The Hybrid Shooter I was going to ask you about those filters hehe, they are already on my wishlist. Im planning to use them on the almost complete upcoming tamron holy trinity for Sony e-mount.
I'm sure both are great cameras. However: I just came back from Africa with my G9, which is basically the same size and the lenses are the same. I own both but decided to leave the GH5 at home. I easily could carry the 8-18, 12-35, 35-70 and 100-400 with me AND a water bottle and other stuff - not unimportant if you are in the Namibian bush land on foot. Would I have used the S1 I would have been screwed as I would have had to leave my water at home... :) All kidding aside: For me personally the smaller lenses etc. kill everything else.
I agree with your summary. I also tried the S1H, but manual focusing is hard when the lenses are so big. The GH5 remains the most practical option for most things. If I need low light, I bring out the GH5s and a monopod. I think people have forgotten about monopods. Just get a decent carbon fibre model that packs away nice and small. 😁
It's funny, a monopod was on every job I did for almost eight years. But after I got a G9 with its super IBIS, I hardly ever bring a monopod, and going handheld has opened a new world of camera movement, speed and portability. But I do use a monopod when using extra long lenses or if shooting a lot from a stationary position.
This video has to be one of your best! Not too long or full of boring spec detail. You adequately state the differences between the two cameras, their strengths and weaknesses, etc. The one thing you didn't mention was price. If I was a professional photographer/videographer, I would probably buy BOTH!! One for the high resolution studio work and some high grade portrait/landscape shots on a tripod, and the other (GH5) for video work of all types, from YTube to street shooting. They compliment each other in ways no other setup can do. One HUGE advantage is a similar menu system that will keep memorizing hundreds of different options to a minimum. Great cameras, great lens selections, and together with lens, they cost less than anything serious out of Leica!!
Great video! I have the S1H and have owned the GH5 and GH5s. For multi-camera shooters, i'd say the S1H is an amazingly great camera and the GH5 is a great secondary camera. Their colors are very very similar. The GH5s has a magenta shift to it, but the S1H and GH5 lean on the greenish tint so they're really good together.
@@TheHybridShooter Well, neither do I so I get that could be a tricky thing to acquire. But if you ever do get your hands on one and do your tests, I will be interested in your thoughts/comparisons of that.
Slightly off-topic. Your review Bill of the Pany/Leica 10-25mm lens convinced me of buying it even when just about everyone else was still recommending the Sigma + speed booster. Your content/info was dead on ....as always! Even though 90% of my use of that lens right now is photos, it still is worthwhile and it is extremely close in sharpness with the best mft primes with my testing. Sticking to a native lens for autofocus speed and accuracy as you noted is so valuable in my opinion. You really should have least 250K subs dude.
Lot of biased and untrue reviews on the 10-25. It is an extraordinary lens... optically, in use.. .and a different 2.8 focal length for a change. One of the best "FF 2.8s" money can buy... so even the price is "ok".
@@TheHybridShooter Oh I see, my mistake. I bought the G9 from watching your video one year ago. It fit very well for what I normally do outside like street photography and traveling.
great video! We use a GH5 as well as a G9 and recently added an S1H with 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 lenses to the kit. Agree with your conclusion, both cameras have their distinct and different set of benefits and use cases. The great thing is that the picture profiles of the cameras are fairly similar and easy to match in post.
I'm upgrading from Sony A6300, and with a budget of $4000 (for camera, lens and potentially audio) - I'm looking into GH5 & S1. I shoot documentary solo, and given the track record of firmware upgrade I kinda have high hope for the S1. Which one do you think is more future proof/better investment?
Thanks for the review and comparison. Wondering what's gonna be #Panasonic #Lumix next move for the GH5/GH5S/G9? a trio MFT (new naming and merging GH5+GH5S+G9) like for the new FF cameras? FF 1.- Photo-centric > S1 > 24.2MP 2.- Photo-centric but more MP > S1R > 47.3MP 3.- Video-centric > S1H > 24.2MP vs MFT 1.- Photo-centric > G__ > xx.xMP > A GX with 20MP or more 2.- Photo-centric but more MP > G__ > xx.xMP > A GXR with Sony 41MP MFT sensor? 3.- Video-centric > G__ + G__ > xx.xMP > A GXH + GXHS > 2 cameras, a one like GH5S for low light performance because of the sensor size? What do you think?
You are the man when it comes to tech videos - practical including your own opinion A thought: Comparing identical exposure triangles over different formats doesn't hold any value in terms of real life use. When I shoot FF & I choose f5.6 - I would never shoot MFT at f5.6 if it can go f2.8 - like in your example. So it is 1/2 ISO of FF in real world situations. The GH5 still looks a little worse, but not as severe as it seems at identical ISO values (2 stop advantage S1 to 20MP MFT sensor, but not 4). Here the GH5 seems close to "not good enough" at ISO6400. In reality MFT just doesn't use 5.6 indoors... or after dark. There is no application for the DOF achieved that way.. not in that light; resolution records are also at faster apertures with practically any MFT lens. All the best!
Thank you, although I don't agree with that. It is a bit more complicated. In reality you usually don't use FF cameras for ENG style, deep DoF shots when you are using longer focal lengths. At wider FoV the DoF is usually deep enough even at something like F2.8 on FF. F2.8 is enough for both FF and M43 in that situation, so FF will beat the M43 the same way, just like in most real-world low light situations.
@@TheHybridShooter You block a polite and logical response because it contradicts your point? This could be useful to some... The man with tech video. Not the man in real life. Now I know more about you than anybody should know over the internet. Still thanks for the answer. It made me realize that advantage of FF and so I can use my gear more efficient. Censorship makes this the last time I stop by. Have a good life, my friend
@@over-x-poser6289 I didn't block anything, there are probably some technical issues, or it might be in automatic spam filter. I would obviously delete the whole thread if wanted to censor something and I wouldn't be responding here.
@@TheHybridShooter Hm. Strange. I can still see it, but need to be logged in. Other acc can't see it. No worries then. I asked something about FF2.8 and 10-25.. we would shoot last at 1.7 wouldn't we? In the end it has to be same composition. Only 1.4 wide primes on FF -> MFT has no way to match 1/2 Iso... there is no 0.7 lens
Having the G9, it is still my favorite camera. The S1 is nice for a full frame, but I really like the nature of the camera. I have after trying it out a my local shop, not to switch.
I have used Nikon cameras for many years, however, I've recently been considering one of these. Really appreciate your reviews, and find myself coming back to watch them over and over again. You bring up many points I have wondered about, and by the end, hearing you say that if you had to choose, you'd go with the GH5 really means a lot. In the noise comparisons, I noticed you kept the same settings for both cameras. This means the GH5 has greater DOF at those settings. It would also be nice to see a comparison where the aperture is adjusted to match DOF, and ISO adjusted to compensate. This would hightlight the advantage of M4/3, which is that you get the same DOF at a lower aperture. I suspect this would even out the difference in noise between the 2 formats.
Thank you, full frame is not supposed to match M43 look, so I don't think that it is an advantage of M43. DoF is sufficient in that situation, nothing is out of focus, so I see no reason to compensate for DoF.
@@TheHybridShooter That's fine. What I meant was that if the FF image was shot at f5.6, then the M4/3 image could be shot at f2.8 and get the same look, and then the ISO could drop by 2 stops, giving a cleaner image. This is what I meant by the advantage of M4/3.
Yes, I understand, but as I have explained, I dont think that matching DoF is necessary, because that is not what FF users will do in the real wold usage.
@@TheHybridShooter Maybe not. As a user of FF cameras thinking about switching to M4/3, I know I would use lower f-stops, because it's not the number that's important, it's the look I want to create.
I meant that the other way around. FF uses won't stop down to F8 for interviews to match M43 look at F4. Shallow DoF, achievable with standard lenses, is one of the main characteristics of the FF cameras and therefore I have no problem with side-by-side comparisons without matching DoF.
Hello 👋 Great comparison, found it really helpful. Any reason to grab GH5S +PL10-25 instead of S5 and FF lens? IQ factor, price is not different. + using vintage lenses on FF bodies helps to get maximum from glass (im still not happy with the separation i got on f2.8 with focal reducer).
@@TheHybridShooter i am thinking to invest in FF body. Mainly will shoot on vintage lenses, something like 16-35 or 24-70 for AF and run and gun job. Hope FF will make my image more shallow and wider for +- same money and size.
For me would be the main question, that if i want to buy my first video kit for wedding and event video for 2 videographers, should i get 2 Pana S1 body with Sigma 35mm f1,4 and Sigma 85mm f1,4; or one Pana GH5, one GH5S with Voigtländer 17,5 f0,95 and 42,5 f0,95?
I would definitely avoid those Voigtlanders ther M43 line just isn't very good. I also wouldn't insist on F1.4 FF for video, is is not that useful for video in my experience.
Can you help? I am a small business owner and need to do both excellent portrait quality photos as well as bi-weekly videos and the better the image quality, the better business does. Panasonic GH5s or Sony a7iii? I rely more on good quality, well lit videos than images. I prefer not to spend forever editing but photos are much easier for an amateur to edit than a video. I’m a bit lost! It’s so technical and I haven’t time to take a college course! Any advice you have, I would be so grateful ❤️
do you think i am getting basicly full frame results with a gh5 and sigma 16mm f1.4? like it would basicly be a 32mm f2.8 FF eqv right? which is good i think. and if i were to compare the f1.4 on the gh5 to f2.8 on ff. i dont really understand the ISO differences at that. but would the gh5 or full frame do better with those configurations?
No, definitely not. There is a lot more that makes up the full frame look, especially lower pixel density on FF, less in-camera sharpening, superior detail, DR and so on.
@@TheHybridShooter I mainly want it for recording myself, social media content, RU-vid, need still some good lowlight tho for the gym and walking at night. Nothing where you can pixel peep with all the compressions. So with that being said, still no?
Your question was whether you will get full frame results with GH5 and the answer to that will always be no. I can't tell you whether it will be good enough for you, that depends on your expectations.
@@TheHybridShooter yeah I know what you mean. But like if my friend was making youtube videos such as vlogging, and recording himself in his room for example. And I was too. But he was using f2.8 a7RIV where as me with the gh5 and f1.4. For youtube. Would people watching be able to tell an actual quality difference? Sorry I just kinda rambled on, and it may seem very unorganized. I just never had full frame camera, but my dream is to get a7riv
Hi great video!! I have a question about autofocus. If you following a person with one area focus. Does the one area box needs to be on the persons head or can i just have it on the chest? Beacuse the head is smaller and moore difficult to follow! I have done it on the chest and it seems that the whole person comes in focus. And when i campare. 1 area in chest vs 1 area on head it's not big differnece. On the head seems slightly better. (12mm 2.8) or maybe its the same i dont know... Do you know if it does matter Where on the body you Place your 1 area box?😊
The best option in that case it to use smart tracking feature which will automatically detect the face. That part of AF system works well, so there are no reliability issues.
No, on GH5 and S1 it is not a problem. I don't about the G9. It is still a big problem on Olympus cameras in video, EM-1X does that up to 12mm, unless they fixed it by FW.
hey wiliam. i think many hybridshooters would be happy to see a video about the S pro16 35 f4 in combination with the Lumix s1. that would make us really happy. dearest greetings to slovakia
Great comparison video! I think you should have emphasized the huge selection of lenses available for the GH 5, not only from Panasonic, but also, from Sigma( great primes with auto focus), and from Olympus, especially the Pro lineup. Of course the Olympus Pro lenses are big, pricey and rather heavy, but it's better to have choices. The S1 on the other hand, although a great body still lacks lens choices and price affordability. Good job!
Would it be possible for you to make your video quality lower? It kinda ruins my experience browsing youtube knowing just how pretty it could be hahaha :D
I'm shocked at how slow the Autofocus seemed for the S1, the GH5 seemed a little poky but the S1 felt slower than my Pentax K-1 with a slow lens. I wonder if there's something you can do to help speed up responsiveness or if the lens makes a large difference in speed. By comparison, the Sony seemed spot on and I think Nikon's Z6 is pretty good too.
@@TheHybridShooter thanks for this video. I'm an GH5 user. But I need a stills camera too (360° panoramas (real estate). So I bought a A7R3 with a 16 35 F4. I just tested it. But I don't like the results (noisy, not sharp really, dark and cold colours… Well maybe is a question of habits (compare to lumix), or settings… I was thinking I should have choose a S1 with the high resolution mode. What do you think about your experience ? (sony vs panasonic) In the S1, can we use the high resolution mode with bracketing fonction ? Thank you . Regards
@@arnaudr6541 I have never heard anybody complaint about bad image quality on A7R III. 16-35mm F4 is very average lens, but the problem is probably somewhere else. If you can't get good results with A7R3, getting S1 won't help you. Take a look at the settings, use lower ISO, exposure compensation and so on...
@@TheHybridShooter Thanks for your answer. I'll check again the A7R3. The idea to go with the S1, was have just one camera good for video and stills and sell the GH5 and the A7R3 for a S1… In the S1, can we use the high resolution mode with bracketing fonction ? Have a good day.
If you look for image stabilization for video Panasonic is the only real solution. Even on middle of 2020 the competition is far away. Until you don't move your camera the stabilization is ok also on other brand but if you want a stabilization for video camera mouvement the only usable footage is the Panasonic one.
@@micahmahaffey5919 I've seen some of the high speed footage and it's really soft looking. It takes a huge bitrate drop in high speed, my GH5 120 footage looks better.
I've looked at some recent footage online from the GH5s and it still exhibits that stuttering effect with panning shots. Apparently the S1 and above don't have this problem.
You should check out the 56mm f1.4 from Sigma, it is one of the best lenses for m4/3 and one of the sharpest. I did a review for using it for portrait photography.
@@TheHybridShooter I also use it as my go to for product photography and b roll. It is just a great all around lens over the 42,5 1.2, I hope I didn't give the impression it was just for portraits. It would take your watch shots to another level.
The Hybrid Shooter it has no fstop ring and no focus clutch like the olympus lenses have so its a very basic lense and this looks cheap to me. Not a pro lense in my opinion, its not only about the optical qualitys but about the ease of use. Real pro lenses are more expensive of course but you get what you pay.
Nice review but First off why is everyone complaining about rolling shutter? even the G5 show rolling you were panning slower than the other camera. Mirrorless camera do not have global shutter. It would be one hell of a challenge for all camera company that can adapt both shutter system in the camera. same as the smartphone they do not contain global shutter too. that my 2 cent
As far as I know, nobody is complaining about the rolling shutter on the GH5. If you are asking generally, I guess that people don't like skewed lines that are vertical in reality... on something like EOS R it will ruin you footage. I'm not sure if that is the answer that your were looking for, but I don't really know how to answer that.
then maybe it time to stop demonstrating the rolling shutter effect as we all know it cannot handle it A smooth panning is the goal to great video including using other tools and equipment like gimbal. Which you have done. Cheers
I don't think so, many cameras can handle it and it is still important for shooting fast action. Fast panning is completely valid technique for shooting sports and similar types of footage, so I will definitely keep testing rolling shutter in my reviews.
Perhaps we should remember that for a given depth of field a m43 camera will be operating at two stops numerically smaller f-stop and ISO than a Full Frame camera. It usually turns out that when trying to record the same image - with the same depth of field - the noise and therefore the "low light performance" is not massively different.
It is a bit more complicated than that. In reality you usually don't use FF cameras for ENG style deep DoF shots when you are using longer focal lengths. At wider FoV the DoF is usually deep enough even at something like F2.8 on FF. In reality, the FF performance will be massively different in majority of cases, unless you use very bright lens on M43.
@@TheHybridShooter I'm a professional - I'm an engineer/scientist who designs fancy optical instruments for Physics research purposes. I think that photographers need to know three basic facts when choosing between FF and crop sensor cameras: (i) Bulky lenses can collect more light and render shallower depth of field (the size of the sensor has no effect); (ii) Larger sensors can process more light than smaller sensors and this leads to potentially larger dynamic range; (iii) Smaller sensors have faster read-out speeds which tends to be important in high resolution and/or high frame rate video. I think that defining "low light performance" as measuring the same image - with the same depth of field - is the only sensible starting point for such a discussion. But there are exceptions - astrophotography, for example - where depth of field is unimportant. In that context the "low light performance" is mainly determined by the physical size of your lens (or mirror) and has very little to do with sensor size.
I have explained that multiple times in previous videos, as I have said this video is not dedicated FF vs M43 sensors comparison. According to my experiences, majority of users will get "massively better" results with FF cameras and commonly used lenses in real-world situations. For the purposes of this video, I am OK with saying that the low light performance is *generally* an advantage of full frame, even though it is a relative advantage as I have also said in the video.
The Hybrid Shooter people can judge for themselves, of course. They can compare the video and photo examples you and others have presented for m43 cameras at ISO 1600, for example, with those measured at ISO 6400 on full frame and decide if they can really see a substantial difference in quality.
@@Stephen.Bingham Of course, although I still think that comparing ISO 6400 to ISO 6400 makes much more sense, as I have explained in my first comment.
I am aware of that, but that is the footage that I have and I still much prefer reused footage over talking-head videos. Ideally, I would shoot new footage for every video, but that is currently not possible.
Yeah if the clip of the S1 was reshot with a different background and you wearing a different shirt I would have been able to understand the content better.......FFS your videos are great, engaging, timely, and free. Thank you very much for them.
