Marcin, those who are saying this sticky movement is mostly from a diagonal path I believe are wrong. I believe your first test and the tests I did show that any variation in speed or change in direction causes this unwanted behavior.

Well, I've not done a formal test of the image stabilization on my G85 (same as G80) but I have to say the odds are good that this is something that can be addressed with a firmware update. From what I see it looks like the IBIS system get's out of sync with the cameras movement sensor which I guess is some form of 6-axis IMU. Anyway, it appears that when panning the IBIS tries to keep things steady, thinking the early part of a pan is actually jitter and then when it realizes the movement is a pan it has to jump to catch up.

Thank you so much for this warning. I really hope Panasonic does something about this and that it is only a firmware problem and not hardware. If it doesn't get fixed, people are going to vote with their pocketbooks. Once again, thank you so much for noticing and sharing this problem. Time so subscribe to your channel. Thumbs up!

Actually, you can't just disable OIS while keeping IBIS activated. Switching OIS off using the external switch disable both stabilization systems. The humming noise you hear is actually the camera maintaining the sensor still, the noise is the same whether IBIS is on or off.

I know you weren't talking about noise. I just wanted to mention it since people think that humming noise = IBIS, which is wrong.
@sooovann8908
@sooovann8908 7 лет назад
That's totally correct. The system keeps the sensor in place so that it doesn't move around when your camera is turned on. The same system is used to move the sensor and stabilize your shots. When the camera is turned off, the sensor is not kept in place anymore so you can hear the sensor moving around when shaking the camera. Just to clarify things because many people seem to interprete this humming noise for constant IBIS which is not necessarily the case.

Panasonic issued a statement addressing the problem today on their Instagram page. They are working on a fix. instagram.com/lumixusa

So have you decided to send your G80 back ? Will you keep it even though its IBIS is subpar compared to the GX80 ?

I think the G80 IBIS is better than GX80. For the same still shot, the G80 seems to hold things far steadier with less micro-jitter. In addition, the G80 seems more aggressive which can show in video mode pan grabbing. I noticed it on slow pan at 100mm. I did not noticed any grabbing using horizontal and vertical pans on G80 with 12-35. Each shot moved to my next target smoothly. The humming noise is louder on the GX85 but both too quiet to hear on the audio tracks. Just want to thank Marcin for these well put together videos. It's a bunch of work and done well.

orange42 G80 is better for shooting stills but not so much for video. I think many photographers should be happy with this camera :)

Yeah I'd say Panasonic needs to tweak it for video mode, yup. And, oops, I just did notice a nasty grab when using the 12-35.

Any type of panning movement in vid mode will get you the same results....jerky quality while the stabilization freezes and then races to catch up. I have not used the GX80, but I'm sure the difference is pronounced. I want to love my G85, but if there is no fix for this video issue, I'm going to have to send it back. Why can't Panasonic just communicate with us and let us know that they at least are recognizing our legitimate complaints?? If they would just let us know that a fix is on the way for the sensor firmware to bring it up to the level of the GX85 I would keep this camera and wait it out. I love the photo quality, but can't live with the jittery video.

OK, Did you see this test? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nDSTnSp3Oko.html There are many other videos that do not show this "something" that you test shows. Could it be something wrong either with your camera setup, ot with your camera copy?

Hope you don't mind if i put this link here Marcin. I can see the same thing on the G85 I tried here, although I did have to look for it a bit. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZC103uZRLpE.html

Hey Marcin, did you ever noticed same kind of IBIS behaviour in GX80/85 before the first firmware update?? In this review (approx 03:10) you can see a very similar bad effect... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hhxaQkR8vbk.html

Marcin Rucinski What exactly did the update on GX80 improve that it felt even a little bit better? It offered even smoother stabilisation or sth else improved? And what about any next updates? Did any other, next update improve even more on GX80 or only the first update did sth noticable? Cheers.
