not prepared for it, even after a few years I still wasn't prepared for it but then again everyones different. I started off in a perm position because its all I could get. It was good as it was always the same so the learning curve wasn't too extreme but it became stale. I changed to agency to gain more varied experience and give me the flexibility to do other stuff like travel and coaches but I'm thinking of settling down into a permanent job again at some point in the future. For you it looks like the choice is save money for the same thing or pay extra for variety. As for recommending one thing over another for me its not that black and white its largely dependant on your situation and future plans.

I would like the security of a permanent position and I don't really mind paying the extra for doing the c1 myself it's just I was told that I would find it extremely hard to get a permanent contract with less than 2 years exp on c1, tramping would be an extreme shock to my system but it was the only permanent job I could find that I could join with no exp in my area, the agency's are desperate for drivers but I'm scared I'll get ripped off like factory agency workers and I need a stable income I'm scared it will be like mcvities and I will only get called in 2 times a week or is that not how lorry agencies work? I'm sorry to spam your channel with all these questions I really do enjoy your videos and watching you made me decide I wanted to change my career but I'm just trying to find out everything I can before i make the switch
@DTWTheWanderingMuzungu

Ahh yes that two year phrase. I just accepted the fact that I would just have to take any job until that two year phase was over then I could start moving towards where I want to be. The agencies are technically zero hour contracts so work is not guaranteed and there can be dead zones throughout the year particularly jan/feb. Although this year for me it was full throttle all the way and I actually had to take days off because I was being run into the ground. As the older guys retire the work seems to be going up and up for agencies of course there are some dodgy ones out there but if you can research them to find out what they're like that might help. if you go down the tramping route it would be a good idea to research that as well, I know blackcountrytrucker did a fairly good video on what to bring with you as a tramper.
